‎War & nationalism: The Balkan Wars, 1912-1913, and their sociopolitical implications.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. [xxxix], [1], 884 p., ills. War & nationalism: The Balkan Wars, 1912-1913, and their sociopolitical implications. War and Nationalism presents thorough up-to-date scholarship on the often misunderstood and neglected Balkan Wars of 1912 to 1913, which contributed to the outbreak of World War I. The essays contain critical inquiries into the diverse and interconnected processes of social, economic, and political exchange that escalated into conflict. The wars represented a pivotal moment that had a long-lasting impact on the regional state system and fundamentally transformed the beleaguered Ottoman Empire in the process. This interdisciplinary volume stands as a critique of the standard discourse regarding the Balkan Wars and effectively questions many of the assumptions of prevailing modern nation-state histories, which have long privileged the ethno-religious dimensions present in the Balkans. The authors go to great lengths in demonstrating the fluidity of social, geographical, and cultural boundaries before 1912 and call into question the "nationalist watershed" notion that was artificially imposed by manipulative historiography and political machinations following the end of fighting in 1913. War and Nationalism will be of interest to scholars looking to enrich their own understanding of an overshadowed historical event and will serve as a valuable contribution to courses on Ottoman and European history.‎

Photographs of the Rumeli Shore of the Bosphorus from the mid-XIXth to the XXth century.= Konstantiniyye'den Istanbul'a. XIX. yüzyil ortalarindan XX. yüzyila Bogaziçi'nin Rumeli Yakasi fotograflari. [Exhibition catalogue]. The exhibition showcased works by masters of photography, who practiced their art in Istanbul from the end of the XIXth to the early years of the XXth century. Comprised from a selection of photographs from the Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Photograph Collection and from private collections, it revealed the magnificent structures, daily life and intriguing personalities of an Istanbul past. Istanbul has evolved into an industrial city, an enormous metropolis: its silhouette, architecture, vehicles, bridges, quays, streets and public spaces have attained an entirely different appearance. Masters such as Ali Sami Aközer, Félice Beato, Guillame Berggren, Abdullah Biraderler, Gülmez Biraderler, Ernest Edouard de Caranza, Sebah & Joaillier, Maurice Meys, Ali Enis Oza, James Robertson and Elisa Pante Zonaro document the nostalgic images of the city during their time, taking us on a pleasurable journey through the photographs they took in the difficult and challenging techniques of the time.‎

"Well-known specialists of Judeo-Spanish and newcomers explore the intersection of language and social identity in the chapters of this book. How did linguistic self-perception shape the thriving Judeo-Spanish speech and print cultures of the Jews in the Balkans, Turkey, and the Levant? Did their attitude toward language influence the crisis that they experienced after ncountering the assertive nationalisms of the twentieth century? Can identification with the language continue in other forms after emigration, or if the language no longer served the purpose of communication among the new generations?".‎

‎Belgium in the Ottoman capital: From early steps to 'la Belle Epoque'. The centenary of 'Le Palais de Belgique', 1900-2000.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 95 p., color and b/w ills. Belgium in the Ottoman capital: From early steps to 'la Belle Epoque'. The centenary of 'Le Palais de Belgique', 1900-2000. This book has been published to mark the centenary of Le Palais de Belgique Legation in Constantinople, now known as Istanbul. It begins with an account of the first diplomatic and commercial contacts between Belgium and the Ottoman Empire, which were initiated within a year after the new Belgian State achieved independence in 1830. It then goes on to describe in detail the experience of the various Belgian diplomats, businessmen, industrialists and travellers who came to Constantinople in the remaining years of the nineteenth century, during which time they played distinctive roles in the social life of the city as well as contributing significantly to the modernisation of the old Ottoman capital. The latter part of the book describes the acquisition and renovation of the building that came to be known as Le Palais de Belgique. This monograph is a valuable and unique addition to the bibliography of Istanbul studies, particularly concerning the participation of Belgians in the life of the city during the latter years of the Ottoman Empire.‎

‎Wooden Istanbul: Examples from housing architecture.= Istanbuls Holzhauser: Beispiele seiner historischen Wohnarchitektur.= Ahsap Istanbul: Konut mimarisinden örnekler.‎

‎New English Paperback. Large 8vo. (22 x 20 cm). In English, German, and Turkish. 339 p., color and b/w ills. Wooden Istanbul: Examples from housing architecture.= Istanbuls Holzhauser: Beispiele seiner historischen Wohnarchitektur.= Ahsap Istanbul: Konut mimarisinden örnekler. ''Istanbul's real interior view,'' writes Tanpinar in describing the wooden houses of Istanbul ''was created by a colorful civil architecture ornate with oriels, bow windows and projections, eaves and awnings, velvety soft lines and decorations.'' To his observations on the perished wooden seaside palaces of the Bosphorus he adds, ''Perhaps the history of the Bosphorus fascinates us more than others, for we no longer find in place what we are looking for. .What intrigues us, in fact is none other than the void these buildings leave behind.'' Today, although it is rarely encountered in the landscape of Istanbul, wooden housing architecture continues to preserve its place in the city's image as it is enshrined in collective memory. While many have us may not have spent a portion of our lives in such houses, the memories of family members and friends and the impressions from the literature of a recent past sustain our connection to these houses. Whether we are aware or not, this heritage enthralls us with the mystique of a lost world while offering certain clues on the creation of an inescapably reconstructed Istanbul identity, which is shaped not only through architecture but also an entire way of living.‎

