(1852–1929) Il fut l’une des figures majeures de la peinture naturaliste française. Élève de Gérôme et sociétaire du Salon, il reçut les plus hautes distinctions de son temps, dont la médaille d'honneur du Salon en 1885. Son œuvre, qui combine un souci du détail réaliste et une sensibilité spirituelle, a été saluée aussi bien par les critiques que par les institutions. Il est aujourd’hui représenté dans les principales collections publiques françaises, dont le musée d’Orsay.

1 S. auf Doppelblatt. 4to. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief). An Papst Innozenz XI. (1676-89) gerichtetes Schreiben des Gerichtsvollziehers Domenico Pasca aus der Provinz Viterbo mit der Bitte um neue Befehle hinsichtlich der Exekution einer Strafe infolge der Enthaftung eines Schuldners. Pasca bittet sein Ansuchen an den zuständigen Kardinal Urbano Sacchetti (1640-1705), Commissario delle Armi, weiterzuleiten. Eine entsprechende Neuadressierung in anderer Hand findet sich unter der Originaladresse. Der Schuldner diente als Türmer des unter Papst Pius V. (1566-72) zum Küstenschutz errichteten Torre di Montalto. Als Angehöriger der päpstlichen Miliz genoss er besonderen Schutz, weshalb sich Pasca an den Papst wendet: "Domenico Pasca prostrato alli [!] piedi di V. Beat.me humil.te le expone come essendo stato carcerato Michel Ange.o Latami[?] da Farnese per un debbito litiggioso che haveva con Franc.co Masselloni da Mont'Alto. L'Or[din]e p[er] liberarlo dalle carceri et acciò havevo [?] campo di difendersi li fece severtà di stare à raggione e così fu libberato. Dopoi havendo il med.o havuto il torto p[er] le tre conformi. Et essendo dal d[it]o Creditore stato esecutato. L'Or[din]e p[er] evitare maggiori spese li convenne del proprio pagare Sc[udi] 245 m[ul]ta, a ne ripostè con d[ett]o Latami cessione di raggioni et [...] m[ul]ti [!], quale non più curandosi dell indennità dell'Or[din]e, che ha patiti questi pregiuditii [!] per liberarlo delle carceri, benche possa [?] non vol concorrere alla giusta sodisfatione. Et non havendo l'Or[din]e dove fare esecutione [!] reale, e non potendo eseguire il m[ul]to [!] nella sua persona, p[er] che ritrovandosi presentemente Torrieri della Torre di Mont'Alto pretende p[er] l'actual servitio che egli presta alla Militia che non si possa fare esecutione personale contro di lui. An einen namentlich nicht genannten Empfänger [wohl den Redakteur einer Zeitschift]: "Indem ich Sie hochgeehrter Herr nochmals um Entschuldigung bitte, bitte ich auch um Ihr gütiges Entgegenkommen betreffs Aufnahme der Notiz welche mir als Künstler sehr nützlich ist [...]". - Der in Wien geborene Sohn eines Kaufmanns erhielt seinen ersten Unterricht durch den Landschaftsmaler Wilhelm Lehner, später war "der bedeutende[...] Zeichner und Porträtmaler Professor Joseph Ed. [wohl Eugen] Hörwarter" sein Lehrer (Das geistige Dtld. am Ende des 19. Jhdts., Bd. 1, 1898; zit. n. DBA I 933, 53). Seit 1885 besuchte er die Wiener Akademie, "wandte sich der Landschaftsmalerei zu und und vervollkommnete sein Können durch zahlreiche Reisen in den österreichischen Kronländern, Ungarn und Bayern. Er werde sich nicht um die Organisation des Musikfestes kümmern und seine Karte an Colonne übergeben, der sicherlich von dem Angebot des Dirktors des Gaulois profitieren werde: „Veuillez remercier pour moi Monsieur Arthur Meyer […] je n’aurais pas à m’occuper de l’organisation de cette fête musicale[.] je transmets votre carte a [!] Colonne qui certainement profitera de la bonne offre du directeur du Gaulois [...]“. – Jules Pasdeloup „war der volkstümlichste Dirigent, den Frankreich je erlebte. Large 8vo. 2 pp. on bifolium. With autograph address and seal. Highly interesting letter to the famous Italian physician and naturalist Antonio Vallisneri (1661-1730) in Padua, describing the illness of a princess as an inexplicable series of medical crises and seeming recoveries that almost leave Parenti at a loss for words: "Non so più che scrivere a V.S. Ill.ma della maladia della Signora Principessa: ella è sì varia, sì incostante, sì indiavolata che i medici non la sanno intendere. Dopo la mia ultima [visita] la Signora Principessa ha avuto un attacco improvviso violentissimo che si stimava già spedita all'altro mondo. Si è di poi risvegliata ed a tal segno rimessa, che quasi quasi si diceva fuori di pericolo; quando martedì della presente settimana le sorprese un'ardentissima febbre [...]". - In the second part of the letter, Parenti mentions that Vallisnieri had praised an edition of Pliny by an unidentified Count. Despite the glory that this judgment provided him with, the Count was suspicious of the general praise, thus asking Vallisneri through Parenti about his "true feelings" concerning his work: "V.S. Ill.ma ha scritto elogi del Plinio del Signor Conte di [Callo] a tal segno che questo onestissimo uomo ne va glorioso per tutta la città, ma non è contento di cotesta sua lode in generale; desidererebbe qualche cosa di particolare e perciò per mezzo mio prega V.S. Ill.ma di dargli il vero suo sentimento [...]". Parenti closes the letter with the acerbic remark: "Quanto mai ognuno si compiace delle cose sue - sino la scimmia con i suoi bruttissimi scimmiotti!" ("In any case, everyone is pleased with his own things, even the monkey with his ugly monkeys!"). - The letter is captioned in a contemporary hand, possibly that of Vallisneri, "Stravaganze del male della Principessa" ("Extravagances of the Princess's illness"). - Traces of folds. With a tear to the address leaf from breaking the seal.

An einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten: "Wenn Sie das Exemplar das ich Ihnen durch meinen Verleger zuzustellen die Ehre habe, als ein Zeichen meiner Hochachtung [...] aufnehmen wollen; so wird dieses zu meinem grössten Vergnügen gereichen [...]". - Johann Pasquich war seit 1788 Prof. der Mathematik an der Universität Pest und veröffentlichte 1786/87 seine astronomischen Forschungen in der Sammlung von Bernouilli in Leipzig. "Er lehrte 1792-97 Mechanik am Institutum Geometricum in Pest, ging dann aus Gesundheitsgründen nach Wien und arbeitete an der dortigen und an der Gothaer Sternwarte. 1802 kam Pasquich nach Pest zurück und wurde 1803 2. Astronom an der Ofner Sternwarte, 1807 deren Leiter und zugleich Prof. der Astronomie an der Univ. Pest. Mit Unterstützung des Palatins Erzh. Joseph wurde nach dem Projekt von Pasquich eine neue, mustergültige Sternwarte in Ofen (1815 vollendet) erbaut. P. bekleidete bis 1824 die Dir.-Stelle und zog sich dann als Pensionist nach Wien zurück. Er vermachte der Univ. Pest eine reiche wiss. Stiftung" (ÖBL VII, 335).

