‎Or des plaques légèrement passé, infimes frottements en tête et queue du dos, rares rousseurs éparses sans conséquence, sinon bel et très rare exemplaire. Référencé par Barbier, Tome 4, page 884. Une gravure en frontispice du Voyage à Cachemire. Derrière le pseudonyme de « Docteur B », se dissimule une personnalité aussi multiforme quexubérante : celle de lAngevin François Bernier (1620-1688), qui fut à la fois philosophe épicurien et libertin, disciple de Gassendi, médecin, écrivain et voyageur du Grand Siècle. Le présent ouvrage condense dabord plusieurs récits de ses périples à travers lAsie et lAfrique, effectués dans les années 1656-1669. Car la fascination quexerçait lOrient sur les élites de lépoque na pas épargné linsatiable curieux quétait Bernier, auquel un heureux concours de circonstances permit de devenir membre de la cour du dernier empereur moghol, Aurengzeb, et par là même, témoin privilégié de la vie sociale, politique et culturelle indienne. Il fut en effet le premier Européen à visiter le Cachemire, « Paradis des Indes » difficilement accessible aux étrangers : il décrit ici en détails limposant cortège qui accompagne les déplacements du Grand Moghol, composée de ses armées (infanterie, cavalerie), des artilleries, des serviteurs, de lentourage royal (en particulier les femmes du sérail),-soit environ 300 ou 400 000 personnes et pas moins de 150 000 animaux (chevaux, mules, chameaux, éléphants, bufs, ) - et de nombreuses tentes aux fonctions bien établies. Il sémerveille du faste et de la magnificence ainsi déployés, observe les faits et gestes des participants, les coutumes en vigueur pour les chasses, relate les péripéties survenues lors de larrivée dans les montagnes du Cachemire. Notre Européen ne tarit pas déloge sur la beauté et les richesses de cette contrée : paysages naturels ou urbains, ressources naturelles, diversité de la végétation et de la faune, caractère des habitants, tout lenchante. Bernier découvrit ensuite le Bengale et une partie du Sud de lInde, avant de rentrer en France par la Perse et la Syrie. Le « joli philosophe », comme lavait baptisé Saint-Evremond, se consacra alors à publier (avec succès) ses Mémoires, relatant ses douze années de pérégrinations exotiques, et noua de profondes amitiés avec La Fontaine, Boileau, Racine, Molière, Mme de la Sablière et Ninon de Lenclos. Il séteignit à Paris le 22 septembre 1688. Relié à la suite, se trouve un Voyage à Siam qui résume le récit du père Guy Tachard (1648-1712), lun des six mathématiciens jésuites mandatés en 1685 par lAcadémie des Sciences pour une expédition visant à améliorer les connaissances géographiques et cartographiques, astronomiques, maritimes de cette région du globe. Lobservation des étoiles, de phénomènes météorologiques et marins propres aux latitudes tropicales, linstallation au cap de Bonne Espérance pour de savants calculs sur la longitude de celui-ci, la route vers lAsie en passant par Java et Malacca, la somptueuse réception des ambassadeurs de Louis XIV à Bangkok et Siam, puis la visite de ce royaume (palais, navires, maisons, temples, fêtes et cérémonies, exploitations minières), constituent la deuxième partie de cet ouvrage, qui se termine par des considérations variées sur limplantation du christianisme ou encore les relations diplomatiques avec la France. Enfin, quelques « curiosités en Afrique » (dont lorigine na pu être déterminée) instruisent la jeunesse limousine non seulement de quelques animaux caractéristiques (les serpents, crocodiles, chevaux marins, flamingos ou spatules), mais également du commerce des gommes au Sénégal et des traditions des « Maures du désert ».
