‎[PERRY EXPEDITION - JAPANESE DEFENCES].‎

Kurofune torai onkatamezu. Defence Map Against the Arrival of the Black Fleet.‎

‎Japan. Circa1854. Black and white woodblock map with illustrations 32.2 x 41.5cm. Laid down on thick paper. Printed black border line at lower corner and occasionally in other areas along the border not printed otherwise good. This woodblock print map shows the defence layout around Tokyo Bay against the arrival of the American fleet. Names of lords who are responsible for defending particular areas are written with their rankings in terms of wealth sizes. In the centre the American ships are illustrated in detail. There are five sailing ships painted in red and three steam ships. These eight ships entered the bay on 6 February 1854. Thus this map most likely depicts the scene around that time. A caption on the left reads: 'The United States of America founded by Washington 77 years ago sent Matthew Perry with the President's letter in 1853; Perry revisited Edo in 1854.' . unknown‎

‎[PIÈCES ANTI-NAPOLÉONIENNES]‎

‎Recueil politique.‎

Davois I, 134. Sepulveda I, 165 et II, 35.VI. Paris, A. Eymery, Le Normant, 1814, 102 pp. Édition originale. Davois I, 207.VII. He said that 'They always felt dissatisfied with what might have been done. but on that plateau with no 'grub' inside them. they were forced to turn back. 'One wealthy friend was so far interested as to give an Antarctic dinner at a famous restaurant to all the available men who had been in the far South. The table was transformed into a picture of the Antarctic with artificial snow and real ice where large models of the Nimrod and the Aurora were placed at the edge of an ice-barrier thickly peopled by penguins and Marston the Antarctic artist painted special menu cards. It was a gay gathering enlivened towards the close by songs from Harry Lauder; but alas! the rich and kindly host did not pursue his hospitality to the point of providing transportation for his guests to revisit the haunts they longed for' The Life of Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton 1923 pp.191-2.<br /><br />With<br /><br />Souvenir programme. 4to 'Sir Ernest Shackleton to give his Popular Lecture entitled Nearest the South Pole at the Music Hall Chester' signed twice by Shackleton 'E.H. The series of talks accompanied by lantern slides proved hugely popular with audiences. An account of a similar lecture in Edinburgh describes his charismatic style of delivery: "In the centre" he said "you see the South Pole. Now you've seen as much as anybody else has ever seen". Hearty laughter greeted this opening as he knew it would. He had an orator's gift for dramatic effect and his humour was timed to perfection.' ‎[Shackleton Nimrod Expedition]‎

‎Printed Specimen Label on Vellum‎

‎NP: Nimrod Expedition 1907. Small piece of vellum 10 X 7 cm. Printed on one side are six words which were intended to have observations recorded adjacent. Other than a bit of shrinkage to the vellum the item is in nice condition. This interesting expedition registration slip seems to have been intended for oceanographic recording. The six areas for recording are titled as follows: No.; Date; Lat.; Long; Depth; and Temp. The provenance for the slip is from the Goldberg collection as the other items in the catalogue. Other than being recorded in the Goldberg personal catalogue as from the Nimrod Expedition there is nothing else to tie it to the expedition. Still an interesting artifact. 1907 Nimrod Expedition hardcover‎

‎[SILVER HUT EXPEDITION, 1960-61]; [HILLARY, Edmund]:‎

‎MANUSCRIPT EXPEDITION NOTES AND SHERPA ARTWORK FROM EDMUND HILLARY'S 'SILVER HUT' EXPEDITION TO SEARCH FOR THE YETI OR 'ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN'‎

