‎1929–1941 HIAS Transit and Cuban Jewish Refugee Archive: the Moishe Perkowicz Case File‎

On offer is an extraordinary micro-archive documenting the transnational machinery of Jewish migration through Havana in the interwar and wartime years. Together these five surviving pieces trace the path of one refugee family’s attempt to navigate the bureaucratic philanthropic and humanitarian networks that sustained Jewish life in exile. From Warsaw to Philadelphia and finally to Havana the papers preserve the intricate record-keeping of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society HIAS and the Centro Israelita de Cuba offering a uniquely human lens on the mechanics of rescue. At the heart of the lot stands a notarized Affidavit of Support sworn before a New York notary by Louis Gray on behalf of Moishe Perkowicz a Polish Jew detained in Cuba in 1929. The affidavit embossed with seal and official signatures testifies that Gray would “receive and maintain the said Perkowicz so that he shall not become a public charge. ” It represents the formal bond between American Jewish guarantors and European refugees—a type of legal-logistical document seldom preserved outside institutional archives. A penciled slip lists Sura Perkowicz Moishe Perkowicz and Paula dated 1929 and includes “Dr. Kancelaria 17 Warsaw” likely a doctor’s office address not a physician’s name pointing to a professional contact who agreed to assist with the case. Two Centro Israelita de Cuba acknowledgments bookend Perkowicz’s Havana case with unusual specificity. The first dated July 26 1937 states: “Check No. 104 for the amount of $50.00 Fifty dollars made payable to me Moishe Perkowicz as per order of the HIAS N. Y. July 21th 1937.” It bears his autograph M. Perkowicz. Completing the sequence is a HIAS Philadelphia letter of June 24 1941 addressed to the Centro Israelita de Cuba. Typed on official letterhead it requests confirmation of assistance provided to refugees still in transit through Havana illustrating how North-American branches coordinated with Cuban affiliates during the global refugee crisis of World War II. Though not directly tied to the Perkowicz file its inclusion situates the earlier case within the broader network of wartime Jewish rescue and correspondence across the Americas. Taken together these documents form a coherent case file that moves from sponsorship and notarization to on-the-ground relief and administrative closure. They capture the procedural texture of displacement—the receipts affidavits and appeals that collectively embody the lived reality of migration. As a historical unit the archive bridges personal narrative and institutional history illustrating how international Jewish philanthropy translated compassion into paperwork and passage. The narrative completeness of the lot and the scarcity of parallel HIAS–Cuba materials are highly appealing and the dual signed receipts anchor the group as a personalized record; the 1929 affidavit and 1941 Philadelphia letter expand it into a longitudinal study of trans-hemispheric refugee coordination. Condition and Language: Five documents primarily in English and Spanish with Polish elements; typed and manuscript on mixed paper stocks. Both receipts remain legibly signed. Moderate toning and fold marks consistent with archival age. ‎Sensational 1927 Rare Typed Occult Manuscript of "My Travels in the Spirit World"‎

‎Rutland Vermont: The Tuttle Company. Good with no dust jacket. 1927. Manuscript. On offer is a 1927 typed manuscript of a very rare book on the occult: My Travels in the Spirit World by Caroline D. Larsen. Measuring 8.5 inches by 11 inches the manuscript is 100 percent complete containing 41 single-sided typewritten pages. The pages are contained in a manila folder and bound at the spine with yarn. The cover binding and pages are all in good condition. The title page of the manuscript contains a very subtle watermark that reads "Eagle-A Type Erase 25% Cotton Fiber USA." The title page also lists the publication date 1927; publisher The Tuttle Company in Rutland Vermont; and most notably an endorsement from Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The endorsement reads "I think the book is valuable." Author Caroline Dorothea Jensen Larsen was born in Denmark around the year 1860 and in 1899 married a violin teacher named Alfred Larson. For the early years of their marriage Alfred Larson conducted the Montreal Amateur Symphony in Quebec. The couple later moved to Vermont where Caroline’s husband founded the Burlington Symphony Orchestra and the Larsen Violin School. During the Jazz Age when Caroline Larsen published My Travels in the Spirit World America was exceedingly fascinated with the supernatural. Cults had become popular throughout California and around the country and certain occult practices like speaking to the dead became part of pop culture. In her introduction Larsen writes "Now when speculation and research concerning the life after death are arousing more interest in the public mind than at any other time in human history it seems peculiarly fitting that I should publish my 'Travels in the Spirit World.' So far every attempt to lift the curtain that separates us from the realms of the spirits has been carried on through a 'medium'. But in this little book I shall describe scenes of the Spirit World which I have witnessed with my own eyes and I shall relate conversations with spirits in which I have actually taken part. I have been enabled to tell you of these marvelous sic occurrences by virtue of a rare faculty which few possess: the ability to leave the physical body and to live for the time being in the astral the power of being a spirit though there has been no actual physical death" 1. Larsen writes of her ability to detach herself from the physical world and live in the astral world as a spirit describing scenes she actually witnessed and communications made with others in the spirit world: "I met and recognized a woman spirit who on earth had been a Royal Queen of modern times . . . She walked around in seemingly stunned bewilderment ignorant of having passed over . . . She simply could not understand her present predicament . . . She did not notice me. I simply watched her for a while out of curiosity" 14. This is a rare and interesting example of occult writing from the 1920s. ‎1966 Fascinating Marine Biology Scientific Logbook and Reports of a Research Team on the Pacific Ocean Completing a Multi-Year Oceanography Study‎

On offer is a manuscript logbook of extensive notes plus two typed reports from the Director of Investigations of an environmental commission responsible for the conservation and management of marine resources in the eastern Pacific Ocean. This collection feels particularly important when one considers the 21st century focus on environmental protection and climate change. This collection was compiled as part of a large project commissioned by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission IATTC. The IATTC was initially established as a treaty between the United States and Costa Rica in 1949 with a mission to conduct research on marine resources in the ocean. According to its website its reason for being is “responsibility for the conservation and management of tuna and other marine resources in the eastern Pacific Ocean from Canada in the north to Chile in the south”. Additionally the IATTC has significant responsibilities for the implementation of the International Dolphin Conservation Program. Between 1965 and 1966 the IATTC carried out four Augmented Colombian EI Nino Oceanography ACENTO research cruises. The ACENTO project was intended to study the area of the Panama Bright to determine correlation between tuna availability