‎1870 - 1875 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG CENTRAL WISCONSIN FARMER WHO CHRONICLES THE TOILING AND TIMES OF A RURAL LIFE IN AMERICA'S DAIRYLAND‎

‎TOMAH WISCONSIN. Good. 1870. On offer is an excellent detailed record of farming in the US mid-west in the later 19th century. This diary is absolutely full of minute detail of farming life over a nearly 5 year period from 1870 to 1875. Written in central Wisconsin the diary is in very good condition. It measures 5 1/2 inches by 3 3/4 inches and has 120 undated pages and the diary is 100% complete. The handwriting is very good and quite legible. John Robertson is a young farmer living near the community of Tomah WI. Along with working his own farm he helps his father on the family farm as well as various neighbours. Entries take the form of essentially 1-line comments about the principal activitys of the day. They begin in October 1870 and extend to May 1875. Mostly they detail the unending tasks necessary to keep a farm running: "Drawed stone firewood chopped wood for father" Mar 25 1870; "I dragged 1/2 day . sowed wheat at grs grandfathers" Apr 17 1870; "Cut some of fathers oats David I raked up and bound my oats 3/4 day . "Aug4 1870. Life followed seasons with land being prepared crops sown and tended to harvests completed. Wood had to be chopped fences mended tools and implements repaired etc: "I went to woods for steer. Got it" Dec 5 1870; "Fixed my Sleigh" Dec8 1870. He notes local events of importance: "Went to town for election" Apr 4 1871; "Went to town. Election" Mar 7 1874. Social events are noted such as when he made arrangements for a barn-raising bee at his farm: "Had my Bee. Had 48 hands helped me had dance at night" May 26 1874. He notes his wedding to Maggie McMullins: "Went to Joe McMullins all of us My wedding got Married at Night" Jan 1 1875. This is an excellent chronicle of daily life on a mid-western farm during the 1870's. For a historian examining rural life at that time it is rich in specific facts and information. ‎1893 - 1920s FASCINATING ORIGINAL PAIR 2 OF MANUSCRIPT DIARIES DETAILING A SOMERVILLE MASSACHUSETTS MAN'S LIFE OVER A 43 YEAR SPAN‎

‎SOMERVILLE MASSACHUSETTS. Fair. 1893. On offer is a most unusual and interesting pair of journals. They date from 1893 and 1896 respectively. They measure 8 inches by 4 1/4 inches and contain 184 pages. The binding of one journal is quite worn and the 2nd is almost detached. Many of the pages in the first journal are loose but all are accounted for. The writing is quite legible. The author's name is Frank. From context we know that he was born in 1873. He lives in Somerville MA. The journals are interesting as they are essentially snap shots of his life taken at different times between 1893 and 1926. The first covers that entire period. The 2nd volume has several entries dated Dec 27 and 31 1899 and Jan 1st 1900 and Mar 14th 1900. The first volume is the most detailed. It begins with him taking a train trip west to visit the Chicago World Fair. He describes his journey west in some cases with simple pencil sketches accompanying his notes. "Grazing country hop growing flock of sheep looking for their lake . Lake Ontario 10:20 Chicago World Fair. After a fine night sleep I am about to go to breakfast will communicate further during the day being the first real day at the Fair" June 6 1893. "Figures in Chocolate solid weight of Venus de Milo" 14:50 Sousa Band electrical illumination Torches on Building" He states on June 7th that he is finished with the Fair. But subsequent entries showed that he stayed a few extra days. He notes the places that he stops on his return trip as well such as Hamilton ON and Buffalo NY He doesn't actually state when he arrives home - the entries simply cease. The next entries are in 1896: "After three years it is very interesting to look over the foregoing . my notes strike me as childish and not noteworthy" Dec 10 1896. During this section of his journal he bemoans his being unemployed and describes his pain at the death of his father. It is a very difficult time for him personally and the reader can feel his sense of loss and depression. He reflects on the time passed: "We are on the eve of moving our household back to Somerville back to the homestead. Our funds have sunken low - some paintings are on the market and furniture has been sold and I - the only son and who should be the mainstay of the family - I am out of work!" The next entries skip ahead three years. "This now nearly three years since I have seen this book and many changes have taken place in that time. They are changes which have influenced my entire life and to judge from the present outlook the influence has been the reverse to what it should be Sept 30 1899. He does finally find work: "In six days I shall start for the West. I go for the Contractors Plant Co. And to sell the Portable Gravity Concrete Mixer." Dec 20 1899 He is optimistic although he does lament not having someone in his life to love. He makes no more entries for 5 years. "Not quite 5 years since I've wrote here. Great have been the changes! . I have a daughter now five weeks old and as happy a Godsend as one could wish! . All happy and contented. My affairs are in good shape and full of better promise." Aug 23 1904 He notes that he now owns his own home and his own belongings. He writes optimistically of the future. The next entry is 16 years later. He notes that he found the journal when he was unpacking boxes after a move. There has been illness and he has been in the hospital while his son was bed-ridden with a serious kidney ailment. ". We shall pull him through with God's help" Mar 30 1920. Six years later he comes back to the journal. He notes that his son recovered and is quite healthy. However his wife suffers from unexplained nerve pain. He talks about being fortunate: ". We are fortunate in the worlds goods because we have more than we need and some of the luxury is ours. We have a Cape Cod house which we all enjoy. ." May 31 1926. He takes real pleasure in his son and daughter and sees the future with optimism. His last entry is in October 1926. He expresses concern for their economic future: "A new note enters into our lives. The matter of business causes worry as it slips down and down . I should like ten years more of full earning power. ." Oct 15 1926. Three years later at age 56 he along with millions of Americans will be plunged into the depths of the Great Depression. For a historian taking a long view this is a fascinating look into the mind of a young man as he grows and grapples with the challenges of building a life for himself. He came of age during the Panic of 1896 when the economy crashed taking with it hundreds of banks and thousands of businesses. He struggles through this crisis and builds a successful life. ‎1897 - 1898 & 1899 ORIGINAL TRIO 3 OF MANUSCRIPT DIARIES HANDWRITTEN OF TWO 2 MASSACHUSETTS SISTERS FILLED WITH COMINGS GOINGS AND DOINGS OF A POPULAR PAIR OF YOUNG LADIES‎

‎BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS WILMINGTON. Good. 1897. On offer are a rare collection of three family diaries dating from the late 19th century. Belonging to two sisters the diaries offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of 2 middle-class young women at the turn of the century in Boston MA. The group of the two diaries 1897 & 1898 measures 5 inches by 3 inches. The first contains 181 pages and the second 365 pages each plus memoranda and are approximately 95% and 75% complete respectively. The third diary 1899 measures 3.25 inches by 2.25 inches and contains 365 pages. It is approximately 85% complete. The 1897 diary shows wear on the cover but it is intact as are all pages within. The other two diaries are in good condition as well. Also included is an envelope containing ephemera dating back to 1859. Many of these small items provide a wealth of information. These diaries belong to Josephine and Shirley Cornell. They lived in Wilmington north of Boston MA. Two of them belonged to 18 year old Josephine Cornell. Josephine's diaries cover the years 1897 and 1898. The third diary from 1899 is written by Josephine's sister Shirley M. Cornell. Their father is Henry Lyman Cornell a music teacher and their mother was Harriet S. W. Cornell. They had an older brother Worthington Cornell and three younger siblings - France Henry Jr. and Katherine. Josephine eventually married to Joseph Robert Hodgson on October 31st. 1905. The family also lived in Malden and Medford Massachusetts. She passed away 1960. The diaries are replete with the happenings that fill a young woman's life. There are references to family incidents such as their father breaking his leg after being thrown out of a buggy dancing school many trips to Boston balls buggy rides vacations music lessons at the conservatory and much much more. The diaries open with this: "Last night I went to a New Year's party and didn't get home till 12:15 at which time I was 18 years old. Today papa and mama gave me a ring with a lovely garnet in it and ma gave me a fine big bible and this diary. G. Peck sent me a fancy calendar in the mail and F. Roberts a 1 lb box of Hugler's." Jan1 1897 "They had the sleigh party tonight. Abner took Shirley. They had six horses. There were only 23 went and they had to pay 55 cents a piece. They went to Watertown where they got out and had hot chocolate and got home about 11. I didn't go. Feb 5 1897. She notes William McKinley's inauguration which was the first inauguration ever to be filmed: "McKinley's inauguration day. Fair. I went over to L. this morning and again this afternoon. George is home today sick. There was a big explosion in the subway of Tremont of Boston. 10 killed 50 injured. Mrs. Root was in a store opposite. All the windows along the street smashed." Mar 6 1897. She notes her sister Lill's birthday May 5th a summer boat trip July 21st and her sister Shirley visiting the USS Constitution in Boston Harbor. Sept 25 The autumn is taken up with many social events. 