‎1941 - 1945 ORIGINAL GROUP OF MANUSCRIPT DIARIES 7 AND NOTEBOOK 1 DETAILING THE SERVICE DUTIES AND SOMETIMES EXTREME OPINIONS OF AN OFFICER OF THE STORIED USS RANGER AMERICA'S FIRST TRUE AIRCRAFT CARRIER‎

‎USS RANGER et al. Good. 1941. On offer is a super group of eight 8 original manuscript diaries and notebook handwritten by Lieutenant Henry Cabell Maddux Jr. while serving on the noted American warship the U.S.S. Ranger the first U.S. Navy ship specifically designed and built as an aircraft carrier. Henry proves to be a sporadic writer. Long pauses and then full and well filled pages of his doings duties but most importantly his observations of the war both predictive and specific. Historians and researchers of WWII and the actions of the US Navy will find an unusual author and commentator in Lt. Maddux. He frequently comments negatively on the methodology and philosophy behind the American war effort and the orders he and his superior officers are required to implement or not. We note a passage commenting on the Navy's desire to fight and the Army holding it back. We also note what we feel are perhaps very insightful but near seditious comments regarding Pearl Harbor: "Ensign stopped me and told me about Japan's attack as I went to my shower. At last it is here. Just as I have said for so long. God help us now. West Va. sunk Oklahoma on fire Lexington damaged and God knows what else. The fleet anchored asleep and off guard. Typical. Someone will have to answer. How could Japs come 4000 miles unseen Our poor dumb American fools - trade school stuffed shirts. Even our President fooled. Now I hope our people are satisfied. We may win but we don't deserve to. Thousands of Americans dead tonite and criminal neglect by high officers is to blame. I can just picture it. Everyone ashore lights on no blackout - suddenly the unmanned ships were blown up. I bet not one plane was ready to take the air and fight at once - not one Army or Navy. A historic day but bad for us. Now Mr. Wheeler Nye Fish Lindbergh et al - what have you to say. How right I have been all along. I can't see how anyone could have failed to see it coming. Well the war's on - let's see the great democracy try to fight democratically." Of the eight books there is: One book is of a technical nature: lists of those on watch duty sailors personnel in watch groups etc. notes from discussions regarding effective use of torpedoes perhaps half filled; then; 1941 March 27 to Dec 31st; 1942 three books the first Jan 1 to April 20th the second blank until June 25th filled near fully through September 30th the third book beginning October 2nd to November 23rd though missing a few days in November. We note the last 2-3 words of his last entry were removed. 1944 Jan 1 to Dec 31st; 1945 two books the first May 9th to October 12th; the second Jan 1 to May 8th. We can find no explanation for Lieutenant's propensity for using multiple books for some years. There are many bit of ephemera tucked in: letters chits and even pages used for diary entries when the book was not at hand. The Lieutenant was a fairly consistent though sporadic with in the books proper writing near daily though the entries tend to jump around the individual volumes and were sometimes written on loose sheets of paper then tucked in. As typical with WWII diaries there are entries about Pearl Harbor and the start of the war the atomic bombing of Japan and the end of the war in Europe and Japan though we find only a few notes and a few oblique references regarding the USS Ranger's most notable actions in the Algeria-Morocco landings and actions off Casablanca both in November 1942 and the Norway raid in October 1943. For of the books are largish 7¾ inch tall the others about 6 inches tall. All are page a day style. ‎1840 RIVETING ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT SURVIVOR'S ACCOUNT OF THE SINKING BY FIRE AND EVENTUAL RESCUE OF AN AMERICAN PACKET SHIP FILLED WITH COMBUSTIBLES AND PASSENGERS‎

‎25 MILES SOUTH OF NANTUCKET SHOALS. Good. 1840. On offer is a sensational original 38 page manuscript account dated Boston 1840 of the ill-fated voyage of the packet ship 'Poland' which caught fire on May 16 en route from New York to Le Havre in France her passengers being rescued two days later by Captain J.B. Ingersoll with the Clifton. The narrator and survivor was Mr. J.H. Buckingham a descendent of Thomas Tinker one of the Pilgrim Fathers on the Mayflower his father being Hon. Joseph Tinker Buckingham 1771-1861 politician journalist and founder of the Boston Courier in 1824. J.H. Buckingham is also associated with the Boston Courier for many years serving his father's enterprise as editor publisher and reporter. Before this voyage he had just resigned as publisher of the Boston Courier in 1939 but would return as a reporter shortly thereafter. In July 1847 he made a stage-coach trip to Chicago and throughout Illinois as a delegate to the River and Harbor Convention and as a reporter for his father's paper accompanying none other than later President Abraham Lincoln. The actual writer appears to be Elizabeth Elise Russell Tyson daughter of George Tyson a railroad official and former merchant in the China trade and Sarah Anthony Tyson. She lived with her family at 314 Dartmouth Street in Boston and in 1915 married attorney and fox hunting aficionado George D. Vaughan. The detailed account of Poland's final voyage interrupted and ended by a lightning induced fire about 25 miles south of Nantucket Shoals leaves little to the imagination as Buckingham describes all: the beginning of the journey the devastating storm and subsequent fire to the cotton and flour in the cargo hold measures taken by crew and passengers for survival the struggles and the collaborative efforts the slowly passing and uncertain hours are recounted in detail until the