Prof. Haim Gerber
Economy and Society in an Ottoman City: Bursa 1600-1700

This book is devoted to the social and economic history of the western Anatolian city of Bursa in the 17th century. During this period Bursa was a major Middle Eastern center. The study examines the economic activity of the city commerce crafts and banking and attempts to evaluate the role of the waqf in this sphere. The author has based himself primarily on legal documents preserved in the city's archives .

A major concern of this book is whether a decline occurred in the Ottoman Empire at this time. The author concludes that this is primarily true for the end of the century but that this decline was cyclical rather than long-term. The author also points out that the gap between East and West was not as great as is often assumed.
The Max Schloessinger Memorial Foundation hardcover

The Great Arab Conquests

384pp. The fantastically short time in which this empire was built up the ludicrous simplicity of its "administration" under the barefoot khalifs these victories won through burning religious zeal and desperate courage by relatively untrained and unorganized armies make for exciting reading. No one-volume history has ever covered this remarkable material before and this is a book made vivid and relevant by General Glubb's knowledge of the terrain and of the Arab character his gift for seeing modern parallels the care he has taken not to assume background knowledge of the period on the part of his readers and the maps he has personally drawn. Includes an Index.
Hodder & Stoughton

The Changing of Conception of Time: Calendar and Clock from the Ottoman Empire to Republic of Turkey

This thesis explores the changing conception of time and the time measurable tools and its symbologies from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey. My aim is. to describe the Ottoman and Republican experiences on the issue of time and compare these with the European experience. In the Ottoman Empire from the fifteenth century on the calendars were prepared by the palace milneccims or astronomers. The Hicri calendar was used at the officially level until the end of the Empire; however at end of the eighteenth century the Rumi calendar was introduced as the Hicri calendar was not connected to the seasons. Apart from this the hour system was used ezani alaturka until the modernization period; then the hour system began to change. These alterations caused some dichotomies in "social life. In the Republican period time was adapted to the Western standards. The modernization and secularization of time in the Ottoman era resembled that of Europe in its early modernization phase. The constituting of the time symbologies and the time disciplines differed according to societies. It was realized that time could aid in the secularization and modernization of society by the power. From this point of view this paper seeks to establish methodological roots for the conception of time and its effects of secularization and modernization.
Boğaziçi University paperback

Mehmet Azakir YAlmaz
Political Thought in the beginning of the Ottoman Empire as expressed in Ahmed Husameddin Amasi's Kitab-ı Miratu`l-Muluk 1406

Ahmed bin Husameddin Amasi's Mirat al-Mutuk was one of the earliest sources on the political literature of the Ottoman World it was written in 1406 and submitted to Mehmet I 1413- 1421. Unlike the later Ottoman political works Mirat al-Mutuk reflects the characteristics of inherited Islamic political literature; it is more abstract and deals with the general aspects of good government instead of offering practical solutions to the contemporary administrative problems. Mirat al-Mutuk combines the teaching of two tradition; Ahlak and Adab. Ahlak literature has its origin in ancient Greek philosophy and Muslim philosophers followed the works of Aristotle Plato and Galen as the masters of this literature. The first part of Mirat al-Mutuk was written in the style of Ahlak literature and the main source of this part was Nasir al-Din Tusi's 1201-1274 Ahlak-i NasirL Kinalizade Ali Celebi's 1510-1572 Ahlak-i Alai was another example of this genre in the later Ottoman World and it was largely influenced by Ahlak-i NasirL The second part of Mirat al-Muluk depends on al- Ghazali' s 1058-1111 Nasihat al-Mutuk a mirror for princes book written in the style of Persian Adab literature. In this study the absorption of two pre-Islamic wisdom literature in the political works of Muslim thinkers and the transmission of this heritage to the Ottoman world was examined in the light of Amasi's Mirat al- Mutuk.
paperback
