‎Down the Emperor's Road with Hiroshige AS NEW‎

‎Tokyo & Rutland Vermont: Charles E. Tuttle & Company 1973. Fifth Impression. Hardcover. In exceptionally good condition. Duodecimo 4 by 6 inches full pictorial covers sewn in the Japanese fashion with slipcase pp. 72. Fully illustrated with b-w halftones as well as colour plates. . The T kaid road which roughly means "eastern sea route" was the most important of the Five Routes of the Edo period in Japan connecting Kyoto to Edo. Unlike the inland and less heavily travelled Nakasend the T kaid travelled along the sea coast of eastern Honsh hence the route's name. The artist Hiroshige depicted each of the 53 Stations of the T kaid shukuba in his work The Fifty-three Stations of the T kaid and the haiku poet Matsuo Bash travelled along the road. The T kaid goj san tsui Fifty-Three Pairings along the T kaid Road created in 1845 is one of the most well-known and fascinating examples of woodblock prints inspired by the road. Japan's three leading print designers of the nineteenth century - Kuniyoshi Hiroshige and Kunisada - paired each T kaid rest station with an intriguing cryptic design. <br/><br/> Charles E. ‎Bird's-eye view of Komagata Temple & Azuma Bridge???????? 100 famous Views of Edo ????????‎

34 cm x 23 cm. Le passe-partout mesure 49 cm x 34 cm.‎

‎A beautiful woodblock print reproducing one of Hiroshige's famous illustrations from the collection "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo." This print shows Komagata-do Temple and Azuma Bridge. Originally published by Uoei, 1857, this reproduction is by Yuyudo. Although undated, it is likely from the 1930's. Although a reproduction, it is a genuine woodblock copy (not a modern digital or lithographic print). In excellent clean condition, it is loosely tipped into a card folder / passe partout, but can be removed for framing. Komagata-do Temple is located in the triangular plot of land near Komagata Bridge in Kaminarimon 2-chome, Taito Ward. Originally, it was a storehouse-style temple located on the riverbank in Komagata 1-chome, enshrining a Bato Kannon (Horse-Headed Kannon). Edoites pronounce Komagata-do Temple as "Komando." The illustration, perhaps inspired by the famous poem by the geisha Takao, "You are now near Komagata, singing the cuckoo," depicts a cuckoo flying in the sky. The print of the rainy May sky is magnificent, showcasing the skill of the printer. The picture shows Azuma Bridge from the roof of Komagata-do Temple, depicting houses on the Honjo riverbank on the other side. The white wall belongs to the lower residence of Hosokawa Notonokami. A red flag is visible in the foreground. This is the signboard flag of a general store called "Hyakusuke" located across the street from Komagata-do, which sold rouge and face powder. It was designed to be visible from a distance, featuring the rouge they sold. It was a very eye-catching signboard at the time. 34cm x 23cm. Passe partout is 49cm x 34cm. .‎

‎HIROSHIGE, Utagawa.‎

‎Summer Moon at Ryogoku Bridge ????‎

‎A beautiful woodblock print reproducing one of Hiroshige's famous illustrations. Although undated, it is likely from the 1930's. Although a reproduction, it is a genuine woodblock copy (not a modern digital or lithographic print). In excellent clean condition, it is loosely tipped onto a card backing sheet and has a stiff car folder with it. A humorous poem by Hachijintei written at the top of this painting. Shortly after completing "The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido," Hiroshige published "Famous Places of Edo in the Four Seasons," a set of four prints: "Moon over Ryogoku," "Snow over the Sumida River," "Flowers over Gotenyama," and "Red Maple Trees at Kaimoji Temple." Each of these works skillfully combines composition and color in a long-haired style, and despite being small pieces from Hiroshige's prime, they are considered one of his masterpiece series. There are no publisher details to the work. Overall in excellent condition, with just a touch of staining from the original process to the right hand edge. Print is 44.5cm x 15.5cm. backing card and folder are 44.5cm x 31cm. .‎