final rescue. Luckily for historians and researchers the witness to these events was one of the few who remained on the vessel after most were placed on longboats. Not knowing if he would survive at all his observations are recalled in a calm stoic manner his recollections vivid and clear. We quote from the Sydney Gazette: "No language" says the writer of narrative. "can tell of the sufferings of that night which was far more dreadful than the previous night." After a variety of the most agonizing apprehensions and sufferings during which the mothers who had been compelled to hold their youngest children in their arms were well nigh exhausted the ship was put before the wind in the hope of falling in with some sail and as the vessel leaked the men were put to the pump and the water first pumped up was hot. At two o'clock on the afternoon of Monday a sail was discovered from the mast-head. It proved to be the Clifton Captain J. B. Ingersoll bound from Liverpool to New York with two hundred and fifty steerage passengers. The transfer of the crew and passengers of the Poland to the Clifton was effected. At the time the last boat's load left the former her decks had become too hot to stand upon and as she rolled in the sea the water ran from her reeking sides as from hot iron. On board the Clifton every attention was paid to these who had escaped such extreme danger and in due time they were landed safely in New York." Overall G. HISTORICAL NOTES: On 11 May 1840 she left New York with a total of 63 persons on board 24 being cabin passengers. On the 16th she was struck by lightning a disastrous event which resulted in a fire being sparked onboard creating a desperate situation which just in time ended in a rescue. On the 18th the Boston built 'Clifton' commanded by Captain J. B. Ingersoll bound from Liverpool to New York with two hundred and fifty steerage passengers came upon the Poland with her passengers sequestered to the vessel's bow. She took all persons onboard along with any salvageable provisions until the Captain deemed it unsafe to continue. At the time of the last load being removed Poland's decks had become too hot to stand upon. The deeply grateful group watched the Poland burned into the sea knowing that they had so narrowly escaped the same end. The loss of property to the Poland was estimated at $150000. On offer is a sensational original scrapbook and group of ephemera related to both the 1901 Pan-American minor focus and 1904 Louisiana Purchase major focus Expositions of the publicity superintendent and man responsible for the public faces of the Fairs being a scrapbook of his incoming correspondence including several typed and signed letters from William Buchanan the Director General of Pan-American Exposition handwritten notes news and magazine clippings photos there is a wonderful F.P. Stevens aerial photo of 1904 fairgrounds looking east documents and other ephemera tucked and tipped in regarding the Fairs making for an original unique behind the scenes look. Compiled and created by Mark Bennitt sometimes Bennett a highly successful writer who became involved with both the 1901 Pan-American and 1904 Louisiana Purchase Expositions as the Publicity Superintendent. While the book goes a very long way in detailing the Fairs it is obviously Mr. Bennitt's personal scrapbook and it is apparent from the outset that Mr. Bennitt was a brilliant hire for those responsible for the Fairs' success as witnessed by the clippings related to his hiring and personal background as befits a man of success and proud of his ongoing accomplishments but that stated Mark was a master of his craft and the book tells the story of the machinations to making the Fairs and the man who made them publicity successes. Of particular interest will be that the book provides a mirror view of the Fairs as seen by the outside public while for the historian also providing a look at the Fairs from the inside. We note: Near the back are some dozen pages of later writings of Bennitt's sojourn up the West coast in 1906. ‎1838 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG MAN ENJOYING LIFE WORK AND SUNDAY SCHOOL IN GREENWICH VILLAGE NEW YORK‎

‎GREENWICH VILLAGE NEW YORK CITY NY. Fair. 1838. On offer is a super original 1838 manuscript diary handwritten by Theophilus Tappin who lived in New York City's Greenwich Village. He states: "The undersigned respectfully communicates that this is the commencement of his journal. Theophilus Tappin 26th Jan 1838 with the final entry on May 20th 1838 108 Waverly Place New York I shall strive to continue it until the day of my death." Historians and researchers of 'the Village' will understand that the young likely a teenager Mr. Tappin's diary places him in the Village at a formative and historic time called the Empire Period. Newgate Hospital had closed a mere two years before. New York University would come in their stead. Other charitable and beneficial groups opened their doors in Greenwich Village at the time our author writes. It appears he works in a retail store. Living close to the North River and obviously attuned to what occurs on the river he writes much of what goes on. He mentions the packet ships coming to port; a fire and criminality: 'A very large fire in Avenue D between 4th and 5th streets and an attempt to forge notes on the Kentucky Bank by a few rouges". He mentions a wind storm that blows a ship out of the bay and leaves only one boy onboard who is rescued; riding sleighs though New York City during snow storms; ships coming into port his first trip aboard a sailing ship; his family the struggles of work and his mother catching some illness. There is also mention of politics regarding the Whig party and elections. Towards the end of the diary some issues arise and Tappin remarks he is looking for a place over and over and seems