Over the course of centuries, charitable institutions such as schools, madrasas, caravansaries, public baths, mosques, and soup kitchens were built in the Seljuk and Ottoman lands as monuments of voluntary service to the people. Based on religious beliefs cast in the mold of beneficence, Anatolia was endowed with these monuments of compassion. One example of these institutions was the hospitals. In these institutions people were treated free of charge regardless of their religion, the language they spoke, or their race. Sifahenes were the hospitals of the time. They were treatment sanctuaries for travelers, merchants, and the homeless. These darüssifas, which assumed the role of hospitals, took shape during the era of Islamic civilization and continued to provide service throughout the Seljuk and Ottoman eras as wel. Sufahanes, regarded as "a house of healing" or "a refuge of health", were usually called a darüssifa (house of healing); however, in different eras and different places they were referred to as bîmarhâne (house for the sick), bîmâristan, mâristan (abode of the sick), dârülmerza (house of the sick), dârülâfiye (house of wellbeing), dârüssihha (house of health; Arabic) sifahane, (house of health; Persian) dârü't-tibb (house of medicine), sifaiyye (that which is for healing), and tîmârhâne (house of caressing).

An English architect William James Smith had worked in Istanbul from 1842 to 1856, a most politically influential period for the British Empire. Smith, after his appointment to the prestigious project for the new Istanbul Embassy Building of United Kingdom, whose conceptual design was probably by renowned architect Sir Charles Barry, had attained the interest and trust of Ottoman statesmen. Consequently he was assigned to realise a number of important architectural projects contributing to the modernization of Ottoman Architecture. Some of the Smith¿s important works for the Ottoman Porte are: A military hospital [Gumussuyu Askeri Hastanesi], a naval hospital, a school of medicine later known as Mecidiye Kislasi then Taskisla, a part of the Selimiye Barracks, a Glass Pavilion in Dolmabahce Palace and Tophane Imperial Kiosk [Tophane Kasri] for Sultan Abdulmecid; a building for the Board of Trade, renovation of the Naum Theatre. His commissions for so many important buildings, in spite of the presence of the notable architects, namely Balyan and Fossati, is a proof of Sultan¿s appreciation of Smith¿s works. Smith worked for both the British Empire and the Ottoman Sultan for a considerable number of grand scale projects. Being Smith¿s first work of grand scale, Taskisla has had a major role in the history of the Ottoman Empire and Istanbul in addition to its own interesting construction history.

Since the establishment of the Attalid dynasty in the 3rd century bc the ancient city of Pergamon had been the capital and royal residence of the Attalid kingdom as well as a more or less independent Hellenistic polis with all its civic institutions. Consequently this book concentrates above all on Pergamon as a city and a royal capital, on its inhabitants and its sacred spaces, which feature so prominently in the urban fabric and include the Sanctuary of Athena, the Great Altar, the Asklepieion and the Red Hall (or Red Basilica). Although the chronological focus lies on the Hellenistic epoch, the articles in this volume cover a span from prehistory to the Byzantine period, as is essential if one is to understand the prerequisites for the city's development within its landscape, and also to appreciate how the legacy of Hellenism was handed down, changed, enriched and also destroyed in subsequent periods.
