1859. Very Good. #1: The people appointed by the Juniata Co. Court of Quarter Sessions in Sept. 1858 to lay out a road in Delaware Township report on 11 Feb. 1859 that they have laid out a road from McAllisterville to John Landis' saw mill then through lands of John Branthoffer to the public road that runs from East Salem to Liverpool. The court approved it on 13 March 1860. #2: The people appointed by the Juniata Co. Court of Quarter Sessions in April 1859 to lay out a road from Crossroad Schoolhouse to Salem and to Goodville report on 10 Dec. 1859 that they have laid out the road which runs along lands of the heirs of John Branthoffer who had died on 28 March 1859. The court approved it on 3 April 1860. #3: Inhabitants of Delaware Township petitioned to have a road changed that ran from East Salem via Rapp's saw mill laying a new road and vacating part of the old road. The court approved the change. Each document includes a drawing of the properties and roads in question. Each is on an official Juniata County court form and bears the embossed stamp of the county. Lansdowne PA: King's Daughters of Lansdowne 1935. Very Good . The 3 programs each consist of 1 sheet folded 13.5 x 8.5 cm. printed in black. The musical and tea took place in March of the respective year in 1935 at the Baptist Social Hall in Lansdowne and in 1936 and 1937 at the Twentieth Century Club in Lansdowne. The performers included: Dorothy Johnstone Baseler 1880-1964 harpist for the Philadelphia Orchestra in the early 20th century who recorded with Columbia in 1911 and taught at the Curtis Institute of Music; actress and singer Marjorie Maxwell who did a dramatic reading; and luthier Thomas Elmer playing the cello with the Newton Coal Trio. The members of the Willing Workers' circle are listed inside in the first 2 programs and on the back of the 1937 program. Former owner's name written inside: "Frances D. Swaim." The 1935 program is in Very Good- Condition: lightly soiled; lower corner creased; back is scraped. The 1936 and 1937 programs are in Fine Condition: clean and bright. 5 letters 1873-1879 to William Ward 1837-1895 re: Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad
1873. Near Fine. 5 handwritten letters to William Ward 1873-1879 regarding the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad which existed from 1872 to 1885; it was succeeded by the Philadelphia Midland Railroad. William Ward was one of the organizers of the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad and in 1874 was the president and treasurer pro tem. Letters #1 and #2 Sept. 5 and Dec. 5 1873 are from Jos. H. McKeehan an attorney in Philadelphia who is writing about deliquent subscribers to the railroad. Letter #3 Dec. 18 1873 is from the Village Record a newspaper in West Chester Pa. with a copy of the advertisement that ran in the paper listing the dates that instalments from railroad subscribers were due in 1872. Letter #4 Nov. 26 1875 is from John Smith of Ridley Park about a plan to petition to vacate a street and public ground adjoining Mr. Bartol's purchase. Letter #5 Sept. 8 1879 from the superintendant of the Government Paper Mill in Dalton Mass. complaining about the appointment of counters and watchmen at the mill presumably to Ward as a congressman. William Ward 1837-1895 studied law and was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1859. He opened a practice in Chester; was involved in real estate and banking; served as a member of the Chester city council and as city solicitor; and was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Delaware County in the 45th 46th and 47th Congresses 1877-1883.
