‎Tokyo circa 1920-30's. A REPRINT OF THE MID-19TH CENTURY FAMOUS SERIES . .TOKAIDO GOJU SAN TSUGI: THE 53 STAGES OF THE TOKAIDO HIGHWA . . PRINT NUMBER 1 THE START OF THE HIGHWAY . . AT NIHON BASHI OLD EDO TOKYO . . A COLOR WOODBLOCK PRINT This is a very good color woodblock reprint of the original series. Colors are in pastels nicely executed with scene title and the artist's signature and red cinnabar Hanko in the lower right corner. . The lively scene is the first stage on the famous THE FIFTY-THREE STAGES OF THE TOKAIDO HIGHWAY the Nihon Bashi bridge. . It shows a large group of all manner of people animals coolies. pilgrims merchants haulers beggars children women and the devout people either coming or going on the Tokaido Eastern Highway. A Lord's procession is just visible at the top of the bride with two large Pompom bearers at the very top. . The busy scene is typical of the Edo period when "Shanks Mare" was the usual method of travel for commoners. . This was one of Hiroshige's most famous series consisting of 55 prints in all covering the 53 stations of the highway. Each day's walk ended at a new 'station' where people rested overnight then proceeded the next day. Usually it took a person 53 days to walk from Edo to Kyoto. . CONDITION: The work is with excellent registry and impression. There is some of the usual minor rubbing to the front and back sides. There is a mend in the upper right corner margin this does not affect the print whatsoever and can be matted out easily. . Otherwise the print is firm and solid ready for matting and display. . ‎OHASHI ATAKE NO YUHDACHI: SUDDEN SHOWER AT ATAKE BRIDGE. From the Series: MEISH‎

‎Tokyo ca. 1920's Watanabe. An Oban color woodblock print vertical format sheet size: 24.6 x 38 cm. print size is: 21.6 x 35.7 cm.excellent example no issuessigned in block red Hanko chop/seal reprint of the 1857 First Edition. . . ONE OF HIROSHIGE'S MOST FAMOUS & LANDMARK ACHEIVEMENTS . . THE "FINAL MONMUMENT" TO HIROSHIGE'S GREAT CAREER . . SUPERB EXAMPLE AND SUBJECT: This print is one of the most desirable of all Hiroshige's production of prints. Coveted by collectors for about 150 years this work commands world interest and the highest of prices regardless where and when it appears. . HIROSHIGE'S BEST COMPOSITION: This superb composition is in Lane's words: "Plebian citizens of Edo caught on the Great Bridge across the Sumida River at Take shielded themselves from a sudden shower. On the river a logger poles his raft and in the distance dimly the houses and temples of Fukagawa and Honjo can be seen." Lane continues: "Hiroshige's "Ohashi" stands as the final monument of his career and was produced only a year before his death." See Lane below. . The cartouche at the upper right reads: "ATAKE NO YUDACHI: SUDDEN SHOWER AT ATAKE." The work also has the censor's or Kiwame seal at the top right margin indicated a date of October 1857. . THE ARTIST: ANDO HIROSHIGE I 1797-1858: Was the last major master of the Ukiyo-e School. In 1811 he studied with Ukiyo-e master Utagawa Toyohiro from whom he received his "nom d'artiste" Hiroshige. His first published illustrated book was from 1818 during the following decades he published profusely. From 1831 he was greatly influenced by Hokusai and began his series of landscape prints. . WATANABE SHOZABURO REPRINT EDITION: . This is a Watanabe reprint of Hiroshige's most famous color woodblock color print. This is a circa 1920 excellent example and color woodcut print faithful to the original exact in all details. It is an exact match for the print cited in Lane page 183 no.187 and also in the Watanabe 1936 catalog. Although Watanabe did not mark stamp or otherwise earmark the great master's Sui Generis the paper and printing is unmistakable the product of Watanabe in the 1920's-30's. . WHO WAS PUBLISHER WATANABE SHOZABURO 1885-1962: . Watanabe Shozaburo was a known maker of this kind of fine reprint work. It is number 346 on pl. 62 of his catalog. As usual there are no Watanabe publisher's seal or indication whatsoever on the print. Due to the nature of the 'laid' paper it is commensurate with his high-quality color woodblock reprinted works. Because it was in the 1936 catalog is not an indication of date. Watanabe had been making high quality reprints of famous masters' prints from 1915. See Watanabe below. . Watanabe was a Japanese print woodblock publisher and the driving force behind the Japanese printmaking movement known as "Shin-hanga" New prints" movement. Watanabe employed highly skilled carvers and printers and commissioned artists to design prints that combined traditional Japanese techniques with elements of contemporary Western painting such as perspective and shadows. Watanabe coined the term Shin-hanga in 1915 to describe such prints. Charles W. Bartlett Hashiguchi Goyo Kawase Hasui Yoshida Hiroshi Kasamatsu Shiro Torii Kotondo Ohara Koson Terashima Shimei Ito Shinsui Takahashi Shotei and Yamakawa Shuho are among the artists whose works he published. . Much of his company's stockpile of both prints and their original printing-blocks was destroyed in the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923. In the following years new versions of many of these prints were created using re-carved blocks typically the re-issued "post-quake" prints included changes and revisions in the designs. The quality was always fist class using highest quality materials and craftsmen. . Watanabe exported most of his Shin-hanga prints to the United States and Europe due to a lack of Japanese interest. . CONDITION: This work is in excellent condition strong color perfect registry no fading clean and solid as issued. . BIBLIOGRAPHY: LANE Richard.: IMAGES FROM THE FLOATING WORLD: THE JAPANESE PRINT INCLUDING AN ILLUSTRATED DICTIONARY OF UKIYO-E p.183 illustration 183 shows this exact print. ‎The Sixty-nine Stations Of The Kisokaido‎