and environmental conditions. All four research cruises took place on the ship Bocas de Cenzia which was owned and operated by Empresa Puertos de Colombia and had previously been used by the United States Army during World War II. The 1965 cruises took place in May August and November of 1965. The fourth and final cruise was scheduled for February of 1966. The collection on offer contains the printed report on the itinerary and findings of the November 1965 cruise as well as all the field notes and final typed report of the February 1966 cruise. The IATTC researchers on the 1966 cruise were lead by Director of Investigations Eric D. Forsbergh. His scientific team included Witold L. Klawe Enrique L. Diaz and Cuthbert M. Love. The expedition also included a large naval team to run ship operations. Finally the research cruise was attended by Tuna Commission guests including two professors from the University of Valle Universidad de Valle del Cauca in Cali Columbia. The Scientific Logbook contains detailed near constant handwritten notes from all four scientists. The notes take the reader through the minute to minute work of the research team. Through their notes we know exactly when they arrived at each research station and what they accomplished in each location. We get a sense of their ongoing challenges such as nets that are not properly tied mandated government labels that don’t stick to samples challenges with the supplied specimen bottles that have leaks causing the oxygen to aerate wire getting caught in their nets and compromising their abilities to catch fish a broken down gas-powered alternator inclement weather and injuries to crew members. An excerpt that gives the flavor of how these issues are described in the logbook follows: “Dr. Patino and Regalado plan to get off…Dr. Regalado has been quite seasick…a Coke bottle fell on a crew member and broke his nose. He will also be let off at Tumaco for treatment at Hospital” Feb 21 1966. Through the notes the reader not only gets a deep sense of the research being accomplished but also of the personalities of the research team. For example head investigator Eric D. Forsbergh becomes increasingly frustrated by technical issues on the ship noting ongoing issues in all-caps and eventually using a red pencil crayon to write “THERE MUST BE A CURSE ON US ON THIS WRETCHED SHIP” Feb 23 1966. Forsbergh also notes non-research related events at the research station. For example at Station #18 on Gorgona Island he writes “Yesterday the prisoners revolted…killed some guards and took over a boat” Feb 23 1966. An example of the scientific research notes follow: “Apparently there is a very strong under current at bearing 00 which screwed up the nice timing we had made in the previous ACENTO cruises. Moved the boat several times until the direction of the current was estimated. Changed weights to a very heavy one <100 lbs Zooplankton haul went smoothly and got 5 bottles of samples; this seemsto be a rich area” p 8. Accompanying the manuscript logbook are two reports on the ACENTO missions prepared and typed by Forsbergh. It seems that Forsbergh used his 1965 report for reference during the 1966 expedition. The 1966 report summarizes and expands upon the notes in the scientific logbook. One can assume the 1965 report does the same though we do not have that logbook to compare. These are excellent examples of the work that was being done in the mid-1960s in an effort to monitor and manage tuna fishery in the Pacific. Through its Alcotines Laboratory the IATTC provides a unique research ability for tuna and other pelagic species. For marine scientists or biologists these reports offer a terrific view of the level of work being done at that time and an interesting comparison point to work being done today. The report consists of a hardbound notebook accompanied by two type-written reports. The notebook measures 10.5 inches by 8 inches. It contains 72 pages and is approximately 85% complete. The notebook is in good condition with undamaged covers intact binding and legible handwriting. The two accompanying reports are single-sided typewritten pages. They are seven pages and six pages respectively. The notebook contains data recorded from an expedition in February 1966 and the two reports are dated Dec 1965 and March 1966 respectively. BIO NOTES ON DIRECTOR FORSBERGH: Eric D. Forsbergh. Forsbergh was a biological oceanographer who worked as a senior scientist with the IATTC. He was a Harvard graduate with a B. A. In biology and he lived in San Diego California until his death in 2014 at the age of 86. Included in the group housed in a 3 and almost a half inch thick binder is a notebook crammed with internal NASA reports on the Saturn Flight Evaluation Group including many formerly "Classified" documents which were later declassified. There are many NASA Saturn/Apollo executive memorandums fold out charts copies of letters and some hand-written notes by Puttkamer on the subject of rocket booster recovery much on this subject and launch vehicle recovery. There are proposals for experiments to be undertaken on Saturn rockets personal papers of Puttkamer regarding training etc. and much much more. Many of the documents are dated or date-stamped 1964 and 1965 making for a superb insider's peek into the internal workings of NASA and the Apollo program. On offer is a sensational original manuscript diary that details and documents an epic 10000 mile journey by truck for the most part that begins in Little Kimble Buckinghamshire a small town north-west of the Greater London area to Europe and then moves to North Africa across the Sahara through the Belgian Congo to the final destination South Africa. Remarkably the expedition was undertaken by 17 year old Sylvia Bond-Smith the author and her 20-year old brother Derek. Driving through much dangerous and wild terrain their difficulties deprivations and triumphs are retold by this erudite and intrepid traveler in this very detailed journal; from the practical and mundane day to day details of their journey to a wealth of keen eyed and charming observations of this very young woman on the adventure of a lifetime. The 300 pages or so 7" x 4.5" book is rife with experiences from mileage numbers to describing an elephant and gorilla hunt. Midway Sylvia and her brother meet up with their father who is exploring in the Belgian Congo. Adding further depth to the super narrative are the tipped in and some tucked in ephemera; train tickets stamps hotel ephemera news clippings the intrepid Smith-Bond siblings meet mid journey two journalists who become attached to the Smith's and document their story: "A boy a girl and a truck and ten thousand miles of adventure. That is the thrilling prospect facing Kimble brother and sister Derek Bond-Smith 20 and Sylvia 17. Very soon the Bond-Smiths embark on their biggest journey yet - 10000 miles by truck to Cape Town. Their route lies across 2000 miles of scorching Sahara - where they will follow a faint track marked every 60 miles by a petrol can through to the steaming Congo Nigeria Kenya and down through Tanganyika and Rhodesia." and a number of hand drawn maps and illustrations litter the journal. With great amusement we read an entry of their accommodations at one point: 'cheap not very clean but a nice old girl running it' then a later hand a one word note in pencil on the top margin with an arrow to the passage reading 'brothel'. Here are some snippets: Dec 6th 1951 To the Spanish frontier at La Jungesa - Gathering Kit getting official forms etc we drove on a bit and found a perfect camping site just off the road. Smooth grass and a kind of Oak tree and little cub bushes and mountains all around very beautiful. Got tent up and found water