Engraved illustration depicting Joshua's men about to embark on the entry into the Promised Land. Illustrated cartouche encloses engraved title and colophon. Fine strong impression on heavy handmade paper with ample margins all round. First original state unaltered by later colouration. Preserved flat in acid-free pH-balanced buffered archival paper. In a very fine condition. - - First edition. Willem Albert Bachiene 1712-1783 Dutch clergyman later a professor of geography and astronomy at the Illustere School Maastricht. Well known cartographer. The 3-volume "Heilige geographie of aardrijkskundige beschryving van het Joodsche land alsmede andere landen in de H. Schrift voorkomende" is considered among his most important works. It was published in Utrecht between 1763-1768 and included a suite of 12 fine geographical maps of the Holy Land and its neighbouring lands which Bachiene made during a period of ten years the first in as early as 1758. The map offered herewith is taken from this suite. Other important cartographic works of the Holy Land by Bachiene were included in the so-called "Jehovah Bible" i.e. "De Gansche H. Schrift Vervattende alle de regelmatige Boeken des Ouden en Nieuwen Testaments . Gods Gedenk-Naam Jehovah onvertaald gehouden" published in 1762 by N. Goetzee of Gorinchem shortly before the present map first appeared in book form. Whereas other single-sheet maps by Bachiene are in relative abundance the works from "Heilige geographie of aardrijkskundige beschryving van het Joodsche land" are very scarce seldom found in any state practically unavailable in their original uncoloured state. A magnificent visual tour and a celebration of fine early photography in Palestine. The fine technique of gravure printing Kupfertiefdruck Rakeltiefdruck developed by Karl Klic 1841-1927 is often referred to erratically as photogravure or heliogravure terms which describe another process. Experiments in gravure printing began in the 1850s and reproductions of rare prints by this method became common from the 1870s. It was not however until around 1880 that the development of this most brilliant and faithful monochrome reproductive technique yet known in the history of printing began. Klic adapted the cross-line screen to the old hand photogravure process but kept it secret rather than patenting it and the technique was reinvented by others in the years afterwards. Colour frontispiece with tissue guard and associated offset tanning to the title page includes several other coloured plates and numerous other black-and-white photographs and a map. Some of the illustrations are previously appeared in a book titled "Village Life in Palestine" by the illustrator. There is a gift inscription dated December 1922 from the Werribee higher elementary School scripture examination. Slight offset tanning of front and rear end pages the sewn binding is visible between pages 16 and 17 handling marks to the spine section of the binding title and part of the illustrated front board in a mock gold colour laid over a black image. "Here in these "morning lands" the traveller who has exhausted the sites and scenes of civilised Europe will come upon a new world where all is strange and has for him the charm of perfect novelty they would actually exhibits a life 4000 years old!" -- page 12 This book was printed pre-1914 because I can find no mention of the minor conflict that occurred around then.