1898 continues with her social swirl: "Ma has been making over an Indian Muslin that Rose H. gave me. It is awful pretty. All embroidered. I wore it tonight to the "Officers Party" with Harvey. I danced every dance but last and had a lovely time. We came down in a hack at 6 o'clock. This year Jack H. was Major. He was influenced to take Ruth the daughter. My cousin Harris was an Ex Major yes!" Feb 18 1898. In April the reader is introduced to someone who will come to play a large role in her life. Her friend Lill had brought a friend of hers over to visit a few times - Jack Hodgson. On April 19th he is accompanied by his brother Joseph. Josephine and Joe will marry eight years later. "Most all the cyclists have gone to Concord. I went to ride all around Malden. Lill for Fred and S. went to Lill's and played cards. Rained all afternoon. Joe and Jack Hodgson and Lill came over in evening. G. Peck asked me to go to ride Saturday." Apr. 19 1898. She was not unaware of larger events going on: "Hurried up to Park St. from which at 7 this morning to see the Lawrence Light Guards depart for Gloucester. Big crowd. N. H. L. Cadets escorted them to the station. . May 24 1898. The Lawrence Light Guard was a militia unit from the immediate area that was leaving to fight in the Spanish American War that had broken out in April of that year. She notes the fall of Santiago de Cuba to American troops miss-identifying it as Saratoga: ". Saratoga fallen. Capture of Spanish fleet. War seems going on all this time and I've written nothing about it. Oh my." July 12 1898. The third diary belongs to her sister Shirley. It covers the year 1899. Again it takes the form of a chatty recollection of comings and goings with friends and social events. "President McKinley is making a visit to Boston and France and I went in town to see him on his arrival. We also saw plainly Delong Alger Gov. Wolcott Maj. Quincy Sec. Gage etc. Went to a whist party over to the Misses Robinson's" Feb 16 1899. Tonight came of the final ball which should have closed the dancing school but five more lessons are to be given. Harry came out with W. to go and stay over night. Mattie Tarbell and Mr. Wright also passed the night. I went to bed 1:50. Danced every one but one. Mar 10 1999 Her entries stopped in September. Accompanying the diaries is a small envelope containing about 2 dozen assorted newspaper clippings announcements calling cards and photographs. These however date much earlier - generally late 1850's to early 1860's. There is no explanation as to why they were part of the diaries and there does not seem to be an obvious family connection to the Cornells. A small placard announces Wood's Minstrels playing at the Athenaeum in South Boston on Thursday September 8 1859. Among its featured presentations are The Patriotic Darkey and Darkies on the Levee. There is a captioned undated photograph of Libby Prison. Libby Prison was an infamous Confederate prison at Richmond Virginia during the American Civil War. It gained a notorious reputation for the overcrowded and harsh conditions under which officer prisoners from the Union Army were kept. A newspaper clipping lists ships that have arrived in Boston harbor from all over the world. Included in the listing is the ship's name her owners and from where she was sailing. A historian would find this a rich collection of information. There is a great deal of small detail as well as a wider perspective of life at the end of the 19th century. The sisters reference many people by their full names which makes this an excellent genealogical reference tool. ‎1908 - 1911 ORIGINAL CHATTY MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY AN ERIE PENNSYLVANIA WOMAN WHO DOES A GREAT JOB DETAILING HER LIFE AND LOCAL EVENTS‎

‎ERIE PENNSYLVANIA. Fair. 1908. On offer is a chatty diary covering parts of 1908 1909 1910 and 1911. No one year is complete and entries often skip days or weeks. The front cover is missing and the back cover is only very loosely attached. The pages are sewn together. The righting is clear and legible. The writer lives in Erie PA an industrial manufacturing city that was a key link in the iron and steel industry on the Great Lakes. From context the writer appears to be a woman living with her husband and family. Her second entry notes the arrival of the 8 hour work day for telegraphers. The tone is chatty and entries include references to business personal and social life events: "The Erie strike has been declared settled and this is the day the old machinists were to return to work but none of them did. Dr. Burdette's class met tonight. Paul Huff has been taking treatment for increasing his speed in running a typewriter. This is Shrove Tues. Pancake social at Christ Church parish house this evening" Mar 3 1908. The entry for Saturday Nov 20th 1909 is typical of the talkative stream-of consciousness style of writing employed: "This was a fair day but not much sunshine. Didn't work this afternoon but Charlie and Lewie went back. In the afternoon I did a little varnishing work . using FW Devoe and Co's Oil Dark Oak Stain . the gasman came and read the meter .Esther went to the matinee of the Chicago Stock 'Genesee of the Hills' . Ma got a new hat today . we had cornmeal pancakes for supper . there were no turkeys on sale at the market . Dr. William H Crawford president of Allegheny College arrived from Europe this morning to straighten out the financial affairs of the College . Mr. Crawford will return to Rome in a short while to join his family who are spending the winter in that city . James Braggs was promoted from assistant baggagemaster to baggagemaster at the Erie station .the annual bazaar of Zion Church was held . mother and Mrs. Huff went to this sale and bought some german cookies ." Nov 20 1909. And so it goes. Factual event thoughts and gossip fill the pages: "The engagement of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. to Elinor Alexander of New York was announced several days ago. Mrs. Roosevelt has left for Africa with her daughter to meet her husband and return with him to the United States. ." Feb 15 1910. "Over half of the employees of the Pennsylvania Rapid Transit Co of that city have gone out on strike and several small riots occurred . " Feb 21. The entries end as abruptly as they began with an entry in July 1911: "Mrs Glancy made her usual appearance this morning. The price or cotton and cotton fabric has risen considerable of late and the reason is that a cotton trust has been originated" July 10 1911. ‎1903 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY A LOVELY UPSTATE NEW YORK WOMAN‎

‎EVANS MILLS NEW YORK WATERTOWN. Good. 1903. On offer is a delightful diary of 18 yr old Grace Merritt of Evans Mills NY a small village in upstate NY just south of the St. Lawrence River. The cover has come loose but the binding of all of the pages is intact. The handwriting is clear and legible. The diary measures approximately 8 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches. It covers the period from January 1 1903 until July 25 1903. While most entries are short there are several that extend over more than a page. Grace's mother had passed away years earlier and she had assumed the role of homemaker for her father and younger sister Nina. The diary is replete with references to daily life and community happenings. ". Henry Drake and Mr. Kinney helped pa butcher today". Jan 16. ". Been to work all day at the meat and lard." Jan 19. ". Worked nearly all the A.M. Went down to Mrs. Kinney's in the afternoon and carried home the sausage cutter and a piece of spare rib". Jan 28. "Not a very pleasant day. I hung out the clothes to dry moped the floor and done all the other work and Nina helped do some of the work. Papa went to the village. Nina went up to Mrs. Bakers but did not go in and came back and staid to Jessie's the rest of the P.M. Nina and I went down to the I. O. G. T. We had a big time. We took in 2 new members. The Companions had a Sugar Social and invited the Foresters but papa did not go" Mar 28 . "Pa ployed ploughed part of the day. Bertha Lyons came down before we had breakfast to go with Nina to school. Papa helped Mr. Drake get off a rut hole out here. Nina took down 1 1/2 dozen eggs at $1.50/doz." Apr 15. Also included in the diary are several other items. Two postcards confirm the community - Evans Mills and her father's name - William. There is a label of Lincoln brand preserves in good condition. There is also a damaged cover of a poetry book titled Harvest of Thorns. Another interesting insert of a pamphlet titled How To Become A Member Of The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Accompanying it is a handwritten note dated June 14 1927 twenty five years after this diary was written in which Grace asks for application forms. Of note is that it is signed Grace Messina. Grace married in May 1918. There are a great many references to local people and this would be an excellent reference point for someone doing research on local families in Jefferson County NY. It is an excellent reference for gender studies as it shows clearly the day-to-day lifestyle and expectations on a young woman at the turn of the century in rural America. A social historian would find the diary a treasure trove of details among the web of relationships in this small community. ‎LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA. Fair. 1910. On offer is a pair of leather bound diaries written by Marian I Purcell. The diaries cover parts of 1910 1913 1914 and 1915. This first diary is a small leather-bound notebook measuring 6 inches by 3 1/2 inches. It is in fair condition. It covers the period Sept 16 1913 to Sept 14 1915. The bulk of the entries are in the last half of 1914. Marian Purcell was born Sept 16 1892 in Fort Wayne IN where she lived until she was 17. The first book covers the period July 19 1910 to Jan 6 1911 but there are many gaps in entries. They are typical of a teenage girl of the time. They note essentially social interactions with friends and family. "Slept till quite late . fooled around all day" July 19 1910. "Delight A and her mother were over in A.M. and P.M. …just fooled around in eve went over to Tad Werner and Charlie called over We went to " July 28 1910. Just laid around all day in eve ma and pa and I all went walking in late" Aug 21 1910 She notes on Oct 1 1910 that her family is moving to Los Angeles CA. She makes it very clear that she does not want to move: "Left . for California hated to come" Oct 1. The second book is a 5-year diary. However the entries do not cover all of the time period. Entries begin in Sept 1913. In the Memoranda section she notes: "Went to Business College to learn shorthand from April-14-13 - June 14-1913". Although here are frequent gaps there is enough information to know when she was married her husband's name some addresses where they lived and what type of work she did. She married William L Harris June 18th 1914. They note that she worked in an office likely the Los Angeles Herald Examiner which was a major Los Angeles daily newspaper of the time. There are numerous references in 1913 about . at the office . On May 2nd 1914 she notes: "Quit work at Examiner to get ready to be married" May 2 1914. There are no further references to her working. Subsequent entries focus on interactions with friends and social events. It appears she never worked again outside of her home. There are no references to children or other family members although some of the named individuals may well be related There are no references to outside events and she seems very focused on her own life and experiences. "At office all day. In eve went to see "The Quaker Girl". It was fine". Sept 14 1913. "To the office. Did not come back for afternoon. In eve stayed home" Nov 18 1913 "Payday Gribbeu's were over Velma Billy and I