Temelkuran Ece
Turkey: The Insane and the Melancholy
8vo, br. ed. 296pp. Starting with the basic question "what is this place?", award-winning journalist and novelist Ece Temelkuran guides us through her "beloved country". In challenging the authoritarian AKP government - for which she lost her job as a journalist - Temelkuran draws strength and wisdom from people, places and artistic expression. The result is a beautifully rendered account of the struggles, hopes and tragedies which make Turkey what it is today. Lamenting the commercialisation and authoritarianism which increasingly characterises Turkish society, Temelkuran sees hope in the Gezi Park protests of 2013, the electoral breakthrough of the progressive HDP party in 2015 and in the simple kindness of ordinary people. Much more than either straightforward history or memoir, Turkey: the Insane the Melancholy is like sitting with a friendly stranger who, over raki or coffee, reveals the secrets of this rich and complex country - the historic "bridge" between east and west.

TEVFIK FIKRET, (1867-1915).
[NEW ZEALAND'S GREEN LAND: UTOPIA OF THE OTTOMAN INTELLIGENTSIA] Yesil Yurt. [Servet-i Funoun: Journal Illustre Turc Paraissant Le Jeudi, Constantinople, No: 418, Vol. 15]. Directed by Ahmed Ihsan.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original illustrated wrappers. Folio. (33 x 24 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 32 p., richly ills. First published in any form of this symbolist poem, is the manifest of the attempt to settle in New Zealand by falling into pessimism, written during Sultan Abdülhamid II's tyranny period between two Constitutionalist regimes in the Imperial Ottoman, by Servet-i Fünûn literary scene leading of Ottoman poet Tevfik Fikret and his friends like Mehmed Rauf, Hüseyin Kadri, Dr. Esad Pasa, Hüseyin Cahit, Süleyman Nesip, Ahmet Hikmet Müftüoglu. In the westernization period, there is an escape especially the Servet-i Fünuncus to New Zealand, Scotland, and Finland. This escape can be seen as both alienation and help-seeking. Historical point of view, sociological research and in-depth analysis personal sufferings of intellectuals who attempted to escape can provide true findings and information, which can light this period, about the dualism of these intellectuals and their attempts to escape. Tevfik Fikret is one of the pioneers who symbolize this escape. Fikret does not leave the homeland, but in much poetry, he attributes a mission of escape and rescue to places in his poem. Places, where this mission is the most intense, are streets, Asiyan, grave, mosque, Istanbul, the parliament, palace, garden, and village. The first utopian texts in Turkish literature were dreams written in an effort to save the declining Ottoman State. In the period of Servet-i Fünûn [i.e. The Wealth of Sciences], which was a time of crisis, some utopias such as the Yesil Yurt [i.e. Green Land]. Fikret decided to go to New Zealand (after Manisa city) with friends from his literary circle. After a while, he changed his mind and began to construct a special house for his family on the Bosphorus, which he called "Asiyan" (meaning close friends). Asiyan was finished in 1906. New Zealand carries all the characteristics of a utopian place in this poem by Tevfik Fikret. (Utopias from the Middle East 13).