from a nearby stream and got meal. While eating too Dutchman came up whose signatures above. Cycling to South Africa so they hope through Spain and down West Coast of Africa. Algers Laghanek Dec 23rd 1951 Land flat at first than came to Atlas Telliem it became very rocky. Steep rocks very steep road cut right down. Very sleepy and couldn't keep my eyes open for long come out to a plateau passed through Boyhem in village stopped to talk 3 women and two men French bitterly cold stopped for lunch on desolate plain. Dec 30th 1951 Up at 6:15 supplies very short and all have been hungry for a few days very little breakfast. Jan 4th 1952 Up at 6 after about 4 hours of sleep got booked in what turned out - to be a very nice place with running water hot bath etc. Consists of several buildings and got nice room with bath around corner no sights nets above bed. First we have seen like this. Little would I have thought a year ago I would ever be in Nigeria so far its a very nice place were in now. Not much vegetation but lots of English colonist about which is pleasant like being home again only Colonial atmosphere I soon get into a bath and how I needed one never been so dirty in my life & had a good splash around. Felt really good to be so clean again first time I have had clothes off since we left Alger. Jan 14th 1952 Up at five it was still dusk found then & Skye sleeping in sleeping because of animals on the road. On road at 6:30 just as sun was rising beautiful sunshine. Saw several groups of guinea fowl several of which Derek blasted away and missed- saw no game - except 3 small Gazelle and two big monkeys. At Kobo we stopped at the road and bought two Pawpaws papayas and stopped for breakfast had my first Pawpaw which was quite good soon after Kapo came upon several cry neatly laid out and constructed villages some buildings still use leaina foundations leashed together with creepers. One deserted village rather impressive. Bush in this area very thick and road narrow. Jan 21st 1952 Captured several gorillas from the Rinzori mountains - The biggest gorillas in the world - Mal Shot one weighing 1/2 a ton with Teryizi large dimensions & black & hairy & strong It immediately wounded 2 of the natives while itself was wounded and dying on the ground. It grabbed one of them by the hand and flung him for 30 meters and the natives hand stayed in the gorillas grasp his bones crushed like butter. On offer is a super fascinating 14 x 12 inch 300 page diary and manuscript relic of post-World War I adventures and nautical life handwritten by Arthur Gordon while he served as Third Mate on the S.S. Rheem dated Nov 4 1919 through to May 8 1920. Elevating this diary of life aboard a working ship en route to Central America is that this wonderful account is written by an aspiring author whose keen eye and gift for narrative are revealed early in the journal. Gordon would later write stories on naval sea and air themes the Merchant Marine and books on sea history such as "The Years of Peril" an account of the experiences of Mobil Co. ships during WW II. Here is a snippet: Thursday 13 1919 On SS W.S. Rheem Bayonne N.J. This morning I had a strong prediction that I would find work. I took along everything I would need in case I did and it was a fortunate thing for at nine thirty I was on my way to the New York offices of Walker and Daly. They wanted a Third Mate I was a Third Mate and wanted a job: nothing could be simpler. I signed the articles then and there without seeing the ship or knowing where it was bound. I went to the club packed my trunk and found my way to the ship. We are leaving for some Mexican Port at nine o'clock tomorrow morning. November 18 1919 SS W.S. Rheem Ran into a north-easter last night and we were forced to lay up to the wind and ride it out. it was a mean black watch that I stood. This morning's watch was as bad. High rough seas and blinding rain storms makes four hours seem like days. When I came below at twelve and has a chance to look at my hands I thought that my fingers resembled pale sweet pickles so puckered up they were with rain. November 20 1919 The actions of the officers with whom I am to become familiar lead me to believe the they will be fair square and congenial. The captain Harry Jensen by name of Danish and reminds me Kristens father. He is gruff and outspoken but has good sound judgment and is gifted with certain considerations which show him to be well aquatinted with and willing to deal easily with the fallibilities of the human race. Mr Gullickensen the Chief Mate a Norwegian is of mild and pleasing disposition he has very large feet and wears blue suspenders although I'm sure he doesn't know it like King Albert of Belgium . The engineers are separated from the Mates and i do not know any of them excepting the Chief and he appears to be quite friendly. The radio operator is English but hails from Lyann Mass and he and i at once joined forces to defend Massachusetts should anything disparaging be mentioned of her. The wireless man goes by the name of "Sparks "aboard ship in fact all radio operators are dubbed "Sparks" This fact leads those who are not familiar with it to make the amusing error that Mr Green a passenger of ours made when after a few days out at sea introduced himself and said "My name is Green Mr Sparks and I 'am glad to know you'. This caused much merriment and led Sparks to say it was a common occurrence." An old salt Gordon served in the Navy on the USS Washington and wanted to go back to sea. The SS W.S. Rheem travels to Mexico and Panama and others ports. This particular diary is incredibly detailed: his description of shipboard life on various ships the times he spent at the Panama Canal and the Gulf of Mexico ports like Tampico Mata Redona Mexico Colon Panama Key West Cape Hatteras but Gordon's description of Mexico and Panama are wonderfully intimate and detailed covering numerous pages. Adding further breadth to this journal are two loose pages from a scrapbook with photos depicting different ships five large photos of a crewman and one of Gordon. There five pages of hand drawn maps showing the routes of the ship an original play he wrote also some literary criticism comments on books authors very fond of Dickens ideas on writing and there is a section titled "Odd Jobs" thoughts and other ephemeral pieces such as a letter he received from Travel Magazine regarding a submission he sent them titled the "Mexican Church" using his pen name Arthur G. Shirt. Here are some more snippets: "There are a few ex-service men in the crew as evidenced by the remnants of the uniforms they used to wear. There is one lad who appears on deck with complete doughboy outfit with olive - drab shirt trousers and leggings. Dickens says in his preface to David Copperfield "But like many fond parents i have in my heart of hearts a favorite child. And his name is" David Copperfield "and David Copperfield has already become my favorite child of fiction. At present I am absolutely fascinated with the story and with the manner in which it is told. Characters were never so real as the characters surrounding David Copperfield: and i carry them In my mind and when i am on the bridge I reenact their doings and re-say their sayings. Thanksgiving Day 241919 SS W.S. Rheem We first saw the coast of Mexico in the early morning of last Sunday and shortly after seeing faint dim outline we were at anchor just inside the bar of Tampico awaiting a berth at the oil docks. Sparks and I went ashore after dinner Sunday noon. We hailed and were rowed ashore in a n extremely small boat propelled by a remarkably small boy and two immense oars. The combination was so ridiculous and was so unfair to the small boy that i was tempted to row myself but was