Chicago Illinnois: G.I.A. Publications Inc. 1979. This supplement is dated May 31 1979 and begins with Hymn 800 and ends with Hymn 962. A front endpaper may be missing but nothing is lost. No other defects noted and the interior musical score pages are tight and free of marks. Drawing from traditional and contemporary sources this collection of hymns is designed to provide a supplement to The Hymnal 1940. The hymns have been selected as a direct result of requests from parish clergy organists and choir directors for hymn resources reflective of the lectionary but within the standard set by The Hymnal 1940. In addition the editors have sought to enrich certain areas of the Church's devotional and liturgical life with hymns appropriate for Solemnities and Holy Days in the new Kalendar: Baptism of Our Lord Transfiguration the Blessed Virgin Mary Holy Cross Christ the King; as well as provide hymns for use at occasions such as Holy Baptism Ordination Bishop's Visitation Marriage and Burial. A varied selection of hymns for use at the Offertory and Communion is included as well as a general hymns drawn from old and new sources. Many of the hymns can be used as anthems as well as for congregational singing. In several instances alternative tunes are provided and a comprehensive listing of suggested alternate tunes is to be found. While this hymnal supplement has been compiled and edited within the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago it is offered to the entire Church with the prayer that it may bring worshipping congregations closer to Our Blessed Lord and into closer fellowship with each other as they seek to praise Him. Thanks are given to Almighty God for his creative gifts seen in these musical offerings. He who sings prays twice says St. Augustine. May this offering encourage all those who speak to Him in song. Circa 1890's. 1890's. Good. - Close of a letter penned in black ink on an approximately 6-3/4 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide sheet of note paper. The fragment reads: "to hear of the death of your sister. I am ever yours sincerely" and is boldly signed "David Bispham". There are light stains & tiny black marks to the edges of the note paper. There are glue stains on the verso where the paper has been removed from an album. Good. <p>American operatic baritone David Bispham 1857-1921 was born in Philadelphia and studied singing in Florence Milan and Bayreuth. His first professional appearance was as the Duc de Longueville in a London production of Andre Messager's "La Basoche". In 1892 he was engaged to sing at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and after substituting as Kurwenal in Wagner's "Tristan and Isolde" under Gustav Mahler he acquired a contract from Covent Garden and appeared there mainly in Wagnerian roles for all but two of the next ten seasons. He made his American debut at New York City's Metropolitan Opera in 1896 and remained there until 1903 again appearing mainly in Wagnerian roles. Subsequently he devoted most of his time to recitals singing English versions of songs by such composers as Beethoven Schubert and Schumann.</p> Circa [1890's].

Circa 1890. 1890. Good. - Close of a letter on a piece of blue paper approximately 2 inches high by 4-1/4 inches high which has been mounted on a piece of cream-colored paper of the same size. Boldly signed in black ink "Sincerely Yours / David Bispham". The blue paper is rippled from the mounting and the letter "D" in David smudged. Good. <p>American operatic baritone David Bispham 1857-1921 appeared in numerous musical performances in his childhood despite having no formal music training. At the age of twenty-eight he went to Europe and studied singing in Florence Milan and Bayreuth. He was selected to take part in a London performance of Messager's "La Basoche" his first professional appearance on any stage. This led to his singing the role of Kurwenal in Wagner's "Tristan and Isolde" under Gustav Mahler at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden--his first Wagner role. For all but two of the next ten seasons he appeared at Covent Garden mainly in Wagnerian roles. He made his American debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in 1896 singing the role of Beckmesser in "Die Meistersinger". He remained with the Met until 1903. Circa [1890]. unknown

Er "betrieb auch musikwissenschaftliche Forschungen (u. a. zur Geschichte der Oper und des Oratoriums) und verfaßte auf der Grundlage eigener Quellenstudien die ersten wissenschaftlich fundierten Biographien über Johann Sebastian Bach (1865) und seine Söhne" (DBE).

Kein Mensch wird das je besser machen können. Du beherrschst die Partitur, als wenn Du sie selbst gemacht hättest. Deine wundervolle Begeisterung hast Du auf alle Mitwirkenden übertragen und so eine Aufführung zustande gebracht, die glatt als mustergiltig bezeichnet werden kann. Du hast auch dirigiertechnisch ein Meisterstück vollbracht und in dieser einen, ersten Aufführung gleich den Stil für alle folgenden festgelegt. Einen idealeren Interpreten als Dich kann ich mir gar nicht denken. Ich danke Dir für Deine Freundestat, die auch eine große Kunsttat geworden ist [...]" (4. II. 1926). - "Mit mehr Begeisterung hat noch nie ein Mann den anderen mit dem Worte Freund angeredet wie ich heute. Das, was Du für meine Messe geleistet hast, ist mit Talent, Fleiß usw. nicht zu machen. Das kann nur die Liebe. Und die hast Du in überreichen Maße meinem Werke entgegengebracht, hast Dich an das Werk geradezu königlich gebend verschwendet. Mit bloßem Danksagen ist da gar nichts zu machen. Ich kann Dir nur sagen, daß ich die Tage unserer Zusammenarbeit, der Zusammenarbeit zweier schaffen der Künstler, nie vergessen werde [...]" (gleichfalls 4. An einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten mit Glückwünschen zu dessen Vermählung. - Julius Bittner war nach abgeschlossener juristischer Ausbildung als Richter in Wolkersdorf und später im Justizministerium in Wien tätig. Nebenher stand er in Kontakt mit dem Wiener Akademischen Richard-Wagner-Verein und nahm Unterricht bei Josef Labor, Joseph Schalk und Bruno Walter, wurde 1918 in das Kuratorium der Staatsakademie für Musik gewählt und erhielt 1925 den Kunstpreis der Stadt Wien. Sein Werk umfaßt neben Chorwerken insbesondere Opern, zu denen er selbst die Libretti verfaßte. Sein "Walzer aus Wien", der 1930 uraufgeführt wurde und den Streit zwischen Vater und Sohn Johann Strauß zum Thema hat, war ein großer Publikumserfolg. - Auf Briefpapier mit gedr. Briefkopf.
