This popular American cartoonist and illustrator trained under "Flash Gordon" cartoonist Alex Raymond before taking over that strip briefly and also the "Secret Agent X-9" strip; co-founded the Famous Artists School; in 1969 he was elected to the Society of Illustrators' Hall of Fame. Signed Postal Cover 6½" X 3½" n.p. n.y. NOT a First Day Cover but a mint example of Briggs' 1959 7-cent "Jupiter" balloon stamp is affixed at upper right. At lower left in black ballpoint Briggs signs large and bold adding "Designer." With original transmittal envelope Paris 1970. A superb example. unknown

U.S. senators from Indiana. Most unusual item: single leaf 7¼" X 9¼" probably the frontispiece of an Indiana state history captioned "Indiana" at the top. Below this is a charming stone lithographed pastoral scene depicting a shirtless man in the foreground chopping down a tree vast fields extending behind him; the sun is just breaking over the horizon and a bull is romping playfully. Facsimile signatures of Indiana senators Albert S. White and Edward A. Hannegan appear below this. Their Senate terms overlapped from 1845 to '49 thus dating this frontispiece. Their two successors Bright who served 1845-62 and Whitcomb 1849-52 have each signed boldly beneath the facsimiles. Very good. Moderately foxed throughout but overall attractive. An interesting pairing of Hoosiers on an appropriate if odd item. Whitcomb died in office while Bright was expelled from the Senate for treason. unknown

ALS 2pp 4" X 7" Rothdale 1877 September 16. Addressed to W.H.I. Aubrey. Very good. Would be fine except for mounting trace along left edge. Envious note to a friend about to visit the United States; suggests a couple contacts although he comments "I have few friends or acquaintances in the States to whom I can give or send letters of introduction" one of them financier Cyrus W. I believe other depart's are the same. The road is terribly crowded & full of disappointment. I advise you to stay in Birmingham - you will more easily get 10 good places there than one in a Gvt. depart't. To put your name down for a nomination would be of no use. You would be at the bottom of a long list, & should probably never be reached till you were beyond the age at which you could be admitted. I am sorry to give you no hope that I can help you [...]". - The Liberal statesman Bright, hailed as one of the greatest orators of his generation, served as MP for Birmingham from 1858 to 1889. In 1868 he had entered Gladstone's cabinet as President of the Board of Trade. - From the collection of John Henderson (1862-1938), the long-serving secretary of the National Liberal Club.

Large 8vo. 1¾ pp. on bifolium. In Italian. To the lawyer and politician Felice Vallegia, who had inquired about the possibility of purchasing a ship that had been decommissioned by the Italian Navy: "I hasten to confirm to Your Excellency that the Royal Navy does not now possess any ship in the condition you indicated, as all the ships considered by law for alienation have been sold or scrapped. Only the royal battleship 'Count Verder' remains, which has been disbarred from the naval cadres [...] but [...] is in such a state of decay that it could in no way be put back into service [...]" (transl.). - Vallegia's autograph note, dated Rome 24 October 1884, on fol. 2v reads: "just today was I able to speak with Brin. I wanted a written reply so that you may better know how things stand [...]" (transl.). - Brin held the post of Minister of the Navy several times between 1876 and 1896. Under Giolitti in 1892/93, he also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs. - On stationery with printed letterhead "Ministry of the Navy."

4to. 1 p. Inscription in: G. Renato, Remo Brindisi (Milano: Edizioni del Centro culturale di San Fedele, 1955), 4 lines. Together with a typed "biographical note" on Renato Brindisi dated 13 March 1956. To the Austrian art historian Franz Fuhrmann, thanking him for several days spent in Salzburg and expressing his awe of the "incomparable beauty of nature and human creations" in the city. - Brindisi had an exhibition at Galerie Welz in March 1956 that was opened with a presentation by Franz Fuhrmann. During his stay he met the expressionist painter Oskar Kokoschka, who influenced his later work. Inspired by the beauty and history of the city, Brindisi painted "Salzburg - Mozartplatz" in 1956. - The inscription was written to thank Fuhrmann for his presentation. The "biographical note" in German with its added underlinings and annotations probably served Fuhrmann for his presentation. - Well preserved.

This Australian-born American artist and illustrator illustrated "Saturday Evening Post" covers World War Two war bond posters and a number of U.S. stamps and cards including the 1975 "World Peace Through Law" stamp. Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in San Diego California on 1971 October 29 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Set of four "Historic Preservation" stamps at upper right. Near the bottom running almost the full length of the envelope Brindle signs large and bold in black ballpoint adding "Designer" afterward. Small portion of original transmittal envelope also present. unknown

To an unidentified editor, asking him to reprint an article from the French daily "L'Estafette" about the first concert of his son Henri ten Brink, a student of the Belgian violin virtuoso Martin-Pierre Marsick: "Mon fils Henri, élève de Marsick, vient de faire ses débuts dans le monde musical et a obtenu un beau succès. Je vous serais reconnaissant si vous vouliez bien reproduire le petit article ci-inclus et découpé dans l'Estafette". - Jules ten Brink was a student of Auguste Dupont in Brussels and Ernst Friedrich Richter in Leipzig. He worked as a bandmaster in Lyon from 1860 to 1868 and later as a piano teacher and composer in Paris. Ten Brink's compositions include an orchestral suite (1874), a symphonic poem (1876), a symphony, two violin concertos, as well as the comic operas Calonice (1869/1870) and Mascarille (1888). After his studies in Paris, Henri ten Brink (1856-1920) emigrated to South Africa, where he worked as a musician and composer. - Minor browning. Well preserved. Longue lettre au sujet de publications à l'occasion du bi-centenaire de la naissance de Goethe.Il envoie les pages sur le Faust de Jacobsen… Vous voyez si je suis ponctuel. Il n'a pas encore prêtes les notes sur l'histoire de l'art, c'est que la mise en forme de toutes les idées est très longue et très difficile… Suite au manque d'intérêt ou de la défection des éditeurs il se trouve avec quelques beaux manuscrits sur les bras… ce qui me gène beaucoup pour les amis qui me les avaient confiés. D'autre part, les Éditions de la Colombe, en grosses difficultés elles aussi, ne peuvent sortir en temps voulu le volume des " plus belles pages de Goethe " que j'avais préparé pour elles à l'occasion du centenaire goethéen. Je me demande si ce volume, peut-être, ne vous intéresserait pas : il contient une importante introduction et des " chapeaux " pour chaque œuvre, le meilleur de Goethe prose et poésie (celle-ci dans des traductions nouvelles, et, je l'espère, bonnes) plus d'une centaine de pages de sentences, aphorismes, fragments divers, résumant la sagesse de Goethe…