Ouvrage "indispensable pour l'histoire intérieure de l'Empire" selon Tulard, car en tant que conseiller d'Etat puis préfet de police, le Chancelier Pasquier (1767-1862) bénéficiait d'un poste d'observation sans équivalent. "Taine ne jugeait-il pas Pasquier le "témoin le mieux informé et le plus judicieux pour la première moitié de ce siècle". Son témoignage est en effet de tout premier ordre pour le fonctionnement du Conseil d'Etat, le Grand Sanhédrin, la police impériale (critique de son prédécesseur et ses employés (Boucheseiche, etc.), affaire Malet, approvisionnement de Paris, conflit avec l'inspecteur général Veyrat), les événements de 1814 et de 1815" (Tulard, 589). "La Restauration y occupe une place capitale [... ] Y défilent tous les personnages importants de l'époque, jugés avec une connaissance des événements et de leur arrière-plan, car Pasquier exceptionnellement "savait en général tout ce qui se peut savoir" écrit de Broglie dans ses souvenirs" (Bertier, 786). Les tomes 4 à 6 sont en édition originale (les tomes 1 à 3 en quatrième ou troisième édition). De la bibliothèque de Stephen Liégeard, avocat, député et écrivain français, connu pour avoir inventé le terme " Côte d'Azur ". Der damalige Bischof, Kardinal Mastai-Ferretti - der spätere Papst Pius IX -, war mit ihm befreundet. 1847 wurde Pasquolini Mitglied der Staats-Consulta, 1848 Handelsminister, 1861 Präfekt von Mailand, 1862 Außenminister und 1876 Präsident des Senates. - Alexandrine von Dietrichstein-Proskau-Leslie (1824-1906), die Tochter von Franz Joseph Fürst von Dietrichstein (Nikolsburger Linie), war mit Alexander Graf von Mensdorff-Pouilly (1813-71) verheiratet, der nach dem Tod ihres Vaters durch kaiserliches Diplom den Titel eines Fürsten von Dietrichstein erhielt. - Bl. mit kleinem Ausriß durch Siegelbruch; etwas gebräunt und mit kleinen Randläsuren.

Wahrscheinlich an den ehemaligen königlichen Bibliothekar in Berlin Alvar Augustin de Liaño (1782-1848) als Antwort auf einen Brief, den Liaño ursprünglich an Dorothea Schlegel gerichtet hatte. Passy erklärt, dass Schlegel den Brief an ihn weitergeleitet habe und dass er aufgrund mangelnder Spanischkenntnisse in lateinischer Sprache antworten müsse: "Ad literas Tuas, sub 15 Aprilis h. a. ad viduam de Schlegel directas, et per Eamdem ad me transmissas, hispanica lingua respondere, mihi ex defectu debiti usus adpropriare nequeo, quapropter ad communem nostram, omnibus in oris catholicis usitatam latinam me verto [...]". In seinem ursprünglichen Schreiben hatte Liaño um Bücherkataloge aus Wien gebeten. Dieser Bitte ist Passy offenbar nachgekommen; er kündigt einen Katalog mit katholischen Publikationen an, die in Wien bis 1836 erschienen sind und der auch Werke Passys umfasse: "Quantum ad petitum ad Dominam de Schlegel directum: 'que procure algunos buenos catalogos de Vienna de libros de theologia, derecho-canonico, historia ecclesiastica y devocion' satisfacio lubens, dum adjungo his meis literis recentissimum catalogum librorum omnium catholicorum qui usque ad annum 1836 conspexere lucem, in quo etiam mea reperiet (pagina 219 & 220) [...]". - Anton Passy wurde im Theologiestudium durch Klemens Maria Hofbauer beeinflusst und trat dem Redemptoristenorden bei. 1821 wurde er zum Priester geweiht und entwickelte sich bald zu einem der beliebtesten Prediger seiner Zeit. Über Hofbauer hatte Passy Zugang zu den in Wien verkehrenden Romantikern, besonders Clemens Brentano und Friedrich Schlegel. Er begann in der von seinem Bruder Georg Passy geleiteten Zeitschrift "Ölzweige" erfolgreich romantische Texte zu publizieren und entwickelte sich zu einem bedeutenden Vertreter der katholischen Romantik. Daneben verfasste Passy Andachts-, Gebetbücher und eine Kirchengeschichte. - Dorothea von Schlegel hatte von 1808 bis 1816 mit ihrem Mann in Wien gelebt. 1816-18 verbrachte das berühmte Ehepaar zwei Jahre in Frankfurt, bevor sie nach Rom übersiedelten, wo Dorothea von Schlegel bis zum Tod ihres Mannes 1829 lebte. Danach zog sie zu ihrem Sohn, dem Maler und Direktor des Städelschen Kunstinstituts Philipp Veit, nach Frankfurt, wo sie 1839 starb. - Auf Bath-Briefpapier mit Empfängernotiz in Tinte. Minimale Spuren alter Registratur. Am oberen Blattrand angestaubt und mit kl. Tintenwischern; minimal braunfleckig.

