PINAR DANDIBOZ.
The construction of female citizenship through etiquette books: Turkey, 1930-1943.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English. 140 p. The construction of female citizenship through etiquette books: Turkey, 1930-1943. This book is an investigation into how the etiquette books of the early Republican period attempted to shape society in terms of class and gender issues. The analysis of the books, which are important tools to "civilize" society in both the public and private domains, is important because of their effects on the different dimensions of the period's discourse around citizenship. Through etiquette codes, the ideal citizen who would constitute the new privileged class of the Republic was to be constructed in accordance with the discourse of Westernization, but conspicuously adapted to local circumstances. Accordingly, not only the citizen's dress and deportment, but also the citizen's body and sexual life were to be completely renewed. On the other hand, while the books were defining the "acceptable" citizen, women were taken as an important measure of compliance. Thus, as the symbols of the new and modern life, women's appearance, manners, and all feminine pursuits became signifiers of the social status of modern Turkish men. Consequently, this book reveals that the class and gender dimensions of etiquette books are not independent of each other, but intersect and support one another.

Konstantin Nikolayeviç Leontyev, (1831-1891). Bizansçilik ve Sark meselesi.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 120 p. Konstantin Nikolayeviç Leontyev, (1831-1891). Bizansçilik ve Sark meselesi. This study analyzes a nearly forgotten Russian intellectual, Konstantin Nikolaevich Leontiev's (1831-1891) ideas on democracy, liberalism, nationalism, and the East-West dichotomy in the second half of the 19th century. Leontiev spent nearly ten years in the Balkan provinces of the Ottoman Empire as a diplomat, travelled and made observations in the conflict-ridden Ottoman Macedonia. Leontiev's political opinions, Byzantinism as he called it, took shape during his diplomatic service. At the basis of Leontiev's approach to politics, history, and religion laid a theory of aestheticism. He searched for beauty and poetic value in everything from politics to daily life. In line with his historical theory explaining the rise and fall of civilizations, Leontiev underlined that Russia should hold fast to the Byzantine heritage in order to avoid cultural decline. He idealized an anti-nationalist but strictly theocratic political regime. Leontiev's conservative utopia (or dystopia) presents a sui generis assessment of the theoretical deficiencies of such concepts like nationalism, democracy, and liberalism.

English translation by Ercüment Ozden, Fadime Özden, Akgun Ilhan. [English Edition]. "Kitab-i Bahriye of Piri Reis is authentic and important in that it shows the historical, geographical, ecological, social, cultural and natural characteristics of the lands it talks about in addition to the information he gives in the area of Turkish science and navigation in 16th century. We appreciate this work giving detailed information in many areas not only for our people but for universal culture also. The fact that the information in this book is not only for the interest of Turks but also for many other nations, and that it is not only about one part of the world but also about most of the known parts of the world including America shows us another characteristic of Kitab-i Bahriye. This work should be published again for the development of culture of tourism and for the purpose of directing young generations into the area of Turkish navigation".

PONTUS HELLSTRÖM.
Labraunda. A guide to the Karian Sanctuary of Zeus Labraundos.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 163 p. Color ills. Labraunda is an ancient site in south-western Turkey, excavated by Swedish archaeologists. This solitary place was a pilgrim sanctuary and the sacred center for the ancient Karians; a paved road for sacred processions led there from Milas. The shrine at Labraunda was the most important one in this part of Karia. This guide to the Swedish excavations contains both a description of the buildings that were erected in honour of the god Zeus Labraundos and an account of how the site was rediscovered in the 19th century. Labraunda is worth a visit not only because of the well-preserved remains of the unique banqueting hall Andron A and the other ruins, but also for the beautiful location and the splendid panorama view it offers. It is also unusual to find an ancient sanctuary, which, after its heyday, remained almost unchanged. It is therefore still possible to imagine what the sanctuary looked like in the 4th century BC, at the time when Karia was ruled by Maussollos and Idrieus.