went to picture show & Porters" Nov 26 1913. "My wedding day. The day of my life. Married at 8:00 in evening by Deacon Mac Cormack on roof gardens of the Pickwick Left that night stayed at the left the next A.M. for Catalina" June 18 1914. The last entry was made in August 1915: "Stayed home all day - in eve was home ." Aug 9 1915. Additionally there are newspaper clippings mostly referring to her wedding several photographs that appear to be of her and her new husband and several post cards. There is also a copy of her formal wedding invitation. These two diaries give a look into the life of a young woman in the early years of the 20th century. ‎OLCOTT NEW YORK. Good. 1910. On offer is an excellent record of farm operations in upstate New York immediately prior to WWI. Measuring 6 inches by 3 inches the leather-bound volume is in very good condition and contains 368 pages including Memoranda. It is 100% complete. The handwriting is neat and legible. Glenn Folger was a young man who worked on his family's fruit farm near Olcott NY. Informal research suggests that he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1904. Subsequently he returned to Olcott to work on the family farm. The daily entries are generally focused on the weather conditions and the tasks carried out that day. Although there is a general routine to daily and seasonal farm tasks taken as a whole across the entire year the journal gives a very detailed and full description of the operations of this family farm. "Went after two Jersey heifers at Mr. F.R. Wheeler's Farm . built manger for cattle in east-closed shed . sawed and split wood . Sam Lockwood and I measured off line of our farm from road to Lake on which we expect to place our Windsor cherry trees . NYC Station at Burt Burned this morning" Jan 24. "Finished drawing car of manure from Burt. Finished cutting cornstalks this afternoon" Feb 4. "Finished drawing and burning brush from #1-NP. Began removal of brush from #2 NP. Sold hand spray rig to Sam Lockwood and he got it this morning. Led 'Topsy' to Tompkins. Dragged the road to dry it off. Wayne and I drove to Olcott and Burt tonight. Confirmed rumour that Mr. Burt Van Horn has sold his place and cold storage to W.O. and H.W. Davis of New York for $125000". Mar 26 Through the year his journal records caring for livestock cattle pigs etc. planting and harvesting vegetables asparagus corn cabbage and potatoes and the management of orchards of apples cherries peaches and plums - the main focus of the farm. Along with these he notes the on-going maintenance of the farm - building repairs irrigation maintenance and the myriad other tasks necessary to keep the farm successful. His journal includes many local references such as Wilson Burt Newfane all small villages in the immediate area as well as places further afield - Buffalo New York City. In September he notes: ". I went up to the school and made a contract with Miss Carrigan to be teacher" Sept 13. However there is no further record of him taking up those duties. There are frequent references to a woman named 'Gerry' and on December 24 they became engaged. He later returned to University and earned a law degree. He was admitted to the New York State Bar and opened a legal practice in Poughkeepsie NY. He was the founding President of the Rombout Hunt Club which is still in existence today. For a historian especially one focused on rural American life this is a fine journal that presents an excellent portrait of a family farm at the turn of the last century. The author is well-educated and writes clearly and well. On offer is a diary that provides a fascinating look into the life of a 41 year old woman who works in service to an English family immediately following WWI The notebook is in very good condition and the entries are quite legible. It measures 8 in by 6 1/2 in and contains 141 pages. It is 100% complete. It covers the time period Jan 1st 1919 until Oct 24th 1921. Two to three entries are made each week. Church life plays a very important role and virtually every entry contains quotes from scripture or references to going to church services quite regularly. There is little reference to her daily tasks other than passing remarks about going shopping or having a difficult day with a child. Most geographical references are to locations in Cornwall UK. 'Wingfield' is frequently referenced as home and it was located on the edge of Plymouth. This is confirmed by numerous references to 'the Hoe' a large open space in Plymouth. She has a very active social life with a small group of friends and daily rounds of meeting for tea going bathing swimming together and long walks comprise much of her entries. There is little reference to events in the outside world. ". Went down and walked along the sands sat on high rock after and did some knitting. Peace Treaty was signed at Versailles this afternoon" June 28 1919."Went over to Penhenver in the morning to see submarine k14 pass" Sept 1st 1919. Most entries are similar to these: "Went to the Meeting church service in the morning & called to see Ethel D who is so ill. Went over to see A and H and had tea there. 12 altogether at tea and Mr. Gully was there - the blind brother. I enjoyed it very much. Went to the gospel and Mr. G preached Acts 7:55 ." Sept 28 1919. "Paid a visit at last to Mrs Bowen felt impressed to go since getting up. I had a very happy time with her one felt the warmth of Christian love coming out. After tea I called to see Ethel D. She is still very ill" Oct 8t 1919. "Mr. G went to Newquay today also Mr. T to see about electric lights for "Rockland" Mar 9 1920. "It is a lovely day today. We took our tea to Porth and had it on the rocks the waves dashing up. 11 years today on a Friday John passed away I thought about him" Apr 16 1920. And so the entries go - much focused on her immediate life and those in her small circle of friends. This diary gives a wonderful look inside what may appear to be an ordinary unremarkable life. But closer scrutiny can yield many nuggets of information for a social historian or someone involved in gender studies. ‎1920s SUPER ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT NOTEBOOK HAND WRITTEN BY A MUSICALLY INCLINED MACHINIST'S MATE WHO CATALOGUED AND COMPILED POPULAR AND NAVAL SONGS FROM WWI THROUGH WWII‎

‎U.S. Navy. Good. 1920. On offer is an excellent small songbook kept by an American sailor. This notebook measures 6 inches by 3 3/4 inches and contains 140 pages. It is 60% complete. The cover and pages are in good condition and the handwriting is very legible. For centuries sailors have used songs to help with their heavy work to entertain themselves and to build the sense of crew spirit so needed to man ships for long periods of time in all kinds of weather. Lewis Szarek was no different. A Machinists Mate in the United States Navy he apparently served from the late 1920's into WWII. He has written his name and service US Navy on the inside cover. Casual research suggests that he comes from Providence RI. However no other biographical data was found. The notebooks contain the lyrics to 39 songs. One song Coghlan's Black Gang Crew possibly points to the ship he served on in WWII - the destroyer USS Coughlan DD 606. The term 'black gang' is a naval term with its origins in the days of coal-fired engines. The black gang are the sailors who work in the engine room assigned to either the Machinist Division his or the Boiler Division. The term is used to this day. They range from sentimental to bawdy to downright explicit. The book opens with a very explicit song - The Young Stenographer - that seems to go on and on forever - 101 stanzas! Others are tiles a reader today may recognize including LeHigh Valley Are You Lonely Tonight Louise and Dangerous Dan McGrew. Columbus gets a bit of a bumpy ride in his rendition of Christopher Columbus. There are a couple of railroad songs. Many are sentimental in nature which reflects the long days and months away from home. The last song Heil Hitler is a very explicit description of what 'they' meaning the Americans were going to do with Hitler when they caught him. Throughout the allied armed forces there were similar types of songs about Hitler Mussolini and Tojo. This is an interesting collection of songs that obviously were enjoyed in the enlisted ranks mess while ships were at sea. ‎1840 ORIGINAL SIGNIFICANT MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A BRITISH ARMY OFFICER'S WHO MAY VERY WELL HAVE BEEN A SPY TOUR OF ENGLAND'S OLD FOE AT A TIME OF CHAOS AND COOPERATION‎

‎BARCELONA MADRID SEVILLE SPAIN. Fair. 1840. On offer is an original historically significant and absolutely superb first-hand account of an army officer travelling in 1840s Europe. Was he a tourist or was he a spy His journal takes the form of a pocket notebook measuring 7.25 inches by 4.75 inches. There are 54 pages and they are 100% complete. The handwriting is copperplate. It is hard but not impossible to read. The journal's contents more than make up for its condition. The covers have separated from the book. The pages themselves have separated into their several sections but all are present. The pages are not numbered but there are dates entered in places in his narration. It is the contents though that captures the imagination. Captain H. Herman is a British Army officer. In 1840 he travels from the northeast to the southwest of Spain. Visiting major centres such as Barcelona Seville and Cadiz he paints a detailed picture of the countryside its inhabitants and the customs he encounters. As befits a military person he has a sharp eye for detail and his notes are accompanied by a number of finely-executed ink line drawings. He notes other officers that he meets regiments including one that we would refer to today as 'off-the books' and notable personages. These were tumultuous times in Spain. Ferdinand VII died without a male heir. Prior to his death he changed the succession laws to enable his young 3 years old daughter Isabella to assume the throne instead of his more reactionary brother Carlos. This set off the Carlist wars that raged for years. Isabella's mother ruled as regent and eventually she found a winning general - Baldemero Espartero to help her drive back the Carlists. The country already devastated by the Napoleonic Wars sank further into poverty and destitution. The British government supported Isabella in her endeavours and indeed assisted in raising a regiment for her. The British Legion was a force of 10000 British military volunteers funded and paid by the Spanish crown. These British soldiers were placed under the command of Espartero. Espartero went on to become Prime Minister of Spain in 1840 and ruled the country with an iron fist for two years. Having a British officer travelling throughout Spain either on a personal trip or to report back to Whitehall was of clear benefit to Britain. He travels to Barcelona from Toulouse France