Letter from Anthony Kelly Jr. Philadelphia to David Townsend cashier of the Chester County Bank West Chester Pa. 1843
1843. Very Good -. 1 handwritten letter dated Aug. 30 1843 from from Anthony Kelly Jr. in Philadelphia to David Townsend cashier of the Chester County Bank West Chester Pa. Red Philadelphia post mark and remains of red wax seal. Kelly may not have been a Philadelphia resident as he does not appear in the city directories of the period. He requests the balance due him from a note that had been in the hands of William Williamson for collection to be sent to him at 19 St. James St. Philadelphia. David Townsend 1787-1858 cashier of the Chester County Bank for many years was described as the "botanical and banking colleague" of Dr. William Darlington 1782-1863 president of the bank and a well-known botanist by Wm. Arnold Broomfield in his account of his tour of the United States in 1846 and 1847. The genus Townsendia small ground-hugging flowering members of the Asteraceae Family was named for Townsend by the British botanist William Jackson Hooker in his 1833 volume of Flora Boreali-Americana. Townsend also served as county commissioner and helped to found the Chester County Cabinet of Natural Science which became West Chester University. In Very Good- Condition: browning and creasing; lacking one corner without loss of writing; slightly soiled on exterior address side; otherwise clean and solid.

unknown
