An den Mediziner Rudolf Rt. von Vivenot (1807-1884). - Parola war seit 1838 als Arzt am Zivilhospital in Cuneo tätig, im Jahr darauf wurde er Direktor des neu errichteten Hospitals für chronische Krankheiten. - Rudolf Rt. von Vivenot gründete 1848 den "Konstitutionell-monarchistischen Verein"; als sich die angestrebte Gründung einer patriotischen Partei nicht verwirklichen ließ, zog er sich jedoch aus der aktiven Politik zurück. Seit 1868 Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina, wurde er 1872 Vorsitzender des Komitees zur Gründung des Sophienspitals in Wien; daneben war Vivenot Direktor des Unterstützungsvereins für Witwen und Waisen des medizinischen Doktor-Collegiums. - In altem Sammlungsumschlag.

This American novelist and popular historian is best remembered for "Country Lawyer" 1939 a memoir of his attorney father's practice in rural New York and its sequel "The Big Family" 1941. Two Typed Letters Signed 7�" X 10�" and 8�" X 11" Bridgeport CT 1948 January 30 and 1948 March 24. Addressed to Mrs. Madlener -- Elaine Madlener noted Chicago collector and office of The Manuscript Society. First letter is very good with mild age toning and small paper clip impression; second letter is slightly less with minor wrinkles and paper clip stain. Good content to this admirer who wanted some books signed. "I always feel highly complimented when readers want their books autographed" he remarks in the first letter "especially if the request comes after reading." Nice discussion of his current project: "I am in the throes of finishing a novel of old New York. It is the story of the Fabulous Forties when the Croton Aqueduct was being built. I have been reading the newspapers of the day through the microfilm until my eyes are quite ready for a vacation. Papers of that particular period were printed on stock which has become so brittle that they break all to pieces when handled and the microfilm has really saved them from extinction. The Aqueduct was under construction for ten years and I have been fortunate enough to get hold of diaries kept by an old fellow who was curator of a museum there during the time and who was also an enthusiastic member of the Aqueduct family -- which was fought tooth and nail by the well water enthusiasts." In the second letter he editorializes about. well editors: ".I had my editor here and we were polishing off the new copy. My work is pretty messy when it is first finished and it is full of erasures and interlineations. If the editor wants any changes and there was never an editor who didn't want some little change made I like to have it done before the final copy is typed. The printers are very bossy nowadays and they demand the most perfect copy. Then if there is to be serial consideration there has to be a copy for the magazines and another for the moving pictures." 8vo and 12mo. Altogether 5 pp. on 12 ff. Charming letters by a pioneer of Science Fiction, concerning his work as a science journalist. In the only dated letter from 22 August 1868, Parville requests the recipient to forward the letter to the journalist Adrien Marx (1837-1906), thanking him facetiously for a "malicious article" in Le Figaro: "Je ne sais pas où est le Palais de Marx. Aiez donc la complaisance de le remercier en lui remettant ces quelques lignes. J'irai au Figaro au premier jour lui serrer la main. Je garde son article malicieux pour le jour où je me presenterai à la Académie. Si je n'entre pas, ma foi, ce ne sera pas de sa faute. Je lui en suis très reconnaissant [...]". - In what is possibly the most interesting letter of the collection, Parville asks the recipient to use his influence in order to help publish a short article concerning an invention that was disputed between Germany and France: "Je n'ai guères profité de vos anciennes et bonnes relations pour me faire de la reclame, hein? Et cependant aujourd'hui je cède à la tentation. Il s'agit d'une invention dont les Allemands veulent nous enlever l'honneur. Et je désirerais prendre date. Ci joint un entrefilet qui modifié selon les nécéssités du journal peuvent prendre place soit aux Echos, soit aux Nouvelles. De par ta toute puissance, je serais heureux de pouvoir le lire demain [...]" (Auteuil, Friday). - A very personal letter dated 26 April was written to thank the recipient for publishing a short text in "Le Figaro" that was very important to Parville: "Mon Cher Ami quel effet! Bonté divine, ce Figaro est inouï - Ces 10 lignes m'ont fait plus de bien que 20 de mes feuilletons. Je ne veux pas laisser passer la journée sans t'exprimer toute ma gratitude et tous mes remerciements [...]". - Two letters on stationery with embossed monogram. Minimal browning and one letter with several pin holes. All letters with traces of former mounting.

