ISABELLA CANEVA, GIULIO PALUMBI.
The Chalcolithic at Mersin Yumuktepe. Level XVI reconsidered.
New English Paperback. 4to. (30 x 21 cm). In English. 192 p., color and b/w ills. The Chalcolithic at Mersin Yumuktepe. Level XVI reconsidered. The final publication of Level XVI at Mersin-Yumuktepe is the terminal step of a long-term project. The aim of this publication is to integrate the data obtained by J. Garstang during the excavations conducted at Mersin-Yumuktepe (1936-39 and 1946-47) and published in 1953 in the monograph "Prehistoric Mersin", with those produced during the excavations carried out from 1993 to 2004, under the direction of I. Caneva, for a comprehensive reconstruction of one of the most notorious levels of occupation at Yumuktepe. The long prehistoric occupational sequence reconstructed by Garstang, the first to have been established in the archaeology of Cilicia, quickly became one of the main references in the Near Eastern, Levantine and East Mediterranean archaeology. In this framework, the unique evidence represented by the "Citadel" of the Level XVI was often considered as a "hall-mark" of Yumuktepe and a recurring "topos" of the archaeological discourse dealing with the chalcolithic societies of the region. To confront with such a "giant" of the Near Eastern archaeology and with the heritage left by Garstang has not been an easy task. The integration of heterogeneous data produced in the frame of different practices, epistemologies and narratives of archaeology has required a long, continuous and sometimes quizzical process of interpolation and negotiation between past and present archaeological evidence aimed at a detailed and attentive reconstruction of the economic, social and cultural developments of the Early-Chalcolithic community at Yumuktepe. Contents: Preface.; Giulio Palumbi and Isabella Caneva / An Introduction to Yumuktepe Level XVI.; Section I - The Settlement.; 1. Emanuela Brunacci / Topographic survey and graphic rendering 2. Isabella Caneva / Yumuktepe Level XVI: the field data 3. A monument in Lycia: The church of Saint Nicholas in Myra.= Likya'da bir anit: Myra'nin Aziz Nikolaos kilisesi.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English and Turkish. 172 p., color and b/w ills. A monument in Lycia: The church of Saint Nicholas in Myra.= Likya'da bir anit: Myra'nin Aziz Nikolaos kilisesi. Today, the church associated with St. Nicholas, namely the Church of St. Nicholas, is located in the ancient city of Myra, within the district of modern Demre. Resulting from the alluvium carried by the rivers, the structure remains 7.5-9 meters below ground level today. It is through these alluvial deposits that the structure had been preserved to a large extent. The Church of St. Nicholas was a prominent building in the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Period. The Church of St. Nicholas is a basilica type structure. The Outer Narthex of the church was reorganized during the 1862 renovation while the Inner Narthex rising above the older foundations of the structure, survived to our day. The oldest wall paintings in the church, which date to the 11th century AD, are painted on the vaults of the Inner Narthex. Arranged into six scenes, these wall paintings depict the bishops and emperors in council (there are two different painting levels in the area south of the middle vault). Prophet figures are depicted on the arches separating the vaults of the Inner Narthex.Inside the dome of the northeastern section of the church, we find the Communion Scene, in which Christ is offering the Apostles bread (rightward) and wine (leftward). This scene, which is dated to the 11th-12th centuries AD, reflects the stylistic characteristics of the capital Constantinople. The wall paintings on the South Burial Chamber have become clearer and more comprehensible after restoration. The wall paintings inside the burial niches on the northern wall of this section have been restored. Among these, there are 5 feast scenes, 15 scenes from the life story of St. Nicholas depicted on the arches of the niches and 45 figures of saints, bishops, martyrs and monks. During the restorations works, new geometric and vegetal motifs have also been discovered.