to be depressed. This 7.5 x 6 inch 85 page or so diary makes for a fascinating look at the man and his times in mid 19th Century Greenwich Village and the backdrop of historic changes in the making for the area. Boards are detached and while he didn't write each day he writes paragraphs when he does write. There is an account section at the back. ‎GERMANY . Good. 1907. On offer is a sensational original early 20th Century manuscript book of 100s of baking and dessert confection recipes handwritten and compiled as per the inscription on the pastedown: "Michael Karner Konditor 1907". Rarely have we seen such a comprehensive book of recipes of such breadth in the dessert arts. The book has an index at the beginning indicating 32 pages of German specialties: Makron Masse Gefullte Makronen Linzertieg Klezen Brod Maderaschnitten Gugelhupf etc. Then from page 34 on the next 200 or so pages written in excellent English peppered with the odd German word putting cream in the 'mittel' of something for example it begins with English Food Cakes to Golden Rod Cakes New York Orange to all manner of cookies turnovers pies donuts buns rolls puddings parfaits etc. etc. The index continues at the rear and then there follows a six page section of hand drawn illustrations appearing to be cake icing designs some ornamental flourishes for special cakes and some fonts for writing on cakes. We can only speculate but we believe given the layout of the book and the steady writing throughout this book was created as an amalgamation of 100s of recipes finally coalesced by Michael into one book as his personal 'bible'. We also speculate that the book is very clean thusly not used in the kitchen so likely a personal reference work. ‎1685 ORIGINAL ANCIENT ENGLISH ROYAL WARRANT HANDWRITTEN A MERE FOUR DAYS AFTER THE DEATH OF CHARLES II AND IN THE NAME OF THE NEW KING JAMES II GIFTS AND LARGESSE ARE SHOWERED ON HIS FAMILY AND RETAINERS‎

‎England. Fair. 1685. On offer is an original fascinating though flawed historically significant ancient 1685 manuscript. Dated and signed February 10th 1685 handwritten a mere four days after the death of Charles II referencing the new king James II two months prior to his coronation at Westminster Abbey by and for the British Royal Postal Service being a Royal warrant and division of financial profits of the British post office to Prince George among other notables. The 44 page document begins: "Our Will And Pleasure Is That You Prepare A Bill For Our Royall Signature To Pass Our Great Seale Of England in the words or to the effect following James the Second and to all to whom these presents shall come Greetings. Whereas in pursuance of and according to a …. Covenant and agreement I will part …in accordance articles relating to the marriage and solemnized between our dearly beloved son in law Prince George hereditary of Denmark and our dearly beloved daughter Anne Princess of Denmark his wife for the selling of the yearly…of 5000 pounds of lawful English money out of the …and profit of the post office or general letter office of office of the post general and the yearly sum of 5000 pounds more of like money part of the 24000 pounds…to pay…." Historians and researchers will agree this document superbly outlines the wheels of governance and greed patronage and politics will out as the new king doles out to his own and immediately showers those he favors with wealth. While the document has suffered in its 400 years having signs of old water damage chipping around the edges and someone's attempt at a repair with tape many many years ago the significance of the manuscript is divine given the year was monumentally important in British history: the death of Charles II; his brother Roman Catholic James Stuart Duke of York becomes King James II and his Coronation at Westminster Abbey; the Monmouth Rebellion; The Battle of Sedgemoor; the death of Monmouth and Elizabeth Gaunt who was burned at the stake at Tyburn for alleged complicity in the Rye House Plot and notably she is the last woman executed for political treason in England and much more. The last page with signatures is one of the more damaged and the top half in better shape but sadly the signatures are not legible as there is a one inch diameter fault likely from a seal. ‎c1870s ORIGINAL SIGNIFICANT CIVIL WAR DIARY DETAILING THE BRUTAL TREATMENT AND SCANDALOUS TRIAL OF 3 UNION OFFICERS HANDWRITTEN BY A KEY PLAYER & MUCH MALIGNED MIDDLE AGED UNION ARMY OFFICER ATTORNEY WHO AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER HAD THE EAR OF PRESIDENTS‎

‎UTICA NEW YORK WASHINGTON DC OLD CAPITOL PRISON 1879. On offer is a sensational original manuscript Civil War relic of no little significant historical content. The author Morven M. Jones 1815-1886; Utica New York was a key player in one of the Civil War's most notorious scandals: allegations of election fraud vote tampering conspiracy leading to the brutal arrest and incarceration of three men; a Union Colonel a Major and the author a middle aged Lieutenant cashiered out as an officer due to the ill effects of his time as a POW working under the auspices of the Governor of New York whilst trying to follow unclear regulations. The case details were published in a pamphlet and researchers and historians will treasure the fact that Mr. Jones wrote his 50 page or so memoir in the broad margins of an early printed edition of this booklet about him and his co-defendants case and the trial: The United States of America vs. Samuel North Levi Cohn and Morven M. Jones the published work names him as Marvin which he corrected in pencil. Writing retrospectively we note his signature at the close of an entry near the end dated 1879 he writes a commentary following the published parts of the trial and at great length about his arrest incarceration and his time and terrible