dissuaded by the oil and grease about the working area of the craft. We waited at the station until two o'clock for the one - thirty train and set foot in Tampicos Mexico twenty miles later the stretch of county Penucos River between the ship at La Bana and the city is nothing but a mud flat and the this season of the year actively muddy the houses are built Malay style on stacks and the garden walk was a twelve inch plank also on stacks. The people we thought were as oily and as muddy as their city and river. They dress loosely with broad- rimmed Sombreros. Their shirts are tail - less and are not tucked in and their trousers rival a sailors in their ability to flap. If they have shoes they rarely wear them but instead a sandal affair bound about the foot in a careless manner. Our Bosun tells us of the visit of a Nicaraguan Admiral to an American Man -O - War. He wore broad cloth had gold stripes half way up his arms heavy gold epaulets: gold collar: bemedalled chest peaked cap and dangling sword a noble figure indeed - but from beneath the trim of his striped trousers there peeped ten ugly dirty toes- He was barefooted! There seems to be a preponderance of men in Tampico a great many urchins apparently uncared for - and what women there were were ugly- in my eyes at least. The young men I thought were attractive with their dark skin and hair and their flashing dark eyes. The policemen such as they were were disgraceful. We watched them line up at night and all though they were in military formation they were shelling peanuts and smoking cigarettes. I received one impression from exchanging glances with the Mexicans I passed and I left Tampico with that impression firmly in my mind: That these people are not to be trusted. The next night I was called upon to be the interpreter between the sailors and the Mexican customs official who came on board with the pilot and did not leave until we finally headed for sea. The bone of contention was that the sailors were bringing liquor aboard and the customs official did not approve of it. The sailors advanced several arguments and I realized than to the best of my ability to the Mexican he was obdurate and I had really given up the fight when he said drawing e aside "If you give me three dollars I will not see" The old Grafter after money eh I told the sailors what he wanted and let them to finish the deal which i learned later was arranged to the satisfaction of both parties. Feb.131919 SS WS Rheem At Tampico Mexico. Unusual excitement was occasioned this evening by the ugly disposition of the Mexican Customs Official He was dissatisfied with the bunk which the Steward had assigned to him and was in no way delicate about making his satisfaction known. The altercation came to climax when he official reinforced by three of his fiends form shore faced the Captain and demand better quarters. The Capt took the opportunity to inform the Customs Official that Harry Jensen was Captain of this ship. The manner in which Harry Jensen made this clear alarmed one of the friends and he pulled a gun." BIO NOTES: Arthur Gordon had a long career at sea. He would serve aboard the USS Oceanographer for four years on the US Coast Survey. Later after WW II he would write the book "The Years of Peril" the World War II story of Mobil men and ships by Arthur Gordon. Besides serving in WWI and WWII he traveled extensively as a Merchant Marine Officer and was employed in the tourist industry. After WWI Gordon made two trips around the world and into the Amazon. Gordon also attended Bard College and NYU finally earning a Master's degree. In 1949 he was teaching classes in writing fiction. He was listed as a Navy Commander in the reserves in 1949 as well. At that time his full time employment was as a Freelance Writer. He published short stories in Argosy and Maclean's Magazine sometimes using the pen name "Arthur Shirt". On offer is a superb original 1803 - 1805 manuscript cypher and navigation book handwritten by a young midshipman James Maurice Shipton aboard the noted HMS Thunderer a ship forever in the history books as the ship that spotted the emerging Spanish fleet and thusly began the Battle of Trafalgar and the demise of Britain's enemies and sadly the hero of the day Lord Horatio Nelson. Notably Thunderer also took part in the Glorious 1st of June Battle against the French in 1794. James Maurice Shipton who would one day captain his own ship and reap accolades created this book while theThunderer worked blockade duty along the French coast. Mere months later the ship would engage in the Battle of Trafalgar and the decisive engagement by the British would end the rule of the French despot and dictator Napoleon Bonaparte. Included are a number of letters from archivists and historians providing background info on Shipton. The book is in wonderful condition the vellum save for some soiling is better than good and the interior as well. ‎1845 ORIGINAL RIVETING DEPOSITIONS OF CAPTAIN AND CREW MEMBERS OF THE WHALING BARK ALTO OF NEW BEDFORD MASSACHUSETTS BESET BY LAWLESSNESS DESERTION AND MUTINY‎

‎Good. 1845. On offer is a sensational remarkable group of 1845 manuscript depositions detailing the mutinous activity and desertions during a voyage of the whaling Bark Alto between 1844 - 1845. The eyewitness testimonies are comprised of 37 pages or so of handwritten fair copies; five 5 complete and one 1 incomplete deposition all by various crew members the five complete copies each personally attested and signed at the conclusion by George William Gordon American Consul at Rio de Janeiro May 20 1845. Blunt facts display the ferocity of emotions and simmering violence provide snippets like 'Palmer said to deponent that . . . he would put one of those dirk knives into him' abound throughout the testimonies. The depositions paint a picture of unbridled upset on the ship: lawlessless violence suspicions of poisoning desertion and a final critical comment from nature itself: a calamitous lightning strike makes for a final exclamation point to the awful whaling voyage. The vessel at the center of the events described herein the Alto was built in Tiverton Rhode Island we note that research indicates the Alto was in fact the only such vessel ever built at Tiverton in 1826 and was lost near the Falkland Islands in 1870. The National Maritime Digital Library date the events related in the documents occurred during the Alto's fourth voyage under the direction of Captain Nehemiah West whose deposition is included and which lasted from September 1844 to April 1847. A successful voyage commercially as the records further note that the Alto collected 339 barrels of sperm oil 304 barrels of baleen oil and 2700 lbs. of whale bone. As a group the depositions--from the Captain First Second and Third Mates and two boat helmsmen paint a vivid often harrowing picture of a voyage fraught with tension and danger. Researchers and historians will note that at least two of the depositions document an ominous shipboard discussion of the earlier well-documented mutiny aboard the vessel Globe out of Nantucket which took place in 1827. While the general outline of the events remains consistent throughout each of the deponents provides a unique personal perspective on what transpired often with the addition of unexpected or surprising details omitted by the others. Virtually all of the crew involved are identified by name multiple times throughout the documents two however are repeatedly described only as "Portuguese". In broad overview complaints from crew members that the vessel is leaky and unseaworthy leads to refusal to perform duties; the captain administers punishment including placing crew members in irons and striking them with a piece of "rattling" ratline; a small group of crew desert with one of the boats but are caught and jailed at St. Jago Cape Verde and shipped back to the U.S. on the U.S. Sloop of War Decatur; after a few months of relative calm unrest breaks out again this time with threats of violence to fellow crew members with clubs and "dirk knives"; in the most dramatic event eleven crew members desert with the remaining two boats taking with them a large store of the whaling equipment. The Alto its crew and equipment drastically reduced suffers the final indignity of a lightning strike "breaking and splitting" the mainmast but is able to hobble into Rio de Janeiro where these eyewitness accounts were given to the American Consul and preserved in the present documents. Here is a snippet from the deposition of helmsman William Williams approx. 