Wife of the influential German philosopher/scientist whose pioneering research on embryology resulted in his philosophy of entelechy -- the science and philosophy of the organism. PS 4" X 6" n.p. n.y. Very good. Sepia tone head-and-shoulders formal portrait of an older Mrs. Driesch set within an oval. She signs large and bold "Margarete Driesch" in black ink on a darkish area below her portrait making for contrast that is decent but not outstanding. Unusual. Also present is her printed calling card "Frau Margarete Driesch / Geb. Reifferscheidt" heavy stock 4¼" X 1 3/4". Near fine. On the bottom margin she pens her address "Leipzig" and "Zollnerstr. 1" and on the verso she pens the address of the recipient of this photograph "To Prof. T.H. Morgan / 117. Street No. 409 / New York City" in brown ink. Thomas Hunt Morgan 1866-1945 was an influential American embryologist geneticist and biologist who won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1933; in 1905 he and Driesch corresponded about embryology issues which is likely around the time this photograph was sent. The second wife married 1951 of the microbiologist who won the Nobel Prize in 1954 for cultivating polio viruses in tissue culture was according to one biographer "a constant source of support participating socially and scientifically in the subsequent events of her husband's life." Printed color Christmas card heavy stock 7¼" X 5" closed n.p. n.y. Near fine. Printed front cover depicts a watercolor New England fishing village scene while inside panel bears a printed "Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year" and "Doctor and Mrs. John F. Enders" printed in red. On the blank panel above this she boldly pens "Warm greetings to you both / Carol and John Enders" in blue in. Although not noted the recipient of this Christmas card was Basil O'Connor 1892-1972 FDR's well-known law partner. Interesting connection: The March of Dimes was founded by polio victim Franklin D. Roosevelt and O'Connor and raised many millions to battle polio and vaccines such as Jonas Salk's -- hence it's appropriate there would have been cordial relations between the polio researcherEnders and polio crusader O'Connor. This flag and crew patch were flown aboard the Space Shuttle "Columbia" STS-1 / April 12-14 1981 / Presented to / Adlai Stevenson / In recognition of the significant contributions you made to the success of this mission
Original space-flown flag 5½" X 4¼" and cloth patch 4¼" X 4 3/4" presented on a 12 3/4" X 16 3/4" cream colored heavy stock in turn mounted to a 16" X 20" pale blue mat board. Very good. Bit of slight soiling. The cream colored stock bears glossy photographs on the upper left takeoff and lower right landing corners. At lower left is a circular flute-edged NASA gold foil seal and the space-flown flag is mounted at upper right -- consisting of the State Seal of Illinois with the word "ILLINOIS" below against a white background. The printed text cited above appears immediately below this flag and the crew patch below this text. JOHN YOUNG 1930-2018 signs boldly in black ink to the left of the patch while ROBERT L. CRIPPEN born 1937 signs to the right. The Columbia STS-1 flight was called by NASA "The boldest test flight in history." It was the first orbital flight of the Space Shuttle program lasting 54½ hours and orbiting the Earth 37 times; commanded by John Young and piloted by Robert Crippen it was the first to use solid-fuel rockets in a U.S. manned launch. These rare relics were presented to Illinois' then-senator ADLAI E. STEVENSON III 1930-2021 who was instrumental in guiding U.S. space policy. unknown

An einen nicht namentlich genannten Theaterdirektor in Bezug auf eine mögliche Aufführung der Tragödie "Phädra" (1877): "Unwohlsein hat mich leider verhindert Euer Hochwohlgeboren bis jetzt meinen aufrichtigen Dank auszusprechen. Es macht mich sehr glücklich, dass sich meiner Phaidra so erfreuliche Aussichten eröffnen. Alles was mir Herr von Waldberg über Ihre Bühnen mitgetheilt hat konnte meine Freude nur erhöhen. Es handelte sich nun nur noch darum die Einwilligung Lauberts zu erhalten, denn ohne Musik ist die Aufführung der Phädra unmöglich. Die Bacchantenscene wäre ohne Musik undenkbar [...]". - Neben einer weitgehend zeremoniellen militärischen Laufbahn studierte der musisch begabte Prinz in Bonn und verkehrte in literarischen Kreisen. In den 1870er und 1880er Jahren veröffentlichte er unter den Pseudonymen Georg Conrad und Günther von Freiberg zahlreiche Dichtungen und Theaterstücke. Daneben protegierte er kulturelle Einrichtungen und legte eine umfassende Bibliothek an, die er der Universität Bonn vermachte. - Leicht gebräunt. Verso mit Vermerk von anderer Hand "Vom ollen Dichter-Prinzen Georg von Preussen". Aus der Autographensammlung von Eduard Fischer von Röslerstamm mit dessen eh. beschriebenem Archivzettel.

