Ma cosa significa davvero bruciare i libri. È solo il gesto violento di una censura o nasconde di più? Testimone diretto del rogo nazista del maggio 1933, Löwenthal traccia in questo saggio, scritto dopo il suo ritorno in Germania alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale, un percorso che dalla Cina del III secolo a.C. arriva fino ai giorni nostri. Come ricorda Giuseppe Montesano nel suo saggio che accompagna le pagine di Löwenthal, dare fuoco alla cultura, alla conoscenza e alla memoria (anche sotto forma di piccoli atti quotidiani di rimozione, scintilla apparentemente innocua ma facilmente infiammabile) si rivela più che mai come il gesto simbolico di un'autodistruzione. Punta di un iceberg che dalle pagine dei libri arriva dritta al corpo vivo dell'umanità.‎
