8vo (134 x 204 mm). Engraving on paper. Together with two newspaper clippings. Léopold Flameng's engraving is a reproduction of a photograph of Gérard de Nerval by Félix Nadar from around 1854/55. It appeared posthumously in "L'Artiste", a weekly illustrated review that had published many of Nerval's works. - The older newspaper clipping is Pierre Dax's obituary for Gérard de Nerval's father (L'Artiste, 5 June 1859). The second article is a speculative account of Nerval's "alleged suicide" that was published by "L'Illustration" on 30 January 1932, roughly 77 years after the writer's death. - All with traces of former mounting.

Residenz genügenden Schauspielhauses [d. i. das neu zu errichtende Theater am Franz Josef-Quai] nicht in Angriff nehmen konnte, so ermächtige ich hierdurch nachstehende Vertreter der Gesellschaft des kk: priv. Carltheaters | den Oberregisseur Herrn Louis Grois | den Regisseur Herrn J. B. Lang | den Decorateur Herrn Moriz Lehmann | den Secretair Herrn FranzTreumann, | indem ich die, mir durch Allerhöchste Gnade verliehene Concession sammt allen andren, mir durch die Behörde zur Errichtung eines Interims-Theaters gewährten Benefizien oben genannten Herrn anzuvertraun, den Bau eines Interims-Theaters unverzüglich auf meine Kosten in Angriff zu nehmen und zwar unter folgenden Bedingungen [...]". - Carl Treumann - 1847 nach Wien gekommen, auf Empfehlung Franz von Suppès an das Theater an der Wien verpflichtet und in Volksstücken und musikalischen Lustspielen erfolgreich - trat seit 1852 neben Johann Nestroy und Wenzel Scholz am Carltheater auf. Seines Amtes seit 1858 müde geworden, befürwortete Nestroy Treumann als Nachfolger des von ihm seit Karl Carls Tod 1854 geführten Hauses. "Es kam aber anders. Treumann übernahm nicht das Carl-Theater, sondern das Theater am Franz Josef-Quai, das nicht lange bestand; 1863 fiel es einem Brand zum Opfer" (Basil, Nestroy. Rowohlts Monographien132. Reinbek b. Hbg., 1996, S. 149). Erst nach dem Brand als Direktor des Carl-Theaters bestellt, erwarb sich Treumann "große Verdienste um die Operette, indem er die Operetten Jacques Offenbachs in Wien einführte, deren Texte Treumann zum Teil selbst übersetzte. Er verfaßte auch das Libretto für die Operette 'Prinz Methusalem' von Johann Strauß" (DBE). Vgl. auch Czeike V, 476.

Enclosed 2 maps in folio (route map, ca. 430 x 530 mm; and geological map, ca. 385 x 510 mm) and 14 black-and-white photographs of in formats (94 x 119 to 138 x 180 mm). Mostly in French, occasionally English. With supplemental material (see description). The central element of the collection is the organisation, research and scientific interest devoted to the expeditions of the "Calpyso" of the ocean explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau (1910-97) to the Red Sea and Madagascar, and to the expeditions of the "Président Théodore Tissier" under Captain Roger Brenot (1916-98) to the Porcupine Bank in the Celtic Sea. The letters are addressed predominantly to the geographer André Guilcher (1913-93) and give evidence of the scholarly exchange within the contemporary French research community, including the geophysicist Jean Coulomb (1904-99), the underwater pioneer Philippe Talliez (1905-2002), the marine biologist Louis Fage (1883-1964), the geologist Jean Furnestin (1905-90), the geographer André Cailleux (1907-86), the volcanologist Tazieff Haroun (1914-98), and some British scientists (A. Robinson, J. N. Carruthers). - The collection includes two letters from Jacques-Yves Cousteau and six letters from his father Daniel P. Cousteau, who replied to Guilcher in his son's absence in the early 1950s. Jean Coulomb mentions a rumour about difficulties in financing Cousteau's expedition (25 Aug. 1951) and writes about problems obtaining measuring equipment. - In the twelve letters of a certain Berthier to Guilcher, the preparations for the Porcupine expedition of 1957 are discussed, with detailed remarks by Berthier on a theory of the formation of submarine rock deposits. In the letters of Captain Roger Brenot concerning the same voyage, he first welcomes Guilcher to join the expedition (11 