Dawson Henry B. And William J. David
Reminiscences of the City of New York
New York 1855. "The within pages originally written for Valentine's Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York" have been brought together and fifty copies printed for the use of friends of the writers.". This is what is written on the back of the title page. This is copy numbered 10. The unique aspect of this book is that one of the authors Henry B. Dawson signed that page and numbered the edition - plus on the facing page he wrote "The New Jersey Historical Society with the respects of Henry B. Dawson" - in beautiful 19th century script. Dawson was according to my research on the internet an immigrant from England who fell in love with american histroy. He became a newspaper editor and journalist but was known in the end as an historian. He wrote Battles of the United States by Sea and Land and an edition of the Federalist creating a controversy with James A. Hamilton and John Jay. He went against the romantic notion of history and crusaded for the truth. A park in the bronx New York was named after him along with a street. Dawson Park is bordered by Dawson Street. The book as noted is a collection of articles from the Valentine Manuals. This book was rebound with new boards and has a leather spine with the title embossed and the name Dawson in raised leather. The binding is in as new condition. the interior articles this book has no illustrations or plates are in fine condition - the title page has a tear at the bottom spine but is not detached. This book has a deaccessioned stamp from the New Jersey Historical society along with embossed stamp and a black New Jersey Historical Society stamp on the back page. Signed by Author. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. Ex-Library. Hardcover

DE LA VEGA GARCILASO; VARNER JOHN GRIER & VARNER JEANETTE JOHNSON TRANSLATED & EDITED BY
The Florida Of The Inca
University of Texas Press Austin: 1951. Softcover. Brand new book. Perhaps the most amazing thing of all about Garcilaso de la Vega's epic account of the De Soto expedition is the fact that although it is easily the first great classic of American history it had never before received a complete or otherwise adequate English translation in the 346 years which have elapsed since its publication in Spanish. Now the Inca's thrilling narrative comes into its own in the English speaking world. Hernando de Soto's expedition for the conquest of North America was the most ambitious ever to brave the perils of the New World. Garcilaso tells in remarkably rich detail of the conquistadors' wanderings over half a continent of the unbelievable vicissitudes which beset them of the Indians whom they sought to win for King and Church and by whose hands most of them died of De Soto's death and of the final pitiful failure of the expedition. Includes an Index. "When you regretfully lay aside this extraordinary volume and add it to your shelf of favorite titles you will appreciate the tremendous adventure into history which you have had." San Francisco Examiner "Great endurances and deeds were surviving treasures for the soul that marched with DeSoto and this book is their richest storehouse." Paul Horgan New York Times Book Review "A distinguished and beautiful book greatly translated" New York Herald Tribune "A thrilling enriching book masterfully handled." New York Mirror "A superb edition . A beautiful book" San Francisco Chronicle "A rich and happy blend of entertainment and education" Little Rock Gazette "A volume that . catches the flavor of the period" Washington Post University of Texas Press, Austin: 1951 paperback
