Clean square tight and unmarked. Inner hinges are perfectly sound. Gilt lettering on the spine and front cover is still bright and shiny as new. The author Owen McMahon Johnson 1878-1952 was born in New York City. He attended the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey and then Yale University. Originally published in 1910 THE VARMINT is one in a series of Johnson's semi-autobiographical novels about academic life. As usual the principal character is Dink Stover. THE VARMINT includes stories about football and baseball at a prep school in Lawrenceville New Jersey. See McCue p. 58. Dubbed the "De Luxe Autographed Edition" on the title page this copy appears to never have had a signed limitation page. This 1930 printing features 15 original photographs and 6 drawings by F. R. Gruger. At the end of the volume is a KEY TO CHARACTERS that names Johnson's real life schoolmates who inspired them. The book's photos show Johnson's schoolmates as they were in 1895 and again 35 years later. Among other novels in the Dink Stover series are THE ETERNAL BOY 1909; STOVER AT YALE 1911; and THE TENNESSEE SHAD 1911. . Limited Autograph Edition but unsigned. Hardcover.