in September of 1840. There he meets a Colonel Clarke of the British Legion who has with him 150 Dragoons and a brigade of legionnaires. He makes reference to Espartero receiving a civic crown: Espartero received a civic crown of delicately wrought gold and placed it on the colours of the 'Esparterists' present - 13000 men of his army they are all well made muscular fine men fit for army service. He dines with a newspaperman commenting: Moor who writes for the morning chronicle has £5.00 - he accompanied the army - as a favourite of Espartero often dined with him - has been in some actions with him and has decorations displayed - has seven or eight but the Major of one of the Reg'ts has some 13 I think !!! He met others in positions of authority or influence as well: the American Consul in Barcelona Mr McCulloch - splendid house dining bad champagne tolerable sherry bad port. At Taragonna he sketches the harbour including a ship under sail. notes crops grown in areas along coast. He describes one village as a vile place. Another area is described as : A dusty bad road - no view - no beauty. The populace poor ragged and ugly - not one good-looking woman . terribly dull place cheap houses. There is a 2-page ink and pencil sketch of Alicante with the Santa Barbara Castle on the cliff above and a description of the harbour. He refers to Sir John Murray and his defeat of the French General Suchet at the battle of Castallia Apr 1813 and then goes on to comment on Murray's disastrous attempt to take Tarragonna in June of that same year. He comments on the quality of Spanish troops he encounters - very poor. His journey takes him south to Cartagena and Almeria - and includes 2 excellent ink and pencil sketches. His descriptions of these cities are detailed but quite disparaging - possibly reflecting both his class origins in Britain and his rank as a British officer travelling in country won by Wellington in the Peninsular War. There are 2 excellent drawings of the port of Malaga. He provides a detailed description of what he sees and experiences in Grenada the Generalife and the stunning Alhambra palace: "The whole is beyond all description". There are drawings of a number of notable locations in Granada. he frequently notes formations of Spanish troops: 10th Cordova Regiment review 3000 national guard . some fine men . well skilled . Captain Jml Llamos reviews From Grenada he carries on inland: the approach to Jaen is most beautiful lengthy gentle slopes covered with superb hues. Further west he passes villages where battles were fought in the Peninsular Campaign: The French General was a coward. He surrendered to half his number… In Cordova he mentions of Espartero again: Espartero began his influence successfully by shooting half a dozen colonels for cowardice. In Cadiz he noted that Espartero was present for a review of 2500 troops accompanied by a few well mounted well looking lancers and about 40 lancers of the Horse Volunteers Also in Cadiz in December of 1840 he notes the arrival of the Captain General of Andalusia: Captain General of Andalusia here from Sevilla in anticipation of some disturbances of the Election which begins tomorrow. He noted as well that a French frigate came in to the harbour during the election. This is an utterly fascinating first-hand account of travels during the turbulent 1840's in Spain. It is a gold mine for historians especially those studying the Napoleonic Wars or Spain and Britain in the 1840s. Whether from a military or social history perspective Hermans' notebook offers a rich source of first-hand observations. The ink and pencil drawings carry an evocative power of their own. There is a sense of places frozen in place giving them a timeless existence. The constant revolutions and struggles between the traditional forces that supported an authoritarian government and a growing liberal faction were of keen interest to Britain as she had a long-standing ally in neighbouring Portugal. This turmoil was to continue in one form or another into the 20th century culminating with the brutal dictator Francisco France. ‎1871 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT NOTEBOOK FILLED WITH LECTURE AND STUDY NOTES ON A VARIETY OF SUBJECTS WHILE AT ONE OF AMERICA'S OLDEST INSTITUTIONS OF LEARNING‎

‎PROVIDENCE RI. Good. 1871. On offer are the lecture notes of a mid-19th century university student at one of the oldest universities in the United States founded decades before the American Revolution. Measuring 10 inches by 7.75 inches the hardcover notebook has 220 pages and is 100% complete. The handwriting is copperplate and is easy to read. The author is Herbert Almy and he is a student at Brown University in 1870's. From a course outline affixed to one page it appears that these notes were written in the winter of 1871-72. Almy graduated from Brown in 1873 and entered the legal profession. He was Assistant Clerk of the US Supreme Court from 1876 to 1885. Subsequently he practiced law in Providence RI. Brown University located in Providence RI is the 7th oldest university in the United States and one of the 9 that were chartered before the American Revolution. It is a private Ivy League university with a good reputation for research. Its alumni number many successful graduates in a wide range of fields. This lecture notebook contains Almy's notes for chemistry geology and philosophy. His chemistry professor was likely John Appleton. There is a small pamphlet written by Appleton attached a a page. It describes him as 'Professor of Chemistry Brown University'. Appleton in the late 1870s published several books on chemistry and laboratory work for application in the classroom. The notes cover a range of topics within the field of chemistry. They include notes explanations and formulae: "Peroxide of Hydrogen H2O2 ; Oxygen and hydrogen form a second compound; it is a liquid which easily decomposes leaving water and liberating oxygen it has active bleaching powers but it is difficult of preparation; Compounds. Chlorine forms several compounds with oxygen 4 of which belong to the class of anhydrides. Cl2O Hypochlorous anhydride Cl2O3 Chlorus " Cl2O5 Chloric" " Cl2O7 Perchloric" p. 47. Altogether there are 70 pages of such notes and explanations. His Geology lecture notes identify his professor as John Appleton describing him as a Chemist At Brown p. 71. The notes show that the course was divided into 5 topic areas: physiographical lithographical historical dynamical and economical pp. 72-73. The course tackled among many topics the origin of mankind. His notes refer to evolution per Darwin and also creationism; "2 Time of Man's Appearance. There is but one of the sources of information upon this subject that gives us knowledge with respect to absolute time this is the Historical source the Bible ." p. 126. The philosophy course is entitled Intellectual Philosophy and was taught by President Ezekiel Robinson. Robinson was a Baptist clergyman and noted educator. He was Brown University's 7 President serving from1872 until 1889. The lectures on philosophy are mainly concerned with the "Science of Mind" -- psychology consciousness cognitive faculties space and time etc. Questions on moral philosophy are handled in separate part of the course following the sections on mind. "The science of mind known in our language as mental philosophy embodies some of the results of two distinct branches of knowledge namely Psychology and Ontology ." p. 136. His notes go on to explore the nature of the mind and intellect. Taken as a whole this lecture book gives an excellent snapshot of the state of current thinking on these topics at a major American university. It is a fine reference work for a researcher looking at the state and progress of higher learning in America. ‎1874 SUPER ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF AN EXTENDED VOYAGE AND EVENTUAL RESETTLEMENT OF AN AMESBURY MASSACHUSETTS MAN AND HIS FAMILY TO THE GOLD FIELDS OF CALIFORNIA‎

‎WEST AMESBURY MASSACHUSETTS NORTH VALLEY CALIFORNI. Fair. 1874. On offer is an outstanding journal of an adventurous voyage in the 1870s. Measuring 8.25 inches by 6.25 inches it contains 46 pages. It is about 76% complete. The handwriting is clear and legible. The spine of the hardbound book has broken and the covers are loosely attached but all pages are intact and in good condition. Albion Sanborn was a 35 year old married man living in West Amesbury MA in the later 1860s/early 1870s. He decides to leave his wife Maria and their child to go to California to seek his fortune and then return home at some unspecified time in the future. Casual research has not produced any further biographical information. He makes his way to New York City where on March 14th 1874 he boards the Pacific Mail Steamship Company's SS Henry Chauncey. The Chauncey had an interesting history. She was launched October 1864 for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company and entered the New York to Aspinwall service on November 1 1865 and remained on this route until 1869. She burned at sea on August 16 1871 off the Carolina Coast while on passage from New York to Kingston Jamaica and Aspinwall with no loss of life. The hull was rebuilt and she continued on this route until she was eventually scrapped in 1877. He writes in detail about the ships journey through the Panama Canal mentioning conditions in the various ports of call en route. Such as what it's like in such places as Kingston Jamaica Tobago Islands Panama Aspinwall Colon Panama and Punta Arenes Costa Rica among other destinations. "The island of Jamaica seems to be all mountains and pretty high ones at that. It seems quite nice. . After the vessel had been made fast a young man by the name of Robinson and myself went on shore and hired a carriage of the one-horse persuasion to give us a ride around town and and show us the sights. . By the way we feel the heat here to our hearts content. It seems like five or six fourths of July boiled down into one. . Mar 21 . I should say that the principal business of the place Aspinwall was selling rum whisky and other spirituous liquors. And gambling. In the evening there are tables along the sidewalks for the purpose of gambling. What the game is called I don't know. But one thing I noticed was that most of all who were foolish enough to risk their money in it lost it. . Mar 24 He writes about people both on board and in villages along their route. He speaks often about the Sabbath Day and he is a church-goer. There are many ladies on board and many men that look pale and sick going to seek a more healthy climate . Mar 15 The consumption of dress goods among the native women cannot be very alarming and it is a very common thing to see children without any covering at all which must save an immense amount of wear and tear. . Mar 25 When he arrives in California he describes landmarks towns and people that he encounters. He writes briefly about the mines and prospectors. The boom years of the California Gold Rush had passed but growth in the state continued to be strong. Sanborn disembarked in San Francisco on April 25th. After several days he leaves for North Valley CA. Without any reference to how he found work his entry for May 4th states: Went to shop and worked some in the forenoon. . May 4 The remaining entries mostly concern his working in 'the shop' and include references to people he meets and gets to know as well as social activities. He refers several times to letters he receives from his wife Maria. His journal ends simply on June 14 with an entry about attending church. Following the journal section there is a 6 page section entitled Quotations. In it he has copied a number of passages from various sources that obviously had meaning for him. This is an excellent first-hand account of a journey that had been taken by tens of thousands of Americans who went west to seek their fortune. In its own way it too is a goldmine - of direct observations impressions and reflections of someone who was there to record his part of the experience. Historians would find this a solid piece of primary-source information as would geographers. ‎1932 SUPER SIGNIFICANT ORIGINAL TYPED MANUSCRIPT LOG BOOK DETAILING AN EARLY AVIATION EVENT OF STUNNING ACHIEVEMENT IN AN OPEN AIR BI-PLANE BY AN EARLY AVIATION PIONEER AND GREAT FRIEND OF CHARLES LINDBERGH‎