‎George Braziller New York: 2008. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Reproduced from the finest surviving edition of a rare manuscript The Sixty-Nine Stations of the Kisokaido brings Hiroshige and Eisen's portrait of daily life in 19th century Japan to Western audiences for the first time. Each of the seventy-one images teems with unique characters from beggars and brawling men to boaters and finely clothed women. Behind these travelers loom castles cities powerful waterfalls and many other sites familiar to lovers of Japanese history. Comments by Sebastian Izzard Ph.D. accompany each image not only providing insight into their subject matter but also discussing their survival during the dramatic social shifts and economic hardship of Hiroshige and Eisen's time. This book tells the story of a landmark two immortal artists and an enduring masterpiece. 71 full-color images. "This new book on the Kisokaido is a welcome addition to our knowledge and appreciation not only of Japanese art of which these prints are splendid examples but of Japanese culture itself since we see so many manifestations of traditional Japan so beautifully rendered and reproduced here." - Stephen Addiss University of Richmond author of Japanese Ghosts and Demons and Mountains of the Heart ISBN: 0807615935. ‎UKIYO GAFU: Sketch Book of the Fleeting World. Alternate Titles: UKIYO RYUSAI GA‎

‎Edo c.1830-44 Suwaraya. Stiff orange stitched wrs. covers worn thumbed 29 double folded leaves 58pages profusely illustrated in 3 colors Sumi black & pale pink vol. 3 only of a 3 volume set 16 x 23 cm. FIRST EDITION Delightfully interesting subjects portrayed with a strong pen. Sketches of human figures landscapes flowers birds insects animals of all varieties done in light tints. The work is reminiscent of Hokusai's most celebrated book series THE MANGA. THE ARTISTS: Executed in a collaborative effort by two famous artists: Hiroshige I Ichiryusai 1797-1858 aka Ando and Keisai Eisen Yoshinobu 1790-1848. Working in concert they produced a lovely set of books with superbly charming and quaint illustrations. A fine example of the best of Japan's great master artists. SUBJECT OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS: The work reflects all genres and subjects of life work and leisure in Japan during the mid-1800's. Its a virtual dictionary of human and animal activity. This encyclopedic work gives us an insight to what most Japanese saw and were familiar with during their life-time. Illustrated in shades of Sumi gray black and pastel orange. PUBLISHERS PLACES & DATES: Not all volumes state the publisher per Kerlin a 'second copy' was published in Nagoya by Eirakuya and was a Meiji period reprint. One can conclude that Kerlin's observations were limited to those he found in the Netherlands which was void of a matching set published in Edo by Suwaraya. Inside covers show adverts for Hokusai books inside back cover shows adverts for various Edo Osaka publishers and adverts for Keisai books. The place of publication is not cited nor are any dates therefore we support the dates found in Kerlin on p. 756 and other references cited below to be ca. 1830-1844. NOTE ON CONDITION: The "very clean set" has a large amount silver transfer on the back of vol. 3 covers and a very minor amount of the same on the back of vol. 1; the contents of vol. 1 & 2 remain exceptionally bright and clean else "as is." BIBLIOGRAPHY: H. Kerlen: CATALOGUE OF PRE-MEIJI JAPANESE BOOKS AND MAPS IN PUBLIC COLLECTIONS IN THE NETHERLANDS pp.756-757 no. 1800. He cites publication dates for the various volume numbers from ca. 1830-1844. He gives good bibliographical details for each of the 3 volumes in the series. L. Brown: BLOCK PRNTING AND BOOK ILLUSTRATION IN JAPAN: p.194 and gives ca. 1836 as the approximate publication date. See Kerlin for better dates. H. Bartlett & H. The entry on p.300 matches what we believe is the correct author & title but lacks any information regarding the co-illustrator Keisen Eisen and seems to be confused with a work of similar title on p. 303 KEISAI UKIYO GWAFU which was a variant of volume one of the series we catalogue here. Again see Kerlin 1800 for clarity. Toda seems to think that this was a 10 volume set lacking from 2-9 when in fact it was a 3 volume set per our description. J. Gyer. comp. See item 666 cited as 3 volumes "originally published ca. 1836.this set is probably a second edition. Nagoya n.d." He cites the authors as being Hiroshige Ryusai & Keisai Eisen. L. Dawes: CATALOGUE OF JAPANESE ILLUSTRATED BOOKS .V & A Museum HSMO 1972. Page 178 KEISAI UKIYO GWAFU "In collaboration with Hiroshige note variant title again he repeats Toda's error in assuming correctness as a 10 vol. set again he only has volume 1 ! E14832-1886. Also see p.179 and makes the same error assuming its a 10 vol. set having volumes 1-3 E.6944-1916 but does acknowledge that it was "with Keisai Yeisen ". S. Sorimachi: CATALOGUE OF JAPANESE ILLUSTRATED BOOKS AND MANUSCRIPTS IN THE SPENCER COLLECTION OF THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY: p. 128 no. 561. Per Sorimachi "vol.1 & 2 was illustrated by Eisen Keisai and the third by Hiroshige. " Forrer: 244-246 KSM kaiga 1-356-4 Kraft: vol.1: no. 26; vol.2: no. 543; vol.3: no. 763. . unknown‎
