Con scrittura affilata ricostruisce i tratti di un'arte capace di farsi pratica insurrezionale, libera da ogni imperativo di esibirsi, rappresentare, educare, incarnare valori o servire una causa o un padrone. Per Victor Stoichita, uno degli storici dell'arte più autorevoli dei nostri giorni, il personaggio di Hitchcock, voyeur e detective al tempo stesso, incarna le caratteristiche dello sguardo con cui le arti visive, fin dall'avvento dell'Impressionismo, sembrano chiedere di essere osservate. La potenza del «gioco della rappresentazione» chiama lo spettatore, proiettato in un mondo di ostacoli e incertezze, privo di una storia immediatamente leggibile, a farsi Sherlock Holmes, per orientarsi nell'affascinante, densa coltre delle interpretazioni possibili. Fu la «Nuova pittura» impressionista a mettere in luce l'importanza di ciò che nel dispositivo del quadro si sottrae all'osservazione, è fuori campo, nascosto o troppo piccolo per essere visto. Da allora, l'immagine artistica appare di frequente come un «luogo del delitto». "Effetto Sherlock" è dunque un dittico: la prima tavola è consacrata alla rivoluzione dell'esperienza visuale portata in particolare da Manet, Degas e Caillebotte; la seconda esplora - attraverso capolavori quali La signora scompare e La finestra sul cortile di Alfred Hitchcok e Blow Up di Michelangelo Antonioni - la capacità dell'arte cinematografica di realizzare esperimenti sullo sguardo e di proporre uno «spettacolo ottico». Che si parli di pittura, cinema o arte contemporanea, l'«effetto Sherlock» non è allora che l'esercizio intellettuale della rivelazione. Ma se i romanzi gialli si concludono con la vittoria indiscussa della ragione, per Stoichita davanti all'immagine nessun mistero può essere definitivamente risolto. Pur con questa consapevolezza, però, non possiamo non farci investigatori: solo grazie al nostro sguardo indagatore l'arte acquista profondità e senso.

L'illusione narcisistica dell'autocontrollo è oggi vertiginosamente alimentata dalle seduzioni della simulazione digitale dei processi sociali, da un lato, e dal dilagare di un'euforia pseudo-libertaria al godimento pulsionale, dall'altro. La sociologia richiamata da Bauman, da una parte, non ha cessato di aiutarci a capire vite di scarto, paure endemiche e capri espiatori. Il femminismo, dall'altra, è intervenuto a liberarci da questa illusione pseudo-libertaria, in nome di una libertà più vera, inscritta in un orizzonte relazionale e politico solidale, non più narciso-individualistico. Vi è il rischio, tuttavia, che le battaglie femministe, intese come movimento, finiscano col perdere la loro carica di liberazione, per un eccesso di istituzionalizzazione nella liquida governance globale. Dinanzi a questo le femministe sono chiamate a formulare una riconsiderazione critica, non solo della realtà, ma anche dei meccanismi di lotta e della propria cultura politica.

La storia che qui si intende fare è infatti quella dell'evoluzione del lavoro dell'artista, nella fabbricazione del capolavoro che "nasce sempre, dalla preistoria ad oggi, con una finalità specifica, che può essere, di volta in volta, di carattere pratico, simbolico, allegorico, economico, filosofico, decorativo"; in una formidabile galleria di personaggi grandissimi e di moltissimi dimenticati: dove cioè meglio sono rintracciabili contesti e circostanze, abitudini e tecniche, culture e ambienti, condizioni psicologiche, posizioni religiose e politiche. E l'arco temporale scelto è quello dall'Umanesimo e dal Rinascimento fino alla fine del Seicento, l'epoca in cui, dimostra l'autore, l'unità tra la competenza tecnica e la sostanza espressiva caratterizzava tipicamente e meravigliosamente il mestiere dell'artista.
