To a journalist pointing out a mistake in an article about his work, wherein it was claimed that the music teacher, pianist and composer Félix Le Couppey (1811-87) had participated in its creation: "Malheureusement il s'est glissé une erreur de fait dans votre article si bienveillant d'ailleurs. Mr. Le Couppey n'a, en aucune façon, mis la main à mon ouvrage. Je ne le lui ai lu que lorsqu'il a été terminé et c'est à dessein que dans ma dédicace je demande à mon maitre d'accorder son approbation à ce travail tout personnel [...] J'ai beaucoup regretté cette insinuation inexacte qui pouvait donner lieu à des interprétations complètement fausses [...]". Bousquet, disciple de Vilfredo Pareto Grand admirateur de son Talent, Varsovie le 5 septembre 1923". Au-dessus on peut lire l'ex-libris manuscrit : "M. Kolabinskiej Lausanne 6 czerwiec 1911". Elève de Pareto, Marie Kolabinska soutient sa thèse en 1912 sur "La circulation des élites en France". Vilfredo l'évoque dans sa correspondance avec Pantaleoni, et dans son Traité de Sociologie. Le dédicataire est le professeur Georges-Henri Bousquet (1900-1978), qui publiera la seconde édition des "Systèmes socialistes" de Pareto en 1926, manifestement sur la base du présent exemplaire. Le professeur Bousquet, docteur en droit en 1923 avec une thèse sur "L'évolution sociale en Hollande 1914-1922", devint un spécialiste de questions économiques, proche de Pareto et Schumpeter, ainsi qu'un islamisant de l'école de Goldziher et Snouck-Hugronje, professeur aux facultés d'Alger puis de Bordeaux. Proche de son maître en sociologie Vilfredo Pareto, il en servit fortement la pensée, en l'éditant et en le vulgarisant. G.-H. Bousquet entretint une correspondance avec Pareto et le visita notamment une huitaine de jours dans sa villa de Céligny (Suisse), vers Pâques 1923. Outre Pareto, G.-.H. Bousquet connut personnellement d'aussi grands noms de la pensée économique que Joseph Schumpeter (rencontré dès 1923 à Vienne puis fréquenté pendant plusieurs mois à Harvard, lors d'un séjour financé par la fondation Rockfeller en 1933-1934), Irving Fisher ou Albert Aupetit, le disciple de Léon Walras. Bousquet Témoignage d'amitié et de haute considération". Il s'agit de l'édition originale de la traduction française du Traité, publié en italien en 1916. Successeur de Léon Walras dans la chaire de Lausanne, le sociologue et économiste Vilfredo Pareto (1848-1923) reste l'un des plus fameux intellectuels de son temps. Son traité de sociologie marque une date dans la discipline, notamment dans l'étude des actions non-logiques et dans l'appréciations de ce qu'il dénomme les "résidus" : "les résidus sont des manifestations de sentiments. Les dérivations comprennent des raisonnements logiques, des sophismes, des manifestations de sentiments employées pour dériver; elles sont une manifestation du besoin de raisonner qu’éprouve l’homme. Si ce besoin n’était satisfait que par les raisonnements logico-expérimentaux, il n’y aurait pas de dérivations et à leur place, on aurait des théories logico-expérimentales. Mais le besoin de raisonnement de l’homme trouve à se satisfaire de beaucoup d’autres manières : par des raisonnements pseudo-expérimentaux par des paroles qui excitent les sentiments, par des discours vains et inconsistants; ainsi naissent les dérivations. Elles font défaut aux deux extrêmes : d’une part pour les actions instinctives, d’autre part, pour les sciences rigoureusement logico-expérimentales. On les rencontre dans les cas intermédiaires" (Traité, paragraphe 1401). L'ouvrage, en état très satisfaisant (très manipulé par G.-H. Bousquet mais bien solide, avec une fente partielle à un mors en tête et frott. en coiffe sup.) est enrichi des très nombreuses annotations du dédicataire, G.-H. Bousquet. 12mo and 8vo. 3 pp. on 4 ff. Both letters written to thank an unidentified friend for favourable reviews. In the letter from 13 April 1898, the work to which Paris refers is not clearly identifiable. As he goes on to decry the moral bankruptcy of France, Paris refers to the ongoing Dreyfus affair. The politically motivated persecution and condemnation of Dreyfus clashed with Paris's scientific standards and his passion for truth, especially as several philologists became indirectly involved in the case. In February 1898 in the defamation trial against Émile Zola, the defence brought forward five experts from the École Nationale des Chartes, the school for archivist-paleographs where Gaston Paris had been educated and of whose council he was a member. They testified that the only evidence against Dreyfus was in fact not written by him but by another officer. While accurate, their opinion was withheld from the public, and Zola was convicted. This further injustice probably led to Gaston Paris's bitter remarks in the letter: "Your note gave me great pleasure and afforded me a moment of distraction from the painful thoughts that never stop haunting me in light of the sad moral condition of our country and the deep plunge that seems to accelerate with every day. Will this terrible nightmare ever be lifted from our breast? In the meantime, it oppresses us so severely that at times we find it difficul to breathe [...]". - In his letter from 14 April 1901, Paris thanks the recipient for a very favourable review of his 1901 book "François Villon", a biography of the best-known French poet of the Late Middle Ages. Despite the review, Paris is highly critical of his own work: "Je viens de lire votre article sur mon Villon, et je vous en remercie vivement en même temps que je vous en félicite. Vous avez esquissé en quelques traits frais et justes la physionomie du poète escolier et fait plus d'un remarque pénétrant dans sa rapidité. Ce que vous dites de mon travail, - dont je ne suis pas, pour ma part, bien satisfait, - prouve votre amitié pour moi, dont je n'ai jamais douté et qui m'est très précieuse [...]". - Both letters with traces of former mounting. Elle en a ordonné le dépôt dans la Bibliothèque, et m’a chargé de vous transmettre des remerciemens. "Yes I know exactly what you mean about taking orders from everyone. We all have to learn to swing with the punches and when we fail to do so seems to be when we get into deep water. I must confess we all misstep once in awhile though and we should try to understand those who get crossed up in our presence."