‎DAYTON OHIO TO PORTLAND OREGON. Good. 1932. On offer is a superb and quite rare logbook detailing a cross-continent flight in an open-air biplane. Measuring 11 inches by 8 inches the log book contains 19 typed pages plus 2 pages of orders The log book has a hard bound cover and it is in excellent condition. It is one of only five copies made. The log details a cross-country flight in 1932 in a two-seat open-cockpit BT-2B Douglas biplane by First Lieutenant Air Corps Charles Dawson McAllister and Captain Gaylord S. Gilbert Cavalry National Guard. The flight was a training flight authorized by the chief of the Air Corps via Special Orders No. 188. Its purpose was to attend the Legion Convention in Portland OR. The flight log describes the details of their flight and personal reactions in a very informal sometimes humorous style. Includes a page detailing takeoff and landing points times of arrival and departure miles and time in the air for each leg of the journey. Tucked inside is an article from Purdue's alumni magazine The Triad published March 1933 describing the flight; the article has two photographs. Charles Dawson McAllister 1896-1997 was born in Logansport Indiana. He entered the military service in May 1917 and served in WWI as a lieutenant in infantry. He later graduated from Purdue; at one time he was head of the Purdue Alumni Association. In 1924 he transferred to the Air Corps and eventually became Chief Electrical Unit Engineering Section of the Air Corps. In the 1940s he ran the country's only B-24 training program. McAllister had a storied flying career. Before retiring as a colonel he flew 6200 hours for the Army. He also flew 5000 hours in his own planes - including a 19000-mile trip to the southern tip of South America. McAllister was associated with a young Charles Lindbergh. On March 26 1925 McAllister and Lindbergh who were both in flight school were involved in a much-reported mid-air plane collision out of Kelly Field. At the time McAllister was an officer and Lindbergh only a cadet. The two along with an instructor were on a three-plane training maneuver during which Lindbergh according to McAllister hit McAllister's plane. Both safely bailed out. The two had a relationship which continued over the years. He passed away in 1997 at the age of 102. Co-pilot Gilbert graduated from law school in Louisville KY and was a captain of cavalry in the Kentucky National Guard. Casual research did not turn up any additional biographical information on Gilbert. They flew a BT 2B Douglas biplane. Built as an observation aircraft for the United States Army in the 1920's this was a very reliable plane. The Douglas Aircraft Company was founded in 1921. In 1967 it merged with McDonnell Aircraft to become McDonnell Douglas. In 1997 McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing Aircraft. The flight detailed in the logbook began and ended at Wright Field Dayton OH. They took off on September 7 1932 and made 10 stops along the way -- Minneapolis Municipal Airport Minneapolis MN; Great Falls Municipal Airport Great Falls MT; Boeing Field Seattle WA; Pearson Field Portland OR; Crissy Field San Francisco CA; Clover Field Santa Monica CA; March Field Riverside CA; Phoenix Airport Phoenix AZ; Biggs Field El Paso TX; and Fort Sill OK. They returned to Wright Field on September 21 1932. The log was written mostly by Gilbert. In addition to flight and navigation details Gilbert makes frequent personal comments. September 7th - Wednesday 9:30 A.M E.S.T. left Wright Field Ohio; weather - perfect. Wind - north. Temperature - mild. 12:15 P.M. C.S.T. left CHICAGO Terrain flat to MT. HOREB WIS. Good landing. Then rough rolling to LACROSSE. Poor Landing. Weather - prefect. Average calm flying low all the way under 1000 feet to take advantage of wind Rough over Wisconsin. I had apple pie too early this morning. May not keep it. Just got rid of apple pie etc. over WISCONSIN…I climbed up to 3000 feet altitude where it was smooth but wind too strong to make speed. September 8th - Thursday 9:50 A. M. We are cruising at 112 mph and compass reads two points north of west. Over the plains now. There is a nice herd of cattle. I will have these notes typed when I return to the office with extra copies. I am passing the note book forward to MAC. Maybe he wants to say whether or not this country is worth fighting for September 9th - Friday It was too rough to do any writing in the plane yesterday P.M. but I will try to describe in a very few words our experience over the ROCKIES at the CONTINENTAL DIVIDE. About 3:30 P.M. we were flying due west at 5000 feet over the desert of SOUTHERN MONTANA. We had taken off our jackets and opened our shirts trying to keep cool through the desert climate. Just as we were nearing the foothills a "LINE-SQUALL" struck us and the ship dropped several feet and then twisted right and left and up and down. MAC's life belt was unfastened and he was trying to control the ship with one hand and fasten his belt with the other. This air disturbance lasted for several minutes immediately we encountered a 65 mile wind from the northwest. The air was exceedingly rough and we were tossed up and down right and left. We continued fighting this storm for over an hour with the nose of the 'plane pointing northwest into the storm but the 'plane actually travelling a due westwardly course. It seemed to me that the 'plane was hardly moving. For another one and one half hours we continued to freeze and fight that windstorm 9000 feet over the rocky peaks of the CONTINENTAL DIVIDE. Arriving at the convention in Portland OR Gilbert comment on the outstanding hospitality: I never saw a CONVENTION CITY give so much away free to the VETS as PORTLAND did this year . p7 The log details some of the activities in which they participated and them documents their return trip to Wright Field. There is a summary of the flight data for each 'leg' of the journey. And on the last page Gilbert identifies who received each of the 5 copies of this log. This is a rare and valuable document that provides an excellent 'cockpit view' of the state of flying in 1932. The dry flight data is accompanied by the wry and frequently humorous comments that Gilbert makes in his entries. An aviation historian would find this log a goldmine of information about this plane - only one of which exists today. ‎WILKES-BARRE PENNSYLVANIA WYOMING CANYON COALFIELD. Good. 1899. On offer is an interesting diary written at the turn of the century by an educated woman in a major American industrial city. Measuring 4.75 inches by 3 inches this diary is in good condition. It contains 122 pages of entries plus and extensive memoranda section of 72 pages. The memoranda section includes contacts cash accounts as well as notes. The handwriting is legible. Also included are to very small newspaper clippings. One which appears to be dated July 14 1899 is an ad for a teacher. Estelle Stella Jacobosky is a 24 year old woman who is beginning her career as a teacher. She was born in 1875 in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania. Her parents were Jewish immigrants from Germany coming to America about the year 1861. Wilkes-Barre is located adjacent to the Wyoming Valley coalfield - the largest coalfield in the United States in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Her parents were part of the hundreds of thousands of immigrants that flooded into the area from Europe to meet the demands for an expanding workforce. Wilkes-Barre flourished and grew into an industrial and economic powerhouse. Local newspapers record her success in elementary and secondary school and her early years in education. She worked in Philadelphia New Jersey and Long Island as a substitute or supply teacher before returning to Wilkes-Barre where she assumed the role of teacher and head teacher/principal in Carnegie Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh In 1904 Stella married Harry Sumner Witmer. They made their home in Aspinwall PA where he worked as an accountant. They had had three sons. Stella passed away in 1955 at the age of 79. The diary is a record of her work as a teacher as well as her social life. Got up at 7:30 A.M. Went on 8:40 car. Home at 4:15 P.M. Dressed. Went sleighriding at 4:30 with Hal W Mrs. Witmer Mrs. Conner and Rose. Home at 6:00P.M. After supper to tailors. Came home and served. Hal called at 9 P.M. Retired 10:30 P.M. Jan 4 1899 Hal W is in fact the man she marries 5 years later. Got up 7:30 A.M. Taught school all day. Home 4:15 P.M. First day in school since I got back from N.Y. Home all evening and write letters. Retired 11:30 P.M. Mar 7 1899 Taught school all day. . Home 4:30 P.M. Went up town after school. In evening went to see Mable Edgar then took a walk. Had company May 19 1899 Arose 8:30 A.A. Started "A Tent of Grace" by a Jewess. Mrs. Taylor called in morning. Mrs. Conners Mrs Barrosti Rose and I went to matinee. Caught in rain . Home all evening. Sept 19 1899 Her cash accounts reveal things like her earnings $45.00 for the months shown the costs of many daily items such as streetcar fare 10¢ tooth powder 25¢ and thread 28¢. There is an extensive list of the people with whom she socialized with and called upon. For a genealogist this is an excellent record of many different family names all situated in a particular place and time. It is valuable cross-reference tool for family research. ‎France. Good. 1900. On offer is a superb notebook most likely used by a mechanical or electro-mechanical engineer at the turn of the 20th century. Measuring 8 inches by 5.25 inches and containing 191 pages plus index the notebook is 100% complete. There is wear damage to the spine but it is intact as are all of the pages within. The handwriting is neat and very legible. This notebook is written entirely in French. The extensive notes and explanations are accompanied by dozens of carefully drawn detailed illustrations. The illustrations in turn are all carefully and neatly labeled. The sections are carefully delineated and there is an index of the 191 pages at the back of the book. The science of engineering had reached a very state in France by the 19th century. French engineers and inventors had created many of the things that we take for granted today. Both the Suez Canal and the Panama Canal were undertaken by French firms. Items such as the parachute stethoscope photograph processes such as pasteurization and cinemas and chemicals such as Aspirin all have their rooks in the engineering laboratories of France. In the 19th century France had created a number of highly-regarded institutes known as grandes écoles to further develop and advance education in new fields of sciences and technologies This notebook is a fine example of the state of mechanical engineering science at the turn of the 20th century in France. ‎1947 SIGNIFICANT ORIGINAL HEBREW MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY A LOCAL COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEMBER DETAILING THE INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT AND VIOLENT MONTHS AND WEEKS IN JERUSALEM BEFORE THE NATION OF ISRAEL WAS REBORN‎

