Folio. 4 ¾ pp. on 8 ff. In red ink. Article in French entitled "Le 7 Novembre est bien la fête des Sans-Dieu" ("November 7 is effectively the Feast of the Godless") for the atheist magazine "La Lutte antireligieuse et sociale", organ of Proletarian Free Thought (better known as "Organisation des travailleurs sans dieu"). Louis Aragon spent a year in Moscow from early 1932 after breaking with the Surrealist movement, particularly André Breton. During this time he witnessed the enormous parade on Red Square for Revolution Day on October 15. In the article Aragon describes the event with a focus on anti-religious messages, contrasting the "byzantine" Saint Basil's Cathedral with modern architecture, engineering, and technological progress such as the planned Moscow Canal, achieved by communism. The military parade was followed by a parade of workers with their tools, products and anti-religious posters, for "this crowd has no God anymore, this immense crowd has no God anymore". And yet there are new idols, standing out against the old ones: "What an extraordinary figure made above this crowd, where you find the best shock workers of socialist construction, the best pioneers from the kolkhozes and sovkhozes, the baroque cathedral, like a phantom of the past!" In closing, Aragon enthusiastically describes the accompanying air show, likening the aircrafts to symbols of socialist progress, in comparison with the symbols of tsarism and orthodoxy: "And in passing with their straight wings they seem to deride the contorted golden eagles of the Tsars, the crosses with two crossbeams of the old church, where today only the voices of Marx and Lenin are heard, of the old church that is chained to the triumphal chariot of the Proletariat". - Louis Aragon was loyal to Moscow and Stalinism well into the 1960s, even defending the Moscow Trials in articles. When the scope of Stalinist terror was finally revealed, he distanced himself from Soviet communism and condemned its past and continuing crimes. - Several minor tears, somewhat dusty and smudged. 12mo. ½ p. In French. Thanking the poet Léon-Paul Fargue for defending Aragon and his friends "against people who are a bit too quick with their tongues and quills". Aragon wrote this charming note with the heading "as soon as possible" after learning of Fargue's "courageous" act from the librarian Adrienne Monnier. With ironic hyperbole, Aragon apologizes for finding "neither clever phrases nor commonplaces", explaining that Fargue's attitude touches him so deeply that he is "reduced to" silence. The note in full: "Je ne veux pas, Monsieur, m'en remettre au hazard d'un rencontre pour vous remercier. Je viens d'apprendre de Mademoiselle Monnier de quelle façon courageuse vous nous avez défendus mes amis et moi contre des gens un peu trop prompts de la langue et de la plume. Excusez-moi de ne trouver pour vous en exprimer [!] ma gratitude ni pharses habiles ni lieux communs. Votre attitude me touche mieux et ne me laisse qu'à me taire". - Louis Aragon and Léon-Paul Fargue were among the numerous important customers and friends of the legendary book dealer Adrienne Monnier. The dispute alluded to in the note might well be the famous rupture between the Dadaists with their leader Tristan Tzara and the new Surrealist group centering on André Breton and Louis Aragon. - Two minor stains. [...] Everything military is suspect, the pseudo-peaceful language which here is used against the army of peace, against the army of workers and peasants, and which he unreservedly assimilates to the army of war to that of capital, it is in fact the very language of the 'comrade anarchist, traitor to the proletariat'" (transl.).

To the author of an unidentified treatise on military education entitled "Trésor fécond de principes, de vues, de sentimens incontestables", praising it in the highest terms and commenting on the text: "Je Vous restitue Monsieur, avec regrét, n'ayant put m'en pouvoir ici, et reconnaissance Votre incomparable Ouvrage [...], ou tout ce qui était à dire est exposé avec une sagacité, une propriété de termes, une facilité qui le met à la portée d'un chacun et électrise en même tems la raison et le cœur de quiconque le lit [...]". - Luigi Giuseppe Arbario di Gattinara originally envisaged an army career, having reached the rank of a captain of the infantry when he was convinced by the Sardinian minister of external affairs to accept a diplomatic mission to Naples in 1782. In 1786 he was named ambassador to the Imperial court in Vienna, where he served until 1794. After his return to Turin, the Marquess served as councillor to the Sardinian King and took public office in the Napoleonic Italian Republic in 1802. He assisted in the coronation of Napoleon as King of Italy in 1805, whose state council he joined. In 1809 Napoleon named Arbario di Gattinara senator of the Kingdom of Italy. During the restoration, the Marquess withdrew to private life, dedicating his time to political and economical studies. - On stationery with engraved letterhead "Le Senteur Comte de Breme, Grand Dignitaire de l'Ordre de la Couronne de Fer". With recipient's or collector's note in ink. Well preserved.

