Prepared by Ahmet Kamil Cihan, Salih Yalin, Mesut Sandikçi. Al-Hamadânî was a mystic Persian theologian responsible for the propagation of the Kubrâwîyah order of Sufis (Islamic mystics) in Kashmir. A scion of a famous Persian family of Sayyids (descendants of the Prophet Muhammad), he became a dervish (itinerant holy man) and traveled extensively throughout the Middle East. He visited Kashmir in 1372, 1378, and 1385. Through his efforts and those of his followers, the Kubrâwîyah order of mystics became popular in Kashmir. Al-Hamadânî's best-known work is his Dhakhîrat al-muluk ("Treatise on the State") -a study of political ethics. His burial place, Kulab, is still a pilgrimage site. (Britannica).‎

‎New Turkish Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 968 p. Nuzhat al-arwâh wa rawdat al-afrâh.= Nüzhetü'l-ervâh: Bilgelerin tarihi ve özdeyisleri. Translated from the Arabic. Based on the manuscript of the Süleymaniye manuscript Library, Ref. Hamidiye 2382, Fatih 4515. Shahrazuri was a 13th-century Muslim physician, historian and philosopher. He was of Kurdish origin. It appears that he was alive in AD 1288. However, it is also said that he died in the same year. Shahrazuri was an important historian and scholar of the late 13th century who composed a biographical dictionary of both ancient Greek and early Muslim learned men. Although he wrote a major biographical work on scholars, very little is known about his life, including the dates of his birth and death. Perhaps the most well known work by him is Nuzhat al arwâ? wa raw?at al-afrâ?. According to the correction and reprint by M A Khurshid, there are several copies of the book; one of them in the John Rylands library in Manchester. Edward Granville Browne mentions two medical works attributed to him, one in Arabic and another in Persian language.(E. Browne, p. 100) One of his philosophical works is commentary about philosopher Suhrawardi called Shar? ?ikma al-ishrâq. It is also said that the well known commentary works of Qutb al-Din Al Shirazi called Durrat al-Taj about Suhrawardi's Hikmat al-Ishraq is based on Shar? ?ikma al-ishrâq. It is also said that another of his work regarding Suhrawardi's Illumnationist philosophy is the most faithful, called al-Shajarah al-Ilahiyyah (The Divine Tree).‎

‎Hierapolis di Frigia XIII: Virtual Hierapolis. Virtual Archaeology and Restoration Project, (2007-2015) (with DVD).‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (31 x 22 cm). In English. 232 p., color ills. With a DVD. Hierapolis di Frigia XIII: Virtual Hierapolis. Virtual Archaeology and Restoration Project, (2007-2015) (with DVD). This new volume in the series dedicated to Hierapolis presents the results of an ambitious project concerning the 3D reconstructions of its main monuments and the virtual restoration of the artefacts and pictorial and mosaic decorations, present above all in the houses of the city's aristocracy. Some of these items have already been described in previous publications, but in this volume, together with hitherto unseen images, they are part of the Virtual Tour of the city, which can also be experienced via on-line and off-line platforms, choosing from three different visitor itineraries. As well as the specific need to study the ancient architecture by means of 3D virtual reconstructions, the creation of the Virtual Tour of Hierapolis provides an answer to the questions posed by the rising number of tourists, which now exceeds two million a year, placing the city, together with Ephesus, among the most popular archaeological sites in Turkey. These reconstructions proved to be highly effective communication tools, enabling the viewing public to understand the appearance of the ancient buildings. Some of these virtual reconstructions were published in 2009 in the leaflet on Virtual Hierapolis, distributed to scholars and visitors. M. Limoncelli was a constant presence in the MAIER in those years, but it was only during his Research Doctorate at the Sacro Cuore Catholic University in Milan, in the years 2013-2016, that his Project was systematically fulfilled. ‎The Carians overseas: Egypt - Iran - Israel.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English. 325 p., color ills. The Carians overseas: Egypt - Iran - Israel. THE CARIANS OVERSEAS is a documentary project, which follows the traces and documents the remains of the Carians, who, starting from the 10th BC, have worked in Egypt, Iran and Israel either as mercenaries or stonemasons. Being among the first settlers of the region of Southwest Anatolia, the Carians raised the world's first women admirals Artemisia I and Artemisia II, bequeathed us the Maussolleion, the monumental tomb of King Mausolus, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, offered the word "mausoleum" to world literature and preserved their culture and traditions for thousands of years. Based on the geographical features of their land, they lived either on the mainland, the islands or in locations overseas. They were known as good soldiers, fearless sailors and pirates with advanced warrior skills. Ancient Egyptian sources describe the Carians, who went to Egypt to work, as "men of bronze coming from the sea". According to Herodotus of Halicarnassus, the Carians had created the tradition of fixing a handle to a shield, fastening a crest and a tassel on the helmet and adorning and painting the shield. In ancient Persian sources, the Carians are referred to as people serving in the Persian army and navy, who were, besides their warrior character, skilled stonemasons, artisans, craftsmen and qualified in handling heavy goods. Being one of the most interesting civilizations of Anatolia, the Carians have proved their existence in the countries they have been, by inscribing their initials on stones in the Carian language and thus leaving important information regarding the places where they have lived, camped as well as their expedition routes. Following the traces of the Carians in Egypt, Iran and Israel and documenting their remains in museums and archaeological sites despite great difficulty, THE CARIANS OVERSEAS is an important source, for both the information it contributes to Carian archaeology and the research stories in its content.‎

