In 1932 Amid The Great Depression And Widespread Disillusionment About Capitalism's Prospects Schuman Had Signed An Open Letter Supporting The League Of Professional Groups For Foster And Ford Candidates Of The Communist Party Of The United States In That Year's Presidential Election. In A 1936 Article Titled "Liberalism And Communism Reconsidered" He Sought To Reconcile Liberal And Marxist Viewpoints Arguing Both Had Common Interests Against Fascism. On The Night Of December 7 1941 Schuman Told An Audience At The Ford Hall Forum "The Nazis Fascists And Japanese Have Made One Tragic Blunder. They Allowed Themselves To Believe That The Work Of Disintegration In America Had Gone Far Enough For Them To Strike. They're Wrong." He Also Said That The United States Should Lead "A New World Order And World Unity." He Urged Recognition Of The Free French And Aid To Governments-In-Exile In Overthrowing Quisling Regimes Leading Toward The Overthrow Of Hitler. He Predicted That Japan Could Fight For Only Three Or Four Months. He Was Attacked By The House Un-American Activities Committee In 1943 As Having A Record Of "Communist Affiliations" And Was Later Assailed By Senator Joseph R. Mccarthy. He Denied The Accusations And Successfully Withstood Efforts By The Committee To Have Him Removed As A Government Analyst Of German Radio Broadcasts A Post That He Held For Several Months In 1942 And 1943 While He Was On Leave From Williams. The Professor Undertook Several-Very Public Political And Social Battles At Williams Including His Much-Publicized Refusal To Attend Ceremonies During A Visit From Lady Bird Johnson Which He Considered To Be The College's Tacit Indication Of Support For The Johnson Administration's Involvement In The Vietnam War. The Term "Geo-Strategy" Was First Used By Schuman In His 1942 Article "Let Us Learn Our Geopolitics." Schuman's Book Soviet Politics At Home And Abroad Was Criticised By Dwight Macdonald As "A Neo-Stalinist Survey." A More Positive Review Stated "To Those Who Do Not Share The Outlook Of A Particular Author His Convictions Are Apt To Appear Biased Or Prejudiced. None The Less He Has Made An Earnest Attempt At A Balanced And Temperate Account Of Soviet Development And Has Achieved A Very Considerable Measure Of Success." Schuman's Russia Since 1917 Which Was In Some Ways An Updated Version Of Soviet Politics At Home And Abroad Was Described By Kirkus Reviews As "A Compendium Elaborately Researched And As Fair-Minded As Anyone Could Reasonably Desire. A Fine Copy Unopened And Unread. Paul Samuel Reinsch 1869 -1923 Was An American Political Scientist And Diplomat. Reinsch Was Born In Milwaukee Wisconsin Of German-American Parents. He Graduated From The University Of Wisconsin In 1892 Attended The School Of Law There And After Graduating In 1894 Was Admitted To The Bar And Practiced Law In Milwaukee. He Returned To The University Of Wisconsin For Additional Schooling In 1895 Earning A Ph.D. In Political Science Under Frederick Jackson Turner In 1898. He Was Employed There As An Assistant Professor Of Political Science. He Became A Full Professor Of Political Science At The University Of Wisconsin In 1901 And Remained In This Position Until 1913. Reinsch Was One Of The Organizers Of The American Political Science Association Serving As Second Vice-President In 1904 And Becoming President In 1920. He Was One Of The First Educators To Offer Courses In World Politics. In 1911 And 1912 He Served As Roosevelt Exchange Professor At The Universities Of Berlin And Leipzig. Reinsch Was Introduced Into The World Of Practical Diplomacy By Serving On The United States Delegations To The Third Pan American Conference At Rio De Janeiro In 1906 The First Pan-American Scientific Conference At Santiago Chile In 1909 And The Fourth Pan-American Conference At Buenos Aires In 1910. This Experience In Addition To His Reputation As A Student Of Far Eastern Affairs Led To His Appointment As Minister To China By President Wilson On August 13 1913. While Minister Reinsch Encouraged Educational Industrial And Commercial Development In China. He Always Remained Sympathetic To The Democratic Movement Despite Civil War Political Intrigues And Two Attempts To Restore The Empire. His Greatest Fault As A Diplomat Was An Inclination To "Make Policy"-- That Is Act Without Concrete Instructions From Washington. The Most Serious Instance Of