‎Original manuscript and artwork. 1960-1961. 2pp. manuscript text with numerous corrections and additions on a large sketch album leaf 37 x 27cm providing an outline of the expedition with a striking pencil portrait of one of the expedition's Sherpas to the conjugate blank perhaps by the mountaineer himself. WITH: 18 drawings attributed to Sherpa artists by the mountaineer as indicated by his annotations to several of the images comprising a mixture of pen and ink and more decorative coloured watercolour and gouache examples mostly to one side only across 17 sheets. Each measuring between 18 x 27cm and 27 x 37cm. The manuscript and drawings are in very good condition with just a little occasional creasing to the edges of a few drawings and the odd minor mark or nick to the extremities - the images remain bright and vivid. A remarkable group of Sherpa artwork collected by a member of Edmund Hillary's Silver Hut Expedition 1960-61 including a Sherpa depiction of the ascent itself and an imaginative encounter of the mountaineers with a Yeti mother and child alongside manuscript notes by the same member outlining the purpose of the expedition likely penned after the team had left Kathmandu but before their lengthy acclimatisation at altitude had begun.</p><p>Initiated by Edmund Hillary and Griffith Pugh along with John Dienhart of World Books in America the Silver Hut expedition formally known as the Himalayan Scientific and Mountaineering Expedition sought as its mission to winter for the first time at 20000 feet without oxygen and then to attempt the summit of Makalu 27790 feet. It was perhaps best known however for its simultaneous mission to find evidence either proving or disproving the existence of the Yeti or 'Abominable Snowman'.</p><p>The present notes written by a member of the expedition outline the expedition's purpose "to put man on a 27790 foot Himalayan peak in this particular case Makalu south-east of Everest on the disputed Nepal-Chinese Tibet frontier" as well as "to throw light on the Abominably Elusive Snowman". He continues however that "more than one expedition designed solely for that purpose has collected sufficient data to support the legend" and "short of capturing the creature or photographing it our mammoth expedition will add nothing new to what already is known about the greatest remaining mystery of our times". He then goes on to credit the team leader "Everest has been climbed by Sir Edmund Hilary who leads our expedition" and recent ascents "Most of the other major Himalayan peaks have been successfully scaled out of respect for the feelings of the local people among them our Sherpas. I avoid using the term conquered" finally mentioning local esteem for Sherpa Tenzing Norgay "a folk song we have heard sung by strolling minstrels in and about Kathmandu. where our expedition began claims that the Himalayan Gods and Goddesses smiled on Tenzing and helped him achieve his high ideal".</p><p>It is not quite clear which of the mountaineers on the expedition penned the present notes although the author describes himself as "a layman with this largely scientific expedition" who is admiring of the "painstaking research our physiologists are even now preparing to undertake under never-before experienced conditions" potentially pointing to George Lowe. </p><p>The artworks include striking portraits of a Sherpa and a young Nepalese or Tibetan boy as well as a remarkable detailed depiction of the western mountaineers climbing Mount Makulu. This illustrates six roped climbers making their ascent whilst below two other westerners spy on a Yeti and a Yeti child all set above a Himalayan village. The remaining images comprise depictions of: a Tibetan village with two figures and stylised mountains above; four women tilling the land and planting; four sheets depicting Tibetan dancers two pen and ink and two watercolour one of the latter also depicting two western mountaineer onlookers with boots telescope and backpack; a house with two figures a dog and goats; dancers and musicians at a feast; another feasting scene with three figures and stylised flora and fauna to the reverse; ceremonial costumes; a stylised mountain temple scene with a figure on horseback titled "Chumbi enters Lhasa"; another stylised mountain scene with a child and yak in the foreground titled "Chumbi & Yak "When I was little higher than a Yak's head I discovered the truth about mountains""; Dorje Tsempa; an expressive goat; and a sheet of calligraphic text. ‎[Swedish Antarctic Expedition] Nordenskjold, Otto‎

‎Boletin del Instituto Geografico Argentino‎

‎Buenos Aires: Local Del Instituto: Arenales 687 1904. 166 2328 pp. Octavo. Half cloth and paper covered boards binding. Worn on the edges. Numerous rubber stamps having been erased on the margins with repairs on the backs. One page with a large amount of the corner renewed with slight loss. Numerous black and white illustration. 5 folding maps. An index has been cut out from somewhere else and pasted onto the title pages. A good only copy of a rare and fragile item. This volume consists of two issues of the Argentine Geographical Institute journal bound together. The first issue appears to be complete but the second issue just has 3 extracted articles that relate to the Antarctic. The first issue appears to be totally devoted to the Antarctic and many of the articles relate to the recently rescued Swedish Antarctic Expedition. Authors include Skottsberg Nordenskjold Anderson Charcot and Jalour. The second issue includes articles by Scott Harvey and Rudmore Brown. This very scarce Argentine Journal is printed on poor quality paper which probably contributed to its scarcity. The front endpaper is inscribed in Spanish with the following: To His Excellence the President of the delegation of the Republic of Peru at the VIII Pan American Conference at Montevideo in my personal affections and signed perhaps by Francisco Segui who was the editor of the Journal. Not a prime copy but very very scarce. 1904 Local Del Instituto: Arenales 687 hardcover‎

‎[Texas]. [Santa Fe Expedition]‎

‎Secretaria de la Comandancia General del Departamento de Durango. Por Comunicacion oficial Que Acaba de Recibir el Sr. Comandante General de Esta Departamento. "Cuartel General de Operaciones Sobre los Rebeldes Tejanos." caption title and first lines of text‎

