Faitlovitch, Jacques
Quer durch Abessinien - Meine zweite Reise zu den Falaschas. Mit 60 Illustrationen nach Originalaufnahmen und einer geographischen Karte
RARE travel book describing the second journey made by Jacques Faitlovitch (1881-1955), who traveled to Ethiopia for the first time in 1904, with support from the French banker Baron Edmond de Rothschild. An Ashkenazi Jew born in Lodz in Poland, Faitlovitch later became a student of Ethiopian languages in the Sorbonne under the renowned Jewish-French Orientalist and traveler Joseph Halévy (1827-1917), who in 1868 was sent by the Alliance Israélite Universelle to Abyssinia to study the conditions of the Falashas. Often called the "father of the Falashas", Faitlovitch was a man who devoted his life to the cause of his “Black brethren” in Abyssinia, indirectly contributing to their immigration to Israel. He visited eleven times the Falashas bringing back dozens of Falasha manuscripts, objects and books, writing reports which still remain a source of ethnographic information for researchers today, creating pro-Falasha committees and mobilizing the international community to encourage the immigration of this community towards what was then Palestine and later Israel. Contains 1 folding map of Abyssinia and 60 b&w photographs. 230x160mm. 188 pages. Illustrated gray Hardcover. Cover stained (no damage to illustration). Cover corners bumped. Spine hinges partly cracked, edges missing. Spine partly torn. Pages VI-VII, X-XI, 176-179 and 182-183 taped in between the pages - NO damage to text. Page 177 bottom edge slightly (35mm) torn - NO damage to text. Pages VII-X and 177-182 edges worn. Pages 93 and 95 upper corners slightly creased. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare book has sustained some damage, but is still in good reading condition.