Fleischer,Julia Bailey, Wheeler M. Thackston, Jr., and Sergei Tourkin. Whether by consulting the position of the planets, casting horoscopes or interpreting dreams, the art of divination was widely practised throughout the Islamic world. The most splendid tools ever devised to foretell the future were illustrated texts known as the "Falnama" ("Book of Omens"). Notable for their monumental size, brilliantly painted compositions and unusual subject matter, the manuscripts, created in Safavid Iran and Ottoman Turkey in the 16th and early 17th centuries, are the centre piece of "Falnama: The Book of Omens". This is the first book ever devoted to these extraordinary manuscripts, which remain largely unpublished, and sheds new light on their artistic, cultural and religious significance.‎

Cultural encounters in Anatolia in the Medieval period: The Italians in Anatolia in 12th - 15th centuries. Symposium Proceedings.= Orta Çag'da Anadolu'da kültürel karsilasmalar: 12-15. yüzyillarda Anadolu'da Italyanlar. Sempozyum bildirileri. Starting from Spring 2014, VEKAM organizes an international symposium once a year on Cultural Encounters in Anatolia in the Medieval Period. After the Georgian Empire and the Ilkhanids this year's theme is on "Italians in Anatolia during 12th and 15th Centuries" (Istanbul excluded). The symposium held on May 13th, 2016 at the premises of VEKAM in Ankara/ Turkey. "The Mongol victory over the Seljuks in 1243, the Mongol sack of Baghdad in 1258, which led to the commercial rise of Tabriz, and the rapprochement between Cilician Armenia and the Mongols resulted in a shift of the trade route across Anatolia. Ayas in Cilician Armenia replaced Antalya as its Mediterranean outlet. Mongol rule also furthered trade between Tabriz and the Black Sea port of Trebizond. It is along these itineraries that Italian merchants travelled to and from Mongol territories, as illustrated by the journeys of the father and uncle of Marco Polo and of Marco himself in the second half of the 13th Century. At Ayas on the shore of Cilicia Venice received trading privileges in 1261, well after Genoa's first treaty with the Armenian kingdom (1201). The Venetian element in Ayas' foreign merchant community grew with the general increase in the intensity of trade and with the inception of the state galley run or incanto. But international trading activity at Ayas, and the use of the tracks to Sivas, seems to have been cut short by the Mamluks' acquisition of the port in 1337...".‎

Four curious men came together to tell the story of a lost railway in Istanbul. At first all they had were small trains a handful of coal and a breath of steam. Years passed and they learnt a great deal from the documents and albums they had found and from a fifth author of a notebook that had come from the past and joined them by chance. The small trains carrying coal to the heart of the city from a coal mine in the Black Sea coast of Istanbul, were not just heroes of a nostalgic tale. Behind the curtain we opened, there was a huge military project where 5000 people had worked once in sweat and tears. We do not recount anything more or less than what we saw. We wish that those who read the story and see the photos are able to come into contact with history with the same amazement admiration and pleasure that we have. ‎Komana small finds (Settlement Archaeology Series 7).‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In English. 396 p., ills. Komana small finds (Settlement Archaeology Series 7). The aim of this book has been to collect papers on small finds recovered during the excavations at Komana between 2009 and 2018. It also marks the 10th year of excavations. Komana is a sanctuary site during the Hellenistic period, a place of worship for the kings as well as people from all over the country. It existed through the Roman and then the Byzantine period, was mentioned in the early Turkish written sources and reached the Turkish Republican period as a small rural village. The site is and was in a rural setting, surrounded by agricultural land along Yesilirmak and its economy depended on agriculture throughout its history. The rural character was not a limitation for the site, on the contrary an attraction due to the wealth it generated. There are clear imports from the Aegean among the scarce finds from the Hellenistic period just like the wealthy finds from the Byzantine and Danishmend / Seljuk periods indicating contacts with Corinth, Byzantium, Cilicia, Iran, Egypt. Contents: D. Burcu ERCIYAS / Archaeology at Komana.; Tasha VORDERSTRASSE / Experiencing the Medieval Churches of Komana.; Meryem ACARA ESER / Objects from Daily Life at Komana: Jewelry.; Yunus Emre KARASU - Nursen ÖZKUL FINDIK / Figured Ceramics Found at Komana (Tokat) Excavations.; Tasha VORDERSTRASSE / Lamps from the Roman - Middle Islamic Periods .; Gülseren KOYUN ESEN / Small Finds at Komana Made of Bone, Clay and Stone.; Evangelia PISKIN - Hilal KÜNTÜZ / Bone Working Waste: The Infamous Bone Worker and Other Craftsmen Peeking Through the Animal Bone Assemblage from Medieval Komana.; Ceren ÜNAL / Byzantine Coin Finds from the Komana Excavation: A Preliminary Study.; Polina IVANOVA / The Coins: Danishmend / Seljuk Phase.; Ömür BAKIRER / Komana Glass Bracelets, Preliminary Report.; Nurdan YÜCEL - Emine N.