Very good plus. Broadsheet approximately 13 x 9 inches. Printed in two columns. Old horizontal fold; small chip at upper left edge. Otherwise only minor edge wear and very light toning. In a custom cloth slipcase and chemise. An extremely rare broadside that provides an account of the initial capture of the Texan Santa Fé Expedition in New Mexico to the citizens of Durango by Manuel Armijo the military commander of the Mexican state. The expedition was an overly optimistic endeavor whose goal was to establish a trade route through Texas to New Mexico and if possible to establish Texas jurisdiction over Santa Fé a right that had been claimed since the revolution. To this end a motley group of 321 traders merchants soldiers and politicians the "Santa Fé Pioneers" were assembled and departed Austin in June 1841. The party struggled through the deserts of west Texas and New Mexico for several months before being captured en masse by provincial Mexican forces at the beginning of October.<br /> <br /> "The Texans had expected to be welcomed by the citizens of New Mexico and certainly had not anticipated armed resistance but Governor Manuel Armijo of New Mexico had learned of the expedition and had detachments out awaiting the arrival of the Texans. Capt. William G. Lewis one of the first of the advance party to reach the settlements turned traitor and persuaded his comrades to lay down their arms on September 17. He was again used by the New Mexicans in securing the surrender of the main force which had crossed the Llano Estacado and was encamped at Laguna Colorada near present Tucumcari New Mexico on October 5. Thus without the firing of a single shot the entire expedition passed into Mexican hands" - Handbook of Texas.<br /> <br /> The account printed here dated September 22 1841 gives an extensive and detailed report from Manuel Armijo on the events surrounding his capture of the first hundred men of the expedition. A much shorter announcement of the capture to the people of Chihuahua by its military commander José María Elias Gonzales dated September 28 and a brief address by an official in Durango celebrating the victory dated October 8 follow the printing of Armijo's report. "This is the earliest printing which has survived of the account by Armijo of his capture of the vanguard of the Texas Santa Fé Expedition" -- Streeter. Streeter knew only of his own copy now at Yale; OCLC concurs and does not add any further institutional copies to this count nor is there any new information in the second edition of Streeter Texas. Very rare and one of the few contemporary Mexican printed documents relating to the Texan Santa Fé Expedition.<br /> Streeter Texas 964.

‎[WASHINGTON TERRITORY -- SKAGIT EXPEDITION]. PIERCE, First Lieut. Henry H.[ubbard; DOWNING, Alfred].‎

‎Report of an expedition to Puget Sound Washington Territory by way of Lake Chelan and Skagit River during the months of August and September 1882 made by. . . under the orders of Brig. Gen. Nelson A. Miles. . . .‎

‎Washington D.C. & Fort Vancouver W.T.: Government Printing Office 1883. 8vo. 25 1 pp. With 1 large folding map sized 11.76 x 55 in. Blue-printed softcovers printed border front cover minor scuffing partial closed tear head of spine slight creasing paper-glue residue spot on back cover still VG- bright copy. First edition of this surprisingly uncommon offprint recounting Lieut. Pierce’s 1882 Skagit River Expedition which explored rivers on both sides of the Cascades in 1882 and was one of the key reports to discourage a northern Cascades and Skagit River route for the Transcontinental Railroad. General Miles not only ordered Pierce to undertake the expedition to “obtain such knowledge of the country and its occupants as may be valuable at present or in the future to the military service†but also in response to an incursion by Eastern Washington Territory tribes into the area of the Baker and Skagit Rivers held by the Upper Skagit who were able to mediate the dispute and send the instigators back across the mountains. Pierce details his many contacts and experiences with Native Americans along his route from Fort Colville to the Puget Sound including Colville Indians drying salmon; the Okinakane Salish Chelan and others. Over 295 miles of terrain was covered by land and river crossed five mountain passes following the Stehekin River to Lake Chelan and then the Cascade River to the Skagit following a particularly rugged trail. His Native American guide and their interpreter argued vociferously over the route that nearly caused the expedition to turn back but they did succeed crossing the 5050 foot summit of the Cascade Pass. When they reached the bottom a 70-year old Skagit Indian and his wife could not believe white men had crossed the pass. Pierce not only made a gold quartz mine discovery West of Cascade Pass in the Eldorado Peak Area but also recommended at the end of his report to Gen. Miles that a force be maintained in the Okanogan and Methow Valleys to separate the conflicting Indigenous Peoples. Pierce 1834-1883 was a Major during the Civil War noted Latin scholar who published a translation of Virgil’s Aeneid in 1879 and after this expedition taught for six months at Pacific University until his untimely death.
