Alexander Caroline
The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition
New York: Knopf. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1999. Seventh Printing. Hardcover. 0375404031 . A near-fine volume in a near-fine DJ dustjacket in Mylar unclipped. Illustrated with B&W photos ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 212 pages; "Melding superb research and the extraordinary expedition photography of Frank Hurley The Endurance by Caroline Alexander is a stunning work of history adventure and art which chronicles "one of the greatest epics of survival in the annals of exploration." Setting sail as World War I broke out in Europe the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition led by renowned polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton hoped to become the first to cross the Antarctic continent. But their ship Endurance was trapped in the drifting pack ice eventually to splinter leaving the expedition stranded on floes--a situation that seemed "not merely desperate but impossible." Most skillfully Alexander constructs the expedition's character through its personalities--the cast of veteran explorers scientists and crew--with aid from many previously unavailable journals and documents. We learn for instance that carpenter and shipwright Henry McNish or "Chippy" was "neither sweet-tempered nor tolerant" and that Mrs. Chippy his cat was "full of character." Such firsthand descriptions paired with 170 of Frank Hurley's intimate photographs which are comprehensively assembled here for the first time penetrate the hulls of the Endurance and these tough men. The account successfully reveals the seldom-seen domestic world of expedition life--the singsongs feasts lectures camaraderie--so that when the hardships set in we know these people beyond the stereotypical guise of mere explorers and long for their safety." . Allen John Logan ed.
North American Exploration Volume 3: A Continent Comprehended
University of Nebraska Press 1997. Crisp and unmarked F/NF. Quarter cloth binding. 656pp. Jacket now in a new mylar cover. This third volume of North American Exploration covering 1784 to 1914 charts a dramatic shift in the purpose priorities and results of the exploration of North America. As the nineteenth century opened exploration was still fostered by the growth of empire but by the 1830s commercial interests came to drive most exploratory ventures particularly through the fur trade. By midcentury however as imperial rivalries lessened and the fur trade declined exploration was driven by the growing scientific spirit of the age -- although the science was often conducted in the service of a search for railroad routes or natural resources linked to military concerns. A clear transition took place as the spirit of the Enlightenment gave way to economic imperatives and to the science of the post-Darwinian age and exploration passed beyond discovery and geographical definition. This volume explores the resultant beginnings of an understanding of the continent and its native peoples. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. 8vo - 8" - 9" Tall. Twentieth-century technologythe icebreaker radio transmission nuclear power and aircraftopened the Arctic for survey basic research and observation. World War II saw the inhospitable circumpolar Arctic transformed into a theater of military operations. The Cold War and the missile age saw governments staking further claims because only a relatively short arc of maritime boreal waste separated North America and Eurasia. The complex interactions of air ice and water that drive circumpolar systems also serve as engines of oceanic and atmospheric circulation.
