Ziya Pasha, pseudonymous of Abdul Hamid Ziyaeddin was an Ottoman writer and translator. He was, along with Ibrahim Sinasi and Namik Kemal, one of the most important authors of the Tanzimat period. He held several offices in the Ottoman State. From 1865 he was a leading member of the Young Ottomans. In 1867 he went together with Namik Kemal to Paris and London, where he published a newspaper called Hürriyet (freedom). His return to the Ottoman Empire was followed by tenures as governor of Cyprus, Amasya, Konya, Aleppo and last Adana.

P. pon de la succession de feu le Comte A. de Camondo. i.e. On behalf of the succession of Count Abraham Salomon Camondo 1781-1873. Probably it's signed by his advocate of Moise de Camondo. Recipient is not defined. Letter indicates one of Camondo family's houses in Pera Constantinople. 265x21 cm. Completely in French. 14 lines. On a paper watermarked "William Brown & Co. London". William Brown and Co. were located in London in this 'St. Mary Axe and 40 to 41 Old Broad Street London E.C.' address according to Grace's guide to British industrial industry; they worked on 'Lithographic and Letterpress Printers'. 1887 Registered as a Limited Company. Count Mo�se de Camondo 1860-1935 was an Ottoman Empire-born French banker and art collector. He was a member of the prominent Camondo family. As a child Camondo moved with his family from their home in Constantinople Ottoman Empire to Paris around 1869 where he grew up and continued the career of his father Nissim de Camondo 1830-1889 as a banker. He was born into a Sephardic Jewish family that owned one of the largest banks in the Ottoman Empire established in France since 1869. Starting in 1911 he completely rebuilt the family's Parisian mansion on the Parc Monceau in order to house his collection of 18th-century French furniture and artwork. Working closely with the architect Ren� Sergent he created a palatial home conforming to certain 18th-century traditions even planning the room dimensions to match exactly the objects in his collection. The entryway is inspired by the Petit Trianon of Versailles. The home includes a kosher kitchen with separate sections for meat and dairy. The dining room includes a beautifully-carved green marble fountain in the shape of a shell with a dolphin spigot for the ritual washing of hands before eating a meal. Some highlights of his collection include a French silver service that had been ordered by Russian Empress Catherine the Great a set of Buffon porcelain with exact reproductions of ornithological drawings from the S�vres manufacturer and perhaps the only existing complete set of Gobelin royal tapestry sketches. He married Ir�ne Cahen d'Anvers daughter of Louis Cahen d'Anvers in 1891. They separated in August 1897 after her affair with de Camondo's stable master Count Charles Sampieri whom she would later marry and divorce. The children Nissim and Beatrice remained with de Camondo. The mansion was completed in 1914 but his son did not reside there very long as he rejoined the French Army to fight in The Great War. It had been de Camondo's great hope that his son whom he adored would take over the family empire. Following Nissim's death in 1917 de Camondo closed all banking activities. He largely withdrew from society and devoted himself primarily to his collection and to hosting dinners for a club of gourmets at regular intervals. Camondo died in 1935 and the museum opened the following year. He donated the home to Paris's Decorative Arts society as a museum Mus�e Nissim de Camondo in honor of the loss of his son Nissim in World War I. In addition to the collection the meticulously-restored service areas elevator and woodwork of the mansion are noteworthy. During the German occupation of France during World War II his daughter B�atrice his son-of-law L�on Reinach and their children Fanny and Bertrand were deported from France and died in the Auschwitz concentration camp. The study of ijazah tradition, its history and its impact is somehow neglected by both Muslim and non-Muslim researchers and scholars alike. This significantly unique tradition of the Muslim educational system has a long history as it emerged and developed parallel to Islamic education itself, and was in practice for more than a millennium. However, after adapting the new educational system during the late 19th century and throughout 20th century until the present, the tradition of granting ijazah drastically began to decline and to extent became a part of history as it was practised among countable scholars, who express their will to keep this distinctive Muslim tradition alive. During the 3rd century of Hijrah/9th century of C.E., this tradition had a strong impact to the higher learning institutions of Europe, where it is believed that granting diploma/license was the product of the Muslim tradition ofijazah, but in terms of the form and content the former differed completely from the latter. Besides the central regions of the Muslim world, the ijazah system appeared and practised extensively in the periphery, where this can be clearly seen in the regions of Southeast Asia and Southeast Europe. Though modern-day diploma replaced ijazah, this practice is still alive in certain parts of these regions; however, it is not recognised "officially" by the government higher learning institutions. Up to this moment, this research managed to interview and discuss with number of 'ulama who have been granted ijazah from their preceding scholars from various countries of the Balkans.