Feb.), later withdrawing the invitation (22 Feb.), as only those called upon by the "Ministère de la Marine Marchande" are allowed on board. In another letter, Brenot comments on photographs sent to him, which might not be as useful scientifically as they are for remembrance (21 March). - The enclosed photographs show coral reefs in seven underwater shots, one shot with swirls of the sea surface above La Chapelle Bank (Celtic Sea), according to the enclosed note from 1958, four shots of a barren landscape with mountains and flocks of sheep, and another shot with a pair of sunglasses on a rock formation. A map shows the route of the "N. O. President Th. Tissier", the other map details submarine rock sites. Both of these are spirit duplicated and concern the Celtic Sea. - Six letters with printed letterhead of the "Institut de Physique du Globe", University of Paris, three letters from the "Campagnes océanographiques françaises", four from the "Institut scientifique et technique des peches maritimes", one letter with letterhead of the "National Institute of Oceanography" (Wormley, Surrey), another from the "Department of Geography, University College" (Leicester), one letter from the "Expédition polaires Francaises" and the stamp "Expédition Arctique", twelve letters with the printed letterhead of the "École Nationale d'Agriculture de Rennes", one of which also has the stamp "Laboratoire de Lithologie-Pédologie-Hydrogéologie", and one letter from the "Institut océanographique" (Paris). - Also enclosed is the illustrated book "Calypso Cousteau / Sivirine" (Édition Robert Laffont, [1978] 1998) with numerous photographs and colour illustrations, as well as a large folding plate on the conversions, equipment and expeditions of the "Calypso" and a postcard and a form for the library correspondence of Guilcher. Occasional light foxing and brown stains, with traces of rust from old paper clips, occasional minor marginal tears, one letter J.-Y. Cousteau with stronger marginal tears. Listing on request.

An seine Schwester und deren Mann, bezüglich der Abhandlung des Nachlasses des polnischen Fürsten und Musikers Michal Kazimierz Oginski, Großhetman von Litauen, und der politischen Verhältnisse nach der Dritten Polnischen Teilung 1795: "Hiermit bekenne den Empfang Ihres [...] Schreibens, welches ich mit vielem Vergnügen den 2ten Augusti erhalten habe und daraus ersehen, wie Sie zwar gesund sind, aber daß es Ihnen nicht nach Wunsche ergeht, welches letztere mir sehr unangenehm war zu vernehmen. Sobald ich so glücklich seyn werde mein Vermächtnis von dem Seel. Grafen Oginski in meine Hände zu bekommen, so werde ich trachten auch Ihnen samt meiner lieben Schwester etwas mitzutheilen. Es sind schon 2½ Jahre vorbey daß der Graf gestorben ist, und noch bis dato ist das Testament nicht ausgeführt worden. Einige Diener des Seel. Grafens die in Warschau waren, sind schon befriediget, aber weil hier in Lithauen noch viele Schulden zu tilgen sind, so müssen erst diese befriediget werden, und dann wird erst das Vermächtniß Statt haben, dieses kan aber noch eine Zeit dauern, also haben Sie noch Geduld, bis hier in Lithauen die glückliche Stunde schlagen wird, alsdann werde ich auch meine Liebste Schwester gewiß nicht vergessen [...] In unserem Lande ist alles bey der alten Einrichtung geblieben, das Land wird so regiret wie es vor diesem war, als noch Pohlen existierte, der Kayßer von Rußland hat denen Prowintzen (die Er in Besitz genohmen hat) alle Ihre alten Rechte, und Privilegien gelassen, wir därfen hier über nichts klagen, und besonders ich als ein Ausländer, und Musicus von der freyen Kunst, denn diese sind von allen Abgaben frey [...]". - Der Musiker, Dichter und Staatsmann Oginski beherrschte die Violine, Klarinette und Harfe (der Artikel über letzteres Instrument in Diderots "Encyclopédie" stammt von ihm); er trat als Komponist von Opern, Balletten, Liedern und Tänzen hervor. "From 1771 Oginski maintained an opera company with ballet and orchestra at his residence at Slonim, Lithuania; it had a large repertory of Polish, Italian, French and German operas and symphonies" (New Grove XIII, 518).