‎Jerusalem Israel British Mandated Palestine. Good. 1947. On offer is a unique historically significant journal handwritten during the final days of British Mandated Palestine most entries made immediately prior to the Declaration of Independence. This is a one-year page a day journal for the Jewish year of 5708 September 1947 to October 1948 has about 50 entries with most entries made between September 1947 and December 1947 and few brief records scattered over the next few months - the last one is dated June 7. It measures 7' by 5' the hardcover is slightly soiled but otherwise the journal is in very good condition. The text is in Hebrew the handwriting is mostly legible. Author's name is not identified but there is a note on the front page: "Vaad Hakehilla. Hanala Klalit" Local Community Council. General Management. It is clear from this note and from the context that the journal was kept by a member of the Hebrew Community Council in Jerusalem the body that was established in 1917 and coordinated and represented different groups of Jerusalem Jews during the British Mandate. Vaad Hakehila was responsible for different aspects of Jewish life in the city including economic and social assistance to the residents. It had a social services department and a society of assistance to kindergartens issues related to them are mentioned in the journal several times. Most entries are the minutes of the Council meetings. Some entries deal with organizational and financial matters taxes elections complaints dispute settlement work of social services purchase of fire engines but most meetings reflect increasingly tense situation in the city and concern food and fuel supply food rationing security and organizing Mishmar ha'am National Guard - unit of volunteers established in September 1947 in Jerusalem for maintenance of public order. The Council was constantly in contact with the state authorities political and religious leaders various Jewish organizations trying to solve various problems facing Jewish community in the city. Among the names mentioned in the journal are Yitzhak Ben-Zvi David-Zvi Pinkas a Zionist activist politician a signatory of the Declaration of independence and a future minister Mordechai Shatner a signatory of the Declaration activist and politician one of the founders of Yad Va-Shem who then was a member of the Jewish National Council Ben-Zion Meir Hai Uziel the Sephardi chief rabbi of Mandatory Palestine who appeared before the Mandatory government as representatives of the Jewish community and on missions on its behalf Itzhak HaLevi Herzog the first Chief Rabbi of Ireland and then the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Mandatory Palestine and of Israel Menashe Elassar a noted Jerusalem businessman and many other. The first entry is dated September 15 and mentions a meeting with Mr. Ben-Zvi who had been the President and a member of the Vaad Haleumi the National Council a post in which he served as the chief representative of the Jewish community vis-a-vis the mandatory authorities. His name is mentioned several times throughout the journal in relation to various matters. A council meeting on September 17 dealt with several issues including social work and house confiscation order of the Babayoff family: "Military Commander refused a request to postpone confiscation order for the Babayoff's House till after the holidays…. Chief Rabbi Uziel was asked to speak with the commissioner about postponement of the confiscation order. Rabbi Herzog was also asked to speak with the Military Commander regarding the same matter". Many entries mention searches conducted by the British Army in Jewish neighbourhoods one of such searches on Yom Kippur Eve finished with desecration of a synagogue: "Search in Nachlat Zvi Jerusalem neighbourhood. After we received information regarding the desecration of the synagogue by the army during their search R' Nattan and I went to check if the information was correct. We reached the location after the search had finished and the army left the place. All the synagogue benches the tables chairs and pillows were upside down. All of the study books Mishnayot Zohar Gemaras were scattered on the floor. The holy ark was open and the Torah scrolls were open ." Some of the entries refer to property damage caused by bombings that the council members were assessing: "After the two nights that passed in Jerusalem Shabbat night and Motzei Shabbat when tens of thousands of bullets were shot towards the all the Jewish areas of the city I got up early . to visit the places that were the primary targets of the bullets of the police and soldiers. The primary target was again the homes near the police dormitory in the hospital of the English Mission. The view of the horrifying sight of the destruction caused to these homes and the miracle that nobody's life was taken . testimonies were collected from dozens of people."Nov. 16. One of the constant subjects was ensuring food and fuel supply in the city: "Meeting of the supply committee with bakery owners to ensure sufficient flour supply in case of emergency" ".To bring all wholesalers and demand from them to increase supplies in Jerusalem." they meet with members of the Jewish National Council JNC and devote many meetings to this matter. As part of their activity they meet with mukhtars heads of Arabic neighbourhoods. Va'ad had limited means to cope with the worsening situation and in December the Jerusalem Emergency Committee was set up that took upon itself civil administration of Jewish Jerusalem which explains why there are almost no entries after November. Though it includes only about 50 entries of varying length the journal provides a lot of details from the months preceding the Declaration of Independence and contains names of many people who played an important role in creation of the Israeli State. ‎DE GRAFF OHIO. Good. 1863. On offer is an interesting rather matter-of-fact 19th Century Civil War era diary that recounts life in middle America with the awful backdrop of an awful war. The diary measures 4.75 inches by 3 inches. It contains 122 pages of entries plus memoranda. The leather cover is worn but intact as are all of the pages. The handwriting is a combination of ink and pencil. Many of the pencilled entries are faded. Delores Dunn lives in the area of De Graff OH about 30 miles north of Springfield. In 1860 she is single and lives with her parents and context suggests on a farm. She notes the visits of quite a number of 'gentlemen callers' but not record their names. The church plays an important role in her life and she attends both services and Sunday School regularly. Her entries are quite matter-of-fact. She notes the weather each day and one or two notable events. Much of entries recount household tasks. "This has been a nice New Years day. I have not done much today. I sewed a while and sung some. We had company from Degraff. Gift for my Ma. This is a New Year" Jan 1; "This has been a pleasant day. I was sewing and reading in the afternoon. We had a caller in the evening. I went to preaching and heard a grand sermon" Jan 6; "This has been a tolerable nice day. I was at home all day. I was sewing. It was nice work. We had a visitor and had some fun. Sam Criss called a while in the evening." Feb 6; "This has been a rather disagreeable day. It snowed nearly all day. I churned a large churning. Sam and Lake came up in the evening awhile. and Sam had some more fun this is all that happened today" Mar 3. The events of the outside world do not seem to intrude. The American Civil War is raging and there is no mention of some of the major battles such as Chancellorsville. The Emancipation Act came into force January 1st freeing all slaves and she makes no mention of it. Her cash account entries are spare perhaps reflecting her situation. However some entries do give a sense of costs for various items such as a stamp to mail a letter 6¢ shoe repairs 20¢ and a sheet of paper 1¢. There are also some poems that she has written in the back of the diary. A historian would find this simple straight-forward account of life in rural mid-19th century America filled with the minutiae that taken as a whole provides a snapshot of life at that time. ‎Massachusetts. Good. 1871. On offer is a fascinating. original pair 2 of interesting manuscript diaries that belonged to members of the Bates family in Massachusetts - Mrs. Hiram Bates nee Ellen Francis Thorpe in the second marriage Mrs. Charles W. Merry and her step-daughter Delia Maria Bates. The first diary authored by Delia Maria Bates in 1871 measures 3'9 x 2'5 and almost 100% complete. The second authored by Ellen Francis Thorpe measures 3'9 x 2'5 is for 1879 but the entries are for March 3rd to April 10th 1881 and for May 1st to June 12th 1907. Both diaries are in very good condition. Delia Maria Bates 1849 - 1892 was a daughter of Hiram Bates and Diantha Maria Hubbard she was 22 when writing the diary. Delia's diary covers the complete year of 1871 and in the back pocket there is a charming piece of lace ribbon. There are only 9 days that Delia does not write and that's because she is sick. She also seems like she's away from home for quite some time. Delia writes about her day-to-day life - visits from friends and family family events like marriages and birthdays going to dances and