Coining the phrase 'bazaar painters' in a 1985 article, Metin And enriched our art history terminology with a new concept as well as offer a glimpse into the world of these artists: how they worked, what they drew, where their works are today and how they contribute to our study of history of art and culture. He continued to promote and popularise their work through books and articles published until 2007, at times repeating earlier content as required. Bazaar painters and their work were not initially identified as a distinctive genre; Franz Taeschner, the first researcher to publish a selection, felt no need to refer to them as anything other than 'miniatures'. Challenging this trend, Metin And set about the immensely difficult task of obtaining pictures of bazaar painting albums from four corners of the globe in order to illustrate a prolific series of essays and books.The second volume of Ottoman Figurative Arts, Bazaar Painters consists of twelve articles published between 1985 and 2007, a comprehensive introduction by Tülün Degirmenci, and a concise album. The pictures and inscriptions Metin And chased enthusiastically all his life are but the echoing footsteps of a book, one that was either never written, or somehow got lost before it could be published.

Les Turqueries ou autrement dit le thème turc a joué un grand rôle dans la littérature et les arts (la peinture, la musique, le ballet, les objets décoratifs etc...) en France. Si les croisades ont mis en contact l'Orient musulman et l'Occident chrétien, la prise de Constantinople et la montée en puissance de l'Empire ottoman ont fait des Turcs ottomans le principal représentant de l'Orient en Occident. Pour les écrivains français le thème turc représentait l'altérité par excellence. Peu importait la véracité de l'image, la fiction française s'était emparée du Turc. Georges de Scudéry relate l'histoire du célèbre Ibrahim, vizir du sultan Soliman le magnifique dans Ibrahim ou l'illustre Bassa. Le grand Racine, si respectueux des règles classiques, ose contourner la tradition des sujets antiques en prétendant que "l'éloignement des pays répare en quelque sorte la trop grande proximité des temps" et crée sa tragédie intitulée Bajazet d'après le prince ottoman du même nom. A ne pas confondre avec le héros de l'opéra de Vivaldi, un autre Bajazet, le sultan vaincu par Tamerlan. Bien avant Molière, Rotrou fait parler ses personnages en turc dans sa pièce intitulée La Sour. Molière reprendra ce procédé avec le succès que l'on connaît dans Le Bourgeois gentilhomme qui est la turquerie par excellence du 17ème siècle et qui combine non seulement des personnages turcs mais aussi la musique de Lully directement inspirée des sonorités turques, sans parler des costumes et des pas de danse à la turque. Ainsi, la mode est lancée par Molière pour se moquer des Turcs. D'autre part, grâce à la Bibliothèque orientale d'Herbelot l'érudition passe également par les Turqueries. Au 18ème siècle le thème turc se mêle de critique et de philosophie. Voltaire rapporte les paroles du vieux Turc d'Istanbul, il faut cultiver son jardin, sans cesser de condamner le fanatisme musulman. Les Turqueries se mêlent également de littérature licencieuse voire érotique. Au 19ème siècle les Turqueries se fondent dans l'Orientalisme et prennent des accents politiques. Peut-on dire que de nos jours la tradition des Turqueries continue, après avoir subi certes une certaine transformation ? Peut-on considérer La Pasión turca d'Antonio Gala ou Le Turquetto de Metin Arditi comme des turqueries contemporaines ?