8 pages on two pairs of conjugate leaves: "William Williams . . . deposed as follows. . . . That he was born in the County of Essex in England is 29 years of age and a naturalized citizen of the United States was naturalized at Boston Mass. in July 1842. That he shipped on board the Barque 'Alto'--Nehemiah West Master at New Bedford in August 1844 as Boat steerer to proceed on a Whaling Voyage. That the Vessel sailed on the 3rd September following. That 14 or 15 days after the Vessel went out to sea all the foremost hands refused duty--alleging that the Vessel was leaky. On their refusing duty Captain West interrogated each of them separately and three of them returned to duty and eleven still refused and were sent below where they were kept about 48 hours. While the eleven men were below as aforesaid they experienced two very heavy squalls but none of said men offered to return to duty--but on the other hand made sport of them that were at work. After they had been below deck 24 hours the Master went forward and requested four of the men to come on deck. They refused to come unless all were allowed to some on deck at a time--and after a good many threats on the part of the men the Master told them that if the men he had called did not come on deck that he would have the forecastle smoked to force them out. Soon after four came on deck as the Master had directed and still refusing to go to duty on being called upon the deck and refusing duty were put in Irons and the others one being called upon deck and refusing duty were seized in the rigging there being no Irons to put upon them. That at New Bedford before sailing one of the men named Spencer who had shipped deserted and another man named Charles Shane came on board in his place--but Shane's name was not put on the Papers. That when the men were called up as aforesaid said Shane took the ground that his name was not upon the Shipping Paper and therefore he would not go to duty and obey the Master--upon which the Master gave him four blows with a piece of Rattling i.e. part of the ratline. George Ritter also who was supposed to be the instigator in the men's refusing duty and who was insolent to the Master also receive three strokes with the Rattling. Another man the steward named James Wilson also got three blows with the Rattling for insolence to the Captain. He said that he never was flogged on board of a Blubber Hunter although he had been on board of a Man of War. No others were flogged or punished in any way and they all returned to duty." ‎MONTANA OTTUMWA IOWA SHERIDAN COUNTY DAKOTA. Very Good. 1907. On offer is an original significant historic record of late 1800s and early 1900s pioneer and western life being the original handwritten manuscript diary of a fascinating and eclectic Montana pioneer whose many job titles included lawman judge Civil War veteran teacher miner and newspaper editor Samuel Dow Bollinger 1848 - 1917. The 3½ x 6 inch 40 page book begins in 1907 though much is retrospective with annual entries through 1917. The last two entries of 1917 seem to indicate he was ill and likely died about that time. The first page or so gives history of his parents who had come from Pennsylvania writing entries covering his birth through the rest of his life and a very interesting life and one uniquely reflective of the times in which he lived. In the early 1860s he worked for a couple newspapers in Ottumwa; The Courier and The Mercury from 1866 - 1869 Bollinger and he also served with the US Army in the Dakota Territory. After the army Bollinger headed to Missouri marries his first wife and then in 1880 he moves to Montana where he joins the Odd Fellows Lodge at Virginia City. He did some freighting work for the railroad became justice of the peace at Sheridan County. He details several accounts of criminals that he encountered. Later he became an itinerant teacher at several different locations. In 1889 he founded and published a newspaper at Pueblo Colorado called "The Pueblo Democrat" - he adds that his partner W.G. Jackson who "beat him out of his interest and then let the paper die" runs for Supt. of Schools in 1890; in 1894 he is in Cripple Creek doing some mining and also working with a newspaper and publishing the "Daily Crusher"- then back to Missouri and then back to Montana in 1898 as Justice of the Peace again in 1904 at Sheridan County and the in 1913 he goes to Arkansas where it appears his life ended. ‎LEIDEN HOLLAND THE NETHERLANDS. Good. 1849. On offer is the fascinating original 1849 through 1850s journal and letter copy book of the renowned Dutch instrument maker Julius Theodoor Leopold Hoefftcke. Born on 12 March 1800 in Berlin he moved to Leiden at age 26 and within two years he was appointed as the instrument maker of Leiden University. He supplied the academic world with instruments until his death in 1875. After which his grandson took over the company and moved to England. The book is a superb source for researchers and historians as a rare insight into the world of Dutch instrument making which was a growth industry and for which the Dutch were ferociously proud. This book contains all the financial agreements of Mr. Hoefftcke around 1850s to 1860s. For every individual borrowing the instruments or goods he noted how much should have been paid when it had to be paid and once paid he confirmed it in his book. From his letters one could conclude that he did not only loan out his goods but also sold them. The book shows that the financial agreements do not only limit themselves to the University of Leiden and in fact his instruments were shipped long distances. We note a letter shows that instruments were sent to J. Pohl who was an instrument maker located in the Hague since 1820. Besides the financial agreements there are also some formal letters to the clients and suppliers. Based on the letters one could say that some or perhaps all of the letters were just a written copy of an original letters. Many letters point out the author was German born as narrative is peppered with 'mit' and 'und' but most of this material dates about 25 years after he moved to the Netherlands so his Dutch is excellent and definitely understandable. ‎NEW YORK CITY NY. Fair. 1896. On offer is an original 20 page manuscript typed and handwritten by Joseph G.C. Cottier 1874-1897. Titled "The Expression Of The General Equations Of Hydrodynamics In Terms Of Curvilinear Coordinates" which relates to his work and intense study of the science of hydromechanics. Cottier had read and mastered nearly all of the extensive and profoundly difficult literature of this science which has occupied the attention of the most eminent mechanicians during the past two centuries and this work is part of the fruits of his research. From the personal papers of Robert Simpson Woodward 1849-1924 American physicist and mathematician born at Rochester Michigan. He graduated C.E. at the University of Michigan in 1872 and was appointed assistant engineer on the United States Lake Survey. In 1882 he became assistant astronomer for the United States Transit of Venus Commission. In 1884 he became astronomer to the United States Geological Survey serving until 1890 when he became assistant in the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. In 1893 he was called to Columbia as professor of mechanics and subsequently became professor of mathematical physics as well. He was dean of the faculty of pure science at Columbia from 1895 to 1905 when he became president of the Carnegie Institution of Washington whose reputation and usefulness as a means of furthering scientific research was widely extended under his direction. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1896. In 1898-1900 he was president of the American Mathematical Society and in 1900 president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1915 he was appointed to the Naval Consulting Board. He died in 1924 in Washington D.C. Professor Woodward carried on researches and published papers in many departments of astronomy geodesy and mechanics. In the course of his work with the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey he devised and constructed the "iced bar and long tape base apparatus" which enables a base line to be measured with greater accuracy and with less expense than by methods previously employed. His work on the composition and structure of the earth and the variation of latitude found expression in a number of valuable papers. Titled and signed on verso 20 pages 8 x 13". Soiled. BIO NOTES: Joseph G.C. Cottier 1874-1897 Cottier was a graduate student in Columbia during the academic years 1895-7. The exceptionally rapid progress he made justified the expectation that he would soon become an original investigator of the first order in the domains of mathematical physics. Joseph Germains Charles Cottier was born in Jersey City N. J. May 29 1874. He was graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology with the degree of mechanical engineer in 1894. During the following year he was employed in engineering work partly by the East River Gas Company of New York and partly by the Blake Pump Company. Although successful in this work it proved of little interest to him and he resolved to turn his attention to studies which would lead him to an academic career. Accordingly he applied for and was awarded a scholarship in Columbia University and he entered the School of Pure Science in the autumn of 1895. He chose mechanics as his major subject and mathematics and education as minors. At the end of the academic year 1895-6 he was appointed fellow in mechanics and received the degree of A.M. Continuing his studies with marked proficiency he was reappointed Fellow in Mechanics at the close of the year 18967 and he expected to complete the work required for the doctorate degree during the present academic year. He had made a special study of the science of hydromechanics. He had read and mastered nearly all of the extensive and profoundly difficult literature of this science which has occupied the attention of the most eminent mechanicians during the past two centuries. He had already begun to produce original work in this field; and on departing in July last for Europe he left for publication papers on the equations of hydrodynamics in a form suitable for application to problems connected with the movements of the earth's atmosphere and on the expression of the general equations of hydrodynamics in terms of curvilinear coordinates. The first of these papers has been published in vol. XXV of the Monthly Weather Review of the United States Weather Bureau and the second will be published in the Mathematical Review. Personally Mr. Cottier was an exceedingly unassuming man and modest almost to shyness with respect to his own attainments. Because of these characteristics and by reason of incessant occupation with his studies few of his associates and few even of his instructors came to know him intimately. The few to whom he became well known however held him in highest esteem as well for his singularly gentle and courteous manliness as for the penetrating clearness and strength of his intellectual capacity. It is fitting in this connection to state that Mr. Cottier's parents have given his collection of treatises and papers on the mathematico-physical sciences to the library of the Department of Mechanics. They have thus founded a permanent memorial of their son's devotion to science and have at the same time shown his and their appreciation of the fellowship honors which Columbia had twice bestowed upon him. written by Prof. Robert S. ‎1815 - 1820 ORIGINAL FASCINATING MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG POLITICALLY ENGAGED VIRULENTLY ANTI SLAVERY ENGLISHMAN TRAVELING IN POST WAR OF 1812 AMERICA SEEING SLAVERY FIRST-HAND MEETING THE VICE PRESIDENT AND WITNESSING CONGRESS‎

‎Good. 1815. On offer is a fascinating historically significant journal handwriten by Joel Cadbury on his journey to post War of 1812 America. The journal sees Cadbury travel from England to the United States travel south to Washington D.C. discussing many of the prescient questions of the early 1800s in America including seeing the U.S. Senate debate the 'Missouri Question'. He travels to Virginia where he sees and is disgusted with the state of slavery and African-Americans on plantations. He visits Mount Vernon and George Washington's tomb and meets by chance the Vice President of the United States Daniel D. Tompkins. While the cover of the journal says "Joel Cadbury's Account of his Voyages to and From American and from its shore from 1815 to 1820" the years of 1815 appear to have been cut out of the book. 4 pages are missing from the very beginning and the journal's first entry is in 1816. The journal begins with Cadbury's journey on the "Ship Mexico" that sailed from England to the United States. "2nd day 8 Mo. 1816. Being the second time we come on board there was a fair freeze but very little of it we got down as far as the Rock this day but the wind dying entirely away we were obliged to drop anchor to keep us from being run on the sands." Cadbury keeps details on what happened on the ship and the many other ships and people interacted with on the journey across the Atlantic. These ships include one heading from Liverpool to Savannah called "the Recovery from New Orleans Captain Barnard bound to Bordeaux she had on board the crew of a Spanish ship bound to Holland which they had taken off a wreck in distress." The ship lands in Sandy Hook New Jersey 'certainly well named for there is nothing but sand on which there are a few evergreens grown." Cadbury heads on horseback to Philadelphia where he meets with family. '…reached my uncle about 2 oclock found my cousins at dinner was exceeding kindly received by them.' The first long entry in the book ends with Cadbury speaking reflexively on his life and journey so far. The next entry 18 pages in length is entitled by Cadbury "A short account of an agreeable excursion taken to Muncy for 3 weeks from 15th of 7th Mo. to of the 8th Mo. 1817 to our Dear Fr'd Mercy Ellis's.' The longest section of the journal is next entitled 'An account of an excursion to the South from 1. Mo. 10 1820 to 2 Mo.' First he goes to Washington D.C. and requests his driver to take him "immediately to where congress was sitting in the finished wings of the Capitol." He then remarks that "the center building tis supposed will be finished and will be one of the most splendid buildings in America." He is referring to the Capitol building which was burned down in the War of 1812 and for which was being reconstructed had started in 1815 and which was