One and a half pages written in black ink on letterhead paper from ""Gloriette"" the writer's residence in Nièvre. Transverse fold lines inherent to mailing. Fine letter to this fellow writer alluding to Poil de Carotte: ""Je suis au moins aussi content que vous. Certes je n'avais pas oublié le manuscrit où Poil de Carotte était si bien compris - et aimé - j'avais oublié la signature."" ""I am at least as pleased as you are. Certainly I had not forgotten the manuscript where Poil de Carotte was so well understood - and loved - I had forgotten the signature."" He mentions Gabrielle Réval's book: ""Et tant mieux ; car j'ai lu les Sèvriennes et non le livre d'une amie de Poil de Carotte. L'auteur seul a plu le lecteur seul a été touché. Il y a de belles réussites vous le voyez madame."" ""So much the better; for I read the Sèvriennes and not the book of a friend of Poil de Carotte. The author alone pleased the reader alone was moved. There are beautiful successes you see madam."" Jules Renard already enjoyed considerable success at this time: ""Il me répugnerait de jour au vieux maître sachez pourtant que j'ai déjà reçu bien des livres écrit bien des lettres en quelle proportion par politesse je ne sais plus mais aucune ne fut plus spontanée que celle dont vous me remerciez aimablement."" ""It would repel me to play the old master know however that I have already received many books written many letters in what proportion out of politeness I no longer know but none was more spontaneous than the one for which you thank me kindly."" The highly laudatory letter alluded to here is preserved at the Jean Jaurès Media Library in Nevers and was written by Renard a few days before ours: ""Ce n'est pas l'auteur des Sévriennes que je remercie c'est vous. C'est grâce à vous que j'ai lu par cette froide fin de mai entre la première rose de mon jardin et les dernières flammes de ma cheminée un beau Livre."" ""It is not the author of the Sévriennes that I thank it is you. It is thanks to you that I read during this cold end of May between the first rose of my garden and the last flames of my fireplace a beautiful Book."" Gabrielle Réval was one of the co-founders of the Prix de la Vie heureuse which would later become the Prix Femina. unknown

Folding marks from mailing. An engaging letter in which Jules Romains corresponds with the painter Dignimont about the forthcoming illustrated edition of his sweeping novel cycle Hommes de bonne volonté: ""J'ai beaucoup pensé cette fois-ci encore aux belles compositions que vous nous avez montrées samedi. Je continue à trouver tout cela très important."" Romains' remarks are revealing as they highlight the divergence between how he envisioned his characters and how his friend interpreted them: ""Est-ce que nos deux jeunes gens ne font pas encore un peu trop rupin. . Je verrais de Marquis de St Papoul avec un visage plus maigre et plus allongé un peu donquichottesque."" He concludes with an apology for his demands: ""Hélas ! Je suis embêtant. Mais j'aime tellement vos compositions que je me permets d'y rêver comme si je les avais faites moi-même."" The illustrated edition would be published in 1954 by Flammarion marking the sole collaboration between the Académie Française member and the Montmartre painter. unknown

The earlier letter from 30 December 1901 contains New Year's wishes, news about Jules Verne's health, and an invitation to visit him and his wife Honorine in Amiens: "Nous te renvoyons nos vœux, pour cette nouvelle année 1902 dans laquelle je vais achever ma soixante-quatorzième ! Mes yeux sont toujours dans le même état et je ne me déciderai à subir l'opération que le jour où ce sera absolument nécessaire. Je sais que tous les enfants vont bien, et je te renouvelle ce que je te disais dans ma dernière lettre : si tu reviens dans le nord, tache de t'arrêter, soit pour quelques heures, ou bien quelques jours à Amiens, cela nous fera grand plaisir". - The second letter from August 1902 again concerns Jules Verne's eye cataract and his decision to delay surgery as long as possible: "Honorine et moi, nous t'envoyons nos meilleurs compléments, en te priant de les transmettre à ton fils ! Cependant, cette double bénédiction ne laisse pas d'être lourde, comme tu le dis. Mais il faut bien l'accepter. Honorine n'a pas trop à se plaindre de sa santé. Et toi ?... Pour moi, j'y vais mal. Je n'ai point encore été opéré de mon cataracte, et je me n'y déciderai que lorsqu'il ne sera plus possible de faire autrement. Tant que je pourrai lire et écrire, même difficilement, j'attendrai [...]". - The earlier letter without signature due to clipping. Well preserved.

