Prens Dimitri Cantemir: Türk musikisi bestekâri ve nazariyatçisi. [= Prince Dimitrie Cantemir: Theorist and composer of Turkish music]. Translated by Selçuk Alimdar.
Fine English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 16 cm). In Turkish. 216 p., b/w ills. Turkish Edition of Popescu-Judetz's 'Prince Dimitrie Cantemir: Theorist and composer of Turkish music'. The present book is not limited to the study of Cantemir's treatise on Ottoman music. It first gives us the complete story of his eventful and dramatic life including his Russian stage and an account of his multifarious activities. In the same chapter the writer goes through not only his history of the Ottoman empire but other Cantemir books and other Romanian sources about the Prince and familiarises us with the content of these works. Her quotations from and references to various non-standard sources make this part of the book more useful and appealing. I believe this introduction will become a standard source for anybody who is to consider Cantemir's life, his story and other works.

ENGIN ÖZENDES.
Photography in the Ottoman Empire, 1839-1923.
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In English. 356 p. B/w and color ills. "Photography in the Ottoman Empire 1839-1923 provides an account of the history of photography in the Ottoman Empire between the years 1839-1923, an important though neglected field in the history of an early photography. The sultans of the Ottoman Empire traditionally shaped the arts of their day, and their enthusiastic reaction to the discovery of photography was to be crucial in the development of photography in the Empire. This third edition of the book published by YEM Publications has been updated and enlarged to incorporate new information gathered over the years and many new photographs that have been added to my archive. I have made sure that the revised text comprises the latest information available on the subject. Many nation states were created in the former Ottoman territories in Europe, Asia and Africa. I have not included the individual photographic histories of these countries but endeavoured to focus primarily on photography within the present boundaries of the Republic of Turkey. A list of photographers who worked in the Ottoman Empire has been provided to assist all those who are interested in the history of photography in Turkey and the Middle East. The names of photographers that I have come across in documents written in Ottoman Turkish script have been given as spelt. The first two editions treated the story of photography in the Ottoman Empire from the announcement of its discovery in 1839 up to 1919, but this new edition has been extended up to the year 1923 when the Turkish Republic was founded. Researching the history of photography is an unending task requiring a lifetime's dedication."

FILIZ ÖZDEM.
Amasya: Yâr ile gezdigim daglar. Photographs by Ali Konyali - Tarkan Kutlu.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (29 x 23 cm). In Turkish. 400 p., color and b/w ills. "Amasya has traces in Dogantepe Höyük that go as far back as to the latter period of the Late Neolithic Age and, as Sevket Dönmez notes in his article, "Amasya is one of the rare Anatolian cities to have kept its name (Amasea, Amaseia, Amasseia, Amaseia Hadriane, Amaseia Severiane Antoniane, Amaseia Severeia Alexandreia) almost intact from time immemorial. Amasya is on the Yesilirmak River that in Hittite texts is named 'Kummeshmaha' and in the classical era was called 'Iris'. The Yesilirmak flows from west to east along the long narrow channel it carves in the limestone and travertine rocks. Towering immediately north of the river is Mount Harsena where the city's castle is built." It is a common belief that the love of Ferhat and Sirin found a home in Amasya. In his article Sevket Dönmez remarks that, "the Anatolian version of the epic love story of Princess Sirin and Ferhad - Sirin being the sister of Queen Mahmene Banu, Azerbaijan's ruler of the city of Erzen; Ferhad being the region's famous craftsman- is set in Amasya where it has left a mark on the town's historical topography and archaeology. The two simple graves side by side on Mount Ferhad today have been attributed to Ferhad and Sirin, illustrating how contemporary and popular the story is." Amasya, Maid of the Mountains, is about the cultural heritage of a city that has been the cradle rich in popular culture and belief systems. Sevket Dönmez looks at the city as an antique settlement and portrays Pontic Cappadocia in his article about Oluz Höyük. E. Emine Naza Dönmez emphasizes the importance of Harsena Castle and Kizlar Sarayi for the city and she also focuses on the architecture in the Turkish Period. Muzaffer Doganbas describes the woodcraft in the region, and also the belief systems and sacred buildings. I. Hakki Göztas scrutinizes the historical development of the city and its secular architecture. The photographers Ali Konyali and Tarkan Kutlu held a mirror to the city of Amasya in this monograph prepared by Filiz Özdem.

JÜRGEN SEEHER.
A mudbrick city wall at Hattusa. Diary of a reconstruction.
New English Original bdg. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). In English. 232 p. Color ills. "Situated in Central Anatolia, Hattusa remained the capital city of the Hittites from 1650/1600 to around 1200 BC. Here, as recently as 2003 to 2005, the German Archaeological Institute has rebuilt one stretch of the mudbrick city wall. The funding for the endeavor -the first of its kind worldwide- has been generously provided by JT International. The scope of this project in experimental archaeology has been to recreate a part of the wall using the same materials the Hittites had at hand when they built their original walls so long ago. Each step necessary for the construction was fully documented so as to enable us to assess not only the amount of building materials required but also the manpower and time the Hittites must have invested in the various tasks of construction. This volume presents the results gleaned from this documentation. From the production of the first mudbrick to the dedication of the finished structure, each and every undertaking has been described in detail and is presented here accompanied by 573 illustrations".

Balance weights in the Aegean world. Classical and Hellenistic periods. Translated from Turkish into English by Inci Türkoglu.
New English Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. [x], 210 p., color ills. 300 copies were printed. Balance weights in the Aegean world. Classical and Hellenistic periods. Translated from Turkish into English Inci Türkoglu. Historically, balance weights are as old as the balances themselves. Actually, balance and weight examples of Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Hittite civilisations are known from wall paintings, reliefs, papyri and collections. However, the scope of this book is the balance weights produced and used in the Aegean world during the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Balance weights were among the instruments of public sphere (instrumenta publica) of antiquity and they constitute an important group of antiquities worth studying for their unit marks, symbols, depictions, inscriptions and ornaments. However, balance weights have been among the most neglected artefacts within archaeological research. Certainly, this work at handbook level should not be expected to fill the gap entirely, but rather call attention to this field. The examples were chosen from the city-states in the Aegean world and cover only those which bear ethnic or symbol (parasemon). CONTENTS: FOREWORD. INTRODUCTION. Scope, material, and sources. History of research in the light of basic publications. 1. AN OVERVIEW OF WEIGHTS: Form, material, and manufacture. Symbols (parasema) and other depictions. Denominations. Ethnic.