1 S. auf Doppelblatt. 4to. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief). An Papst Innozenz XI. (1676-89) gerichtetes Schreiben des Gerichtsvollziehers Domenico Pasca aus der Provinz Viterbo mit der Bitte um neue Befehle hinsichtlich der Exekution einer Strafe infolge der Enthaftung eines Schuldners. Pasca bittet sein Ansuchen an den zuständigen Kardinal Urbano Sacchetti (1640-1705), Commissario delle Armi, weiterzuleiten. Eine entsprechende Neuadressierung in anderer Hand findet sich unter der Originaladresse. Der Schuldner diente als Türmer des unter Papst Pius V. (1566-72) zum Küstenschutz errichteten Torre di Montalto. Als Angehöriger der päpstlichen Miliz genoss er besonderen Schutz, weshalb sich Pasca an den Papst wendet: "Domenico Pasca prostrato alli [!] piedi di V. Beat.me humil.te le expone come essendo stato carcerato Michel Ange.o Latami[?] da Farnese per un debbito litiggioso che haveva con Franc.co Masselloni da Mont'Alto. L'Or[din]e p[er] liberarlo dalle carceri et acciò havevo [?] campo di difendersi li fece severtà di stare à raggione e così fu libberato. Dopoi havendo il med.o havuto il torto p[er] le tre conformi. Et essendo dal d[it]o Creditore stato esecutato. L'Or[din]e p[er] evitare maggiori spese li convenne del proprio pagare Sc[udi] 245 m[ul]ta, a ne ripostè con d[ett]o Latami cessione di raggioni et [...] m[ul]ti [!], quale non più curandosi dell indennità dell'Or[din]e, che ha patiti questi pregiuditii [!] per liberarlo delle carceri, benche possa [?] non vol concorrere alla giusta sodisfatione. Et non havendo l'Or[din]e dove fare esecutione [!] reale, e non potendo eseguire il m[ul]to [!] nella sua persona, p[er] che ritrovandosi presentemente Torrieri della Torre di Mont'Alto pretende p[er] l'actual servitio che egli presta alla Militia che non si possa fare esecutione personale contro di lui. An einen namentlich nicht genannten Empfänger [wohl den Redakteur einer Zeitschift]: "Indem ich Sie hochgeehrter Herr nochmals um Entschuldigung bitte, bitte ich auch um Ihr gütiges Entgegenkommen betreffs Aufnahme der Notiz welche mir als Künstler sehr nützlich ist [...]". - Der in Wien geborene Sohn eines Kaufmanns erhielt seinen ersten Unterricht durch den Landschaftsmaler Wilhelm Lehner, später war "der bedeutende[...] Zeichner und Porträtmaler Professor Joseph Ed. [wohl Eugen] Hörwarter" sein Lehrer (Das geistige Dtld. am Ende des 19. Jhdts., Bd. 1, 1898; zit. n. DBA I 933, 53). Seit 1885 besuchte er die Wiener Akademie, "wandte sich der Landschaftsmalerei zu und und vervollkommnete sein Können durch zahlreiche Reisen in den österreichischen Kronländern, Ungarn und Bayern. Er werde sich nicht um die Organisation des Musikfestes kümmern und seine Karte an Colonne übergeben, der sicherlich von dem Angebot des Dirktors des Gaulois profitieren werde: „Veuillez remercier pour moi Monsieur Arthur Meyer […] je n’aurais pas à m’occuper de l’organisation de cette fête musicale[.] je transmets votre carte a [!] Colonne qui certainement profitera de la bonne offre du directeur du Gaulois [...]“. – Jules Pasdeloup „war der volkstümlichste Dirigent, den Frankreich je erlebte. Seine Tätigkeit war für das französische Musikleben von nachhaltiger Bedeutung. Nach dem Vorbilde seiner Concerts populaires wurden in der Provinz [...] ähnliche Konzerte veranstaltet. Pasdeloup führte besonders die Klassiker auf, doch setzte er sich auch für Werke von Mendelssohn, Schumann, Gade, Brahms, Glinka, Tschaikowsky, Berlioz und vor allem Wagner ein. Schließlich erwies er der jungen französischen Komponistenschule unermeßliche Dienste, indem er Gounod, Saint-Saëns, Th. Gouvy, Massenet, Bizet, Lalo, E. Von den angebotenen 600 Francs könne er kaum sein Orchester bezahlen, das schließlich nicht umsonst spiele: „Vous me proposez dans votre lettre 600 f pour le concert 750 francs[.] je ne pourrai a [!] peine rétribuer mon orchestre qui ne jouera pas pour rien [...]“. – Jules Pasdeloup war der volkstümlichste Dirigent, den Frankreich je erlebte.