Fine German Original typescript letter signed 'Souchon', addressed to Capitan, lieutenant colonel Vasif (Wassif) Muhiddin Bey [Kasimpasali]. Wassif Bey was a ship commander of Hamidiye cruiser before Rauf Orbay. 27x21 cm. In German. 1 p. "Kommando der Flotte" letterhead with bilingual in German and Ottoman Turkish. 8 lines. Signed 'Souchon'. This letter includes an indication that it honors the Kaiser (Wilhelm II) with the Iron Cross medal for Commander of Haamidiye, Wassif Bey. "Seine Majestät der Kaiser und König haben Euer Hochwohlgeboren in Anbetracht Ihrer tatkraftigen Arbeit im Interesse der Kriegsbereitschaft und Kriegsbereitschaft und Kriegsbedürfnisse der Marine das Eiserne Kreuz 2. Klasse zu verleihen geruht.". [i.e. His Majesty the Emperor and King have deigned your High Wellbeing to give the Iron Cross 2nd Class to the Navy in view of your hard work in the interest of readiness for war needs.]. Wilhelm Anton Souchon was a German admiral in World War I. Souchon commanded the Kaiserliche Marine's Mediterranean squadron in the early days of the war. His initiative played a major part in the entry of the Ottoman Empire into World War I. Wilhelm Anton Souchon was born on 2 June 1864 in Germany to a family of Huguenot ancestry. In July 1914, hostilities erupted between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Serbia. Rear Admiral Souchon, a native of Leipzig, feared being trapped in the Adriatic Sea in the event of other nations joining in the conflict. Because of this, Souchon took his two ships, the battlecruiser Goeben and the light cruiser Breslau, into the western Mediterranean. When World War I began on 4 August 1914, he bombarded the French-Algerian ports of Bône and Philippeville. He successfully eluded British attempts to corner him (see Pursuit of Goeben and Breslau) and on 10 August 1914, his small squadron arrived at the Dardanelles. After two days of negotiations, he was allowed to take his ships to Istanbul where they were subsequently transferred officially into the Ottoman Navy. Souchon was appointed Commander-in-chief of the Ottoman Navy and served in this position until September 1917. This gesture by Germany had an enormously positive impact with the Turkish population. At the outbreak of the war, Winston Churchill caused outrage when he "requisitioned" without compensation two almost completed Turkish battleships in British shipyards, Sultan Osman I and Reshadieh, that had been financed by public subscription. These ships were commissioned into the Royal Navy as Agincourt and Erin, respectively. On 15 August 1914, in the aftermath of Souchon's daring dash to Constantinople, Turkey cancelled their maritime agreement with Britain and the Royal Navy mission under Admiral Limpus, and left by 15 September. The Dardanelles were fortified with German assistance and the Bosporus was secured by the presence of Goeben (now Yavuz Sultan Selim). On 27 September 1914, the Straits were officially closed to all international shipping. On 29 October 1914, Souchon's fleet launched the Black Sea Raid, a naval attack which brought the Ottoman Empire into World War I. His ships laid several sea minefields and shelled the Russian Black Sea ports of Sevastopol, Odessa, and others, destroying the Russian minesweeper, Prut, in the process. British naval units quickly retaliated on Turkish merchant ships off Izmir (Smyrna). On 2 November 1914, Russia declared war on the Ottoman Empire. On 5 November, Britain followed suit and on 12 November 1914, the Ottoman government officially declared war on the Triple Entente. For the next three years, Souchon attempted to reform the Ottoman Navy while conducting a number of raids on Russian shipping, ports, and coastal installations in the Black Sea. Promoted to vice admiral, Souchon was awarded the Pour le Mérite, Germany's highest military order, on 29 October 1916. In September 1917, Souchon returned to Germany. A handwritten note in Dutch on verso: "Antilope wegende 40 a 50 kilos geschoten 10 November 1911" [i.e. Antelope weighing 40 to 50 kilos shot November 10, 1911], and signed "Joseph Devos". Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript document sent to the Ottoman court with postal stamps "OPDA" (Ottoman Public Debt Administration) [= Osmanli Kamu Borç Idaresi] ve "HJZ" (Hejaz Railway) [= Hicaz Demiryollari]. 28x21,5 cm. In Arabic. 1 p. 11 lines. On a paper with Grifon and "W" initial and "Original" watermarks. Paper probably from a British paper manufacturer produced the paper for the Middle Eastern market. It starts with "Yüksek Islâm Meclisi Re'isi Âlîsi'ne". There is talk of a deal made by the Safed mufti and the person concerned - stating that he has been waiting for two years for an unpaid amount after an agreement with a certain amount of Egyptian junaihs, Safed mufti demands that the rest of the money. Sayyidî, who states that he is getting older and that the money must be kept in order to be able to do the title deeds from the foundations, says that otherwise the title deed procedures will not be completed. Signed by Safed mufti named Seyyidî. On the bottom, signed by/as "Reisü'l Camiü'l Islâmiü'l Âlî, Mehmed (or, Muhammed) Sehvî]. "Safed is a city in the Northern District of Israel. Located at an elevation of 900 meters (2,953 ft), Safed is the highest city in the Galilee and in Israel. Safed has been identified with Sepph, a fortified town in the Upper Galilee mentioned in the writings of the Roman Jewish historian Josephus. The Jerusalem Talmud mentions it as one of five elevated spots where fires were lit to announce the New Moon and festivals during the Second Temple period. Safed attained local prominence under the Crusaders, who built a large fortress there in 1168. It was conquered by Saladin 20 years later, and demolished by his grandnephew al-Mu'azzam Isa in 1219. After reverting to the Crusaders in a treaty in 1240, a larger fortress was erected, which was expanded and reinforced in 1268 by the Mamluk sultan Baybars, who developed Safed into a major town and the capital of a new province spanning the Galilee. After a century of general decline, the stability brought by the Ottoman conquest in 1517 ushered in nearly a century of growth and prosperity in Safed, during which time Jewish immigrants from across Europe developed the city into a center for wool and textile production and the mystical Kabbalah movement. It became known as one of the Four Holy Cities of Judaism. As the capital of the Safad Sanjak, it was the main population center of the Galilee, with large Muslim and Jewish communities.".

Legal documents of the Pazzini family. Castel Corno, Isera, Rovereto, and other places, 1667-1717.
Small folio (ca. 230 x 315 mm). Italian, Latin, and German manuscript on paper. Ca. (254) pp. Sewn in contemporary carta rustica binding. An interesting collection of legal documents, compiled c. 1720, that sheds light on the legal bearings of an Italian family of the lesser nobility from Isera near Rovereto during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The mostly notarized copies of over 60 legal proceedings and some original documents comprise financial records of a parish, last wills of relatives, various kinds contracts, and court documents.The most prominent co-contractor of the Pazzini is count Paris Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn (d. after 1693), lord of Castel Corno near Isera. A contract with an otherwise unknown Moritz Ritter von Faboc zu Altessen is written in German, highlighting the proximity of the German and Italian speaking worlds in the Trentino region. The documents were issued by notaries in Isera, Rovereto, and surrounding villages. - Spine broken; some leaves brittle or loose. Occasional water damage, stains, and fading. Minor tears are frequent but rarely affect the text. Generally well preserved.
