br. Chi di noi non ha mai guardato un filmato di gatti sul web? Ammettiamolo, sono davvero carini, fanno acrobazie straordinarie e riescono ad atterrare sempre in piedi. Quest'ultima caratteristica è quasi proverbiale e ha contribuito non poco ad alimentare la leggenda delle loro nove vite. Eppure scienziati, matematici e pensatori hanno faticato a capire come fanno i gatti a compiere certi movimenti; le teorie che hanno proposto coinvolgono diverse branche della fisica e della biologia. Gregory J. Gbur ha ricostruito con precisione e arguzia la storia scientifica della sinuosa elasticità dei gatti: l'entusiasmo del XIX secolo - ben prima dell'odierna invasione sui social -, gli esperimenti temerari, il paradosso di Schrödinger, le ipotesi bizzarre e anche l'imbarazzata ammissione della comunità scientifica di non riuscire a comprendere la meccanica dei loro mirabolanti atterraggi. Nel 1969 questa elegante mossa felina (battezzata «piega e torci») è stata finalmente spiegata, ma il gatto ha continuato a far parlare di sé: come protagonista di ricerche sul movimento degli astronauti in assenza di gravità, come modello per la costruzione di robot in grado di rimettersi in piedi senza danni o persino come autore di articoli universitari. "Perché i gatti cadono sempre in piedi" è un'ode ai felini, alle loro misteriose doti fisiche e alle capacità straordinarie che hanno affascinato nei secoli pensatori e scienziati, contribuendo a graffianti rivelazioni sul funzionamento e sulla natura dell'universo.
