Scritti nel corso degli anni Settanta e tradotti in diverse lingue, i cinque opuscoli che compongono questo libro sono stati considerati per lungo tempo l'ispirazione teorica del terrorismo di sinistra nel nostro paese. All'indomani dell'arresto del loro autore, il 7 aprile 1979, con l'accusa di essere a capo di un'insurrezione armata contro i poteri dello Stato, questi opuscoli, nonostante la loro fortuna editoriale, sparirono dalle librerie e furono inviati al macero. Seguirono gli anni di una corale demonizzazione: giudici, politici, sindacalisti, giornalisti, storici, intellettuali e accademici citarono ripetutamente passi di questi scritti definendoli "irrazionali", "deliranti", "criminali", frutto insomma della mente di un "cattivo maestro". I giudizi più benevoli si limitarono invece a definirli "estremisti", "idealisti", "anarcoidi", "dannunziani". Ma ora, a trent'anni di distanza, quelle teorizzazioni possono apparire in una luce completamente diversa. Molto dell'attuale dibattito sulle grandi trasformazioni in atto nel nostro paese e in tutto il mondo è riscontrabile nelle analisi contenute in questi scritti; così come sono innegabili alcune intuizioni sulle radicali modificazioni dei processi produttivi e sulla crisi irreversibile della rappresentanza politica.

I movimenti «senza leader» a livello globale - da Gezi Park e Piazza Tharir a Occupy Wall Street, da Black Lives Matter agli Indignados a Ni Una Menos - hanno contestato le politiche governative e alle volte rovesciato regimi, ma senza riuscire ad attuare un cambiamento duraturo. Come realizzarlo? Dopo "Impero, moltitudine e comune", Hardt e Negri individuano nell'assemblea la capacità di ripensare la democrazia e realizzare il «comune» superando la proprietà privata. «Assemblea» indica sia una forma di riunione e decisione politica sia la catena di montaggio contemporanea, l'assembly line del capitalismo cognitivo che oggi compie la «produzione e la riproduzione sociale»; sia il luogo di contestazione sia lo spazio di organizzazione positiva di forme produttive e sociali alternative. Attraverso le tre figure di Efesto, Dioniso ed Ermete, gli autori descrivono il nuovo «Principe» della moltitudine, in grado di modificare il reale dal punto di vista politico ed economico: i movimenti «senza leader», infatti, non solo hanno già ripensato un'idea forte e innovativa di democrazia oltre la rappresentanza, ma sono stati anche in grado di prefigurare una vera e propria «impresa» economica capace di organizzare in modo autonomo la produzione e la distribuzione di ricchezza a prescindere dai dettami che il capitalismo impone.

Come suggerisce l'autore - Heinrich Neuhaus, musicista, critico, ma soprattutto il memorabile maestro di esecutori che hanno cambiato l'arte pianistica in occidente - avrebbe potuto altrettanto bene avere come titolo: Sulla comprensione della musica e sulla sua esecuzione. Il messaggio fondamentale è di tipo umanistico: il pianista vero deve prima di tutto capire la musica che esegue, il suo significato, «l'essenza»; e dunque occorrono per questo - accanto e prima dell'abile addestramento delle dita - riflessione, cultura, etica e spirito. Come un bravo critico d'arte svela la tecnica del pittore per far entrare chi guarda dentro la piena interpretazione di un dipinto, così Neuhaus utilizza le minuzie della tecnica per far entrare chi ascolta dentro la musica, dentro ciò che il genio creatore dei compositori voleva esprimere (o dentro il vuoto della musica quando non è che ripetitività). Questo è il suo scopo: «una rinascita del suono» dalla scrittura musicale. Egli confessa di credere che ai due poli dell'attività intellettuale degli esseri umani vi siano la matematica e la musica. E dunque la comprensione della musica in queste pagine rappresenta lo sforzo da tentare per corrispondere a un più universale desiderio di senso.
