Anybody with an interest in the possibilities of life elsewhere must read this book. Before reading "Planet Quest" I was completely ignorant on this subject; I just assumed that someone found the planets sometime ago and that'd be good enough for me. That is no longer the case after going through the pages of "Planet Quest". With a clear simple style of writing the author offered readers like me wonderful insights into the thrilling process of hunting for a new planet. This is a non-fiction work but I felt captivated as if reading Jules Verne novels! When following the stories of planet hunters with their glories and their defeats I could conclude that life is much better than fiction. Good analogies were offered throughout to explain complicated details especially to illustrate those infinite statistics on the immense universe. In this work Kepler explained the theory of refraction by lenses enlarged his system of geometrical and instrumental optics and expounded the principle of the inverting telescope. <br> "Kepler obtained a telescope in 1610 a gift from Ernest Archbishop of Cologne and in his Dioptrice 1611 Kepler discussed its theory. In this work he enlarged upon his ideas on refraction and wrote about the anatomy of the eye. He described for the first time the defect of spherical aberration and stated that it could be overcome by giving optical surfaces hyperboloidal forms . He showed also for the first time that before an object can be seen distinctly its image must be sharply formed on the retina" King The History of the Telescope pp. 44-45. <br> "The immediate impact of Kepler's optical work was not great; but ultimately it changed the course of optics especially after his Dioptrice 1611 which applied these principles to the telescope. 'Optical tubes' had been discussed in Giambattista della Porta's Magia naturalis 1589; but Kepler confessed that 'I disparaged them most vigorously and no wonder for he obviously mixes up the incredible with the probable.' Thus Kepler who himself used spectacles discussed lenses only in passing in his Astronomiae pars optica. Nevertheless he had set forth the essential background by which the formation of images with lenses could be explained and so he was able to complete his Dioptrice within six months after he had received Galileo's Sidereus nuncius 1610. With great thoroughness Kepler described the optics of lenses including a new kind of astronomical telescope with two convex lenses. The preface declares 'I offer you friendly reader a mathematical book that is a book that is not so easy to understand' but his severely mathematical approach only serves to place the Dioptrice all the more firmly in the mainstream of seventeenth-century science." Khinchin Graduated From The University In 1916 And Six Years Later He Became A Full Professor There Retaining That Position Until His Death. Khinchin's Early Works Focused On Real Analysis. Later He Applied Methods From The Metric Theory Of Functions To Problems In Probability Theory And Number Theory. He Became One Of The Founders Of Modern Probability Theory Discovering The Law Of The Iterated Logarithm In 1924 Achieving Important Results In The Field Of Limit Theorems Giving A Definition Of A Stationary Process And Laying A Foundation For The Theory Of Such Processes. Khinchin Made Significant Contributions To The Metric Theory Of Diophantine Approximations And Established An Important Result For Simple Real Continued Fractions Discovering A Property Of Such Numbers That Leads To What Is Now Known As Khinchin's Constant. He Also Published Several Important Works On Statistical Physics Where He Used The Methods Of Probability Theory And On Information Theory Queuing Theory And Mathematical Analysis. In 1939 Khinchin Was Elected As A Correspondent Member Of The Academy Of Sciences Of The Ussr. He Was Awarded The Stalin Prize 1941 The Order Of Lenin Three Other Orders And Medals <br/> <br/> Dover Publications hardcover
