Il settimo volume della serie "Hierapolis di Frigia", a cura di Giuseppe Scardozzi, costituisce la versione integralmente rinnovata dell'Atlante di Hierapolis di Frigia, pubblicato nel 2008, e presenta i dati acquisiti nel corso degli ultimi sette anni di attività dalla Missione Archeologica Italiana. Il nucleo centrale dell'opera è la carta archeologica della città e delle necropoli, realizzata dai ricercatori dell'Istituto per i Beni Archeologici e Monumentali (IBAM) del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche. Il volume, che sintetizza anche i dati acquisiti durante i più recenti scavi archeologici condotti dalle varie équipes impegnate nell'ambito della Missione, mantiene lo schema della prima versione dell'Atlante, illustrando i risultati delle ricerche in una cartografia numerica in scala 1:10 suddivisa in 53 fogli completamente rinnovati nella veste grafica, e, come il precedente, rappresenta uno strumento fondamentale sia per la ricostruzione storica e la programmazione delle ricerche sia per la gestione e la tutela di tutta l'area archeologica di Hierapolis. Su una base cartografica numerica a grande scala, opportunamente aggiornata, sono documentate tutte le evidenze antiche presenti nell'area urbana e nelle necropoli che la circondano, oggetto di nuove campagne di rilievo archeologico; questi dati sono integrati con quelli provenienti dall'interpretazione di immagini satellitari ad alta risoluzione e di numerose riprese aeree effettuate con palloni aerostatici e droni, oltre che con quelli ricavati da estese campagne di prospezione geofisica. Il quinquennio si è contraddistinto per lo sviluppo di molteplici collaborazioni internazionali, l¿avvio di importanti progetti di restauro e l¿ampliamento delle aree di indagine, che hanno interessato l¿abitato di età romana sia nella parte centrale (in particolare il Teatro, il Santuario di Apollo, l¿insula 104), che quella settentrionale (con la Porta di Frontino, il Ninfeo dei Tritoni, le Terme-Chiesa), estendendosi anche al settore meridionale finora poco indagato (scavi lungo la Via di Frontino e il Ginnasio). Anche le ricerche sulle aree funerarie hanno visto un significativo approfondimento grazie a nuovi approcci interdisciplinari (analisi antropologiche e bioarcheologiche), sia nella Necropoli Nord (tomba 163d) che nella Necropoli Nord-Est e Sud-Ovest, mai prima oggetto di studi sistematici. Molto impegnative sono risultate anche le attività di ricerca sulle fasi di età bizantina, che si sono concentrate nell¿area della collina orientale: oltre allo scavo e consolidamento nelle Terme Ottagonali e nel Martyrion, si è potuta individuare la chiesa costruita intorno alla tomba dell¿Apostolo Filippo, fulcro di un complesso sistema rituale. Andnobody neglected to decorate their gardens with flowers. And the streams springing on ali sides never stopped flowing. When the wheat and barley were ripe our fields were like gold gilt seas. You would never find elsewhere olive trees such as ours, full of olives so much that the branches touched the ground, round and black olives, glimmering olive trees. Olive oil was a slow but reliable source of income. But figs. Figs filled the belt of the villagers with gold! Our figs were famous not only in Aydin province but also in the East, Europe and America. Such a thin skin almost non-existing, honeyed with the sun of Anatolia." Dido Sotiriou.

Polygonal masonry, starting in the Hittite Period in Anatolia, was practiced in various ways in the later periods. In this work the Cilician graves with polygonal masonry are analysed in detail covering their locations, topographic locations, reliefs, inscriptions, interior and exterior architectural features.