treatment at the Old Capitol Prison especially by the warden William Wood. He also writes about his time during the war conversations he had with President Abraham Lincoln and much much more offering page after page of historical narrative. Here are some snippets: North Jones and Cohn were arrested by Military Police Oct 27 1864 and at once placed in separate close confinement in Old Capitol Prison…The cells were close and sultry during the day but the nights were cold and chilly…One day I burned a broom handle slowly nearly from end to end for fear of entirely losing fire to kindle with…While in the cells we were not allowed to look out of the small windows not even to place our faces to the lower part of the window….Several times when I had my face close to the lower end of the window trying to inhale a little fresh air did I see a musket pointed at my head with the order from the sentinel to get away from that wind…several of our soldiers being shot for looking out of the windows of the prison. The windows were the death line and if a prisoner could be seen looking out the order or the practice was to shoot him…My wife was one of the most fearless women I had ever known…she could assist in an amputation of a soldiers limb with as much coolness as any surgeon in the army while all the tender sympathies of the mother wife and sister combined….soon after our imprisonment Col Foster told my wife she might as well go home that she could do her husband no good by staying in Washington and he would be convicted and sent to state prison…whenever she went in the street was under the surveillance of male and female spies and detectives. Her private baggage and clothing was searched several times once by men with shoulder straps she told these that her husband had been an officer…He suspected someone was preparing to attempt to escape that evening and if he saw anyone trying to get out there his orders were to shoot him. The attempt was made and the prisoner was shot dead and then Wood after telling the story would laugh at it as a good joke…Bill Wood superintendent of Old Capitol Atheist and generally a brute as he was sometimes had good streaks in him at one of the times when North Jones and Cohn had been taken from their cells and put in the large favored room with some 20 to 30 other gentlemen he said to us you damned New York ballot box stuffers have no business here…didn't do half as bad things as I did at Baltimore on Election day for I and the other fellows I took with me voted early and often…One prisoner by a bold reckless effort escaped in broad daylight although the prisoner was surrounded by 3 lines of sentinels…One day an old man and his daughter a good and respectable looking young woman were brought to the prison from West Virginia as hostages for a son and brother who was accused of a crime and with being in the rebel service. The girl was placed in one end of the block alone and there were seldom any but very few females prisoners in that part of the building. Wood used to visit her room ostensibly to obtain some state secrets but it was well known that he was a beast in his passions soon it was known that the girls was very ill of brain fever and was a raving maniac about a week after the body of the poor girl was carried from the prison in a rough box the father was weeping in the prison yard he had not been allowed to visit her during her illness nor was he allowed to see her remains and all of this within almost a stones throw of the Capitol of the United States…At one time a colored soldier was brought to the prison under sentence of death by court martial for shooting his wife. He was to be hanged in two days this was the first he had heard of his sentence. He was placed in a cell close by where I was and a colored preacher was sent to prepare him for his doom. Bill Wood said it looked too damned bad that if his death could be put off for a week he would find whiskey and beef steak and the nigger preacher could pray the poor devil right straight into Father Abraham's bosom. Early next morning the day of execution Wood sent the colored preacher in his carriage to ask President Lincoln to defer the execution for a week but the preacher returned saying he could not see the President. wood said no one could keep him out of the White House and he and the preacher started putting the horse to his speed…saying the President would very likely interfere and compel them to come again that it would be just as well to hang the man that morning. Wood came back jubilant over his success in seeing the President Lincoln and told the preacher to do his best and pray the nigger in Abraham's bosom…When arrested October 27 I was put in a cell with a man charged with passing Confederate money here I was buried out of sight…Nov 1 a prison official opened my cell door and ordered to proceed to the prison office as I did with a guard of a soldier with a fixed bayonet…On our trial we called for the order for our arrest and it was then By Order of Abraham Lincoln President by HA Stanton Secretary of War a forged or substituted order died the next day after we were in prison…May 17 my wife and self with Dr Coventry and Merit Peckham started for Washington on a telegram from JF Seymour this was soon after the slaughter of the Wilderness…My wife and myself devoted our time and strength to the 50000 wounded and sick soldiers in the hospitals at Washington. They died there by thousands many recovered or were removed to distant hospitals or were sent home discharged but the places were filled from the battlefield the 50000 cots were full. This was true while Republican soldiers in the hospitals in Washington had no difficulty in having their voting papers certified by officers detailed of the purpose every obstacle was thrown in the way of Democratic soldiers…An Oswego Captain whose