DANA Charles Anderson 1819 97
Autograph Letter Signed
American newspaper editor who took part in the famed Brook Farm utopian experiment 1841-46 managed Horace Greeley's "New York Tribune" 1847-62 and owned and edited the "New York Sun" 1868-97. ALS 2pp 5" X 8" New York NY 1868 September 1. Addressed to Mr. Hall. Very good. On "Office of the New-York Sun" letterhead Dana recommends various French dictionaries at length: "The prince of all dictionaries is Littres. I would almost rather have it for general philology than Grimm's German dictionary. It is a little more than half published & will take 18 months to finish. It is to be in four parts to be bound either in 2 or 4 vols. The two anterior parts cost unbound $22.50 & the others will cost as much or $45 for the whole. I get 10 per cent disct on this price. But it is a great book. No other Fr. Dict. approaches it in value. The Dict. de l'academie 3 vols. costs bound $40. The Dict. of Langlais 2 vols small 4to costs $27. The Dict. of Bescherelle 2 vols bound costs $30. These are all first class works. If you want a simple French dictionary of a common sort all in French I can buy you a good enough secondhand one I suppose for $5. But every such scholar as you ought to have Littre." Most interesting -- Dana was clearly quite the lingual connoisseur. unknown

Dana James Jonathan Edwards
The “Examination of the Late Rev’d President Edwards’s Enquiry on Freedom of Will” Continued.
New Haven: Printed for Thomas and Samuel Green 1773. First edition of American Protestant clergyman James Dana's second published response to Jonathan Edwards' Inquiry into the Modern Prevailing Notions of the Freedom of the Will preceded by Dana's prior examination of the same subject published anonymously in 1770. Octavo original three-quarter period calf over marbled boards gilt titles to the spine morocco spine labels raised bands. A rare and desirable example illustrating the tensions that shaped the Evangelical Revival in eighteenth century America. Widely regarded as "one of America's most important and original philosophical theologians" American revivalist preacher Jonathan Edwards' theological work was firmly rooted in Reformed theology. In his major work The Freedom of the Will Edwards argued that although humanity possesses free will they are inherently depraved and bound to sin and therefore require divine guidance and grace. Regarded as inclining to Arminianism fellow Protestant clergyman James Dana first came into conflict with Edwards when he was ordained and and made pastor of Congregational Church in Wallingford Connecticut. Dana published his first Examination of Edwards' The Freedom of the Will anonymously in his continued Examination which revealed him as the author of both works Dana argued against Edwards' "denial of moral rational liberty; his distinction of natural and moral necessity and attributing the origin of evil to the want or withdraw of divine assistance." Printed for Thomas and Samuel Green hardcover books

Previous owner's small name stamp on endpaper. No remainder mark. Pages are fresh and crisp. Illustrated with over 1500 full-color photographs of shells. Glossary. Select bibliography. Index. From the Dust Jacket: "THE COLLECTOR'S ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SHELLS is the first reference work to combine comprehensive worldwide coverage of seashells with color photographs closely integrated in the text. The illustrations are reproduced large enough to show not just the general appearance of the shell but details of surface pattern and texture. The more than 2000 species are arranged in systematic order following an up-to-date classification of mollusks. Within each genus the species are dealt with in alphabetical order. The stunning color photographs -- over 1500 taken especially for this book -- often include more than one specimen so the variation within the species or different aspects of the shell can be seen. A pictorial key is provided to assist the collector in identifying his specimens." Bound in the original black cloth lettered in gold on the spine. . First American Edition. Hard Cover.