‎Sacred spaces and urban networks: 11th International ANAMED Symposium.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (25 x 20 cm). In English. 200 p., ills. Sacred spaces and urban networks: 11th International ANAMED Symposium. With its history that goes back millennia, Anatolia is studded with sites from different eras that are deemed "sacred". The collected essays in this volume present diachronic and synchronic studies of Anatolian sacred sites from the medieval period onward that situate them within various spatial, urban, and sociocultural dynamics. Each article explores unique case studies that illustrate the role of human agency in the creative process of transforming awe-inspiring sites into sacred spaces. Collectively, the volume reveals that the magnetic qualities of such destinations create a web of sanctity, as well as a complicated matrix of economic, political, and social relations. The scholarly contributions published here emerged from the 11th International ANAMED Annual symposium, entitled "Sacred Spaces + Urban Networks" and held at Istanbul's Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (ANAMED) in December 2016. This symposium brought together prominent scholars in the field and former fellows of the research center, including the volume's editors. While our initial goal was to explore different layers of sacredness in Anatolia, ultimately, the volume sheds light on parallels among case studies and presents the connectedness between these layers.‎

Kitap bir sozluk ve secilmis kaynakca ile sona eriyor. This is one of the first guidebooks for the general public to deal with the Byzantine and Turkish archaeology of an ancient town. Following 50 years of excavation by the Italian Archaeological Mission in close collaboration with the Turkish authorities, it is now possible to describe and illustrate the post-classical remains of Hierapolis of Phrygia. The book first explores a number of themes, from the changing environment to religion and agriculture, as well as discussing objects that illustrate day to day life in the medieval town. An itinerary then guides the visitor to the site with detailed information on things to be seen, from the monumental remains of the cathedral, the shrine of St. Philip and the castle, to more humble tenth century Byzantine houses and the remains of early Turkish farms on the hills above the town. The book concludes with a glossary and a select bibliography.‎

‎KEMAL H. KARPAT.‎

‎Elites and religion from Ottoman Empire to Turkish Republic.‎

‎Fine English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 282 p. "Professor Karpat, one of the most prominent names in the field of Political History, explores the social structure of Ottoman Empire through different eras and looks at Turkey's multi-party democracy culture from a historical perspective. His articles interpret the Ottoman history for broader audience and lay a vivid picture of events of recent history in front of our eyes. Professor Karpat's remarkable articles take us back to 18th century Ottoman days and examine change and modernization on those days, his work also looks into the independence and interaction of various social groups within a muslim state. The Ottoman social structure produced a unique way of practicing "secularism" where spiritual issues regarding faith and administrative issues regarding everyday state politics were kept completely independent from each other; one was dealing with earthly matters of day to day life of subjects of the Ottoman sultan, the other was to aid the followers of specific faith in their practice of religion and to prepare for after-life. Ottomans, despite having a highly complex social structure accommodating a number of ethnic groups and various religious orders, had successfully sustained freedom of faith by adopting the 'millet' system. Every non-muslim community represented by its leader was regarded as a 'millet' and enjoyed an absolute autonomy and freedom within its own faith and community in terms of practice of religion, language, social relations. During the Tanzimat era a new generation of religious leaders; who were relatively free from state regulations emerged among Ulema and unlike their predecessors they were not dignitaries. The social status of this newly emerging group from within well- established Ulema which was preoccupied at times to legitimise social and political change from an Islamic perspective or at other times tried to maintain status-quo siding with government, overlapped with the social image of the Ottoman middle-class. The fact that the new generation Ulema had common characteristics with ordinary middle-class people had a profound impact on Ottoman-Turkish political history. Consequently, the road map of 'modernity and secularism' set in Republican Turkey was identified by both the state represented by military and civilian bureaucrats and by people represented by local notables.".‎