arm was shattered so that he could but barely write his name and that with much pain and difficulty being a Democrat came from his hospital to the NY agency and for a day or two and took a few votes. For this he was at once dismissed from the service without any ceremony only for helping some wounded democratic soldiers to send home their votes for the old Gen Little Mac and Gov Seymour…The next Monday Jones and his traps were taken to cell No 8 where he was put in with a Cincinnati engraver arrested on a charge of counterfeiting…in a few days Jones was taken from No 8 and put in cell No 6 where he found Col North alone and Sick…The next day Wood called for Cohn and invited him to take a ride took him to the Treasury where they stopped fora few minutes and then drove on to the White House with as much freedom as tho he had owned the White House Bill Wood invited Cohn upstairs to see Old Abe they were shown into a small room and there Cohn found the President Col Foster the Judge Advocate and Clephane the recorder of the military court the two men who had imposed themselves upon Jones in the Prison Office 25 days before. The whole trick and conspiracy were apparent at a glance…After an Introduction President Lincoln with Foster Clephane and Wood present says President Lincoln you Mr Cohn are one of these New York prisoners arrested for fraud as to soldiers votes now if you will make a full statement of all you know about those matters you need not go back to prison but shall be discharged from this moment. Cohn replied that he knew nothing in regard to those matters but what he was willing to tell there or anywhere. Pres Lincoln then repeated what he had said that if Mr Cohn would then state what he knew he should then and there be discharged…Mr Cohn then gave a history of all he had known or see with regard to voting at the NY Agency and elsewhere…When Mr Cohn had completed his statement President Lincoln said Mr Cohn I don't see as you have hurt anybody nor could I if I told the truth was Mr Cohn's reply. The President then dismissed Cohn and Wood and Cohn started downstairs supposing that he was free according to Pres Lincoln's promise Oh No says Wood you will have to go back to prison until your statement is written out for you to sign and then you will be discharged…The McClellan meetings seemed to be the largest and most enthusiastic a large portion of the soldiers were for little Mac…on one evening the Republicans had a very large torch procession helped greatly by niggers and as it passed up Pennsylvania Avenue one of the helpers at Old Capitol Prison set fire to and burned the large National Flag hanging across the avenue in front of the Democratic Headquarters…Toward the latter part of Oct President Lincoln became quite confident of carrying New York. in cases of outrage in cases calling for sympathy or investigation President Lincoln heard and ears were more open than any member of his cabinet and yet no one democrat nor republican was allowed to approach him in regard to North…President Lincoln was made to see and feel how much he was indebted to the Sewards Fenton and the few other arch conspirators and to be made a tool of as in Cohn's case…bringing down the dignity of the Presidency to the dirty work of a detective…The President and those below him made such efforts to find or invent something which might be used in getting out of the dilemma…The prosecution had sent its spies all over the state of New York to find if possible some weak point in the characters or records of the Defts…it would be policy not to produce before a court of decent Army officers had stakes its reputation upon being able to prove monstrous frauds as to soldiers votes.one the day the trial was concluded Maj General Doubleday President of the court pronounced the whole thing a farce…Half of Grant's army would have been transferred from Petersburg to Albany the plans were formed to capture Gov Seymour and only failed in execution the object was to carry the state for Lincoln and Fenton. Suspicion and doubts were thrown around the democratic soldiers votes sent home…I then took passage for Fortress Monroe with one assistant feeling disposed to fight out the question of a NY agency on that line if it took all summer arriving in James River. We were all stopped by Gen Butler's orders. After being arrested by a lot of drakes as a Virginia rebel because I wore a light gray suit I made my way back to Washington…with six physicians and four assistants and over six hundred dollars in hospital stores I started for City Point intending to establish an agency where New York soldiers would be looked after and cared for some as soldiers of other states…on arriving at City Point obstacles were immediately thrown in the way of landing my good s and storing them. We arrived at City Point in PM of 22nd and were directed back a mile or two to the main camp where are found lodgings in tents. The next morning all of the physicians were ordered to duty as common nurses in various corps hospitals and our six physicians were assigned to duty as such…Our guards kindly marched us aboard the steamboat and with many curses against those who had treated us in that manner…at that time it was decided that I was drunk and sutured the camp and that was the reason for my expulsion…" Overall G. BIO NOTES: Morven M. Jones fought in the Civil War for the Union in the 2 New York Heavy Artillery Regiment. He entered the war with the rank of 1 Lieut. and left with the rank of 1 Lieut. Company M mustered in December 12 1861. Jones was the former Chief Clerk Office Secty of State NY; one of the founders and organizers of the Oneida Historical Society; "attorney autograph collector and victim of one of the most scandalous political trials of the Civil War." HISTORICAL NOTES: Wiki: Old Capitol Prison 1861-1867 With the