New Turkish Original cloth bdg. HC. Folio. (34 x 27 cm). Edition in Turkish. 2 volumes set: (808 p.), color ills. Harmony of line and colour: Illuminated manuscripts documents and calligraphy in the Sadberk Hanim Museum Collection. 2 volumes set. Selection of the museum's magnificient collection of illuminated manuscripts and calligraphy. Sadberk Hanim Museum's collection of illuminated manuscripts and calligraphy was created as a result of the special interest in this subject felt by Sevgi Gönül, who herself had an outstanding collection of calligraphic panels. Sevgi Gönül served as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Museum until her death in 2003 and under her direction the collection was enriched with rare manuscript Korans, prayer books, albums, documents such as imperial edicts, warrants and endowment deeds, hilye-i serif panels and calligraphic wall panels by renowned Ottoman calligraphers. Sevgi Gönül also collected rare examples of Sufi panels. Over time both collections developed and diversified to a noteworthy degree. Sevgi Gönül's personal calligraphy collection was at her own wish transferred to Sadberk Hanim Museum in 2004, following her premature death. Sadberk Hanim Museum's collection of manuscripts and calligraphy totalled 915 works at the start of 2019. Apart from the 157 works belonging to the Sevgi Gönül collection, the museum collection comprises the Hüseyin Kocabas collection, the Pirizade collection, works purchased at auction in Turkey and abroad, and donations. The Hüseyin Kocabas collection of 601 works consists of Korans, copies of the Dela'ilü'l-Hayrat,miscellanies, calligraphers' diplomas and literary works. The Pirizade collection consists of 28 manuscripts, nine of which are Korans. Korans and prayer books that are richly illuminated on every page, albums, documents such as endowment deeds, property deeds, imperial edicts, are invaluable sources of information for Ottoman social and economic history, architecture and art. Examples preserved in Sadberk Hanim Museum are enlightening as regards Ottoman calligraphic style between the late fifteenth and early twentieth centuries, while the signatures on these works increase our knowledge of the master calligraphers, artists and illuminators who created them.

HUGH POPE.
Sons of the conquerors: The rise of the Turkic world.
Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. 413 p., b/w ills. Sons of the conquerors: The rise of the Turkic world. A detailed portrait of the Turkic people explores events since World War I that have rendered the nation a vital NATO ally and the site of a secular Islamic democracy, tracing centuries of citizen ancestry to offer insight into how Turkish culture has significantly impacted history. By the co-author of Turkey Unveiled. 20,000 first printing. With the end of the Soviet Union began independence for a half-dozen Turkic countries, where Istanbul-based reporter Pope has made forays for the past 15 years, traveling in both presidential airliners and faltering taxis. Pope does not organize his trips chronologically, but, rather, according to what he believes are the seven collective characteristics of Turkic peoples. One is the "military vocation" epitomized by Turkey itself, whose military is regarded as the guardian of secularism; a concomitant trait is predilection for the political strongman. None of the new Turkic states is a liberal democracy, and none less so than Turkmenistan, home to a shambolic personality cult devoted to its dictator. Pope's talks with officials are always revelatory of local and international politics, but readers will most value his perceptiveness about Turkic culture when he, speaking fluent Turkish, meets ordinary people. Some of these are Uygurs, the Turkic minority suppressed by communist China, and others are part of the Turkic diaspora in Europe and America. A sensitive presentation of how Turks view themselves and their future.

EBRU BOYAR, KATE FLEET.
A social history of Ottoman Istanbul.
Fine English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. [xxi], 354 p., 50 numerous b/w ills. A social history of Ottoman Istanbul. Using a wealth of contemporary Ottoman sources, this book recreates the social history of Istanbul, a huge, cosmopolitan metropolis and imperial capital of the Ottoman Empire. Seat of the Sultan and an opulent international emporium, Istanbul was also a city of violence shaken regularly by natural disasters and by the turmoil of sultanic politics and violent revolt. Its inhabitants, entertained by imperial festivities and cared for by the great pious foundations which touched every aspect of their lives, also amused themselves in the numerous pleasure gardens and the many public baths of the city. While the book is focused on Istanbul, it presents a broad picture of Ottoman society, how it was structured and how it developed and transformed across four centuries. As such, the book offers an exciting alternative to the more traditional histories of the Ottoman Empire. First Edition.

Politically, his orientation was more conservative, compared to writers such as Namik Kemal. He was a prolific writer, more than 250 of his works have survived. From 1878 on, he published the newspaper Tercüman-i Hakikat (Interpreter of Truth). His editorship and publication of Olga Lebedeva's translations of Russian literature into Turkish served as an introduction of Tolstoy, Lermontov and Pushkin to Turkey's readership. In addition, he was a patron and teacher to Fatma Aliye, one of the most famous female Ottoman authors. (Source: Wikipedia). In this book, Ahmet Mithat describes how important it is to correct the economic backwardness of the Ottoman Empire and to "work" to save people from the economic collapse.