Arabella Spiegel vor, eine sehr talentvolle junge Dame mit großer schöner Stimme, und bitte ich Sie verehrter Freund dem Fräulein mit Rath und That in ihrer Angelegenheit an die Hand zu gehen [...]". - Die Tochter des Künstlerehepaares Franziska und Julius Cornet erhielt ihre Gesangsausbildung in Hamburg und erregte bei einem Konzert der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien die Aufmerksamkeit von Erzherzogin Sophie, was eine Reihe von Hofkonzerten zur Folge hatte. 1865 wurde sie an das Theater am Kärntnertor in Wien verpflichtet, debütierte hier als Königin der Nacht in der "Zauberflöte" und brillierte u. a. in den Partien der Isabella in "Robert le diable" und der Rosina im "Barbier von Sevilla". "Trotz großer Erfolge wandte sich sie wieder dem Konzert- und Oratoriengesang [zu] und gründete in Wien eine eigene Gesangschule, die sie bis 1881 leitete" (DBE). The eminent chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur writes to an unidentified recipient, addressed simply as "Monsieur", requesting some changes in an unspecified manuscript (evidently of a partially biographical nature). "Monsieur, Je vous serais obligé d'accepter toutes ces corrections qui ne changent rien à la force de vos arguments, mais qui en diminuent le ton un peu irrité. Surtout ne dites pas: 'puisque M. Pasteur n'a jamais voulu prendre un brevet'. C'est une erreur. J'en avais pris un et même je m'étais occupé de la btion [?] en vue d'y trouver un gagne-pain pour ma famille, après la guerre, pendant la commune, à un moment où l'effondrement de notre chère France paraissait irrémédiable". - With a two word insertion, and several words at the conclusion inked through. - Very faint creasing at corners, tiny pinhole touching descender of one letter, otherwise very good.

A curious manuscript in the hand of Pasteur with fascinating content as the French chemist begins preparations for a lecture: "Do you know what to us is the charm of your studies? Do you know, if you will allow me to speak thus, what is the enchantment of science? It is that we can provide the proof of our principles. Who can give that, this proof of principles, in politics, religion, even in morals? Who can put into the precision of formulas human passions and their sometimes terrible effects, for example the assassination of a Garfield by a dreadful madman […]". - No doubt Pasteur wrote the present draft in the autumn of 1881 after President James A. Garfield was shot by assassin Charles J. Guiteau, a rejected and disillusioned Federal office seeker on 2 July 1881. Garfield died on 19 September 1881.

In French: notes on the work of Monsieur Rets entitled 'Present state of studies of silkworms in the Vivrais': "This is what I notice in this note: The few Italian species which, up to now, had resisted the illness and last year had given good results, have now contracted it. They had been left from the early stages by the breeders […] Designation of the species give the best guarantees […] nonetheless there is no sign of any other disease than that of the little ones […] The worms submitted to sulfur and carbon treatment are well up to the present. The worms are vigorous, healthier, steadier […]". - The present manuscript was written well before Pasteur concentrated his efforts in battling a catastrophic disease of silkworms which was then ruining the production of silk in the south of France during the five-year period from 1865 to 1869. In 1853, silkworm eggs could no longer be produced in France, but had to be imported from Lombardy. The disease then spread to Italy, Spain and Austria. Dealers procuring eggs (i.e., seeds) for the silkworm breeders had to go farther and farther east in an attempt to secure healthy products. The disease followed them, soon engulfing Greece, Turkey, the Caucasus, China and even Japan. By 1865, the silkworm industry in France was near ruin. Though Pasteur had never ever seen a silkworm or a mulberry tree, he began at the request of his master Jean Baptiste Dumas, the famous chemist to investigate the cause of the epidemic. To be of value in his scientific endeavor, Pasteur had to become a masterful industrialist and therefore, it is quite expected that he would criticize those who would be willing to let their own economic failures be dismissed blaming disease rather than their own ineptitude or mismanagement.