start of the Civil War in 1861 the Union repurchased the building to use as a prison for captured Confederates as well as political prisoners Union officers convicted of insubordination and local prostitutes. Many people arrested following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln were also held here. These included Dr. Samuel Mudd Mary Surratt Louis Weichmann and John T. Ford owner of Ford's Theater where Lincoln was shot. The adjoining row of houses Duff Green's Row was also used as part of the prison. On offer is a sensational original manuscript notebook handwritten during the summer of 1944 in London during the horrible 'Buzz Bomb' onslaught or V1 campaign that began in June of 1944 by Nazi Germany. Not merely a home front diary filled with 60 pages of street view entries of life and living conditions during the awful summer of 1944 from an astonishing woman in even more astonishing circumstances along with the back drop of death coming from the air from July 26th through to August 22nd this not quite month long diary is a treasure of emotion a significant memoir of the time and a couple of movies rolled into one. The unidentified author a woman of education practicality and sensuality she is also a symbol of British steadfastness and the 'keep calm and carry on' spirit that propelled England in its determination to defeat the Germans. The definition of indomitable she begins the journal: July 26th 'It might be a good idea to find out just exactly where I am and start this new volume in an assessment of things. There are still bombs and there will be more. I still do not like them but am contemptuous rather than frightened and without any defiance but just plain feeling I would prefer to die rather than run from them. All this is not without its bad effects. I work hard. Too hard because the nervous strain is quite out of proportion. I am easily depressed by the lack of effort on the part of authorities to cope with this thing more than this I am becoming really bitter about the suffering of the public to a state where I blot out all sympathy of the more personal sort and do the job mechanically. The attempt to close down on all my larger emotions is successful but will have its payoff and I a dull deadly dull.' Further reading and we learn she appears to be living with two men one an artist Arthur who 'drew his usual series of dead and staring bodies and bombed buildings' the other a writer. Like the plot of a movie this seems to be a love triangle or more apt a want-to-be-love triangle: 'After a couple of hours it dawned on me they weren't talking in the abstract at all and that even without my amazing ego's influence it was possible John at any rate had a pretty good idea of the woman he would share with Arthur. Me for instance.' A fascinating woman the type who calls other men's girlfriends wenches and a pragmatic gal who admits she figures John will use her as 'a stop gap' and references to her own needs and why they are unmet. A mere month if that and packed with drama intrigue and historic perspective by a very capable and erudite woman. The pressures of the day jump from the page with much talk of fire watching and the result of stresses on those living through a possible death at any moment from the sky: her Mother accuses Father of a dalliance with Molly and the writer's own turmoil. Add the precariousness of life the pervasiveness of death all the while on the front line of terror makes for a singularly unique diary. ‎ABOARD THE USTS ENTERPRISE. Good. 1901. On offer is a super group of four 4 folio manuscript logbooks 2 and exercise books 2 handwritten and compiled by Navy cadet Herman T. Parker who served aboard the United States Naval training ship USTS Enterprise between 1901 - 1902. Beginning under the command of Edward Merritt Hughes from June 1 1901 to Oct 12 1901 and then commanded by Edward David Taussig June 14 1902. Uniquely the group of four presents the historian and researcher of Naval education an opportunity to view the education alongside the performance as the official USTS Enterprise logs are filled with the standard data all sailors have recorded since the Age of Sail: weather winds nautical or ship observations position and status. There are any number of fascinating entries: the Prince and Princess of Norway boarding the Enterprise an encounter with the Russian Fleet a review by the Czar of Russia's Royal Yacht a German royal yacht in review and boarding ships; a number of exchanges with the British German and French Navy. There are many cases were the Enterprise encounters Fleets of the Russian Navy. Another interesting entry: "Port watch -went on liberty at 9 commanding officer made official calls on U.S. consul charge d'affaires Vice Admiral De Loviui Command of Port Vice Admiral Avalon Admiralty Molars." ‎1919 - 1922 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND LOG BOOK OF A BUSY HUNTER TRAPPER AND FISHERMAN PLYING HIS TRADE ON THE ALASKAN PENINSULA‎