Vertrauliche Briefe an einen namentlich nicht genannten Freund und Gönner über literarische, finanzielle und soziale Belange: "Hr. [Moritz] Saphir hat mein gutes schwunghaftes Gedicht nicht abgedruckt" (undat. Brief). - "Mit banger Seele wende ich mich bittend an Ihre Güte und Fürsprache, als an ein Wesen, dem ich alles Gute, Edle und Menschliche zumuthe. Mein Ludwig ist in einer höchst drückenden Lage. Er soll ausziehen, ohne die Miethe und Alles was daran hängt bezahlen zu können. Er mußte sich, da man ihm eine Hauptmanns Charge gab, equirieren, es beträgt 80 f CM. und er hat die Mittel nicht, da ihm an der Gage so viel abgezogen wird. Mein Herz blutet wahrlich, daß ich seine Bedrängnisse sehen muß, ohne ihm helfen zu können. IV. 1848, hierzu auch das Antwortschreiben). - Schon in jungen Jahren literarisch tätig geworden, wurde 1834 in Lemberg das von der Fünfzehnjährigen zu Ehren des Geburtstags von Kaiser Franz I. gedichtete Lustspiel "Östreichs Doppeladler" aufgeführt, im Jahr darauf erschienen die "Lenzblüthen", eine König Ludwig I. von Bayern gewidmete Gedichtsammlung. Nach dem Tod ihres Vaters nach Wien gezogen, schrieb Emma von Arbter mehrere Novellen und Erzählungen, die im Wiener Journal "Humorist" veröffentlicht wurden.

Queen Anne's physician in ordinary 1705-14 is better known as a close friend of Swift Gay and Pope with whom he founded the Scriblerus Club; among his many political pamphlets was "The History of John Bull" 1727 which created the stereotype of John Bull the typical Englishman. Signature and salutation clipped from an ALS 1p 4½" X 2¼" n.p. n.y. Near fine. Typical light brown ink. Reads in full: "and I remain / My Dear Sir / Your very trusty / Arbuthnot" on the recto while the verso bears about 19 words in his hand -- obviously an excerpt from a letter. A most attractive example and rather uncommon. unknown

"Nicht durch Phrasen, nicht durch Trauer über die Vergangenheit werden wir - Deutschen - uns eine bessere Zukunft im Kreise der Volker sichern, sondern dadurch, daß wir der modernen Technik, dem Techniker die Wertschätzung zukommen lassen, welche beide heute im wirschaftlichen, staatlichem Leben verdienen [...]". Geschrieben als Beitrag für die von Friedrich Koslowsky im Berliner Eigenbrödler-Verlag herausgegebene Faksimile-Anthologie "Deutschlands Köpfe der Gegenwart über Deutschlands Zukunft" (1928). - Georg von Arco, Geschäftsführer von Telefunken, wirkte federführend an der Entwicklung leistungsstarker Sendeanlagen mit und war maßgeblich an Entwicklung der Hochfrequenztechnik in Deutschland beteiligt. 1897 errichtete er auf dem Glockenturm der Sacrower Heilandskirche die erste deutsche Antennenanlage für drahtlose Telegraphie. - Mit kleinem Eckausriss. Attractive vintage half-length portrait of Arden taken for the 1959 film "Anatomy of a Murder" showing her in dress and white gloves holding a dog on her lap.
