Ship Phoebe" Barlow remarks: "Mr Sewell the Kings Advocate General of Lower Canada informs me by letter of the 14th Augt. last -- that he has transmitted to you as set of Bills payable to me or order. I request you will send them to me under cover. my reason for not having them sent to Portsmouth is that we are only waiting a fair wind to sail for Ireland." Handsomely penned. A scant three months later 2 February 1801 at the Straits of Gibraltar Barlow would for the second time in his career capture a French frigate -- for which victory he was knighted and given command of the HMS Triumph in the Mediterranean. Brief ALS 1p 8�" X 13" Harrisburg PA 1817 August 1. Addressed to George Bryan auditor general. Good plus. Rather edgeworn with several edge chips; some archival repairs along right edge. Intriguingly cryptic legal matter written while state attorney general reading: "In the case submitted in your letter of yesterday my first impressions were the same as yours. But upon the reflection & examination of the law I adapt the of Judge Burnside. I could add another reason to those mentioned by the Judge -- one drawn from the word & spirit of the law -- but unless it be desired by the accounting officers I will not enter into a discussion at large of the question." Thomas Burnside 1782-1851 was a Pennsylvania representative and state supreme court associate justice; at the time of this letter he served as president judge of the Luzerne district courts. By way of illustration accompanied by a superb 3�" X 5�" picture postcard showing Devine and Guy Madison in buckskin outfits guns drawn in their roles as "Wild Bill Hickok and Jingles" their popular Western series from 1951-58 with facsimile signatures of each below their images. McCormick -- this career diplomat joined the State Department in 1887 serving as U.S. ambassador to Austria-Hungary 1902 Russia 1902-05 and France 1905-07 although according to one journalist McCormick's "career as a dilettante diplomat took a backseat to his more serious pursuit of alcohol." Autograph Fragment unsigned on printed calling card heavy stock 3" X 1�" London England n.y. Near fine. Handsome italic "Mr. Robert McCormick" printed at center and beneath this McCormick has penned in brown ink in his small neat hand "Hotel Belgravia / Victoria Street S.W." Likely dates from early in his State Department career else a title such as "Ambassador" would have preceded his name. The card bears a heavy printed black border or "mourning rule" but since it's difficult to assign a date to this it's also difficult to determine what death in his family would have occasioned the mourning border. The Victoria Street area of southwest London is appropriate as it was chock full of foreign embassies and McCormick must have been on some State Department assignment there. Not signed alas but a most unusual item nevertheless. unknown

Very good. Mild edgewear; small staple holes from removal of matches. Glazed white card stock. This unusual matchbook was produced in a small quantity strictly for Bradley's personal use and distribution in later years. This attractive example was acquired directly from Ralph G. Newman founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. Newman was a friend of Bradley's and served as his literary agent later in life when the second edition of Bradley's 1951 memoir "A Soldier's Story" was reissued in 1978. Most unusual. Though not dated it's a "front striker" which dates it prior to 1973 -- post-1973 a federal mandate placed the striker on the rear cover for safety's sake. Matchbook spine "saddle" to matchbook collectors and back cover are blank. unknown
