‎Scarce offprint issue of Olmstead and Tukey's important paper in which a new method for the association of two continuous variables are proposed. ""Its notable properties are: (1) Special weight is given to extreme values of the variables. (2) Computation is very easy. (3) The test is non-parametric."" (From the present paper). ""One of the most influential statisticians of the twentieth century, John Wilder Tukey (1915-2000) played a key role in both the development and study of statistics. Upon receiving his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1939 from Brown University, he joined the faculty at Princeton"" in 1945, he also began work at Bell Laboratories. Equally committed to both Princeton and Bell Labs, Tukey chose to work concurrently at both institutions. He was also a consultant for many companies, such as Merck and Company, Xerox Corporation, and the Educational Testing Service, and was a frequent advisor to the government for such programs as the US Census. From 1960 to 1980 he led the statistical component of NBC's election night projections. Among other projects Tukey analyzed Alfred Kinsey's research and examined data on ozone depletion. Tukey made many important contributions to the field of statistics, such as work in time series analysis, exploratory data analysis, and multiple comparisons. In early 1945, Tukey began working for Bell Labs, a lifelong association, as it would turn out. While at Bell Labs, Tukey worked with B. D. Holdbrook to develop the Nike missile system although the scant correspondence within this collection is rather routine and doesn't reflect their extensive contribution. Tukey also had a reputation for being discreet regarding his more sensitive projects."" (American Philosophical Society).‎

‎Scarce first edition and the first work of its kind, ""Recreational Mathematics"".Qzanam's ""contributions consisted of popular treatises and reference works on ""useful and practical mathematics,"" and an extremely popular work on mathematical recreations" the latter had by far the more lasting impact. Ozanam’s Récréations may be regarded as the forerunner of modern books on mathematical recreations. He drew heavily on the works of Bachet de Méziriac, Mydorge, Leurechon, and Daniel Schwenter" his own contributions were somewhat less significant, for he was not a particularly creative mathematician. The work was later augmented and revised by Montucla and, still later, was translated into English by Hutton (1803).""(DSB).‎

‎First edition and the first appearance of this fundamental paper in which Peano gives the proof of the so-called ""Peano-Existence-Theorem"" and at the same time contains the first explicit statement of ""The axiom of choice"".The Peano-Existence-Theorem, or ""Cauchy-Peano-Theorem"" guarantees the existence of solutions to certain initial value problems. He first published the theorem in 1886 in ""Sull'integrabilita della equazioni differenziali del primo ordine"" in Atti Accad. Sci. Torino, 21, with an incorrect proof. The new correct proof appeared in this paper, as offered.""Peano's work in analysis began in 1883 with an article on the integrability of functions. The article of 1890 (the paper offered) contains notions of integrals and areas. Peano wasthe first to show that the first-order differential equation y' = f(x,y) is solvable on the sole assumption that f is continuous. His first proof dates from 1886, but its rigor leaves something to be desired. In 1890 this result was generalized to systems of differential equations using a different method of proof. This work is also notable for containing the first explicit statement of the axiom of choice. Peano rejected the axiom of choice as being outside the ordinary logic used in mathematical proofs."" ‎First printing of Peano's seminal paper in which he for the very first time discovered a space-filling curve in a 2-dimensional plane, it is often referred to as Peano curves. Peano's ground-breaking paper contained no illustrations of his construction, which is defined in terms of ternary expansions and a mirroring operator. But the graphical construction was perfectly clear to him-he made an ornamental tiling showing a picture of the curve in his home in Turin. Peano's paper also ends by observing that the technique can be obviously extended to other odd bases besides base 3. His choice to avoid any appeal to graphical visualization was no doubt motivated by a desire for a well-founded, completely rigorous proof owing nothing to pictures. At that time (the beginning of the foundation of general topology), graphical arguments were still included in proofs, yet were becoming a hindrance to understanding often counter-intuitive results.Peano' purpose was to construct a continuous mapping from the unit interval onto the unit square. Peano was inspired by Georg Cantor's earlier counterintuitive result that the infinite number of points in a unit interval is the same cardinality as the infinite number of points in any finite-dimensional manifold, such as the unit square. The problem Peano solved was whether such a mapping could be continuous" i.e., a curve that fills a space.‎

‎Two rare and important first editions by the famous Italian mathematician, logical philosopher, pioneer of symbolic logic, and a founder of mathematical logic and set theory, Giuseppe Peano, uniting his first publication in logic with his introduction of the basic elements of geometric calculus. The present ""Calcolo geometrico secondo l'Ausdehningslehre de H. Grassmann"" contains a twenty-page long preliminary section on the operations of deductive logic, which constitutes Peano' s very first publication on the subject for which he is most famous, namely logic. This work appeared the year before his seminal ""Arithmetices Principia..."", in which he further improves his logical symbolism, which is introduced in the preliminary section of the present work. ""This section, which has almost no connection with the rest of the text, is a synthesis of, and improvement on, some of the work of Boole, Schröder, Peirce, and McColl."" (D.S.B. X:442).In the other present work, ""Applicazioni geometriche del calcolo infinitesimale"", Peano introduces the basic elements of geometric calculus and gives new definitions for the length of an arc and for the area of a curved surface. This important work (in which not only his geometrical calculus is introduced, but in which he also presented several new geometrical discoveries) is based on his lectures on infinitesimal calculus and its application to geometry from 1885. ""The treatise ""Applicazioni geometriche del calcolo infinitesimal"" (1887) was based on a course Peano began teaching at the University of Turin in 1885 and contains the beginnings of his ""geometrical calculus"" (here still influenced by Bellavitis' method of equipolences), new forms of remainders in quadrature formulas, new definitions of length of an arc of a curve and of area of a surface, the notion of a figure tangent to a curve, a determination of the error term in Simpson's formula, and the notion of the limit of a variable figure.