This Was His Promise To China That If The Chinese Would Enter World War I Against The Central Powers The United States Would Support China's Claim To Sovereignty In Shantung Province. When Because Of Circumstances Of Which Reinsch Had No Knowledge President Wilson Allowed Japanese Sovereignty Over Shantung To Be Written Into The Treaty Of Peace Reinsch Resigned His Position As Minister. After His Resignation In August 1919 He Accepted An Appointment As Legal Counselor To China. In This Capacity He Represented China At The Washington Conference And Continued To Lecture And Write Until His Death On The Evils Of Secret Diplomacy And The Value Of Better Sino-American Relations. Inasmuch As The Cardinal Rule Of Democrats Is To Never Criticize A Fellow Democrat Particularly A President Victorious In War Reinsch And Wilson'S Support Of Japanese Territorial Acquisition In China Is Largely Ignored By Modern Historians Making American Understanding Of Modern Chinese Attitudes Problematic. In 1920 After His Friend Joseph E. Davies Persuaded Him To Run For The Office Reinsch Won The Democratic Party Nomination For Senator From Wisconsin. His Campaign Was Not Very Actively Pursued However And He Was Defeated In The Election By Irvin Lenroot The Republican Candidate. Reinsch Continued To Work For China And Was In Shanghai Working On Fiscal Reform For The Chinese Government When He Died On January 24 1923. His Publications Included 1899. Shoulders Developed Preliminary Sketches And Specifications Promoting The Idea Of A Ground-To-Air Vehicle That Could Rescue Long-Distance Commuters From Hours Of Grid-Lock Traffic. In 1963 Shoulders Asked The California State Senate'S Transportation Committee For Permission To Use His Invention On Public Roads And In 1964 They Agreed. However A Number Of Nearby Municipalities Banned The Convertiplane From Their Airspace. Unable To Get The Flying Car Off The Ground Shoulders Created His Own Company Vertitek And Began Developing Remote-Controlled Drones. He Imagined A Wide Variety Of Drone Applications From Children's Toys To Agricultural Crop Dusters. One Example The Boomerang Sent Out Sound Waves To Detect And Avoid Collisions And Looked Like Giant Maple Seed. After Returning To Berlin He Became A Lecturer Of Colonial Economy At The Handelshochschule Berlin. His Writings Include Many Books On Political Conditions In The Countries Visited By Him With Much Attention To The Effects Of German Colonization And Interests. Rohrbach Was An Unapologetic Racist And A Vocal Supporter Of German Colonial Expansion. He Unequivocally Asserted That Black Societies In Africa Were Racially Incapable Of Creating Advanced Cultures And Sophisticated Political Structures. From This Premise He Concluded That Germans Were Justified In Seizing And Developing 'Underused' Land And Labor In Africa. In Practice He Endorsed Brutal Systems Of Compulsory Labor For Native Africans In Germany's Colonies. He Also Encouraged Colonial Governments To Expropriate Indigenous Lands For Distribution To White Settlers. Rohrbach Considered The African Labor Extremely Valuable To Colonial Economies And Wanted To Preserve Indigenous Populations. However He Recommended That Settlers And Colonial States Freely Employ Violence To Suppress And Deter Native Resistance. He Also Sanctioned Eradicating Rebellious African Tribes. Rohrbach Wrote More Broadly On German Foreign Policy Particularly During The First World War. He Became An Influential Public Voice In Germany's Debate Over War Aims And Contributed Directly To Discussions Over Objectives Within The German Government. Rohrbach Strongly Favored Projecting German Power Into Eastern Europe At The Expense Of The Russian Empire. However He Did Not Believe That Colonial Structures Would Be Appropriate For Governing The Spaces And Populations Of Eastern Europe. Rohrbach Proposed That The German Empire Directly Annex The Russian Governorates Along The Baltic Coast Kovno Vilna Courland Livonia And Estonia And Recommended Using Education And Settlement Policy To Gradually Germanize Their Estonian Latvian Lithuanian And White Ruthenian Populations. He Also Strongly Supported Establishing German Control Over Congress Poland But Believed That The Political And Cultural Sophistication Of The Polish Nation Effectively Prohibited Annexation And Germanization. He Instead Supported The Creation Of An Autonomous Polish