The son of Declaration of Independence signer Lewis Morris 1726-98 and nephew of statesman Gouverneur Morris 1752-1816 was himself a soldier in the Revolutionary war -- aide-de-camp to General Charles Lee later on the staff of General Nathanael Greene and himself raised to the rank of general; postwar he helped found the village of Butternuts Otsego County in 1787 and served in the New York legislature; Morris New York is named in his honor. ANS 3rd person 7 3/4" X 6¼" n.p. 1802 March 5. Addressed to a W. Webster. Very good. Lightly and pleasantly age toned. "Genl. Morris compts to Mr Webster sends a letter to Captn Duncan open for his perusal If Mr W. has recd. the celebrated speech of Mr Bayard n the House of Rept.ves against the repeal of the Indecency law he will be much obliged by the perusal of it together with any other southern papers that may have come to hand since those he was obliged with the examination of a day or two ago." 8vo. 1 p. on bifolium. With original portrait photograph (107 x 157 mm). To his private secretary Sydney Cockerell (1867-1962), concerning photographs and a visit to the Merton Abbey Mills: "Thank you very much. When am I to have the photos? I may as well have the duplicates as they cost so little. By all means come to Merton: meantime I shall be at home Sunday afternoon if you can come in [...]". - Sydney Cockerell, who would later go on to serve as the director of the Fitzwilliam Museum (1908-37), worked for Morris from 1891 or 1892 onwards. Morris's sojourn at Tunbridge Wells is probably in connection with his deteriorating health. - Some foxing. Traces of former mounting.

Inscribed by Morrow to Mr. and Mrs. Reeve Schley: "For Mr. and Mrs. Reeve Schley who knew Casa Manana. with a Merry Christmas from Elizabeth Morrow. December 1932." A rare work and important resource on Mexican architecture and pottery by Elizabeth Cutter Morrow on Cuernavaca Mexico where she and her husband U.S. Senator Dwight Morrow who was Ambassador to Mexico from 1927 to 1930 bought adjoining plots to build a house inspired by the local historic architecture. The book is divided into three sections. Section one describes the town of Cuernavaca. Section two contains architectural plans and details for the home and gardens. Section three contains photo reproductions of the Mexican furnishings in the house including water jars jewelry boxes and woven garments. American-born expatriate artist and designer William Spratling created drawings for the new house and illustrated the text. Elizabeth Morrow was an American poet in the early 20th century who became the first female head of Smith College. Morse, responding to a query about a man who may have been a former employee, and requesting more information: "[...] By having answers to these questions, I might be able to find his friends, and the relief he requires [...]". - With a printed order of service for his memorial service on 16th April 1872 (8vo, 1 p.). - After having established his reputation as a portrait painter, in his middle age Morse contributed to the invention of a single-wire telegraph system. He was a co-developer of Morse code and helped to develop the commercial use of telegraphy.

Morgen oder Uebermorgen werden Sie wahrscheinlich einen Besuch der Durchlauchten haben, und ich bitte Sie (unter uns!): Falls sie nach Liedern von mir fragen, ihnen, wie Sie auch welche vorräthig hätten, keine zu geben, auch keine zu verschicken [...]". - Der polnische Klaviervirtuose Mortier de Fontaine war nach beruflichem Wirken in St. Petersburg 1860 nach Westeuropa zurückgekehrt, wo er sich in München, Paris und später in London niederließ.

An den Mathematiker und Physiker Karl Friedrich Hindenburg in Leipzig: "Vor einiger Zeit nahm ich mir die Freiheit, an Sie zu schreiben, wegen einer Algebraischen Angelegenheit, in welcher H. Prof. Klügel Sie zum Schiedsrichter zwischen ihm u. mir erbeten hatte. Ich gab Ihnen zugleich Nachricht von meinem lezten [sic] an ihn gerichteten Aufsatz, u. vermuthete, daß er Ihnen denselben zuschicken würde [...] Ich habe nun die Umarbeitung meiner Abhandlung über den Fermatischen Satz meist vollendet, u. da ich vermuthen muß, daß mein lezter [sic] Aufsatz, den Sie jetzt in Händen haben, wegen seiner fragmentarischen Beschaffenheit, nicht deutlich genug seyn wird, so nehme ich mir die Freiheit, [...] die 3 ersten Bogen, die den schwierigen Satz betreffen, zu übersenden [...]". - Der in Puttingham in England geborene brüderische Musikwissenschaftler Peter Mortimer war Verfasser eines vielbeachteten Werks über den Choral-Gesang der Reformation. - Etwas angestaubt, fleckig und knittrig. Mit kleinen Randläsuren, Siegelresten und Einriss durch Siegelöffnung.