Dramatic Club. She mentions local events: on July 20th she writes about an earthquake which was felt on that morning all over New England and a fire that burned a house. She is often sick complaining on her health in many entries and she died when she was only 43 in 1892. Here some of the entries from her diary: "May 28th Henry Eddy came to see me this P.M. Came from church and stayed about 2 hours. Dwight stayed here last night. I returned everything to him that belonged to him so I have nothing left of his. Fare the well thou will soon forget this poor frame. I may soon lie smoldering in the clay. But mayest thou always be happy and may thy days be many and crowned with blessings."; "August 30th I am getting homesick. I don't know what I shall do. O for a lodge in some vast wilderness. I wish I might find some rest somewhere. This turmoil within all the time."; "November 25th Worked on my dress. What a splendid evening not a cloud obscures the beauty of the scene. How I would like to be at liberty to go out and enjoy it if I were this close room would not confine me long. How I love the bright moon shine. It is so beautiful so grand and glorious." The second diary is authored by Delia's stepmother Ellen Francis Thorpe 1829-1911 who married Delia's father Hiram Bates after his first wife died in 1852. Hiram died in 1900 and 5 years after his death she married Charles Wallace Merry from California. Ellen's diary covers 38 days in 1881 in which she writes about day-to-day life records weather family and local events. The entries made in 1907 are the most interesting they cover 43 days from May 1st to June 12th and describe her trip to New York via Panama leaving from her now home in California: "May 1st Started for the east at half past seven o'clock. Took the cars at Los Angeles at 10 o'clock. Arrived at Port Los Angeles about 3 o'clock. Took the steamboat for San Francisco about 7 o'clock."; "May 2nd -4th Both sick all day on board the Santa Rosa. Did not eat anything all day. Arrived in San Francisco about 4 in the afternoon. Went to the Hotel West….Staid over night. Went to the Cliff House to Bath House and Park back to Hotel West. Staid over night again. Then started for the steamboat Newport. Started at noon for Panama…Started at 12 o'clock for Panama which is a long sail. Will take 22 day to get there they say."; "May 9th We had 7 women and 8 children on board in our stateroom. One black woman one black girl. They think they are just as good as anyone."; "May 11th & 12th Arrived at San Blaz this morning taking on coffee all morning when that is loaded we will go on. Natives come around in boats to sell their fruits of all kinds……Plenty of company on board today. Spanish Mexican and coconuts pineapples melons &c. Had a fight on board. Had the fellow put in iron for punishment." They get to San Juan de Guatemala and unload more freight. Stay there 3 days then on to Corinto "June 9th Quite a quiet day on board. Brought some New Zealand monkeys out to show one of them. Would play but the boys bothered them so. He seemed to take a liking to me and wanted to play but he bit me so I had it done up by the surgeon." ‎1940s ORIGINAL WWII ROYAL AIR FORCE MANUSCRIPT DIARY BY AN RAF PILOT CRUISING THE BAY OF BENGAL FOR ENEMY SHIPPING AND SUBMARINES IN THE WONDERFUL SUNDERLAND FLYING BOATS‎

‎OBAN AIR BASE. Good. 1940. On offer is a unique original 1940s diary handwritten by British RAF pilot K. Halliday. The diary measures 3.5'x 6.5' contains 100 pages about 80% of which are complete. The leaves are saddle-stitched but staples started to rust and the center leaf is detached and the cover is partially detached. Otherwise the diary is in very good condition and the handwriting is very legible. The diary was kept by 188335 Flying Officer K. Halliday. F/O Halliday was a pilot of Sunderland Flying Boats with 302 FTU and 240 Squadron until March 1946 and 205 Squadron from April 1946. No. 240 and No. 205 Squadrons were a Royal Air Force flying boat and seaplane squadrons. No.240 Squadron spent the first half of the war serving in Home Waters and the second half operating from India. From July 1942 until the end of the war it flew anti-shipping and submarine patrols over the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. In December 1944 the squadron also began to fly agents and supplies into the Dutch East Indies it was disbanded on 1 July 1945. No 205 squadron flew anti-submarine and air rescue patrols out of Koggala Ceylon from July 1942 to the end of the war. The squadrons were flying Consolidated Catalina and since summer 1945 Short Sutherland a British flying boat patrol bomber one of the most powerful and widely used flying boats in WW2. The diary records details of flights between Oban Gibraltar Port Augusta Kasfereit Habbaniya Bahrein Korangi Creek Trombay Red Hills Lake Koggala Cochin Calcutta Syriam Burma Penang Singapore Seletar Hong Kong Labuan Borneo Macasser Dutch East Indies and the UK. The text on the front paper says: "Observations taken "en-route" on Transit Trips"; F/O Halliday K.; No ops or routine flights recorded; Non-secret" The diary covers several ferry trips made between Marc 6th 1945 and March 20th 1946. The first ferry flight was from Obam to Gibraltar and return to UK it took 101.05 hours in 17 days. RAF Oban was a Royal Air Force RAF flying boat base located at the northern end of the island of Kerrera Scotland during the Second World War. Halliday gives details of the flights weather conditions occurrences with the flights problems with the aircraft provides information about the bases where they stopped including sleeping arrangement food and service. He also kept lists of many of his passengers crew rosters etc. Many of his passengers signed the diary particularly those shortly after the war ended. Here are some excerpts from his entries: "Ferry No 1. Oban to Gibraltar. 6th March 1945. Took off from Oban at 1850. ½ route after take off radar packed in went out three times during the trip. "George" automatic pilot went u/s with same old trouble. I/c was howling a lot. Fuel pressure lights came on for S.O. Engine. Had a wizard trip down weather perfect the whole way. Things weren't too bad up till the time the S.O. gave trouble but decided to stay airborne till daylight than risk a landing at night with bad engine"; "8th March. Got cracking on D.I's and snags. There are no radar mechs at New Camp but North Front will lend you a few. The crystal current is apparently the trouble as it drops right off every now and then.The nuts were loose on the "George" oil bottle resulting in loss of oil we ran theP.I. up to the test here and came to the conclusion the compressor had sgeared. - They haven't any new ones here and so as they come by sea from England I'll be flying without it."; "Friday 9th March.On the first leg from Gib. Though there is a little Spanish island to be watched as they boast 2 20mm guns and occasionally use them." He also gives information about personnel meals and accommodation at each destination: "Summary of stay in Gib. Accomodation for officers O.K. the NCO's were rather crowded. Food in both messes O.K. Maintenance fellows quite keen and helpful Cigarettes very cheap 2/4 for 50 as were the wines."; "Summary of stay in Fanara. Officers and N.C.O's eat and sleep together accommodation very crowded indeed - 7 of us in one tent c.o. Mentioned they were arranging more accommodation. Food quite good in the mess quite sufficient spirits in the bar." Most of his flights after the war were in Asia where there were not many large runways and their ability to land on water was required. In addition the diary contains crew rosters lists of passengers etc. Among the passengers were war correspondents Lieutenant Colonels Lathbury and Biddle and other officers and some civilians. ‎1907 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIAY HAND WRITTEN BY AN ALL AMERICAN MAN POSTAL CLERK AND PHILADELPHIA MAN ABOUT TOWN‎

‎PHILADELPHIA PENNSYLVANIA PA. Good. 1907. On offer is a very complete diary of a young man in the early years of the 20th Century. The diary measures 7.5 inches by 5 inches and has 365 pages. It is 100% complete. The book is in good condition and all of the pages are intact. The handwriting is legible and easy to read. The author is a young man named Christian Aitken. In the diary he also wrote his first name as Crisfield but census records list the young man as "Christian H. Aitken". The census lists his birthday as August 23 1884 noted in the diary also which made him 23 years old in 1907. Aitken was single and lived with his parents. He did not specifically mention what type of work he did however context suggests that he worked at the post office mostly night shifts and it is known from other sources that he was appointed a substitute postal clerk and then promoted a postal clerk in 1903. He wrote of when he joined the "service" learning the scales and of huge volumes of mail. Aitken writes extensively about Philadelphia. His diary is replete with the common everyday details that add colour and richness to his descriptions. They paint a vivid picture of life in the city: "Quit the office at 9 A.M. stopped at H & H with macks and had a bite to eat then came home via RAC read the paper a while went out stood 23rd & Ridge Ave awhile then went to the rink and watched the performers awhile came back to the old stand and had a talk with 'Pops Cookhill'. Came home about noon and had dinner after reading an article in the Sat. Eve Post. Bought a hat at Smiths. Stopped at Eddie's house and we went to the skating rink ." Feb 16 ". we had intended to go to William Grove Park but we didn't . went downtown via 20th St. and took subway cars and went to Buckwood Park a resort beneath Woodside Park. Came home on the L to 52nd St. to Girard to 29th St. and had supper. Then went down to the O.S. and met Bill at Boyles and we went to Strawberry Mansion and heard Welsh sing a few songs then we met the girls and came in together via 20th St. and had ice cream at Mahler's sat on the step a while and then went to work." June 23. He very often went to the then Philadelphia Athletics games and kept the scores in the back of the diary. He also played baseball fished bowled skated etc. He spent a lot of time playing pool poker board games and when he wasn't busy with those pastimes he was in the movies seeing shows or just hanging out on street corners or with his friends both male and female. On his vacation he travelled to several Pennsylvania towns and to New York City. While in NYC he visited Coney Island went to the horse races the Bowery saw the "Pennsy RR Station" under construction 5th Ave and more. He noted many of the local daily events several of which he saw first hand - fires a suicide accidents a riot an embezzler at work being stopped by the police and more. ". Big Fire - Broad and Buttonwood Sts. ." Sept 8. ". On our lunch hour Thomas and I took a stroll through the