40th Infantry Division, Pacific Theatre
40th US Infantry Division's Photo Album Depicting their Grisly Campaign Against the Japanese Through the Philippines and New Guinea
The 40th Infantry Division Overseas photo album depicting their brutal hard-fought slog in the Pacific Theater during World War II with campaigns in New Guinea New Britain and the Philippines. An extraordinary photo album consisting of 200 original black-and-white photographs with each photograph sequentially numbered in white ink at the bottom right corner corresponding to a brief description in the index.
The album opens with a powerful image of uniformed female Red Cross workers wearing turbans as they disembark en masse from a landing craft met by shirtless GIs a rare visual testimony to the critical but underrepresented role of American women in rear-echelon and medical support roles during the Pacific campaigns Photo 127. Subsequent photos reveal amphibious landings and beachhead operations Photos 129 131 an aerial view of a ruined church and town in Luzon Photo 132 and dramatic images of warfare—from tank and artillery operations Photo 147 to men firing mounted machine guns over jungle valleys Photo 148.

This album does not shy away from the brutal nature of the Pacific theater. Images 152 through 154 depict the bodies of slain Japanese soldiers some in grotesquely contorted postures underscoring the ferocity of jungle fighting and the deep animosities that characterized this theater. Photo 161 is a rare and important printed map showing Japanese tunnel and cave fortifications in the Zambales Mountains a key detail for understanding the terrain and enemy tactics faced by the 40th. Combat engineering and logistics are well represented including scenes of ship unloading Photos 166-167 a Filipino guerrilla parade through an urban street Photos 174-175 and the massing of Filipino porters and local civilians who supported the campaign Photos 179-180 189.

Weaponry and vehicles are heavily featured. Multiple photos show M4 Sherman tanks howitzers in action Photos 190 244 and soldiers operating field artillery and mortars. The terrain from steep hill combat Photos 147 148 150 to devastated towns Photo 135 contextualizes the military strategy and hardships endured. Crucially the album includes a photograph of African American soldiers with scout dogs in the jungle Photo 142 a potent reminder of the segregated but active service roles played by Black troops. A particularly sobering photo 172 captures a Japanese proclamation threatening death to civilians caught aiding the resistance—a stark witness to the occupation's psychological warfare.

The album ends with a compelling mix of camaraderie and daily life including mess tents tent cities amid palms Photos 212 interactions with indigenous peoples Photo 222 and recovered POWs Photo 237. These images humanize the soldiers while providing a comprehensive visual narrative of the 40th Division's Pacific service. Well-preserved and historically significant this album is a vital resource for scholars of World War II Pacific combat and the racial gendered and geopolitical complexities of the U.S. war effort. Very good condition overall. unknown

[Alaska, British Columbia, Washington State - Pacific Northwest Fishing Industry - Salmon] Deming & Gould Company
Canneries That Produce Deming & Gould Company’s Salmon
Chicago: Poole Brothers 1917. Folding map measuring 38 ½ x 26 ¾ inches. Tape repairs to verso some tears at folds and edges still bring and attractive good to very good overall with excellent restoration potential. A map of the canneries in Alaska British Columbia and Washington operated by the Deming and Gould Company who were influential in the growth of the Alaskan salmon trade. The map’s date of printing 1917 suggests that perhaps it was related to the war effort as salmon demand increased during this period. The Demings based in Chicago were influential in the growth of the salmon trade in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest founding Pacific American Fisheries Inc. in 1899 and continuing in various iterations until their sale of the firm in 1934 due to president E.B. Deming’s ailing health. The map shows seventeen different canneries several on the Alaska peninsula and the one in Bellingham. We find no record of this imprint only a later and small version held at the University of Washington. Poole Brothers unknown

Founded originally in 1910 in the City of Portland by David Shope 1862-1948 having developed his specialized brick-making machinery for clay & concrete bricks as featured in the final photograph the company’s products quickly proved popular with Arts & Crafts architects in the Pacific Northwest. Shope used a patented process to achieve what he termed the “Red Wire Cut†and “Old Gold Rough Texture†for commercial facades and also used concrete cast stone to achieve special effects and sold his licensed machinery to contractors as well. By 1922 he heavily marketed the fact that the Shope facades were the only ones to mostly survive the 1922 Astoria fire. He also aggressively protected his patents suing competitors on a regular basis. After 1923 he sold out to the Eugene Concrete Pipe Company and returned to Lake City MN where he lived with his daughter Birdie. Gensler 1873-1968 was a German-American photographer in San Francisco CA who operated Columbia Commercial Studio from about 1915 through World War II before moving back to Alameda CA and in two of the photos he has proudly displayed his 1915 Harley-Davidson V-Twin motorcycle in the foreground. We could find no similar album or collection of photographs in any holdings for the Shope Brick Co. Shope Brick Co., [Columbia Commercial Studio, 167 Fourth Ave.], unknown

We Demand the Hotel Back. Fight for the I-Hotel. Demandamos que nos Regresan El Hotel! Lucha Por El Hotel Internacional. Demonstration/Awareness Flier. Monday Aug 15 3:30 pm
San Francisco: International Hotel Support Committee Publisher. Unbound. Good. no date presumed late 1970s. Single sheet legal sized light pink paper. Printed on both sides with bilingual text: Spanish on one side English on the other. A flier for a demonstration to stop evictions at the International Hotel in San Francisco. Given that the last tenants were evicted in August 1977 it appears this demonstration may have been a last ditch effort. The flier describes public support for the cause and gives a list of four demands The International Hotel was a hotel located in the Manilatown section of San Francisco and provided low income housing to mostly elderly Filipino residents. Beginning in the late 1960s developers sought to evict its residents in order to build a parking garage. Students residents and city activists organized and protested for years against the eviction efforts including poet Al Robles. GOOD condition. The English side has a strip of white paper glued along the top edge obscuring some of the large captions. The paper bears a partial handwritten note that doesn't appear related to the flier. Minor wrinkling/creasing. International Hotel Support Committee, Publisher unknown

The photomobile tourist. Oregon Washington Idaho. The road ahead.
Seattle WA: The Photomobile Tourist Co. Inc. 1919. Tall 8vo. 416 pp. Numerous maps illusts. text photos over 2000 individual photo images. Limp black pebbled cloth embossed lettering in blind on front cover & spine yapp edges minor edgewear rubbing very minor tidemark to upper corner front pastedown light toning to endpapers slightly shaken still VG copy. First edition of this scarce guidebook for car travel in the Pacific Northwest modeled on the popular Photo-Auto Guides which Rand McNally had purchased the sole publishing rights in 1910 from Gardner S. Chapin. This guide is of particular interest and value for not only including the strip maps within the text and excellent index but also the extensive photos and tourist information for the locales the early motorist would visit. Unlike the Rand McNally photo guides these photos are arranged like movie film strips with mile markers clearly noted at the right hand margins keyed to the integral strip maps with each section. These offer an invaluable contemporary record of all the crossroads garages hotels parking areas towns and cities that an early traveler would have seen as he drove across the Oregon Washington and Idaho. The photos often include images of contemporary automobiles traveling on the roads parked as well as specific road conditions noting whether the highways and streets are paved concrete cobblestone or gravel. The Photomobile Tourist Company has included photos and instructions for visiting Yellowstone The Columbia River Highway reproduces the Kennedy Co. Birdseye view of Seattle routes to Victoria & Vancouver B.C. Portland to northern California through Grant’s Pass Medford and Ashland. The ads for restaurants garages repair shops automobile dealers hotels tourist spots and more are often nicely illustrated. Also issued simultaneously in red diced cloth with no printing priority.