‎ALASKA. Fair. 1919. On offer is a fascinating original 100 page or so manuscript diary dated September 3rd 1919 to May 18th 1922 handwritten by an unidentified trapper hunter fisherman in the Alaskan Peninsula. While the writer is unidentified we feel certain that there are enough clues that local researchers or historians of the place and time should be able to ascertain the author's identity. Rather than a solitary worker it appears the unknown author manages traplines and works with other trappers and fisherman. Found in an old cabin in Alaska the paper cover and first page or so has some issues related to damp and poor storage and some small loss of narrative; perhaps 10% of the first page bottom left far less of the second but the rest of the pages are quite good. Here are some snippets: "Arrived at Unagastick at 4 PM with stores discharged and cleaned the house…Strong easterly wind clear and fine the natives held church today…Quite a bit of ice in the creek glass about 25 Serge came from Illwick and hauled his boat up…3 Drakes arrived from Chignick also one boat from Northbound somewhere around Cape Sennewine the natives did not bring any mail…One boat arrived from Illnick at 12 AM Gustia and Boy…Gustia left for Illnick this morning I am repairing the wind break… Noon blowing quite a breeze from Northwest the natives are going to Illnick to hunt Caraboo Fred Nielson left for his place this morning…the natives came back to much wind took quite a few fish out of the net… No natives showing up yet no more fish in Unagashack took my net in…one bydarkie arrived from Illnick bound for Chignick trying to get the mail at the same time… One boat arrived from Illnick with Serge Ocyntia and wife and the boys… Fred Nilson left for his camp this morning 8 AM the mail arrived from Chignick at 6 PM…Aleck Artinnie and father left for Illnick at 3 PM in a bydarkie….took a look over the trapping grounds shots few ducks… Boys out goose hunting a gale from the Southeast no geese…in the afternoon Justia and Falmilie arrived from Illnick also Marcie and Ignetty from Bear River… Gustier and boys left for Illnick this morning to trapping grounds in bydarkie…took out some of my traps and drove stakes… Blowing from Northwest a real snowstorm cannot see anything glass down to zero… Breeze from North and getting colder at 3:30 PM there teams 1 from Illnick and 2 from Bear River arrived… Boys making ready to go to Port Heiden…snow drifting….glass 10 above cannot go to Port Heiden today… dug out some of my traps and reset them… Sent 2 teams to Port Heiden for supplies left at 2 AM… Blowing hard from Northeast at 4 PM one team with Gustia and three Natives arrived from Chiswick. ‎ALTOONA PENNSYLVANIA to RUMMEUG CHINA. Good. 1941. On offer are a fascinating pair 2 of original 1941 and 1945 manuscript World War II diaries handwritten by a young Jewish man Sidney Schulman from Altoona Pennsylvania. Born May 25th 1923 he would be a mere 17 years old at the start of the first diary. Sidney is an erudite writer and certainly has a lot of pizzazz but what makes this pair of diaries significant to even the casual reader we witness this high school boy become this barely freshman at Pennsylvania State College as he is just graduating from high school and in the fall he heads to college and then in the fall of 1942 he enlists in the Army Air Force and serves as a B-29 Gunner until the war is over. From boy to man from car dates in America to looking for action in the red light districts of Asia as Sidney details a fair bit in 1945 of his service while stationed in the heart of China. One cannot fail to be impressed seeing this young college student grow into a fighting man in the span of the two diaries. Here are some snippets: 1941 "January 9th School uneventful. Same old routine. Talked to Bill for ½ hr on plane about _____. Don't know whether doing things right. Have to have real show down with her a lot but Time will tell. Am really in a bag. On offer is a super historically significant manuscript artifact of early Soviet Russia and American relations being the handwritten journal of Adele Rice Mrs Owen R. Rice Oak Park Illinois dated April 10th 1929 titled "Our Trip to Russia"; a member of the American Delegation sent on an educational and fact finding mission to Russia a mere 12 years after the Russian Revolutions. The findings and observations of this group are research suggests what the book "Russia and the United States" was based on. The book's first entry of the 185 or so pages of narrative was April 3rd then sporadically filled until the last entry Oct. 22nd which we note was exactly one week before the Black Tuesday stock-market crash. The diary is filled with detailed entries of her personal experiences entries cover politics delegation business Russian history and social commentary and her journeys whether shopping for antiques and jewelry or to the many parties. She takes numerous lessons on Russia while also teaching them. She also does a super job providing specifics with names times dates including; E. Gordon Fox head engineer of the group the diary refers to who wrote 'Russia and the Communist Challenge'; Miss Tolstoy grandniece of the immortal author Count Leo Tolstoy; the Secretary to Swedish Consul; mention of the funeral of Kutlikoff "The Communist head of finance"; Kshesinskaya Danseuse; Mr. Miller of the Hamburg American Line; Sir Perry Chief Engineer at Ford Motor Company this was the time Henry Ford signed an agreement with the Soviet Union to produce cars there; Bill Orr William; Naberezhnaya Krasnogo Flota the Red Fleet; talks about VOKS a cultural society for relations with foreign countries and much much more. Here are some snippets: Saturday April 20th Passport official ordered us off the train because we had no visa in Chicago we were told a visa was unnecessary. Had we been passing thru Holland a visa would not be required. However as we were returning to Germany one was required. Official very mean. Wouldn't return out PP until we were seated in return train. Damn those Dutch! Monday April 22nd - Went down to lunch. Became acquainted with an aristocratic old lady. After I left the dining room she sent the head waiter after me to ask if she could show me around town. I accepted with pleasure. Saw the summer palace of Catherine the great but we were so cold we almost froze to death. Tuesday April 30th - Took an automobile and went to the Europa Hotel. Went out to find a restaurant but none were open so we returned to hotel and ordered breakfast which was served at 11:30. I never could bear a soft boiled egg but this morning I ate two! Then we had a business meeting. After which Manus arranged with a Druski driver to take