‎Lord Auckland Governor-General of India. Autograph Letter Signed ‘Auckland’ to ‘FitzGerald’ William Vesey-FitzGerald 2nd Baron FitzGerald and Vesey rejoicing in the ‘mark of favor and distinction’ he has obtained for Captain Macgregor.‎

‎6 October 1822; Kensington Gore London. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. In good condition lightly aged on the first leaf of a bifolium the blank second of which carries traces of mount. Folded twice. Begins: ‘My dear FitzGerald / I thank you very much for your obliging note - and I rejoice greatly that you have obtained for Capt Macgregor this mark of favor and distinction. India has no better soldier nor has any political agent placed in trying circumstances shewn a better nerve or a sounder discretion’. FitzGerald’s ‘just notice of him’ will be ‘well appreciated’ by others. He ends by stating his understanding that ‘Macgregor had been at least a brevet Captain in the Indian Army’. There were numerous Macgregors serving in the Indian Army and it is unclear which is referred to here. 6 October 1822; Kensington Gore [London]. unknown‎

‎'F. O. Foreign Office Whitehall Nov 11. 41 1841'. Showing signs of the early stirrings of the Great Game. See Canning's entry and that of Fitzgerald in the Oxford DNB. At the time of the letter Canning was serving in his first governmental appointment as Under-Secretary to Lord Aberdeen in the Foreign Office in Peel’s administration while Fitzgerald was President of the Board of Control. ‎Lord Curzon George Nathaniel Curzon 1st Marquis Curzon of Kedleston Conservative statesman and Viceroy of India. Autograph Letter Signed to Mr Campbell declining an invitation as he will not be taking 'any part in public affairs' that summer‎

‎Undated but after 1895 and probably written early in 1922. On letterhead of The Priory Reigate. See his long and sympathetic entry by David Gilmour in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Curzon acquired the Priory at Reigate after his marriage in 1895 and the letter probably dates from around March to July 1922 when according to the Oxford DNB ‘he was laid low by a combination of phlebitis thrombosis and lymphangitis which kept him out of action for five months’. 4pp 12mo. On bifolium. Written in pencil. In fair condition lightly aged and worn with slight spotting at foot of first page. One central fold for postage. Addressed to ‘Dear Sir’ though the recpient is clearly the husband of the ‘Mrs. Campbell’ referred to at the end of the letter and with large bold signature at bottom right of final page. The letter begins: ‘Dear Sir / Had you given me earlier intimation I would have spared you the trouble of calling. I regret to say that I am ill in bed and unable to see any visitors. Moreover in any case it would be impossible for me to accede to your request since I do not wish to attend any meetings or to take any part in public affairs in the forthcoming summer . and have been compelled to refuse many Scores of invitations in consequence.’ He regrets the trouble to which ‘Mrs Campbell’ and the recipient have been put and concludes by thanking ‘your Committees for the honour that they proposed to confer upon me’. Undated, but after 1895, and probably written early in 1922. On letterhead of The Priory, Reigate. unknown‎

‎‘There never was a better father and never one more loved’: Lord Napier while British Ambassador to the Netherlands. Autograph Letter Signed to 'the Honble. George Elliott' praising his father the Second Earl of Minto on his death.‎

‎8 August 1859. The Hague Holland. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition with slight discoloration along central fold. Large bold signature ‘Napier’. Addressed to ‘The Honble. George Elliott’ with salutation to ‘My dear Elliott’. As he does not know where Elliott’s sister Lady Dunfermline is ‘residing at this moment’ he is placing in Elliott’s hands ‘for transmission’ a letter from the wife of the Turkish ambassador at the Hague. He expresses to Elliott’s family his sympathy at the loss of their father. ‘I can never forget the kindness which he shewed me when I was unequally associated with him in his duties in Italy. He continued the same goodness and partiality to me afterwards.’ Added to Napier’s ‘personal attachment’ is ‘the highest appreciation of his manly unaffected sincere character and of his great and useful capacity’. He is sure ‘there never was a better father and never one more loved’. He urges Elliott to consider that his ‘distress must be tempered by the reflection that his disorder was incurable and that his life could only be prolonged amidst suffering and infirmity’. He considers that there is ‘no family more united by affection’ than Elliott’s. He concludes in the hope that they ‘may be preserved to each other and see good days and happy homes and that wherever you go you may be gathered to the banks of the Teviot at last’. 8 August 1859. ‎LOTI Pierre‎

‎L'Inde (sans les Anglais)‎

‎Christian Pirot, 1989, in-8 br. (13,5 x 21), 429 p., coll.
