‎First printing of two importent papers by Monge in differential functions and infinitesimal geometry, - in the first he discussed the nature of the arbitrary functions involved in the integrals of, finite difference equations. He also considered the, equation of vibrating strings, a topic he later investigated more fully. In the second memoir Monge returned to infinitesimal geometry. Working on the theory of developable surfaces outlined by Euler in 1772, he applied it to the problem, of shadows and penumbrae and treated several, problems concerning ruled surfaces. ""It is in this paper that he gives a general representation of developable surfaces...""(Morris Kline ""Mathematical Thoughts from Ancient to Modern Times"", p. 567).‎

‎Concerning Transcendentally Transcendental Functions.‎

‎First printing of Moore probe of the theory of functions produced a clarified treatment of transcendentally transcendental functions.""Rigor and generalization characterized the mathe-matical research of Moore. His research fell principally into the areas of (1) geometry" (2) algebra, groups, and number theory (3) the theory of functions" and (4) integral equations and general analysis. Among these he emphasized the second and fourth areas. In geometry he examined the postulational foundations of Hilbert, as well as the earlier works of Pasch and Peano. He skillfully analyzed the independence of the axioms of Hilbert and formulated a system of axioms for n-dimensional geometry, using points only as undefined elements instead of the points, lines, and planes of Hilbert in the three-dimensional case. During his investigation of the theory of abstract groups, he stated and proved for the first time the important theorem that every finite field is a Galois field (1893). He also discovered that every finite group G of linear transformations on n variables has a Hermitian invariant (1896-1898). His probe of the theory of functions produced a clarified treatment of transcendentally transcendental functions and a proof of Goursat’s extension of the Cauchy integral theorem for a function without the assumption of the continuity of the derivative."" The ""Preface"" is an historical account of Newton's method ""la sublime méthode"", written by Buffon. Without the leaf ""Extrait des Registres"".‎

‎The influential first French edition of Newton's important work, which constitutes the most extensive description of the mathematical method he used in his famous ""Principia"", the method of infinitesimals, which was already written about 1671, but not published until 1736, i.e. posthumously, with the title ""Method of Fluxions and Infinite Series..."". In this work ""Newton stated clearly the fundamental problem of the calculus: the relation of quantities being given, to find the relation of the fluxions of these, and conversely. In conformity with this problem and the new notation, Newton then gave examples of his method....In this book Newton introduced his characteristic notation and conceptions. He regarded his variable quantities as generated by the continuous motion of points, lines and planes, rather than as aggregates of infinitesimal elements, the view which had appeared in ""De analysi""...The rate of generation Newton called a ""fluxion"", designating it by means of a letter with a dot over it, a ""pricked letter"", the quantity generates he called a ""fluent"".( Boyer, The History of the Calculus.).Colson (in his preface to the first edition from 1736) says: ""I gladly embraced the opportunity that was put into my hands, of publishing this posthumous work, because I found it had been composed with that view and design. And that my own Country-men might first enjoy the benefit of this publication, I resolved upon giving it an English translation, with some additional remarks of my own, I thought it highly injurious to the memory and reputation of the real Author, as well as invidious to the glory of our own Nation, that so curious and useful a piece should be any longer suppress'd and confined to a few private hands, which ought to be communicated to all the learned World for general Instruction. It was through the French translations of his works that Newton came to play the seminal role as the most important of mathematicians that he did in France, and particularly the years around 1740, when the present work appeared in French for the first time were seminal to the scientific development in France, where the likes of Voltaire had only just made the nation acquinted with the work of the great mathematician. ‎"PAINLEVÉ, PAUL.‎

‎Sur les équations différentielles du second ordre et d'ordre supérieur dont l'intégrale générale est uniforme. - [PAINLEVÉ TRANSCENDENTALS]‎

‎Berlin, Stockholm, Paris, Beijer, 1902. 4to. Bound in contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In ""Acta Mathematica"", Vol, 25, 1902. Entire volume offered. Stamps to title page, otherwise a fine and clean copy. pp. 1-86.[Entire volume: (4), 383 pp].‎

‎First appearance of Painlevé's important paper in which he introduced some of his transcendents, now know as ""Painlevé transcendents"".Painlevé transcendents are solutions to certain nonlinear second-order ordinary differential equations in the complex plane with the Painlevé property (the only movable singularities are poles), but which are not generally solvable in terms of elementary functions. ""In old problems in which the difficulties seemed insurmountable, Painlevé defined new transcendentals for singular points of differential equations of a higher order than the first. In particular he determined every equation of the second order and first degree whose critical points are fixed. The results of these studies are applicable to the equations of analytical mechanics which admit rational or algebraic first integrals with respect to the velocities. Proving, in the words of Hadamard’s éloge, that ""continuing [the work of] Henri Poincaré was not beyond human capacity,"" Painlevé extended the known results concerning the n-body problem. He also corrected certain accepted results in problems of friction and of the conditions of certain equilibriums when the force function does not pass through a maximum.""Paul Painlevé later became the French prime minister.‎
