Water buffalo hide gilt and pigment chiselled and cut out 40 x 39 cms fully extended painted both sides one arm jointed and affixed to a bamboo baton the other arm stationary holding a staff another spliced bamboo baton holding the body some fading and loss of pigment. This puppet represents the seer or sage Durwasa in the Javanese 'wayang kulit' or leather shadow puppet theatre tradition. <br> <br>Resi Durwasa Durvasa in the Indian Mahabharata was known as a bestower both of curses and boons. He invested Krishna with partial invulnerability. To Dewi Kunti he bestowed a mantra to invoke gods by whom she could beget sons. Unwisely trying this out she became pregnant by the Sun God Surya. Resi Druwasa enabled the birth of her son Karna via her ear and the infant was put into a basket and floated down a river to be found and adopted by others. ‎This Connecticut legislator and civil servant served as Secretary of the Navy under Presidents Lincoln and Johnson 1861-69. ADS 1p 8" X 9½" n.p. 1848 August. Very good. Attractive pale blue lined sheet. Welles at this time chief of the bureau of provisions and clothing for the U.S. Navy requests a $150 advance for costs incurred in traveling from Washington to Auburn New York to attend the case of United States vs. L. Caldwell as well as reimbursement for two past trips. Signed with his usual cramped "GWelles." This item is accompanied by an exceptional and scarce 8" X 10" glossy photograph a full-length portrait possibly from a Mathew Brady negative made circa 1950 by pioneering photography historian FREDERICK HILL MESERVE 1865-1962 "America's first great photograph collector" who assigned numbers to Lincoln photographs "Meserve numbers" that are still used today. This striking image was quite likely made from the original glass plate negative as was Meserve's habit. It is identified on the verso in pencil in Meserve's distinctive hand: "Gideon Welles / The Meserve Collection." A handsome document and a highly desireable accompanying image. unknown‎

‎Chicago: Civic Opera House 1943. Paperback. Very Good. 24 p.: illustrations; 25 cm. Stapled white wrapper printed in red and blue with American flag on front. The Army Emergency Relief was established in Feb. 1942 to assist soldiers and their dependents. In July 1942 "This Is the Army" by Irving Berlin opened on Broadway to raise funds for the AER. The production consisted of an actual Army unit which included a cast and crew of over 300 soldiers. A national road show was then organized and in the summer of 1943 the movie was filmed. This program was for the performances at the Civic Opera House in Chicago in the first half of January 1943. It lists every performer including Burl Ives 1909-1995; Claude Watson on the banjo and Cesare Pascarella on the cello; Gary Merrill 1915-1990; Julie Oshins 1906-1956; Marion "Spoons" Brown 1915-1947; and of course Irving Berlin 1888-1989. Includes cartoons and advertisements; information about the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps WAAC is on the inside of the front wrapper. Very scarce. In Very Good Condition: wrapper is lightly soiled; minor scraping on 2 pages of ads; a few light pencil marks; otherwise clean and solid. Civic Opera House paperback‎