Mary and myself out to see #48 Naberezhnaya Krasnogo Flota our new home. Sunday May 19th - Up at 9 AM for breakfast. Came back and built fire. Heard the band coming down Naberezhnaya Krasnova. Opened our double window and watched the band escort over 200 sailors to the transport boat. A large crowd had followed many wives with little children also sweethearts and parents. One little boy about 2 yrs old cried bitterly to go to his father who was in the ranks. Sunday July 21st - Most of the boys worked today so we had tea and sandwiches at noon and dinner at 5:30. Mrs F. & I took a walk as far as the winter palace. Young dated January 1942 to October 1946 being a fascinating and eclectic melange of intelligent observation and commentary on the global war news family business his toy soldier hobby malaria bouts and his return to the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment since the Commandos are being disbanded after the war and many references to his distinguished famous and future author son Peter including entries about big war events with Young Sr.'s analysis: Stalingrad Pacific war events D-Day a very interesting dissertation on what the Atomic Bomb might mean to mankind written the day of Hiroshima as well as notes about Ghandi and the trouble he was causing the British. Included in the book are a few ephemeral items including one very interesting letter signed by W.G.H. Rawlinson a former Captain connected to Dallas. The letter makes a sadly bigoted reference to Harold Laski and 'yidds'. BIO NOTES: Mr. Young was a senior civil servant in the India Office in the 1930s/40s we note that Dallas Young was awarded an MBE and his son was a quite famous war hero and later author: Brigadier Peter Young DSO MC. Peter Young joined the newly-formed Commandos and landed with them at Dieppe Sicily and on D-Day being decorated for bravery each time. Sensational 1899-1903 Belle Époque collection of two scrapbooks and one handwritten personal diary by a young singer named Ethel Fiske who studied under some of the greatest vocal instructors of her time. Fiske was the daughter of Harvard professor and author Dr. John Fiske. She lived on Brattle Street in Cambridge Massachusetts and was 27 years old when she began writing the diary. Sensational 1899-1903 collection of two scrapbooks and one handwritten personal diary by a young singer named Ethel Fiske who studied under some of the greatest vocal instructors of her time. Fiske was the daughter of Harvard professor and author Dr. John Fiske. She lived on Brattle Street in Cambridge Massachusetts and was 27 years old when she began writing the diary. Fiske’s entire diary is concerned with her voice lessons in the United States and in Paris. She records what happens in her lessons names the songs that she sings and comments on and critiques her music teachers. When Fiske lived in Cambridge her teacher was Mademoiselle Avigliana a Dramatic Soprano who had once worked at Covent Garden and the Royal Italian Opera. There are several long letters from Avigliana to Fiske included in the diary. The following are excerpts taken from Fiske’s dairy: “I took a lesson. I sang all the lessons through. …Mlle gave us a new arpeggio several notes longer than the second one . Then I sang ‘Thou That Tellest. ’ She said ‘this is a good lesson’” February 22 1899. “I sang to Miss Willis and Mr. Frank Lee in Nichewaug music room without accompaniment. Mr. Lee said ‘it was delicious’” September 7 1900. In October 1900 at age 28 Fiske travels to France with her friend Francis Ames where Fiske along with a successful young student named Miss Dodge becomes the student of Paul Marcel. Fiske hopes to become a singing sensation and her diary is full of the compliments and words of praise that she garners. Her father dies and she returns to the United States for several weeks. She then returns to France to become the student of famous German mezzo-soprano Mathilde Marchesi at her school on Rue Jouffroy. There are two original handwritten letters from Marchesi tucked into the dairy. Fiske does not explain why she left the tutelage of Marcel. Marchesi is known today as the teacher of a significant number of great singers including Nellie Melba Emma Calvé and Frances Alda. One entry indicates that by 1903 Fiske had established her own salon: “I sang in my salon to Mr. & Mrs Hallett. Sallia played for us ‘L’Eselave’. . Mrs Hallett said my voice was ‘magnificent’ October 29 1903. Tipped in or laid in the diary are seven music programs eleven original handwritten letters nine news clippings seven original photographs including two of Ms. Ames and six miscellaneous pieces of ephemera. The diary ends somewhat abruptly. There is a short section dated 1904 which indicates that Fiske is still in France and has a salon at which she sings for very small audiences. Fiske’s scrapbooks contain extensive clippings of opera and theater performances in Paris during the 1902 1903 and 1904 seasons. The covers of both scrapbooks have separated from the binding but all pages are intact. Included are numerous playbills and magazine clippings regarding shows and actresses. Fiske has recorded the dates of every performance she attended as well as many of the restaurants she dined in she includes names or initials of her theater and dinner companions. The newspaper clippings and theater programs are in excellent condition. Examples of items preserved include detailed restaurant bills calling cards invitations and personal notes and letters. There are several news articles about a famous criminal fraud case involving the notorious Therese Humbert as well as photographs of various theater stars including Sarah Bernhardt. There is also a 1902 map of the Paris Metro. Fiske’s scrapbooks offer a comprehensive look at the cultural and theatrical life in Paris over a century ago.
