‎Washington DC: Government printing Office 1873. Hard Cover. Poor/No Jacket. Full title: Ordnance Memoranda No. 15. Report of the Board of Officers … for the Purpose of Selecting a Breech-System for the Muskets and Carbines of the Military Service together with their Report upon the Subject of Trowel-Bayonets: with an appendix prepared by the recorder giving a description of each of the inventions submitted with a classified nomenclature of parts as exhibited in the detailed illustrations accompanying; to which is added the Report of a Board of Ordnance Officers on the Subject of the Proper Caliber for Small-Arms. Original cloth hard cover. 414 pages including index. With many fold out charts drawings and diagrams in the rear as well as several throughout the book. Black and white photos of various guns/rifles and their parts labeled also found throughout the book. An extensive look at various rifles and muskets tested and used by the US army providing the results of their experiments and tests as well as any commentary on the various weapons. Includes information on many gun inventions or innovations.Guns photographed include the Prusian Needle Carbine Ward-Burton Magazine Musket the German Mauser Winchester Magazine Arm Repeater the Russian Berdan various Remington models and many other more obscure names. Bookplate present stating "Compliments of the Chief of Ordnance US Army." Unfortunately the work is in POOR condition with heavy wear. Moderate to heavy fading soiling scuffing and other heavy wear to the covers. This includes a large tear in the cloth at the lower edge with some missing as well as a piece of the board beneath also missing. Minor staining also present to the covers. Interior suffers from moderate to heavy INSECT damage in the gutter of the first few pages as well as the gutters and upper margin of the last few pages and ESPECIALLY the gutters of the fold out diagrams in the rear. This has resulted in severely weakening their integrity to the binding. Due to this the charts have not been collated as to handle them may cause some to detach. It is unsure if all are present all though it appears that they are. Fortunately the text and photo section of the book has mostly escaped insect damage the exception being the text and charts on pages 180 to 246 which suffer HEAVY INSECT damage to the fore edge margins resulting in some loss of text/charts on those pages. The text is otherwise solid with minor general soiling and foxing scattered throughout. Faint dampstaining affecting the first 100 pages in the lower margin. Reading/reference copy useful for the photos and technical specifications given. As is in POOR condition. Government printing Office unknown‎