deserted streets. We were doing Commerce St. When we were suddenly confronted by a couple of cops. . they inquired who we were and where we were going. They thought we were a couple of hobos ." Oct 16. For an urban historian this is a detailed and colourful description of Philadelphia at the turn of the last century. His descriptions are detailed and offer an excellent insight into the life of a young working man at that time. He mentions a number of friends and describes the popular social life of young men and women at that time. ‎HONG KONG KOWLOON CHINA. Good. 1956. On offer is an interesting military diary from the immediate post WWII years. It measures 5.5 inches by 3 inches and contains 365 page plus memoranda. The cover is in good condition and all pages are intact. It is about 66% complete although many entries are quite brief. K.J. Fillery is the author of this diary. In 1956 he is a Corporal in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers REME. Casual research has not turned up any additional information but he has noted his service ID number which would make a detailed search successful. Fillery belongs to a Light Aid Detachment LAD attached to the 27th HAA Reg't RA Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment Royal Artillery. The 27th was stationed in Hong Kong and the REME LAD unit was attached to it to assist with engineering tasks. On Dec 30th 1956 he embarked for Hong Kong to join the Regiment. He arrived Jan 25th: "Total - 9255 miles. Arrived Kowloon about 0800. Very busy harbour good views of the island. Letter from Mum and Sheila. Weather cool - rather cold in fact. Ferry to Victoria arrived about 1100. Transported with mob of gunners to Stanley Bks miles away over twisty hilly road. Impressive scenery. Installed in L.A.D quarters." Jan 25. Almost immediately he is out shipping - important when you consider the rationing in effect in England at the time: "Started work in gunnery sets. Payday - $40.00. . bought cable release and PO medium filter $4.50. Went to tailors place bottles of pilsner steak egg supper in Sailors Mission House went to New York Theatre - saw "A Day to Remember"." Jan 26. All told he spent 9 months in Hong Kong before being rotated back to England Oct 17th. In those 9 months he travelled throughout Hong Kong visiting shops restaurants theatres cinemas etc. He also details his work whether standing guard duty or working with electrical equipment: ". Everyone knocked off at 1100 to attend Regt sports meeting Boundary Road. Stayed there about 5 min walked & then bus back to Ferry. Went to American Library. Spent couple of hours rooting around. Reasonable selection of books." Feb 16 "Went to town with Dave Fishback over to Kowloon visited YMCA etc. then saw King Henry V for free in evening excellent film though the presentation was not exactly 'West End' . apparently blokes caught a snake cobra down by flying dhobi . " May 19 "Hot day. Did minute portion of work on 4/7. Chemical de-bugging session . " July 31. He was present for the Kowloon Riots of 1956. He notes: "Admin put off owing to riots in Kowloon . Many gunners mobilized into riot squads. Curfew on Kowloon 1930-1030." Oct 11 He shipped out Oct 17th on the British troop ship SS Captain Hobson. Hobson had served as a Royal Navy hospital ship HMHS Amarapoora throughout WWII. En route they stopped in Dakar: "Dakar pop. About 295000 of whom 28000 Europeans. French naval base and commercial port." Nov 26. They docked in Liverpool Dec 5th. His last entry is Dec 8th: "Demobbed!!! He is an avid photographer and has purchased camera equipment in Hong Kong. Some of his memoranda pages contain notes about focal lengths etc. This is an excellent first-hand account of post-war garrison duty in the Far East. There is sufficient detail to paint an interesting picture of a young English soldier dropped into the exotic Far East. Historians will appreciate the corroborating information contained within. On offer is a super group of four 4 original five 5 year diaries detailing one Chicago Illinois woman's life during the critical 20 year span of pre-World War II through to post Korea Cold War era of American and world history. Ably handwritten by Ethel Creutz she begins in 1937 and continues through 1957. Ethel likely in her early twenties at the beginning details her life in a pointed staccato whether the mundanities of day-to-day life or more significant matters with frequent references to Chicago's Loop Westinghouse where HL her husband secured a job Marshall's Department store where HL bought a pair of oxford shoes for $7.98 /$8.16 with tax June 5 1948 and Fields Department store where they bought HL a suit for $20.10 and a straw hat for $4.00 June 27 1949 a friend purchasing a new TV Oct 27 1952 - from these and so many more a reader can feel the rhythm of life. References to HL being laid off Dec13 1937 and then finding new work hint at the struggles they sometimes faced. Here are some snippets: "Walked to Alice sic Took my fur coat to the furriers. Apr 13 1937; "went to Chicago loop Got Jr gift - Fuller Hair BrushMar 31 1937 "went to 10:00 o'clock lunch at Alice - played cards in afternoon"Oct 28 1937; "Ironed and shopped went to dentist ." July 25 1944. Dec 7 1941 contains the entry: "Japanese fired on Pearl Harbor"followed by Dec 8's entry: "U States in war with Japan - went to loop the Chicago Loop. Listened and watched on TV Coronation of Queen Eliz - Good day"June 2 1953. A baseball fan she notes: "World Series opened today - Boston Braves won 1-0."Oct 7th 1948. Entries continue each day of play culminating with Cleveland won the World Series Oct 11 1948. Church played a very large role in her life and her diaries are replete with references to church attendance. On June 6 1937 she noted confirmed by Bishop Stewart Bishop George Stewart of the Episcopal Church. Creutz led a very active social life and there are many remarks about letters sent and received between her and her friends card parties and socials at the church. Included in one volume are 2 dated July 1937 and identified photographs. While the pages are intact in each volume the covers range from good to poor. ‎INDIA PAKISTAN. Good. 1950. On offer is a unique and rare group of three photo portfolios dating from mid-20th Century India and Pakistan. Each portfolio measures 14.5 inches by 10 inches and is laid out landscape-style. The first has 78 pages the second 44 pages and the third 14 pages. All are 100% complete. The pages are thick glossy paper and the photographs are black and white. The portfolios are a set entitled Bridges by J.C. Gammon Ltd. Bombay. They contain over 150 black and white photographs of bridges constructed across Indian and Pakistan by J.C. Gammon Ltd Gammon is one of the largest engineering and physical infrastructure construction companies in Asia. Founded by John C. Gammon in India in 1919 it grew to a network of subsidiaries across Asia the Middle East and Africa. Gammon was the driving force behind the introduction of prestressed concrete to India. He designed the reinforced concrete piles of the Gateway of India. The foundations of the arch reach deep into the bedrock. With time he came to be known as the 'Sculptor of Concrete'. Gammon's track record spans significant landmark projects built over decades with a prominent presence across all sectors of civil engineering design and construction. It has a track record of building landmark structures some of which have become iconic. Many of its subsidiary companies were spun off as independent firms but there was always a high level of exchange of staff and technology between them. Jardine Matheson the British merchant bank established in China in 1832 acquired Gammon's in 1969 The Gammon name can be found across Asia and the Pacific. The portfolios are in excellent condition. Each page features a bridge project undertaken by the firm. The photographs are accompanied by explanatory text such as this: "Patalgana Bridge. A large bridge crossing the Pataganga River near Pen having a total length of 634 feet. The three centre spans each of 100 feet are designed according to Messrs. Christiani & Nielsen's patent method with inclined hangers. The bridge was built in 1937 to the instructions of Mr. T.A. Andrews Chief Engineer and Mr. Suleman Tyabji Superintending Engineer Bombay Government." This is an excellent collection of key infrastructure projects built by the leading contracting firm in Asia. A Civil Engineer would see these are fine examples of the profession and a historian would be able to chart progress with the construction of these many bridges across the Indian subcontinent. ‎BURMA. Fair. 1942. On offer is a super original 1942 typewritten manuscript relic of the Burma Campaign waged between British and Indian forces against Japanese and Thai forces being a fascinating account of a group of Allied soldiers in making the dangerous trek out of Burma to Assam. This eyewitness account includes part of a statement from the commanding officer of the unit against one soldier for the purposes of a court martial original photos of the areas they passed through and members of the unit and a diary account of the month-long trek along with handwritten additions regarding the state of personnel who dropped out along the way a number did die from various illnesses etc. Many of the people mentioned in the account are on the website that specifically lists personnel of the Indian Army Ordnance Corps. Included are four photocopies that came with the original. Condition: The original is very foxed and tatty round the edges but the photos are still in place and good condition and the text is easy to read. On offer is a sensational early 20th Century manuscript travel diary notebook and scrapbook compiled and handwritten by Ian Campbell Hannah 16 December 1874 - 7 July 1944 a British academic writer and Conservative Party politician and author of such books as Christian Monasticism Eastern Asia a History The Heart of East Anglia The Story of Scotland in Stone The Sussex Coast The Berwick and Lothian Coasts. The 250 or so page diary covers the period of 1908 through 1920 and quite heavily leans to an architectural study with super descriptions of the places he visited during his travels. Adding so much more depth are letters postcards clippings and cut outs of the various places he visited making for a very over stuffed book. The book has 200 pages or so on New York Cleveland and Pennsylvania and about 64 pages cover Scotland. Interestingly tucked in is a letter from Somers Clark a noted English Egyptologist communicating about one of his writings. There is also a pen and ink drawing and some colored postcards in the book he used as illustrations. BIO NOTES: Hannah was president of University of King's College in Windsor Nova Scotia. Married the American artist Edith Brand - he was elected a Member of Parliament at the 1935 election and held that seat until he died in 1944.