[FIRST BOOK ON THE EUROPEAN DISCOVERY AND CONQUEST OF AMERICA IN TURKISH] Amerika kit'asinin hîn-i kesf ü istîlâsinda zuhûra... [i.e. The History and Unfortunate Events that Occurred During the European Conquest of America..,]
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Lithographed Edition. First and Only Edition of this first Turkish book exclusively related to America. This very rare work (both in scarce institutional holdings and market rarity) is the first book in Turkish to describe the discovery and conquest of America. Thus, it is an important and early source on America in the Islamic world. "The first treatise [in Turkish] dedicated exclusively to America" (Strauss). It is printed in a format that is specific to the early printing period of the Ottoman Empire and is written in a tâliq script and has the appearance of a manuscript. It has neither a preface nor a proper title. The heading (serlevha) on the first page which is placed in a decorative floral design reads: "First chapter: On the Islands Discovered by the Venetian and Genoese seafarers, and, secondly, on the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus". It also contains the mandatory praise of the ruler, i.e., Sultan Abdülmecid, and indicates that it was "translated and transferred from some selected writings (ba'z-i evrâk-i müntahabe)". The dramatic events of the discovery and of the different conquests by the Spaniards are vividly described in plain and simple language. Though it is not free from clichés adopted from Western sources, the darker aspects of the European expansion are not omitted. Particular interest is devoted to the fauna and flora of the American continent. The modern territorial divisions of the American continent, and briefly, its political history, are dealt with in a special chapter at the end of the book. This chapter comprises information about both North and South America from the Polar Regions (Arazi-i kutbiyye) and "Russian America" (Amerika-i Rusiyye) to the Banda Oriental (Banda) or the Cisplatine Republic (Çisplatin) and the Province of Patagonia (Patakonya Eyaleti). It takes into account the latest developments. The last event referred to is General Soulouque's takeover in Haiti. "[.] ?in Santa Domingo (Sen Domeng), i.e., the island of Haiti, a general from the Negro people appeared in the Frankish year of 1847 and beat the Spaniards and the French. Assuming the title of 'king', he is known today as Faustin I." (p. 54). In fact, General Soulouque (Emperor of Hayti, (1782-1867)) had assumed the title of 'Emperor' in 1849. His reign lasted until 1859. (Source: Nineteenth-Century Ottoman Americana by Johann Strauss). Original wrappers. Occasionally slight stains on some pages and chipped on front cover, otherwise a very good copy. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 56 p. Litho. Only two copies in OCLC: (University of California, Los Angeles & Library of Congress, Karl Süssheim Collection, no. 1717.): 948879228.; TBTK 4412 / 5557.; Özege 1591 / 22639.

This exhibition consisting of impressionist, modern and contemporary paintings by 28 contemporary Turkish artists, shows special pieces from its collection with a conceptual and spatial reading and a presentation aware of each piece and its theme, from, medium and field. The Dardanelles campaign and naval victories in postcards.= Kartpostallarda Çanakkale savasi ve Çanakkale deniz seferi. [Exhibition catalogue]. The Çanakkale naval war has a special place in the history of naval warfare. Although offensive victories are the rule, the Çanakkale naval war is an exception because it was a defensive victory. This exhibition of Allied postcards depicting the invasion of the Dardanelles on March 18, 1915, and the subsequent land warfare campaign in Gallipoli consists of items painstakingly selected by collector and doctor of chemistry Dr. Seyhun Binzet among hundreds of postcards he acquired from a number of countries over decades to evoke an imagery of some of the darkest days in Turkish history. The exhibition is laid out in 12 sections presenting a panaroma of the Allied view of the many aspects of the Dardanelles Campaign: The Italian invasion of the straits of Çanakkale., Preparations for the Dardanelles Campaign., The naval victory of March 18 and the subsequent Gallipoli Campaign.

Üsküdar in engravings.= Gravürlerde Üsküdar.
New English Paperback. 4to. (30 x 21 cm). Text in English and Turkish. 40 reprint engraving plates (sizes: 28x20 cm) and 3 panoramic engravings in special pockets (sizes: -oblong- 27,5x58 cm). Üsküdar in engravings.= Gravürlerde Üsküdar. "Most of Western voyagers and artists produced their engravings in Istanbul. Between Istanbul engravings those of Üsküdar have a special place. Üsküdar was the break point for tthe Eastern voyagers going to the west and westerns voyagers going to Jerusalem or Asia. It was a place to see its own beauties witth the possibility to see the other side also and it became a zone for the engraving masters. We prepared a very beautiful exhibition following this art and history. During five hundred years since the beginning of the engraving until our days, we prepared some documents of engraving which brought to us the daily life of Üsküdar in ancient times and we collected them by the title of Üsküdar. [.]".