4to. 1½ pp. on 1 bifolium and 1 single leaf. Notes on silkworm disease. Pasteur compiled the present notes in the Swiss Alps in 1857 with the help of observations made by a silkworm breeder. They contain comparative information on the disease afflicting silkworms and diseases of vineyards and mulberry trees: "Note sur les éducations de vers à soie destinée à la confection de la graine, faite en 1857 dans la Suisse, les montagnes des Basses-Alpes et d'autres localités où l'épidémie n'a pas paru; par M. Guérin [illegible]. […]". Undoubtedly, Pasteur relied on these notes and other accounts when he travelled to the south of France in 1865 to investigate the diseases among silkworms wreaking havoc in the French silk industry, as he had no prior knowledge of the silkworm disease he was comissioned to investigate. Within three years he succeeded in isolating the bacilli of two distinct diseases and in finding a procedure to prevent contagion as well as in detecting diseased stock. - Slight marginal soiling, otherwise in mint condition.

Lengthy autograph endorsement and a note signed ("L. P.") on a letter from Dr. G. Rauch. Lisbon, 8. IX. 1888.
Small folio (267 x 210 mm). 3 pp. In the present letter, Dr. Rauch requests permission to visit Pasteur's laboratories to examine the discoveries made by one M. Gamaleia in hopes of making a contribution to his work and that of Pasteur. Rauch explains he has had extensive experience with diseases in warm countries, citing two cholera epidemics in Toulon and Algeria, and proceeds to list his medical qualifications. He notes he would particularly like to participate in M. Gamaleia's experiments in the endemic field and feels confident that the Minister of the Navy will release him to do so, if accepted. At the foot of the third page of the letter, Pasteur replies in full from Arbois on 12 September 1888: "Honoured Sir and Doctor, As soon as Monsieur Gamaleia has returned to Paris I will hasten to communicate your interesting letter to him. The latter is dated from Lisbon; are you returning on the Brest route, and when? Would you be able to come and see me on your way to Paris where I would perhaps have already returned? We could talk without too much inconvenience to you, about your wishes. Yours truly, L. P." (transl.). A further note in Pasteur's hand is found at the head of the first page of the letter: "To be shown to M. Gamaleia as soon as he arrives. L. P. 12 September 1888". - A fine letter demonstrating Pasteur s great willingness for collaboration between doctors and scientists.

On stationery imprinted with his monogram, to an unidentified doctor: "I would be much obliged to you if you could have the letter enclosed herewith given to Representative Wiedersperg, in relation to the motion he just presented to the Austrian Parliament and that was so successful, as it should have been. I also know that it was put together with you in mind. I have just received from Dr. von Frisch the pamphlet containing the sum of his experiments with rabies, a document I have been anxiously awaiting in order to respond to the 16 proposals that appeared in The Medical Week of December 30. What a disappointment! Frisch's pamphlet is so faulty that I will not engage in criticizing it. His experiments and arguments are not worthy of any attention. I will only talk about it if authorized people think it important, no doubt out of ignorance of the issue. That doctor surely deceived me! Since his coming by my laboratory, I had been inclined to consider him an impartial scientist, well versed in experimental practices. I feel disillusioned and, to be brief, I will only give you one justification: he finds Benzi and Amozzo's experiments and their consequences to be good, only too happy to note that they coincide with his own. And when I contradict him with my own positive results and call his negative, he denies me the right to judge his work, and claims that his results are positive. No discussion is possible with a man whose reasoning lacks scientific logic". - Pasteur's own rabies experiments had indeed been successful. In April 1882, he undertook research that proved to be the most spectacular of all-the preventive treatment of rabies. After experimenting with inoculations of saliva from infected animals, he came to the conclusion that the virus was also present in the nerve centers, and he demonstrated that a portion of the medulla oblongata of a rabid dog, when injected into the body of a healthy animal, produced symptoms of rabies. By further work on the dried tissues of infected animals and the effect of time and temperature on these tissues, he was able to obtain a weakened form of the virus that could be used for inoculation. Having detected the rabies virus by its effects on the nervous system and attenuated its virulence, he applied his procedure to man; on 6 July 1885, he saved the life of a nine-year-old boy, Joseph Meister, who had been bitten by a rabid dog. The experiment was an outstanding success, opening the road to protection from a terrible disease.