continuing when Cadbury sees it in 1820. He writes "you will find us in the Gallery of the Senate been very desirous to hear everything we can on the Missouri Questions…not only of great importance but also on account of the results which may issue from any decision on the subject." The Missouri Question he speaks of is the furious debate going on the congress as to whether the state of Missouri should be admitted to the United States as a slave owning state or one in which slavery was abolished. The "Missouri Compromise" ratified in early May 1820 provided for the admission of the District of Maine as a 'free state' and Missouri as a 'slave state' so as not to disturb the power balance between free and slave states. He writes "The Missouri demand on admission into the Union is justified in doing it by the laws of the US the question this is shall she be admitted while her state laws admit for slavery." Though England still had slavery by the time Cadbury was writing he is obviously a virulent abolitionist writing "The inhuman traffic in negroes one party contended tis not constitutions to cripple her in any point while the other say admit her not to join a free congress with slavery in her bosom. She herself demands a curse a yoke which will one day grind her to the dust how blind then are men to their own real interested… Strange infatuation murdering their own feelings and intending to murder those of generations unborn for ages to com." Cadbury predicts the a U.S. Civil War writing "Some day if she is not admitted it may cause a division of the States woe to this happy land when this does not take place." He spends much of the time in his journey to the South commenting on the sugar rice and cotton plantations that he sees and the misery that he witnesses in the slaves who work the plantations. "Permit me to copy the following advertisement which was the first thing that struck my eye in turning over a paper in the tavern we are now in: Negroes for Sale The Subscriber offers for sale a bargain 1 Colored Women 28 years 1 colored girl 8 years 1 Colored boy child 7." After this page 3 pages from this section have been cut out. Cadbury "accompanied by James on horse or rather on ponyback and J on horseback" travels to Mount Vernon "Once the residence and now the resting place of the Bones of the General Washington" near Alexandria Virginia. He describes the home and gardens in great detail and visits Washington's tomb. From there Cadbury travels back to Washington D.C. visits the Patent Office "which is really a great curiosity." He visits the House of Representatives and "there with wonder I surveyed the objects which surrounded me with an astonishment called forth by the grandeur which appeared in the inside decorations." The section ends with Cadbury meeting the Vice President of the United States "at the first place I stopped." At the time in 1820 the V.P. was Daniel D. Tompkins who was serving under James Monroe. In the next section Cadbury heads back to England on the Ship Bourier. The section is 20 pages long and accounts the trip back to Cadbury's home in Liverpool. Cadbury spends much of the section reminiscing about the United States and England and its people as well as speaking often about the weather and the speed of the ship. He returns home to a Liverpool that 'looks dark dirty and gloomy…every thing appeared very different to what I had anticipated - the houses looked high the Bricks very dark coloured.' The final section a short 11 pages is the 'Journal of my second voyage to the United States in the Ship Lancaster Burkhart for Philadelphia - Sailed the 4th day of Second Month 1821. On this journey he is 'accompanied by my kind & affectionate brother Bevy. This section is written in much less detail than the others. It recounts Cadbury and his brother's trip back to Philadelphia to see their uncle and cousins. 3 pages have been cut off the middle. the section ends abruptly with the brothers still on the ship to America. ‎ABOARD THE AMERICAN SHIP CONQUEROR. Very Good. 1897. On offer is a sensational original late 19th Century handwritten manuscript relic of the noted American Ship 'Conqueror' being a 126 page journal of a New York to Sydney New South Wales voyage from March 4th 1897 through June 22nd 1897. The unidentified writer does a super job on the narrative the first month or so but maintains course and weather information throughout the voyage and then some more personal narrative and observations a few weeks before landfall. And while the writer is unknown we can state the person was a passenger not crew but a passenger of some experience aboard a ocean going vessel with some ease at nautical terms and descriptions. The voyage was one of import to the writer and his descendents as the book was recently professionally rebound in beautiful wood covers calf on the spine and a sparkling gilt title to the spine. On offer is a super very interesting April 1856 - December 1858 manuscript diary and relic of the post Crimean War travels and duties of the Royal Wiltshire Regiment handwritten by Lieutenant Thomas Edward Pinkett. Lt. Pinkett he makes captain in 1862 does a super job as a diarist providing 242 pages of personal narrative and a significant historical record with many references: named soldiers visitors daily duties and for example lists of destinations over the 3 year period of troop and ship movements; there is even a list tucked in from 1857 - 1860 of Regiments who dined with the Royal Wilts including the 4th Light Dragoons the Middlesex 2nd Cheshire North Lincoln The Roscommon The 12th and the Stafford. ‎1943 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF ONE BRITISH GUNNER'S MISERABLE 6 MONTHS IN DIEGO SUAREZ MADAGASCAR‎

‎DIEGO SUAREZ MADAGASCAR INDIAN OCEAN. Good. 1943. On offer is a super original manuscript diary and World War II relic of one British man's unwelcome service as a Gunner for His Majesty's Army in the East Africa Command. Handwritten by Gunner C.J. Wallace O.F.C. Ordnance Factory 1612928 while serving in Diego Suarez Madagascar the diary is kept in a small notebook and very neatly covers the six month period from January 1st 1943 four days before they embark by ship for Madagascar to June 30th at which point it ends because the book is full at 120 well filled pages. Madagascar was prior to early 1942 a French colony and Churchill feared that Vichy France would allow the Japanese to use the island as a base for operations in the Indian Ocean. This fear led to a British and Allied offensive in the spring of 1942 which successfully led to the invasion of the island. Wallace of the 152 E.A.H.A.A. Battery 152 East Africa Heavy Anti Aircraft Battery was part of the East Africa Brigade based at the most important harbour Diego Suarez on the northern tip of the island and part of the all important defenses of Britain's strengthening hold of the area. He served as part of heavy artillery crew whose job was to defend against enemy aircraft or shipping. During the period of the diary there is little action save for a couple of times enemy aircraft flew over Diego Suarez and at one point there is concern over a ship sighted offshore but this proves not to be an enemy craft. The only "action" involves local people accidentally wounded during a training exercise. The diary does a superb job relating the day-to-day grind of an overseas posting. You get a real sense of the relentlessness of it all and it reflects the joyless powerless day-to-day experience of many young conscripts. The writer is bored homesick and miserable. He and his comrades are often ill with diarrhoea or malaria. There is a constant low level grumbling: the weather; the filth the squalor of the local town the privations of the accommodation