State Which Would Govern Its Own Domestic Affairs But Accept The German Empire's Direction Of A Common Foreign Policy And Military Affairs. Her San Francisco Socialite Parents Sent Her To Paris Where She Studied Acting At The Comédie-Française And Art At The Prestigious Académie Julian. She Continued Acting With A French Repertory Company In New York City Performing More Than Sixty Roles In Two Years. She Worked For Several Years Performing On The Stage. Wood's Involvement In The Avant Garde Began With Her Introduction To Marcel Duchamp. He And His Friend Henri-Pierre Roché A Man Fourteen Years Her Senior Met Her In New York In 1916 While She Was Visiting The Composer Edgard Varèse. The Three Worked Together To Create The Blind Man And Subsequently Rongwrong Magazines That Were Two Of The Earliest Manifestations Of The Dada Art Movement In The United States. Though She Was Most Involved With Roché The Two Often Spent Time With Duchamp Creating A Kind Of Love Triangle. Wood Met The Art Patrons Walter And Louise Arensberg Who Became Her Lifelong Friends. From 1915 Through 1920 They Held Regular Gatherings At Their Apartment At 33 West 67Th Street In Manhattan In Which Artists Writers And Poets Were Invited To Gather Where They Were Given Drinks Hors D'oeuvres And Engaged In Intellectual Discussions. Besides Duchamp Roché And Her The Group Included Many Other Artists Of The Avant-Garde: Edgard Varese Charles Sheeler Joseph Stella Man Ray And Francis Picabia. Wood's Relationship With These Artists And Others Associated With The Avant-Garde Movement Of The Early 20Th Century Earned Her The Designation As "Mama Of Dada". Marcel Duchamp Encouraged Her To Draw Inviting Her To Use His Studio As A Place In Which To Work. Figures Were An Important Part Of The Artist's Work During The 1930S And 40S. She Explored Both Vessel Forms And Sculpture Throughout Her Career. As Her Skills Increased Wood Consciously Retained A Naive Illustrative Style To Communicate Her Commentaries On Life And Love. This Approach Makes Clear Her Love Of All Types Of Non-Western Folk And Primitive Art. Deciding To Make The Teapot Herself She Enrolled In A Ceramic Class At Hollywood High School. This Hobby Turned Into A Passion Which Lasted Another Sixty Years And She Studied With A Number Of Leading Ceramists Including Gertrude And Otto Natzler. Ultimately Wood Developed A Signature Style Of Glazing An All-Over In-Glaze Luster That Draws The Metallic Salts To The Surface Of The Glaze By Starving The Kiln Of Oxygen. In 1947 Wood Felt Her Career Was Established Enough For Her To Build A Home. She Settled In Ojai California In 1948 To Be Near The Indian Philosopher J. Krishnamurti. She Became A Lifelong Member Of The Theosophical Society-Adyar. She Also Taught And Lived On The Same Land As The Happy Valley School Now Known As Besant Hill School. At The Age Of 90 Wood Became A Writer Having Been Encouraged To Write By Her Friend Anais Nin A French Writer. Her Best-Known Book Is Her Autobiography I Shock Myself 1985. When Asked The Secret To Her Longevity She Responded "I Owe It All To Art Books Chocolates And Young Men. Wood Was A Lifelong Vegetarian Who Abstained From Alcohol And Smoking. In 1994 The Smithsonian Institution Named Wood An "Esteemed American Artist". Wood Left Her Home And Studio To The Happy Valley Foundation. He Was A Guggenheim Fellow For The Academic Year 1960-1961. In 1973 He Moved From Madison To The University Of California At Santa Cruz As Professor Of Astronomy And Astrophysics And Director Of Lick Observatory A Position He Held Until 1981. He Remained On The Faculty At Uc Santa Cruz Until His Retirement In 1993. Thereafter Emeritus Professor Osterbrock Continued To Make Daily Trips To His Office On Campus To Work On His Research To Keep Publishing And To Maintain An Active Role In The Astronomical Community. At The Time Of His Death He Had Authored 12 Monographs On Astronomy And The History Of Astronomy Including In 1989 The Influential Textbook Astrophysics Of Gaseous Nebulae And Active Galactic Nuclei And The Recently Updated And Revised 2Nd Edition 2006 Written Along With Gary Ferland Of The University Of Kentucky. Alongside His More Than 150 Articles On Astronomy And Astrophysics He Published 70 Historical Studies Biographical Memoirs And Obituaries Of Major Figures In Nineteenth And Twentieth Century Astronomy And Numerous Book Reviews.
