Fiorello La Guardia beat this mayoral candidate in 1941 but after a stint in the U.S. Army in which he rose to the rank of brigadier general he was elected New York City's one hundredth mayor in 1946 resigning in 1950 in the face of a police corruption scandal; from 1950 to 1952 he served as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico. This Canadian-American composer songwriter pianist singer and music educator was a popular vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley figure; Caruso put him "on the map" in 1913 when he recorded O'Hara's song "Your Eyes Have Told Me What I Did Now Know" and in 1914 he enjoyed his biggest hit "Tennessee I Hear You Calling Me"; during World War One his hit "K-K-K-Katy" sold more than one million sheet music copies; he was also an early ethnomusicologist recording and collecting Native American music on wax cylinders -- some of which he later sang himself in early Victor and Edison recordings; in 1945 he was elected president of the Composers-Authors Guild; all told he composed more than 500 popular and patriotic songs. Printed DS 9" X 12" 6pp n.p. 1943 January 25. Very good. Mildest bit of age toning. Sheet music for "I Was the Tree: Sacred Song" with music by O'Hara and lyrics by Daniel S. Twohig published by R.L. Huntinger New York NY in 1937. Across the top of the front cover he inscribes and signs it large and bold in blue fountain pen: "For a great basso William Wahlert / Compliments & best wishes / of the composer. / Geoffrey O'Hare / Jany 25: / 1943." The 6th and last leaf consists of O'Hara and Twohig's song "Soft Were Your Hands Dear Jesus." Interesting unusual piece. unknown

This Irish soldier of fortune fought under General Gomez in Cuba in 1897 in the Spanish-American War as one of Roosevelt's "Rough Riders" in a Canadian cavalry regiment in the South African War in the Balkans in 1903 with the Princess Pat regiment in 1914 with the United States Army in 1917 and elsewhere; he called himself an "apostle of discontent" complaining it was hard to feed himself between wars; he tried his hand at acting in later years and even became a race horse trainer; at his death he owned a filling station in Taos New Mexico. Boldly pencilled "Yours for 'peace' / Patrick Irving O'Hay / Capt Inf. U.S.A ret" heavy stock 5" X 3" card n.p. n.y. Very good. Inspired by Wilhelm Busch, Oberländer is best known for his popular satirical depictions of human behaviour through anthropomorphic animal motifs which he created for the humoristic magazine "Fliegende Blätter" as well as the 1877 "Lustige Naturgeschichte oder Zoologica comica". - Traces of an angular fold near right margin; a few small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

Wer sie nicht überall aus dem unendlich reichen Formenschatz der Schöpfung herausfinden kann, dem ist nicht zu helfen! [...]" - Adolf Oberländer studierte an der Münchner Kunstakademie, war seit 1863 ständiger Mitarbeiter, bald auch populärster Zeichner der "Fliegenden Blätter" und arbeitete seit 1869 auch für die "Münchner Bilderbogen". Oberländer "schuf satirisch-humoristische Darstellungen menschlicher Verhaltensweisen und wurde vor allem durch seine anthropomorphisierenden Tierzeichnungen bekannt" (DBE). - Die Adreßseite mit kleinen Montagespuren, umseitig kleine Abklatschspuren des Poststempels.

Tirol zu machen [...]". - Helene Oberländer war von 1905-1911 Ensemblemitglied der Wiener Volksoper.

An die Redaktion der Leipziger Zeitung mit Bitte um Veröffentlichung der beiliegenden Absage, ein etwaiges zukünftiges Mandat im Landtag anzutreten: "Der Unterzeichnete bittet ergebenst, die beiliegende Erklärung im nächsten Blatte der Leipziger Zeitung abdrucken zu laßen, und den Betrag dafür durch Postvorschuß zu erheben [...]". - "Erklärung. / Nachdem mir in der neuern Zeit wieder aus verschiedenen Bezirken des Landes von verschiedenen Seiten her Anträge zu einer Wahl für den bevorstehenden Landtag gemacht worden sind, ich aber fortwährend von dem Wunsche beseelt bin, dem öffentlichen politischen Leben fern stehen zu können, so erkläre ich nunmehr hiermit auch öffentlich, daß ich eine etwa auf mich fallende Wahl [...] nicht annehmen würde [...]". - Martin Oberländer war Abgeordneter im Sächsischen Landtag und 1848/49 sächsischer Innenminister. - Etwas wasser-, finger- und braunfleckig. Mit Sammlervermerk in Bleistift.

Oblong 8vo (postcard). 1 page. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Freundl. Gruß von [...]". - Studying in Munich and Paris, Obermayer specialized in architectural engraving and created illustrations for historical works including "Die königliche Residenz in München" (1880), "Wiener Neubauten" (1876-1880), and "Der K. K. Justiz-Palast in Wien" (1885). - Traces of a postmark; a few small creases. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
