Nel dibattito corrente e ricorrente sulla crisi della critica letteraria, prevale quasi sempre l'implicito rimpianto per un vecchio profilo, quello del grande maestro dotato di sensibilità non comune, insindacabile arbitro del gusto e dispensatore di utili consigli sulle letture convenienti. Questo pamphlet prova ad andare oltre una simile impostazione istituzionale e professionale, a riportare la questione alla radice, alla crisi odierna della letteratura nel suo complesso, sconfitta nella guerra dei media e invano ridipinta mediante l'enfasi coatta dell'emotività oppure con il moralismo della verità del contenuto. Dalla polemica contro il senso comune e la terminologia inverificabile e autoritaria dell'estetica tradizionale, prende qui corpo la controproposta di una lettura attenta del testo, insensibile alla facile partecipazione, un'interrogazione delle tendenze e delle strategie profonde della scrittura che manifesti l'esigenza di rapportare la pratica letteraria a una criticità diffusa e comune a tutti. Così intesa in senso largo, la critica non risulta più appannaggio degli esperti e degli addetti ai lavori, ma si rivela organo vitale dell'insoddisfazione per l'esistente, strumento indispensabile che riguarda perciò - adattando una battuta brechtiana - tutti "quelli a cui non piace" il mondo così com'è.