Julien Gracq expresses his regret that his friend Ariel Denis was not selected despite his intervention by the Berlin Academy to teach: ""Je vous avais recommandé de mon mieux mais je doute que cela ait été en Allemagne d'une grande efficacité. Je sais d'ailleurs que comme vous le pressentiez les concurents étaient en nombre."" ""I recommended you as best I could but I doubt that was very effective in Germany. I know moreover that as you suspected there were many competitors."" To help his friend the author of Rivage des Syrtes suggested to publisher Seghers who wanted to publish a work about him in his famous ""Poètes d'aujourd'hui"" collection the name of Ariel Denis having had no news from the first biographer considered for this publication: ""Ils me demandent de leur suggérer un nom. J'ai indiqué celui de Lautrat. Et j'ai indiqué le vôtre ne sachant bien sûr aucunement si un travail de ce genre pourrait vous plaire. Il va de soi que si Seghers s'adressait à vous vous devez être absolument libre d'accepter ou de refuser."" ""They ask me to suggest a name. I indicated Lautrat's. And I indicated yours not knowing of course at all whether work of this kind might please you. It goes without saying that if Seghers approached you you must be absolutely free to accept or refuse."" III. 1829). - Der Brief v. 1. V. 1845 mit einer Empfehlung für Dr. Rautenberg, "einen wackeren jungen Freund und Landsmann". - Nach ärztlicher Praxis in Hamburg und während der napoleonischen Kriege auch im Felde, beschäftigte sich Julius mit der Humanisierung des Strafvollzugs. Studienreisen nach England und Nordamerika regten ihn zu Reformvorschlägen an, die große Aufmerksamkeit in der Öffentlichkeit fanden - so etwa trat er insbesondere für die Einführung der Einzelhaft ein. Seine Arbeiten waren grundlegend für die Reform des Gefängniswesens, die in der Mitte des 19. Jhdts. nicht nur in Preußen, sondern in ganz Europa einsetzte. - Rudolf Rt. von Vivenot gründete 1848 den "Konstitutionell-monarchistischen Verein"; als sich die angestrebte Gründung einer patriotischen Partei nicht verwirklichen ließ, zog er sich jedoch aus der aktiven Politik zurück. Seit 1868 Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina, wurde er 1872 Vorsitzender des Komitees zur Gründung des Sophienspitals in Wien; daneben war Vivenot Direktor des Unterstützungsvereins für Witwen und Waisen des medizinischen Doktor-Collegiums. - Das Albumblatt mit alten Montagespuren und unbedeutendem kl. Showing him in conversation with Hugh Burnett, the plinth of a bust showing behind him, at a tea-table. - The haunting phrase "Arcana Publicata Vilescunt", which may roughly be translated as "secret knowledge when published is made profane", is to be found on the title-page of the first edition of the "Chemical Wedding" of Christian Rosenkreutz (1616), an alchemical allegory by the early Rosicrucian and later Silesian father, Johann Valentin Andreae, and edited by the aptly-named Johann Friedrich Jung. The teasing inscription on this photograph refers to the fact that it was Hugh Burnett's programme, "Face to Face", that brought Jung into contact with a mass audience for the first time. One of the viewers of the programme, Wolfgang Foges, contacted Burnett's interviewer, John Freeman, and asked him to contact Jung to sound him out about the possibility of writing a book explaining his views for the intelligent general reader rather than the specialist. Freeman conducted two interviews to this end with Jung, but was met with a firm but polite refusal. Jung then had a dream in which he was speaking in a public forum to 'a multitude of people who were listening to him with wrapt attention and understanding what he said'. When asked by Foges if he would reconsider, Jung agreed, on the condition that it consisted not just of his own writings but included essays by his closest followers, and was to be edited by Freeman. The result, which was to appear after Jung's death, was "Man and His Symbols", 1964 (cf. Deirdre Bair, Jung: A Biography [2004], pp. 619-620).