(GALENA, Illinois) McDANIEL, Mary (?-?)
Autograph Letter Signed
Early resident of this important Illinois lead-mining town which for a time produced a high percentage of the world's lead "Galena" is Latin for lead and was supposed to become the great hub of the Midwest before Chicago's natural geographic advantage supplanted it; today's Galena is remembered as the adopted hometown of Ulysses S. Grant. ALS 2pp single leaf 5" X 8" Galena IL 1857 January 1. Addressed to Miss Marcia Floyd of Courville Maine. Writing on pale pink lined stationery McDaniel pens her friend this chatty missive. She describes Illinois: "Well it is a large and fertile state abounding in vast prairies the principle production is wheat maize etc. There are numerous salt springs." Of Galena she notes: "The inhabitants in the vicinity are chiefly farmers and are intelligent and enterprising. Most of them live in log houses. I am attending school at present and like it here very much." Oddly she signs off "Peter Fling / Mary McDaniel." The significance of this pseudonym we have not been able to ascertain -- perhaps "Peter Fling" was a character in popular young women's literature of the day. Even more odd is the original envelope which is present. A typical small 4 3/4" X 2½" in addition to addressing it McDaniel draws a three-cent stamp in the upper right corner and draws a circular "Galena Ill Jan. 1" postal cancellation in the upper left corner! The 1850s was the early days of actual government-issue postage stamps of course but this humorous version surely was contained within another larger second envelope. No "McDaniels" appear in the Galena city directories of this period though with a large and somewhat transient population in a rural area this isn't terribly meaningful. This superb and evocative letter has been handsomely framed the letter in one mat opening and the envelope in another above it double matted in tan and dark brown and framed in a 1¼" burlwood frame overall dimensions 10¼" X 18". It's double sided as well so may be flipped over to read the letter's second page where an attractive typescript of the entire letter is also displayed in a mat opening. Very early and very unusual. unknown

Le journaliste à Carlier : Dans un entracte de l'interminable procès Kravchenko, il retrouve une lettre de Billy qui l'informait du procès Club contre héritiers-Hugo, vous verrez qu'il était tout disposé à vous aider… Billy au journaliste : "L'histoire Hugo m'intéresse d'autant plus que c'est à la suite d'un article de moi dans Le Figaro qu'un décret a été pris par Vichy pour prolonger la propriété des héritiers Hugo… Et il se propose de faire un article. Grenoble, 22 janvier 1947, 6 pages recto verso in-4 et 7 gravures signées, enveloppe cartonnée conservée avec l'adresse d'André Breton, 42, rue Fontaine. Varbanesco propose à André Breton de collaborer à un numéro spécial de la revue Variété, il lui demande un texte-pivot traitant de la coïncidence. Il l'assure de la collaboration du Dr Mabille (Pierre). Les deux tiers de la revue seront consacrés à la question de la coïncidence et un tiers présentera les gravures " sur caillou " et des documents du jardinier Guillermin qui vivait à St Oudras dans l'Isère. Également des traductions de l'œuvre d'Urmuz l'écrivain roumain dont “vous avez entendu parler et qui fut précurseur”. Varbanesco revient sur l'idée de Breton d'une enquête sur la coïncidence dont les réponses les plus significatives auraient été publiées. La réunion de ces textes serait l'étape préliminaire pour une prochaine anthologie. Enfin la question de la division du contenu du numéro se pose : soit selon les auteurs, soit par spécialités dans les domaines scientifiques, poétiques, etc. Varbanesco demande l'opinion de Breton sur toutes ces questions. En post scriptum : “je me fais le plaisir de vous envoyer quelques planches extraites d'un travail actuellement en cours pour les Chants de Maldoror que je prépare pour les éditions Bordas”. Joint : 7 estampes signées et toutes annotées au crayon par Varbanesco : 1 planche Les chasseurs d'ours de St Ondras par eux-mêmes copie d'après une gravure sur " caillou " du jardinier Guillermin, 6 épreuves d'artiste inédites pour les Chants de Maldoror : Ier chant le fond de l'océan (eau-forte sur zinc), Chant Ier …gonflent leur cou terrible (5ème, 8ème et planche définitive), Chant IIIe, au bordel (planche définitive et 20ème planche). Varbanesco donné des illustrations pour le n°9 des Cahiers G.L.M. ainsi que pour le n°5 de la revue Le Temps de la poésie. On joint: Dépliant de l'exposition VARBANESCO à la Galerie Mai à Paris, du 14 au 30 mai 1946, 1 feuille A4. Texte de Louis Parrot au verso “Varbanesco ou Histoires naturelles” et une transcription complète de la lettre. Les archives Varbanesco sont déposées au musée de Valence.

Very Good. Dated Novemberr 23 1944 on Peace News letterhead Murry writes: Dear Miss Cope I am sorry but in these days it is a physical impossibility for me to make a journey to Cambridge without an inordinate expenditure of time. In more spacious days with plenty of petrol it was comparatively easy for me to pick up a train at Thetford which is 10 miles away. I can't do it now. That makes it an immensely round-about journey for which at the moment I have neither the time nor energy. Yours sincerely J. Middleton Murray. . Very good some light wrinkling and creasing. Both this letter and T. S. Eliot's which we have cataloged recently both employ not just the 'Oxford two spaces' after periods but seem to add a third space. We suggest this to be the subject of someone's dissertation: 'The Development of the "Oxford Three-Space" Among English Literary Personages of the 1930s and 1940s.'. unknown

This pioneering American physician considered the father of neurology was also a psychiatrist and bestselling writer and poet. Secretarial ALS 2pp lettersheet 5" X 8" Philadelphia PA 1898 August 11. Addressed to Edward Peterson. Near fine. On his "S. Weir Mitchell M.D." letterhead Mitchell's secretary pens a letter on his behalf. In part: "Dr Mitchell has forwarded me some letters for reply as he is always out of the City at this time of the year. He strongly advises you to choose the University of Pennsylvania from which to get your degree. He is one of the Trustees of that institution. During the Civil War he was on duty at the Christian St Hospital." Appears to be signed "MBC. / sec'y." With original envelope. An interesting curiosity. unknown

Ce manuscrit n’est pas de la main de Gabriel Bounoure mais certainement de sa femme. “Tibre et Oronte” de Montherlant paru dans la Nouvelle Revue Française du 1er octobre 1923 et en volume en 1924 (1er chapitre du Paradis à l’ombre des épées).