the poor food the failure of the army to keep his pay up to date the poor transport infrastructure the behaviour of the natives the behaviour of the officers and - most of all - the constant pointless emphasis on petty regulation and "spit and polish". There are numerous passages in the diary which could illustrate this. Here is a snippet: 'We had to change our beds today for three planks of wood everybody must have the same even if you were nice and comfortable before. Just like our battery. I suspect it's all Godfrey's doings even if you have your own camp bed when the day comes for inspection you have to hide it and show three planks with kit on.' Several times the author writes simply and rather movingly that he just wishes he could go home to his wife Joan whom he misses greatly. The only high points are the regular games of football listening to the wireless when it works and a two week leave period at the town of Joffreville in a converted sawmill established to enable soldiers to request and recuperate. In June a brothel "licensed by army medical authorities" with "white and almost white girls" opened in Diego Suarez for the use of officers. The writer hears rumours that a brothel for other ranks will follow with "girls from Kenya" but he finds this an appalling prospect. The diary is a small notebook with 104 pages all of which are fully written on. There are no missing or damaged pages but the covers are detached from the single staple which holds the notebook together. Tucked in the diary is an abandoned draft of a letter from the author to his wife in south London plus a couple of simple rhyming poems in which the writer expresses his cynicism about the army life. ‎1868 - 1872 ORIGINAL SHIP'S LOG AND CAPTAIN'S DIARY WHO LIVES A ROLLICKING SEA FARING LIFE BUT PINES FOR HIS CARRIE‎

‎New Bedford Massachusetts MA. Good. 1868. On offer is a sensational original post Civil War era 1868 - 1872 Captain's log book and journal handwritten by Massachusetts mariner George Sylvester Chase 1833-1877. Born and raised in the Cape Cod town of Yarmouth later to New Bedford his registration for the 1863 Civil War draft listed his occupation as a "mariner at sea whaling" with the 1870 census shows him "at sea" and living in New Bedford. Their family was well noted in Deyo's History of Barnstable County as his father was the noted Cape Cod Baptist minister Enoch E. Chase 1804-1887. Captain Chase at age 35 would have been considered an old salt by anyone's opinion who holds naval and maritime history in high regard and those reading this log would not be disappointed. There are shades of Forester and Conrad on nearly every page. His various ships included the "Volunteer" "Ericsson" and "Regent" and immediately from the first pages we encounter high drama on the seas: "my first officer.informed me that a boat was laying off the ship and when he hailed the boat the reply he received was go to hell.I told them not to come too near. They call me a few hard names and a damned Cape Cod man and fired six shots at the ship." Given this is during post war peace it comes as an eye opening entry. The 12.5" x 8.5" folio has 100 pages or so and besides Chase's trials and travails at sea he always has his heart in New Bedford often entries in the manner of a diary addressed to his wife "Carrie" whom he greatly misses. At one point he expresses hope she will join him on the next voyage so that he might reap the benefits of her "superior mind" while at sea. Other entries include the description of a fight aboard ship involving a crew member who drew a knife while threatening to kill everyone in sight a crew member who fell overboard in "very heavy seas.and it would have been impossible to have lowered a boat" etc. Entries adding much depth to this book include heartfelt verse much addressed to his wife or a cousin sometimes for himself as creative outlet on long sea voyages. A fair bit of the son of a Baptist preacher peeks out from the page throughout his writings. And of course as with any ship's book he records the typical data any sailor would note such as position weather and any and all nautical observations. The book has some cover wear and some pages are loose but all accounted for and legible. On offer is an absolutely super archive and significant historical group of typed and manuscript papers mostly original copies pertaining to official Navy memos and documents relating to the education received by Lieutenant Alexander C. Brown C-VS USNR of Alexandria Virginia at the newly created and opened July 1st 1942 Harvard Naval Training School. We note: There is a fascinating and very strong likelihood this Lt. Brown could very well be renowned and prolific author Alexander Crosby Brown of Maryland maritime tales and non fiction but we cannot make the final connection. This group is significant on a number of levels. While the earliest date we find in a document dated September 1942 titled Memo 48. Most of the other materials likely come before that date and thusly this archive reveals the very complex education in radio engineering and foreign intelligence as evidenced by a portion of the papers called Correspondence Course in Foreign Intelligence with other sections headed Codes and Ciphers Tactics Radio Engineering Charts and even a Hints to Newcomers memo. The papers are all loose with hints of having once been in binders or duo tangs thusly we cannot attest to whether the 3 inch stack of papers is complete though it does appear very comprehensive. ‎SOUTHERN ENGLAND GREAT BRITAIN. Good. 1890. On offer is a super original manuscript relic of travel through England on its inland waterways and canals as handwritten by the intrepid author "Rutland Bleign" but really unidentified as it seems a pseudonym who is travelling with his friend and illustrator the brace working to publish the as titled book: "In Tow: The Chronicle of a Cruise in a Monkey Boat." Written from August 6th through the 28th in 1890 he leaves off the year but some sleuthing concluded definitely the year as stated the manuscript which appears unpublished details the three week cruise on the historic canals of Southern England at the perfect time for historians and researchers of canal travel as in 1890 while some were in peak years of usage while others beginning to see the inevitable decline due to increased railway service. Rutland is an erudite witty raconteur in this travel account. Here are some snippets: ". after a ramble round the town I took our permit to the Canal Office to be initialled in due form and had a chat with the agent Mr. White. returning to our boat. I found a very serious gentleman with a pencil and notebook in hand. announced himself as the Canal-Boat-Inspector-for-the-Newbury-District-under-the- Local-Government-Board. he wanted to know how much women children and other livestock were onboard. if any of us were subject to hydrophobia Asiatic cholera smallpox or other little ailments of that sort. the blue books had already told me; but then as its owners the G.W.R. Great Western Railway get the traffic which it would otherwise take it seems to be merely a transference from one pocket to the other. No doubt the Railway people would close the Cut tomorrow if their powers allowed them which fortunately for us easy-going folk who infinitely prefer their water- to their iron-way is not the case." "The canal closing Sunday rule is absolutely stringent it appears and even a party of G.W.R. officials Great Western Railway who came down the canal for a weekend 'trip' were not allowed to infringe it. As the pleasure traffic begins to feel its way along these hitherto almost unknown waters this regulation will naturally become more & more irksome and will probably be relaxed eventually."
