This book is a study of the Ottoman military and diplomatic involvements in Iran during the critical years that followed the collapse of the Safavid dynasty. Contrary to the image of an Empire that followed largely passive and defensive policies in the early eighteenth century, this study will reveal that the Ottoman Empire was remarkably proactive in this period. The Ottomans under the political leadership of Damat Ibrahim Pasha (d. 1730) designed their Iranian policies during the 1720s with a distinct awareness of European international politics as well as of local Iranian politics and with the aim not just to protect but also to improve the position of the Empire in a changing global order. Diplomacy constituted an important dimension of the Ottomans' engagements in Iran, culminating in the 1724 Partition Treaty with Russia, which arranged for the division of the Safavid territory between the Ottoman and Russian empires. War-making constituted the other facet of Ottoman engagements in Iran, and was motivated by complex military, strategic, administrative and economic calculations. Finally, their engagement in Iran brought the Ottomans in contact, and for a time, in conflict with another power, the Afghan invaders of Isfahan. In the religio-legal disputes with the Afghan ulama, the Ottoman side evoked a universalist understanding of the caliphate in anticipation of trends that historians have conventionally dated to the late nineteenth century.

"The discovery and rescue of the mosaics of Zeugma, the ancient Greco-Roman crossing point on the Euphrates, is regarded as the most important recent archaeological event. The book comprises some of the pavements on display in Gaziantep Museum, Gaziantep, Turkey. Zeugma, like the rest of the region was destroyed by the Sassanian king Shapur I in 256, when he raided the eastern lands of the Roman empire. Although the town showed some recovery in the early Byzantine period, and still served as a crossing, this was not comparable with its ancient glory. Thus it is not surprising that while the earliest of the mosaics discovered at Zeugma dates from the late first century CE, the latest belong to the period before the destruction. Almost all of the damage seen in the recovered mosaics, especially in the parts made of glass mosaic cubes, is the result of the fire which accompanied the Sassanian sack of 256. Research has shown that the tesserae of these mosaics were mostly produced from the coloured stone collected from the banks of the Euphrates, and supplemented by glass tesserae for missing hues such as dark green, orange, or light blue.".

Istanbul Universitesi?nde Halet Cambel'in kurarak gelistirdigi Prehistorya Anabilim Dali, ilk bastan itibaren arkeolojik malzemenin incelenmesine dayali uygulamali egitim anlayisi ile Turkiye?de cagdas arkeolojinin oncusu olmustur. Boyle bir egitim sisteminin gelistirilmesini saglayan da, Cambel'in buyuk bir ongoru ile kurdugu Prehistorya Laboratuvari ile Turkiye?den ve dunyanin pek cok farkli bolgesinden gelen arkeolojik malzemenin toplandigi zengin koleksiyonudur. Yakindogu arkeolojisinde tarihoncesi alaninda arastirma, kazi, yayin, egitim ve koruma alanindaki calismalariyla onemli bir yeri olan Mehmet Ozdogan, bilgi birikimini ve deneyimini bu zengin koleksiyona borclu oldugunu her zaman belirtmistir. Bu baglamda her turlu arkeolojik calismanin temelini olusturan malzeme bilgisine buyuk onem veren Ozdogan, arkeolojik buluntularin yalniz bicimsel degil hammadde ozellikleri ve yapim teknolojisi bilgisiyle birlikte ele alinmasi gerektigini ongorerek 1980 yilinda baslattigi Malzeme Bilgisi dersini, surekli gelistirerek emekli oldugu 2010 yilina kadar kesintisiz vermistir. Tarihoncesi donemlerde kullanilan baslica buluntu turleri ile bunlarin yapim yontemlerini ana cizgileriyle tanitmak ve boylelikle arkeoloji ogrenimine yeni baslayan ogrencilere yardimci olmak bu kitabin ana amacidir. Bununla birlikte her donemde kullanilan baslica hammadde turlerinin ozellikleri, bunlarin islenmesinde kullanilan yontemler ve adi sikca gecen bazi buluntu turleri de ana cizgileriyle ele alindigi icin bu yayin, daha sonraki kultur donemleriyle ilgili uzmanlik alanlarinda calisacak genc meslektaslarimiz icin de yol gosterici niteliktedir. Ulkemizde ilk defa malzeme ile hammadde ve teknoloji iliskisi uzerine ceviri olmayan Turkce terimlerin kullanildigi bu basvuru kitabi, Mehmet Ozdogan'in 30 yillik Malzeme Bilgisi dersinin deneyimleri ve 55 yillik meslek birikimleriyle hazirladigi onemli bir eserdir. Münir Bey was a Turkish legal counsel in international law to the "Sublime Porte" (imperial government) of the late Ottoman Empire and a diplomat of the Republic of Turkey during its early years. Ertegun married Emine Hayrünnisa Rüstem in 1917 and the couple had three children, two of whom were Nesuhi and Ahmet Ertegun, the brothers who founded Atlantic Records and became iconic figures in the American music industry. Born in Constantinople to a civil servant father, Mehmet Cemil Bey, and a mother Ayse Hamide Hanim, who was a daughter of Sufi shaykh Ibrahim Edhem Efendi, he studied law at Istanbul University and graduated in 1908. He was a legal counsel for the Ottoman Ministry of Foreign Affairs, when he saw the birth of his first son, Nesuhi, on 26 November 1917, in Constantinople (now Istanbul), during the First World War. Taking part in an Ottoman delegation with a mission to search reconciliation with the Nationalists in Ankara, by the end of 1920, changed his destiny. While the two Ottoman Ministers heading the delegation returned to Istanbul after not achieving an understanding with the revolutionaries led by Mustafa Kemal Pasha he chose to join the National Struggle and remained in Ankara, leaving behind his young wife and three-year-old son, Nesuhi. He became an aide to Mustafa Kemal during the Turkish War of Independence and the chief legal counsel of the Turkish delegation to the resulting Treaty of Lausanne in 1923. After the Western powers recognized the newly founded Republic of Turkey in 1923, he was sent to Geneva to the League of Nations as an observer for the Turkish Republic. During this assignment, he frequently went to Paris for the Ottoman public debt negotiations. Following this posting to the League of Nations, he was appointed ambassador to Switzerland (1925-1930), France (1930-1932), the United Kingdom (1932-1934) and the United States (1934-1944). As the Republic's ambassador to Washington, Ertegun opened his embassy's parlors to African American jazz musicians, who gathered there to play freely in a socio-historical context which was deeply divided by racial segregation at the time. Ambassador Ertegun became the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in May 1944. He held this last post until he died in Washington, D.C., of a heart attack in November of the same year. In April 1946, a year after World War II had ended, his body was carried back to Istanbul by the USS Missouri and buried in the garden of Sufi tekke, Özbekler Tekkesi in Sultantepe, Üsküdar near his shaykh grandfather Ibrahim Edhem Efendi, who was once the head of the Tekke. (His two sons Nesuhi and Ahmet Ertegun also rest there.). When Ertegun died, there was not yet a mosque in Washington, D.C., at which his funeral could be held. The Islamic Center of Washington was built as a result.

Traditional fine writing form peculiar to Ottoman law. Autograph signed Mekkizâde. Mekkizade was 100th Turkish / Ottoman sheik-ul-islam, kazasker and professor (muderris). In 1818-1819, 1823-1825 and 1833-1846 he served as the sheikh-ul-Islam and scholar three times and in the ruling period of Sultan Mahmud II and Sultan Abdulmajid. Extremely rare.