4to and oblong 8vo. Altogether 21 pp. With 3 autograph envelopes. Includes two typed letters by Jung's assistant Aniela Jaffé, the draft for a letter from Leonore L. Fabisch, and a hectographed letter of recommendation by Jung (together 4 pp. 4to and oblong 8vo). Important, hitherto unpublished German correspondence with the graphologist and psychologist Leonore L. Fabisch, who briefly studied under Jung and had fled from Berlin to New York in the 1930s. Encompassing the years from 1940 to 1960, shortly before Jung's death, the letters cover a broad range of professional subjects and biographical events, giving evidence of a long but complicated friendship. Some of the early letters from the war and its immediate aftermath strike a melancholy tone, especially the second one, dated 2 April 1941, in which Jung complains that he seems unable to write anything meaningful and dreads answering the many letters he receives. He briefly refers to antisemitism, cautiously confirming Fabisch's suspicions that this might prove a hindrance to her establishing herself professionally in New York: "You are right, the Jew and antisemitism are a big problem. I suppose something of this sort must exist, it wouldn't be so otherwise". Jung goes on to condemn the entire world as "largely a rotten mess" ("grösstenteils eine Schweinerei") only barely good enough to survive, perpetually on the brink of "croaking on all its wickedness". All things considered, he writes, human existence is about "eating or being eaten", and those who have "a roof over their heads, enough to eat and a one or two decent acquaintances" have already reached a "so-called state of happiness" - anything beyond that is "a luxury and treacherous luck". Fabisch ought to be grateful every day for "not being in Germany or anywhere else in Europe any longer". The ambiguity of Jungs's short remark about antisemitism and its subtle relativization fit the pattern of his widely criticized statements during the rise of Nazism and his psychological characterizations of "Germans" and "Jews" from the late 1930s. While Jung has never been considered an antisemite, his remarks were often felt to be naive, and he later felt it necessary to apologize to several Jewish friends. - His bitter, insensitive letter to Fabisch may have contributed to the four-year hiatus in the correspondence to which Jung refers in a subsequent letter of 4 August 1945, stating that he has reduced his psychological practice to a minimum for the benefit of his scientific projects. Jung also announces the 1946 publication of "Psychology of the Transference" and hints at "Mysterium Coniuctionis", which would not appear until 1955. In both publications Jung tries to establish a connection between psychology and alchemy, a subject which recurs in a letter from 1 April 1955. While Jung shows more empathy with Fabisch's struggles as an immigrant in New York after the war, he paints a grim picture of postwar Europe: "I understand that you never feel quite at home in America, even though Europe has been turned into a hellscape thanks to the Germans' madness" (3 August 1946). In his view, Switzerland has been "miraculously spared" but has become a "cultural island" and a "small piece of old European culture", for "the situation is worse than after the Thirty Years' War". - Referring to his fragile health and old age on several occasions, Jung regrets that he does not have the energy to visit Fabisch in New York but hopes to welcome her in Europe. Fabisch's first visit to Switzerland after the war seems to have occurred in July or August 1949, with a second one in 1953. A potential third visit was overshadowed by the death of Jung's wife Emma in November 1955. - On 14 December 1955, Jung's assistant Aniela Jaffé thanks Fabisch in Jung's name for a letter of condolence, emphasizing that it was one of the few he had read personally. In early 1956 Jaffé confirms the possibility of a visit in June but writes that Jung now lives in semi-seclusion and cannot spare "as much time as you wish and possibly need". The enigmatic phrasing and Jung's avoidance of writing personally points to a complication in the relationship with Fabisch that a typed letter from 4 June 1954 had anticipated: "The difficulty that you experience in your relationship to me is illuminated by your dream. It speaks of an entitlement that is not in agreement with my reality. Even within the dream there is a remarkable disconnection to the external situation, as you lightheartedly indulge in sleep without the least consideration for me, your surroundings, or their situation. It would seem to me quite understandable that no relationship can be formed under these circumstances". Overall, the correspondence remains professional and friendly. In the same letter, Jung interprets the dream of one of Fabisch's patients: "I have never seen this symbolism before. It appears to imply that the sexual act is elevated from the sphere of mere drive, where it resides, to the psychological sphere". He also encourages Fabisch to publish her cases and thanks her on several occasions for books and birthday wishes she had sent him. When Jung and Fabisch discuss her plan to relocate Brazil, he seems on the verge of repeating his earlier insensitive remarks, noting that while from Zurich the move seems gigantic, Fabisch has, after all, "already uprooted herself once and may as well continue the routine", at the same time warning her that Brazil "lags far behind Chicago, on the very border of the jungle," and has "strange spirits in the atmosphere, but no spirit". He advises her to go to New England instead (5 December 1958). Two years later, in a letter from 4 August 1960, after Fabisch has in fact decided to move to Sao Paulo, he strikes a new tone: "After all, that place is also on earth and consists of human beings". In contrast to his letter written in 1941, Jung here appears once more capable of a cautiously positive assessment of humanity. - One of the manuscripts is a diagram of a tarot reading by Jung for Leonore L. Fabisch in black ink, pencil and red pencil, dated 11 August 1949. The second manuscript might be the attachment with transcriptions of an inscription sent with a letter from 1 April 1955, wherein Jung discusses an alchemical image. It comprises 7 lines with two Greek quotes referring to the gods Aion and Telesphorus and a German translation by Jung. The first quote is attributed to Heraclitus. - With two exceptions on stationery with printed address. Overall in very good condition with occasional creases and minor tears and a few deeper tears (24 April 1940, 19 April 1949) but no loss to text. - A letter from Fabisch to Jung, dated 28 October 1940, is held at the archive of the ETH Zurich (Hs 1056:8868).
